You're right, this is a different drummer from Matt Garstka, their current drummer. This is technically their 2nd drummer (Matt Halpern from Periphery was in the band shortly) and his name is Navene Koperweis, current drummer for tech death metal band Entheos along with his wife as the vocalist. Navene fucking rips and has been ripping for decades now. Super nice guy as well. As far as writing, I believe it was basically all Tosin, the guitarist, writing the parts on this album. I'm fairly certain he programmed some drum parts, and those were built upon. Dude's just on another level from us honestly.
Navene was only in the video and live shows. Then he played on Weightless. This was mostly programmed and arranged by Misha. Tosin was discouraged and basically had a pile of riffs and Misha kind of took charge before it all got scrapped. Navene also has a solo band that’s pretty wild called Fleshwrought. Pretty sure it’s all him besides Jon from Jfac on vox. Check it out!
The guitar player Tosin Abasi, has brought more "new" techniques to the guitar world than an one person I can think of. But he is also standing on the shoulders of so many giants. Check out Frank Gambale, the original king of shredders.
I respect in its entirety what gentlemen at 7:00 mark mentions in regards to rediscovering the capabilities of the sound wave travels of vibrations. The man attempts to define it but cannot be described in physical language words yet. Mad respect for progression, advancement, and evolving, adapting.
You guys need to watch some live footage or drum/guitar playthroughs from these guys. Almost miind blowing to see them play this stuff just as cleanly live.
And a music video for the Vitalism song Pagan Part II th-cam.com/video/Zkm9rfkZI9w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=y2EJ_2YTX03zBW_y Enjoy guys. Do with these what you will! Hope to see a reaction to one of them soon!
Ya know… in this kind of vein, I wonder if you’ve ever heard or reacted to the band Vitalism. They’re from Brazil. SUPER talented. I like Animals As Leaders but much prefer Vitalism because they’ve got more flavor and groove… imo.
I always felt AAL were a bit masturbatory but there are so many sick parts in this song. I feel that there are killer riffs that I would be too tempted to make 6 or so songs out of.

Entheos is a good listen! I remember Navene from Animosity days!
You answered a lot of questions I had. Thanks brother
He also played on Moon Healer, Job for a Cowboy's recent release

Chick Corea Elektric Band…
It's the muay thai of metal.
For people who like to "headbang" with all 8 limbs.

Their latest album is absolute fire. My favorite song is Monomyth
It should be "red miso" but I respect your choice ❤

Tosin Abasi is legit one of the most talented guitarists to ever live.
Misha Mansoor and Tosin made the 1st album.

jawdropping talent,but the songs...errrrrrr!
It's 4/4 then after that you can do what you want,. It's not the drummer they have now
I can respect the complexity of the piece and the talent.
But it's not my cup of tea.
✌️🖖🏼
Sounds sped up
