David, I had similar experience, when I was young. After becoming a christian, I read the verse about , if you delight in God, He will grant you , your hearts desire. I believed it and start asking God to change me, to be more like Him. I prayed in tongues all the time, memorize scripture, used God,s Word to pray over me, quoted scripture , till faith arise and I believed in it. Start witnessing to people, pray for people, visit the sick in hospital and before long, I asked the Lord, did't He said , I will be the head and not the tail, above and not beneath. I asked God , what I need to do for my life , as my family depended on me. God told me to be a used car dealer, He provided the capital and the rest is His Story. I am retired now and God gave me opportunity to travel the world. God is not a man , that He can lie. I hope this will encourage you. Hardship is a learning curve.
