you struck an important point there guys. The great thing about code Geass is the inversion of traditional roles. Lelouch is not Japanese. He literally gave his full introduction at the end there. Son of a consort, which is not the first wife of a monarch. Although, she is also referred to as an empress at a later point.
Yeah, Marianne was a commoner by birth who became a royal consort. As Charles and Marianne grew closer, sharing the same ideals, Charles had made her empress and his true wife. Eventually, she became the Knight of One prior to Bismark, who idolized and strove to be like her. "Marianne the Flash" was her title as a knightmare frame pilot.
So his alias overall is : The shady red light in French? That seems very appropriate actually, and kinda funny because Marianne attire and name give off the idea of a French lady
It is French, partially, but probably also something they made up on the spot and said: "this sounds Western enough." Louch(e) = shady Lampe = lamp Rouge = red Lelouch Lamperouge = Shady Red Lamp if you are very creative about it. EDIT: I don't know if it implies that he was "shady" to begin with or that he was a "red lamp"/"red lantern" (last in a line) or that is similar to a "red herring" (false/deceptive hint) Some more on the etymology: "Louche" does indeed mean "shady" in French (and thus, means 'not reputable in a rackish way' in English) but here's a little more history on it. It's an early 19th century word that literally means ‘squinting’ or 'cross-eyed'. It became a figurative term for 'shady' or 'devious' (much like 'shady' can be a figurative word in English). But where did the French word come from? It comes from the Latin word 'luscus'....which means 'blind in one eye' or 'having poor sight' So it is a very roundabout reference to Lelouch's magic eyeball or, as a bit of a stretch, to his desire for revenge ('eye for an eye makes the whole world blind', you can argue his actions are short-sighted, etc) "Louche" has a second meaning in French as "a ladle" but that hardly makes any sense in relation to Lelouch. And it is a female noun (la louche) vs. le louche.
I know many people dislike Suzaku (I did too initially) but he def is one of the most complex characters in the show and his relationship with Lelouch is one of the best themes in the show
People kinda hate his character at first because he is portrayed early on as a perfect white knight and it gets annoying for me at least but later on he is a very important character in the show and he grew on me a lot more after the big twist about him and other things
The problem with Suzaku is that the only consistent thing about him is his overall goal: to help the people of Japan. Everything else is in constant flux (his loyalties, his methods, his relationships), changing constantly as his world view keeps getting broken by revelations and crisis points, making him seem like a foolishly stubborn, inconsistent, reactionary hypocrite. For him, each moment and decision makes sense, but from the perspective of the viewer it is like someone repeatedly running into a wall until someone forces them to see the door is in another direction. But his struggles are why his character has the complexity that most of the characters lack. It is like someone took a typical anime protagonist and had them try to solve real world problems without their main character bs powers. Suzaku struggles, trying to help, only for his idealism and sense of righteousness to crumble and be replaced by cold pragmatism. It isn’t supposed to feel good to watch.
