I agree that this isn't exactly something to just listen to for the sake of enjoying music, but I must admit I really like it. It's a bit like some contemporary classical music; interesting and thought provoking, but not exactly relaxing. :)
Matt Garstka said that this was recorded in one continous live take, with just some keyboard backing tracks, as Eldar couldn't possibly play all the parts simultaneously. The same goes for the other two GEM pieces, and it totally blows my mind. Henrik said, in a podcast, that he was so scared and nervous about this that he had nightmares about it in the weeks leading up to the recordings. He's also mentioned (and I'm not sure which of the three pieces he was talking about) that while he felt that he was struggling with the complicated bass line, Eldar played the very same bass line with his left hand, and improvised with his right at the same time, as if it was nothing. That is some intimidating level of skill right there. :O

@@kirehj_sm The stuff about him being nervous is in a podcast with Janek Gwizdala, called The Practice Room. In episode 76 he has an interview with Henrik Linder, and they talk about the GEM thing towards the end of that episode (somewhere around the 42-43 minute mark, on the Spotify version at least). That episode can also be found on Janek Gwizdalas youtube channel, in one of his vlogs, if you want the video with the interview.
I can't quite remember in which one it was he was talking about him struggling while Eldar just seemed to breeze through it though. Might have been a Swedish one, or in his Insta stories, but I really can't remember where it was. Sorry! If I come across it, I'll update here. :)

Wow, -thanks Lotta. Yes, I’ve listened to The Practice room interview, but haven’t heard the other bits you mention… could’ve well been on a Swedish channel, since I’ve been friggin listening to everything else Henrik has ever uttered in English 🤣
And with the contemp music thing: I’ve found that playing it can for the musicians be a super interesting and fun challenge and experience, - but with the audience mainly going ‘meh’ about it :)
Then, I’m no Henrik Linder, Eldar or Matt Garstka 🤣😇
Great comment, Lotta, as always 👍

@@fiddlestix3025 Yeah, I think you're spot on when it comes to contemporary music. Most people who really appreciate it and enjoy listening to it, are people who like to, and do, play it themselves. I know I didn't really appreciate it at all, before I started to play it myself, some 25 years ago. :)

@@fiddlestix3025 Also, Henrik does Q&As in his insta stories from time to time, where he delivers an eclectic mix of silly and funny pictures, digs at Aron, and genuinely interesting stuff about both Dirty Loops and his own take on music and playing. Definitely a musician worth following, if you don't already do that. :)

This is a LOT! But, it's a shining example of what appears to be a random jam, though it's NOT! Too complex? No………it's jazz pure and NOT simple.

OK...I'll be listening to that again. Yes, loved it, but mostly to figure out wtf was going on half the time. My first thought was of elements of prog rock, obviously with bits of modern jazz and...believe it or not...definitely some Phillip Glass in that.
Henrik appears in several 'all-star' jams, but my favourite with Dino Jelusick is a bit long for your tastes! Thanks for this one - I think!

You’re not the only one, Steve, to be befuddled by this complexity, others have said it too. For me this is High Maths, with all the 5/7/9/13/16 going on, -at least that’s what it sounds like to me (someone please tell me the time signature of this, at least for the opening part…!)
Like you, I can’t find a groove, -and I’d like to, it’s so damn fire-, and it’s most likely not supposed to have one. Tho I’m sure for someone people it’s the perfect piece to put on on a Sunday afternoon 😉
Henrik, in an interview, confessed to having had a few nightmares before recording this 😵‍💫
Yes, that level of skill of all three of them is something else….
And just like you, it makes me appreciate how other musicians manage to be complex AND accessible at the same time-.
Loved your honest reaction and analysis of this, Steve, as always 👍

"Picasso in music form".......I find this to be so interesting. I could be totally wrong about everything I am about to say, but here's my take on it. The first thing I thought about was how I have to watch your videos many many times in order to hear what you hear because I am definitely not a. musician. I see the forest, you see the trees. So, I think people like me who see the forest can enjoy it from the helicopter, so to speak, but you are being whisked through the forest on a galloping horse and you are trying to concentrate on each tree because you trying to see what each tree brings to the forest, but you aren't enjoying it because the horse is going too fast. I could have said that better but you get my point. Even Henry had to really really concentrate on this one.....he was so focused and he never plays like that with Dirty Loops....he's always smiling and looking around like he's just goofing off....but not here. I do think it's an internal wiring kind of thing. It would be interesting to hear whether those musicians really like it or just don't mind playing that kind of music every now and then. All that to say, I certainly get your point...but as you would say, there's a place for this in the world too. Just like Picasso or any art form, some people just see the entire piece as one and others will ponder each brush stroke for its value and beauty. Thanks for melting your brain for a bit.....it was enlightening!

This is an excellent shout. If I could hear the whole thing as one unit rather than all the individual parts and notes (as is my curse as a musician) then perhaps I’d appreciate it differently.

    • @cocoonmoon1726
      @cocoonmoon1726 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@SteveOGRock Or it you had a place to focus, I think it would be different for you too. I say that because there are some other reactions I have seen that have had busy music (or at least full soundscapes as you call them) but if there is a driving beat or if you have a captivating performer to focus on, then the music becomes the back drop and you feel more grounded and not so tossed around. But I am so glad you are who you are....it makes these videos so compelling and unique! I love what you bring to the table.

@@SteveOGRock yes, it can be a musician’s curse. As someone else once said: you hear what you’re used to (or in that case, trained to) hear… and I’m forever trying to figure out the How of a musical performance, in other words get stuck with the trees, or listening with that analytical mindset, rather than just enjoying it ‘from afar’ so to say, and letting it wash over me…
