  • A discussion about how astrology can speak to the topic of death, as well as how astrologers cope with grief and loss, with astrologers Madeline DeCotes and Chris Brennan.
We open by talking about some of the different ways that astrology can speak to the topic of death, both by looking at a person's birth chart and the charts of people who are close to them.
Eventually the conversation delves into the complexities of interpreting astrological indicators of death, as well as the need for caution, sensitivity, and ethics when discussing such topics.
The episode is meant to provide a broad exploration of the topic of astrology and death, highlighting the ways in which astrology can offer insights into the experience of mortality and the grieving process, and this lays a foundation for doing more detailed treatments of specific subtopics in future episodes.

During my first Saturn return, around 1979, I lost my mother and father to cancer - 3 1/2 weeks apart - and my husband and I got a divorce. The most challenging year of my life. I literally felt like I was suffocating. My personal life got out of control for a time. One very early morning as I was playing poker in Reno, drinking Jim Beam and chain smoking, truth, a man sitting across from me with a cowboy hat on, said to me: "What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?" It was a wake up call from the universe. I finished my hand, headed back to the airport and flew home to San Jose. After that I went cold turkey - gave up drinking and smoking, finalized my divorce, gave my ex the house, and with 2 suitcases with all my belongings, I got on a Pan American plane to SE Asia. By the end of the summer I ended up visiting and subsequently living at a Buddhist community in Northern California.

Chris and Madeline, thank you for this. I get annoyed at astrologers who think this subject is too sensitive or taboo to even approach it. We have to be able to discuss it.
To our fore-bearers, death was always close and was just a part of life. People were much more comfortable with death because they didn't have the luxury of hiding it away from themselves. A hundred years ago or more, If grandma died, you laid her out on the table for a "wake". You would have a lot of children because the chances of them all making it to adulthood were slim to none. You would dig the grave, or build the pyre, or prepare the body. This was all very normal and expected. Death is very much a part of the human experience and we need to be able to embrace it and talk about it!

Thankyou for your comment. Absolutely death should be talked about openly and embraced. By not doing so, it hinders spiritual growth, separates us emotionally from our loved ones. It can be so much better, we could grieve a little lighter if there wasn’t the taboo surrounding the topic.

That was me. I changed my travel plans but would have been on the flight from Boston to LA. I have Jupiter in the 12th house. I also didn’t get a job one summer in college at a Starbucks by my house and sadly the employees were robbed and murdered. I feel like my Jupiter in the 12th is spiritual protection.

I saw my friend's death in his horoscope after learning of his lung cancer in September of last year. His Chiron return in Aries began at the same time, Eris was also conjunct his natal Eris in Aries 8th house while Pluto was lingering in the first few degress of his 6th house at the tail end of Capricorn. I tried to stay positive for him but inside I knew what was happening. Unbeknownst to me at the time, his 8th house Pisces (houses were split) indicated suicide could occur. He suffered horribly, unable to breathe and unwilling to change his diet, and no doubt fearful of what was happening to him. Knowing your once vibrant life is coming to an end must have been difficult for a manifesting generator. I knew once his body couldn't move any longer he would not be able to live. His larger than life silhouette came to me when his life ended. I didn't realize what I was seeing at the time. I saw myself being held against the chest of this giant shadow figure. I went to sleep after that then found out a few days later he had died. His 50th birthday would have been next week. He was my favorite person on the planet. I'm a Taurus Sun, Scorpio Rising, Capricorn Moon.

    My husband was a Capricorn Sun, he passed the very day Saturn ingressed into Capricorn in spring of 2018;
Three days prior to that I was trying to do a personal reading for a client and in retrospect I realized I was predicting his murder! It was extremely difficult for me to even touch my cards for the next three years.

And I think for that reason I would love to see a discussion of the length of life technique, I think you would be able to do it justice with all the sensitivity and consideration it deserves. Hello Madeline and Chris- Back in 1992 right at the start of my Saturn return in Aquarius- my mother was hit my a car and died.
She left behind myself and my 3 younger siblings. I met with my most profoundly insightful astrologer at the time to seek some answers.
She pulled up all 5 charts. My Mom and her 4 children.
What she noticed was that at the time of her accident all 4 of her children were actually having Pluto aspects which could have resulted in death. Yet my Mothers chart did not.
She felt that her intuition had her sacrifice her life for us.
My Mother was a Pisces with Moon in Pisces.
I never questioned this and makes much sense to me.

Plus a Scorpio MC, conjunct Lilith with Neptune in the 10th as well . When I first learned about my chart, I used to be a bit worried of what all that energy could imply, but not anymore. Taurus rules my 4th house of ancestry, which puts my Venus in the 7th. I believe my transition will be peaceful, surrounded by my husband and close family. Along with my deceased parents coming to escort me away.❤

I aproach warning signs as opportunities. Pisces learn to swim, stay out of dangerous waters, avoid intoxicants, use bug repellant out door, use appropriate masks for the task, use electric rather than gas, understand poisons, greater caution with medication and chemicals etc. Develop a spiritual path. Minimize dangers from birth on.

1:02:27 agreed yes, I feel like support around death and the grief process are hardly understood. It could be quite valuable for those who feel isolated in grief. Thank you both for this topic. I would say the topic of death helped me become an astrologer. It helped me unpack the grief in a symbolic language that many understand. That helped me feel less alone, and now I can help others with this having the experience myself. 🙏 ❤

so glad to see you talking about this on your podcast. few astrologers want to discuss death but there are absolutely death indicators in natal charts and transits. i've been able to look at a chart and determine cause of death with pretty close accuracy. the elements involved are sometimes keys of how someone dies: water, earth, fire, air. water signs prevalent among the various indicators i'm about to discuss can indicate dying in or near water, for example. if earth is there, maybe they hit their head on the ground or something. maybe if an air sign is relevant, their airways were blocked. the 8th house isn't the only important house to look at. the 4th house isn't just the home, it's also the grave. you can also look at the 6th and 12th house for physical and mental health issues. sometimes the 1st house can also indicate a physical health issue or damage to the body. uranus and/or mars can indicate sudden deaths or accidents. uranus can also indicate seizures/aneurisms. if mercury is involved, it could be related to a car. pluto transits are major, but can indicate death of a loved one/acquaintance rather than the individual especially if the native is young and healthy. neptune can indicate overdoses/substance abuse related deaths and so can jupiter, but i have found that jupiter more frequently indicates alcohol than drugs. i've noticed the north node in the 8th house in a lot of natal charts for people who die very young. very important to look at which houses/signs the rulers of all the houses i've mentioned are located and any aspects they make. that's the key to determining cause of death, usually. learning health astrology will also help you determine the parts/systems of the body involved in pretty specific detail. you can get pretty accurate when it comes to specific diseases somebody dies of, if they involved the bones or the ovaries or the brain...
pluto transits: to natal venus, can mean death of the lover or a woman in your life. to mercury, a sibling. to uranus, a friend. to sun or saturn, the father or grandfather. to moon, the mother or a woman in your life. to jupiter, a grandparent.
8th house prominence in the natal chart can indicate people who work with death as part of their career. scorpios and 8th house people can also benefit from the death in the form of becoming trustees to estates or inheriting money. the ability to communicate with the dead (psychic mediumship) also visible in the natal chart in the form of major aspect patterns that indicate talent involving pluto and/or neptune/uranus or the 8th house and mercury, especially if the sun and/or moon are part of the aspect pattern.
natal pluto in 7th house can mean a lot of people the native knows die. natal planets in the 8th house can mean the native is very impacted by the loss of a loved one at some point, as can scorpio.

I have thought, as an Rn who works primarily with cancer patients that it would benefit many of us to know when our lives will end. The reason being that we live in a world that is both superficial and violent. There are many more mature and older souls among us
but not enough to make earth a more functional and compassionate place to live. I heard that there is a technique in Vedic astrology that can do this calculation, but I also understand that it is no longer seen as appropriate and not done.

I have a Virgo sun so Saturn was/is opposite, and one of the people I lost had Pisces rising (my brother) and my mother has Pisces on her 5th, so parent losing a child. Pisces is my 12th so I can say that once Saturn moved into my 1st I had definitely gone through a rebirth of sorts, especially regarding my relationship with death and loss. Great episode, thank you for exploring this topic!

My mom passed as Pluto was
square my natal moon in the 10th house.
Also, transit moon in the 4th was opposite my natal moon.
I had asked an astrologer to look at the date of my Mom's passsing to see what was happening in the sky. As she animated the chart through that day, she stopped it 2 minutes past the time of death and said, "there it is"
I had only given her the day, not the time.

@@sn8323 I am sorry for your loss.
My mom passed in 2017 and I miss her every day.
      The moon is maternal, yes?
And the sun can be father?
The Sun entering Sagittarius now, and squaring Saturn has me feeling a bit uneasy. And my own sun is in Sag, too.
Somehow, tho, I find comfort in knowing that it is, or was, in the sky.

The fourth house is critical to the experience of death because this house is the foundation of what we are. This is home not only in terms of a house or family but the home in which the soul resides. This is your body and the foundation of your life here on earth. It is not only the body but the body as your home on earth. Your body is also the summation thus far of your ancestors. The body is simultaneously in need of and affected by the physical home but is also a home that when vacated by the soul equals death of the person's life on earth.

This was a good and nuanced take on death in astrology. Folks should definitely keep in mind the importance of having multiple astrological testimonies from other techniques when pursuing insight from the traditional life-length techniques. Some events that used to be lethal in ancient times can be survivable in this modern era.
It was also good to point out how Jupiter is not necessarily a benefic for those born at night. As a personal example, Jupiter’s ingress into my Pisces Eighth House resulted in the death of an extended family member. Having a Pisces Moon as my Twelfth House ruler in my Eighth House has me dancing with death through life. Like, I even ended up a combat medic in the military like Robert Mitchum who also had a Pisces Moon in his Eighth House.
Also, condolences to you Madeline for your losses and thank you for the courage to share the reality of your astrology. It was synchronous for me as I was friends with someone who was also born on March 28th, 1988 and they also faced similar losses and parental complications as Madeline. It’s not easy stuff from what I experienced with them as they went through their events.

I’m so glad that you guys had this discussion. So far I’m only a little ways in but it’s comforting in a way to have the topic covered. I’ve actually got a stellium in my Capricorn 6th house, and Pluto has been going back and forth over my Saturn/sun/ n node conjunction. On top of that I’ve got a Pisces moon. So far I’m still around, lol, but I have been thinking a lot about Saturn type topics like old age, illness, and death, and experiencing some anxiety and grief over the thought of my aging parents and grandparents, as well as the environment and the planet. I don’t like the thought of all these losses or the inevitability of having to say goodbye. That said, it’s clearly a big part of life, so I’ve just been trying to breath through it and accustom my mind as best I can. I don’t know if this is related to my chart and the long Pluto transit, but I always thought that I would die young (in some sort of accident perhaps) and I find myself kind of surprised to have nearly made it to 33. Admittedly not very old, but not what I expected…

This was such an important episode. Thank you Chris and Madeline. I really enjoyed your flow together, and sobering Saturnian conversing, these types of conversations are missing from the astrology community- but you both are right they have to be handled with responsibility and respect and many do not have that capacity. Loss is something that has been a theme in my life, with 12th and 8th house stelliums in my placidus chart.
I lost my mother this year the moment Saturn crossed into my whole sign fourth house and squared my moon…

I like what Madeline said around 1:16 in about wanting to know to make productive use of effort vs leaning into the surrender- ironically I know both types of cap risings haha- one has Uranus, Neptune, north node, sun, all tightly conjunct his ascendant and he’s oscillated quite a bit but he’s seemingly in full surrender. He also has 12th house sag placements though- like mars, more into spirituality nowadays than the grind of his life. It’s so beautiful to witness, tbh. His beliefs constantly shifting, but especially with the NN on his asc he’s the type to decide to surrender bc things keep happening to him. Love my Cap Rising/dominant friends, I always resonate with them.

In the natal charts of people who passed away I know, there are surprisingly pleasant transits like Jupiter conjunct natal Moon in X without squares or oppositions, or Venus- Mars Trines. But death might be individual as life itself.

34:20 interesting conversation about subsumptipn and the 4th house - dying according to ancestral patterns. My dad died when he was 53 years old from a car accident on the same stretch of highway his father died on when he was in his 50s. Chris and Madeleine - I was touched by your personal stories around death and I'm grateful for your willingness to openly share. I think Saturn ruling both your charts lends strength to endure and shoulder other's grief. I am also Saturn ruled and I would have appreciated knowing at the time that i was going through a personal experience around death (2006-2008) that Saturn transiting the 8th (and natal in 5th) could result in mc. I wouldn’t necessarily have wanted to know way beforehand. But if i had consulted an astrologer or my skills had been better, I could have coped better rather than thinking it was somehow my fault. Thanks for your insights.

This is such a great time for you to discuss this topic because I just put something together in my astrology chart that has to do possible future circumstances. My dad died when I was 15, on July 18 1996. It was sudden and on a day that Saturn was going retrograde between Pisces and Aries. My sun is in Pisces & my moon in Aries. Saturn was retrograde when I was born. Saturn and Jupiter are both in my 4th house with Pluto. This Saturn placement will happen again on July 13, 2025. I think you are so right about using grief as a means to see how it can be beneficial or a gift of sorts, but I've definitely bounced between that, anger & sadness about it through different stages of my life since then. Thanks for this insight!!

What I found the most mind blowing about Matthew Perry is he was in a profection year 7, so Saturn was his time lord and that eclipse that happened a couple hours before his death, occurred a degree or two from his natal Saturn. Also, if I remember correctly his progressed ascendant was conjunct his natal Pluto.
My father passed away in 2017. I just looked up eclipses for that year and two days before he passed there was a lunar eclipse conjunct his natal Saturn. The interesting part is the moon was his time lord, and he died two days after the lunar eclipse🤯

@@oneirologic4462 Interesting, can you send me your date and time and I can look more into that, there maybe some slight differences. My sister has something similar with Saturn as her time lord, progressed ascendant on her Natal Pluto with transiting Saturn in her 8th. She just won’t have the eclipse hitting her Saturn. She was born a year after Matthew, and has the same house system as him. Feel free to send me your info and I can check it out.

The progressed ascendant to Pluto was the real death/transiton indicator here. Progressions seem more accurate when it comes to external events. Planetary transits can often have a more subjective background influence unless the pass over a natal angle.

I have the moon and uranus conjunct in my 8th house by 4 degree orb. When transit Pluto hit exactly between them (2 degrees on either side), my mother passed away.
When transit Pluto hit my neptune in the 9th house, my dad was diagnosed with cancer and when it hit my midheaven, he died.
All of my planets are between the 7th and 11th houses. Pluto is the first planet in my chart and the one in the 7th house. It has been conjoining every planet in my chart my whole life so it has been a good timer for things. Now as it heads into Aquarius, it's going to begin conjoining the last three planets, which are also my inner planets. Mercury at 1 degree, Venus at 6 degrees and Mars (my chart ruler) at 24 degrees. Not gonna lie, a bit nervous!
Edit: I am my mother's second child and my father's first.
