When he heard that Napoleon's remains were coming back to France, Marshall Moncey, one of the last Empire marshalls still alive, and dying from old age and weakness, begged his doctor to stuff him woth enough drugs to honour his Emperor one last time.
When the coffin passed, he was here, in his regalia, saluting the man he had served and still revered. When it was lowered at the Invalides, he was one of the few who got to dip a bay tree branch in Holy Water and spray it over the coffin. When all was said and done, the only thing he said was: "Now the last thing I have to do is go home and die". True to his word, he passed quickly afterwards.
And that was only one of many. All over Paris, hundreds of men had donned their old uniform to salute THE Emperor, the one they would still follow if he rose again.

It reminds me of the story of San Martín and why his tomb is guarded by 7 grenadiers. When he died and his remains were taken to Buenos Aires, all the Grenadiers on Horseback who were still alive put on their uniform and spontaneously went to look for him and stand guard with him all night. In total there were only 7. Incredible the loyalty that men had for their generals at that time

About the song, it was written in 1817
"To the veteran who begged for his bread"
It's sad cause it's about a man who conquered the world but the only thing he got, at the end, is beg for bread or money. It was illegal (and concidered a crime) in France at this time. After the occupation of France (1815-1817), they change the law so the veterans were allowed to beg in the street. The only "gift" or reward they gave to them. (Sorry if it's not clear, english is not my native language)

For those who are wondering, it was "Te Souviens Tu" (1817) that inspired "Ich Bin Soldat" (1870): the former is a nostalgic song about the Napoleonic wars, which is why it was used by the latter to make it a anti war song.
It is quite common to find for each song its "anti-song" on the same tune in response. The special thing about this one is that I love both versions!
Side note about hte context, the 1815-1848 period was a time of misery in France where the country suffered the return of the king, poverty, occupation and indeminities to be paid to the coalised. The veterans had no pensions and the bonapartists and republicans were forbidden to work in public institutions (including the army). Begging was forbidden in France, but given the importance of the phenomenon it was allowed for the veterans.

As Pierre begged for a piece of bread, the aristocrats laughed, A man approached him, not giving him bread but extending his hand: "Jean?" Said Pierre in a happy but calm voice, Jean responded: "Get up Caporal", as Pierre got up, he looked behind Jean, seeing his old comrades, and fading images of officers and fallen comrades, seeing his eyes filling with tears of joy, another man with his old uniform approached Pierre and gave him a French eagle: "We need our old flag bearer back, don't forget Austerlitz, Salamanca and Waterloo my friend", the veterans happily marched and joked around the city, gathering their old comrades where they went, and some say, and the end of the march, at the sound of a company drum and fife, they sang this song together, Pierre always remembered to his dying days.. his last words being "I will see you all in heaven.. Te souviens-tu, disait un capitaine
Au vétéran qui mendiait son pain,
Te souviens-tu qu'autrefois dans la plaine,
Tu détournas un sabre de mon sein ?
Sous les drapeaux d'une mère chérie,
    Tous deux jadis nous avons combattu ;
    Car je n'ai plus de noble souvenir ;
    Bientôt, l'ami, nous pleurerons ensemble,
    En attendant un meilleur avenir.

As an American, I love France for helping us, I love the Empire because I studied Napoleon for 4 years straight and his achievements gave us the modern world, Without him, We would never see Modern France, Germany and Italy would be fragments of an Isolated Idea, if it weren’t for him, America would probably be a Rump state subject to Britain all over again. Napoleon deserves more credit than he deserves, His Successes and Failures created our modern world, I give him credit where credit’s due because he did do some bad stuff, he did take Money out of the Italians pockets after he conquered them, He didn’t Bring back the Catholic Church until 1802. I believe Napoleon is merely an Enigma, he was many things, on one hand he was ambitious Conqueror that was hellbent on bringing Europe to its knees, but he was also defending himself against a Greater Number of European powers, Hellbent on Reducing his power, He was a Champion of Liberty, But he was also Responsible for restricting certain Liberties. He did many Good and Bad things, Napoleon’s Conquests shaped our Outlook on the world. He was a good man, But also a Bad man at the same time. I give him Credit for Shaping our World to what it is, and Many people still use his Laws to this day, all be it, With some Modifications to them. To this I say: Vive le France, Vive Le Napoléon, l’Empereur des Français.

"Only one man was alive back then in Europe; the remaining of the beings was trying to fill its lungs from the air he had breathed. Each year, France gave to this man the gift of 300 000 young men; and him, taking with a smile this new fiber torn from the heart of humanity, he twisted it between his hands, and made it a new string to his bow; then he placed on this bow one of these arrows that travelled trough the world, and went to fall in a little valley of a desert island, under a weeping willow.
Never were there so many sleepless nights as in the time of this man; never was there seen leaning over the ramparts of the cities such a crowd of desolate mothers; never was there such silence around those who spoke of death. And yet never was there so much joy, so much life, so many hearts; never were there suns so pure as those which dried up all that blood. They said that God made them for this man, and they called them his Austerlitz suns. But he did them well himself with his always thundering cannons, which only left clouds after his battles.
It was the air of that spotless sky, where so much glory shone, where so much steel shone, that children breathed then. They knew very well that they were destined for hecatombs; but they believed Murat to be invulnerable, and the Emperor had been seen to pass over a bridge where so many bullets were hissing that it was uncertain whether he might die."
-Musset, The Confession of a child of the century, 1836

You should check on who declared wars. Napoléon conquered Europe because he had to do it for France and yes, he had ambition. Never Napoléon promoted genocide or this kind of stuff like Austrian. He brought the civil code and was the kind of man who was writting a mathematics treatise while crossing the Alps to beat the Austrians who declared war on France (not the other way around) at 27. There is no comparison between this genius and a hyper socialist delusionnal painter who went full auto when the school of art rejected him and when his country lost ww1.
