Please join me for this first episode in the series where I'll be reviewing a number of campers and off-road trailers / caravans on the road to my new build. Then, I've had some criticism from some corners that my channel is becoming too "commercial". Let me just say for the record that I was a customer of each of my sponsors first before I signed them up. Also, if you want to see less advertisements on my channel, then please consider becoming a patron; www.patreon.com/getoutgo or buying merchandise getoutgo.co.za/shop/. Regardless, thanks for watching, please like the video if you enjoyed it (or smash it if you didn't) and subscribe to see the rest of this series 🤙
So nice to see that there are still companies that strive to exceed expectations. Very impressive!
Agreed!
For folks who want to do a lot of animal viewing a trailer is still a winner. Setup the trailer and then take off in the tow vehicle to do a safari. What do you think?
The tear down time on these is pretty quick but yes, you have to pack it all up every time you want to drive. A trailer you pack out once and just leave with your vehicle. Trailers can become tedious though if you have lots of one-nighters, add extra complexity and can’t go where this can. There is no perfect overlanding rig, only compromises that meet your specific needs 😉. I will be looking at trailers / caravans in this series as well.
I’m all for the trailer for a few reasons. One is my vehicle stays pretty standard and not a camper van. One nighters are not an issue at all, sometimes I don’t even unhitch the trailer. Even just a RTT was a pain for me if you need to go and buy some wood or supplies. This my opinion of course.
Land cruiser 78 series troopy is the perfect Camper
@@Ooo-nu6ot with the V8 I’d say it’s great, yes. Locally we only get it with the 1HZ (4.2 diesel) motor. I tried to live with one (not even loaded yet) for a year but I just couldn’t, it’s a donkey.
Great review! It’s a great vehicle and camper. We’re you able to try it out in deep soft sand and over rocky terrain? What’s the approximate weight comparison between that and the same vehicle with a canopy and roof top tent? The only issue I have is the practicality, which is every time you want to go on a game drive and having to pack up.
That certainly is a well thought out setup! Can't wait for the rest of the series 😉
Great set up Chris.
I like outdoor campers a lot! Nice new series!
Very impressive 🤙🫣 safe comfortable travels
i would realy love to have something like this one day, beautiful
Love looks great. Could live there for months
Really impressed with the setup
I like it as well!
Looking forward to your reviews of the other options. Happy new year
Thanks Albert, happy new year!
I live in Canada. I want one. Very cool 79 series Landcuriser. Awesome overlanding ride.
Great series you are starting, looking forward to more. This a great setup for a couple. Hope to see more also of family styled rigs.
I will feature family setups as well 👍
Congrats this is great wish you many camping miles. Well done
Thanks but this one isn’t mine 😉 I am considering a 79 for myself but in this series I’ll be looking at all sorts of campers and trailers etc
@@GetOutGO that is great need someone with your experience and no how to do this review. For sure not to be missed. Thank you in advance
Great looking vehicle””
Congratulations on your new Land Cruiser. It’s an excellent choice and I am sure you and your companions will be having many spectacular adventures together with such a capable over lander.
This one isn’t mine 😉A 79 series is high on my list though…
Congrats Chris! Wishing you lots of wonderful adventures with your new companion.
Thanks Michael but this one isn’t mine 😉 I’ll be taking out all sorts of campers and trailers over the coming months. A 79 is high on my list pf choices though…
Looks like a great unit! Nice video.
I enjoyed camping in it 👍 Thanks Henk!
Good review. My one concern is that if you go to a game reserve you have to close up everything before going on a game drive; that's a real Schlep. It would be better to be able to unhitch the camping part and have it resting on some type of strong poles. That's why I've never liked roof top tents.
The wedge roof on this camper is easy to open and close so tearing down doesn’t actually take that long fortunately. I will be looking at off-road trailers and caravans in coming episodes as well though.
its well thought out indeed
That´s a sweet setup. I really like that while you have the interior living space, kitchen, storage and stuff like that is still reachable from the outside. So, as you pointed out, this is still camping outside and not RV style. Appreciate that as life happens outdoors, you know what I mean. Thanks for sharing that video.
Thanks Björn! I really enjoyed camping in this 👍
Pretty nice Rig nice Interior lots of packing space you can do video editing ,fly tying inside
Very very nice
Very smart Chris, side out bed is a winner.
I usually prefer a top pop-up bed as that’s really quick to set up and you leave your bedding in place but this one also works well and It’s obviously easier to get in and out of.
Very nice Chris👌🏻not a bad layout at all🍻
It's lekker, right? Good fun being back in a 79 as well 😉
Excellent review Christoff. South Africans are such innovators in the traveling and camping arena and this kamelback is the perfect example!!!
Thanks Vik!
Very interesting Christoff. I have just had three days at Kruger with my recently acquired 76 Series Landcruiser. I loved it, the experience and the Cruiser. Thanks for the inspiration. 😃
Nice Michael 👌 I still need to see your 76 in the flesh!
I am in S.A until February 12th so let me know if you are around, inspection and fit out suggestions welcomed. That 4.5l V8 turbo is something else and driven sensibly fuel mileage isn't too bad. @@GetOutGO
Hi sir, is your 76 standard, 2/5 gear ratio and exhaust done
Baie geluk. Dis n mooi setup daai.
That's a really cool set up. Thought it was rooftop tent not sleeping in the truck. Kitchen area was very clever. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! 👍Yup, very clever design and great build quality as well
Awesome rig......., something between camping and glamping.
The only negative, once you set up, you can't move.
Thanks for the share 🤙👍
Thanks Paul! Yup, that’s the advantage of a trailer (will look at one in the next episode). The teardown time on this one’s quick fortunately so that also helps 👍
Cool t-shirt…. 😊
Really like the camelback conversion if two people travelling
💯 I’ll be looking at family options in the coming episodes as well
You teased us for too long. Superb episode. Thanks.
Thanks! My own build is still to come though 😈
Horses for courses, ideal for off the beaten track, wild camping in remote areas
Kan sien dit is n uitstaande produk. Baie dankie vir die uitstekende oorsig!!
Dankie Christiaan, ek was heel beïndruk met hom 👍
This is a great camper @Chris, I am liking this build, just a bit concerned about it being a single cab as it limits to two people travel only. But great review and lovely vehicle.
You can get a version pf this for a double-cab as well
Thanks Chris
Thanks
Thanks Anton, much appreciated!
That's a good choice Chris. A 79 series can handle all types of terrain, dirt roads, mud, rivers rocks and mountains.
It looks like there's not much to work on the vehicle or bulid cuz It's already providing you with everything you need to live on the road, including a place to sleep and a way to prepare food.
What you guys do requires a reliable and long-term vehicle for traveling cuz you go through some punishing road conditions, I love the vehicle and the color is awesome. I can't wait to see more episodes
Thanks but this one’s not mine. A 79 is high on my list but I’ll be reviewing all sorts of platforms over the coming months
Hi Chris.. I don’t know if you follow voetspore South America? The one land cruiser that carries the bush lapa bosluis started coming loose on the chassis. The attach brackets that are welded to the chassis were cracked and had to be repaired. It would be a good idea to check with the guys doing the installation to see if the brackets are strong enough prior to fitment. Also, periodically do an inspection of the underside to check for cracks and damage. Something to consider when purchasing one of these campers. It was good to meet you at the caravan show❤
Was nice meeting you as well 👍 I saw that Voetspore episode. As a rule I always check bolts and potential damage after tough sections (camper or not), it’s a good practice in general 👍
Dankie maar dis nie my voertuig nie. Ek gaan n hele paar verskillende campers, veldwaens en karavane op hierdie reeks wys...
Good day Chris. This is a great build I love it it no need of a trailer. How long did it take to build?
This one isn’t mine but it takes around 4 months to build
Thanks a lot for this quick video
Last week we were looking to find more infos about this camper and here you are posting about, we would like you to take us in depth around it talking about the conversion when they remove the load-bed and if the water tank interferes with extra fuel tank ect
And also do you really recommend it ?
Glad it was useful! Whatever I select as my own build will have lots more detail including build and fitment. In the interim I’d suggest having a look at it in the flesh at Outdoor Campers. If you’re a party of 2, want to get off the beaten track and do so in comfort, I can definitely recommend this. If I don’t like something, you won’t see it in this series.
@@GetOutGO Thanks for your answer, yes it is for two people that want to travel and visit southern africa, how quick and easy to set up the bed our worries if its too much work when it is rainy or windy and you have to pack up around dawn...
Thanks again
@@minoloozi the bed is pretty easy (especially if you're 2 people) and the pop-up roof and awning is very easy
Howzit man, great video👍 I couldn't help but notice that the cruiser was running bfg HD terrain tires. Would you mind letting me know how they performed? I'm really considering getting a set.
Thanks 🙏🏻 Not enough time to form any sort of opinion but personally I will never buy BFG again
Thank you for the video, it was very informative. However, my question is that is it possible to have a kamelback camper which is a double cap. Thanks
Hi, Yes you get a slightly smaller version for the Land Cruiser 79 D/C or Hilux D/C
Got a feeling this conversion is what’s happening to your new Cruiser!
Haven’t decided yet but this one is great!
Really interesting new series - are you replacing your Fortuner?
I am, it’s been sold (bittersweet). I will do a build series on my new vehicle once I’ve picked one. In the meantime I’ll be looking at various platforms in this series
N 79 is wel hoog op my lys... Ek is binnekort weer in Bots!
I’ve been researching the Kamelback and am very impressed with this setup. We hope to be building our own unit one day, so I’m also keen to see what you end up with. By the way, how tall are you? I ask because I’m 193cm and was wondering if you can slide the car drivers seat back far enough for comfortable driving in the single cab 79.
I'm 189. I've driven quite a few 76, 78 and 79's and I find the legroom's fine. Lots of headroom for your hat too 😆
We rented the double cab in Botswana two years ago and leg room was fine. We've now booked in Namibia for two weeks in October in a Bushlore CruCam single cab so I'll find out about leg room then! Loving your channel, keep up the great work. @@GetOutGO
If only I could afford it!
It’s priced competitively with other campers but it isn’t a small investment
So well thought out. But what about game drives ? you're kinda stuck once set up.
It’s pretty quick to tear down considering all the luxury but yes, you have to tear down when you want to drive. There is no perfect platform, only compromises that suit your particular needs 😉 I will be featuring a few off-road trailers and caravans in upcoming episodes.
Really nice set up. The gas hob seems to be rather high in position, measured against you when you made coffee. Did the height of it proof a challenge for your wife?
Worked fine for my wife as well 👍
nice , in the U.S. we dont get any thing good to buy and build car campers /overland/ tour rig ,I cant think of any thing like 70 serries wagon /ute / troppy that is. basic utilitarian
I traveled with @ExpiditionOverland last year. Raven is a 2020 Tacoma with an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper. That would probably be my choice in the US. We are fortunate to still have the 70 series available locally though, for sure!
Tacomas did think of it and ranger / jeep gladiator but 5 'box and crew cabs I like a 6' box wish there was a single cab with a 7-8' box @@GetOutGO
How's the sound system?
Depends entirely what you put in. Factory 70 series sounds systems are very basic
Elke keer as jy wil gaan vir n game drive moet jy alles afslaan en dan weer op nee wat sleep maar liewers my karrevaan of trailer.
Dit is so.
Did you NOT hear when he said that this excellent rig set up will GO where your flimsy caravan or soo called off road trailer will NOT go? You obviously don't venture into REAL Africa.
I go to some hectic places in the Karoo >> farm camping and my Summit Everest Trailer on a 2.5 ton Axle eats that up where my mates Invader couldnt >> Nothing wrong with Towing IF you know how to Drive !!!@@MediaCentre-cy1tf
@@MediaCentre-cy1tfhahahaha i will pull my 4x4 trailer where that can go believe me do u venture in real africa 90 percent of overlanders do not .
@@wietsswanepoel5252 I've left many expensive trailer land cruiser rigs in the dust on proper 4X4 tracks. What took me 4 hours on a journey in Zimbabwe took them 12 hours. Same in Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia etc. A group of six 4X4 enthusiasts with all Land Cruisers, with mixed Conquerer, Echo etc trailers asked me to organise a ferry boat on Kariba to next destination..They were so fearful to traverse back to the main road. Trailers are okay for camping but not good for adventurous overland off road travel. Bakkie campers and roof too tents are much better and easier and convenient.
Nice review. What is the fuel economy on that 79?
Thanks! This one’s the 4.5 V8 so you’re looking at 5-7 km/l (11.7 - 16.4 mpg) depending on how and where you drive. The s/c does come with 2 90l (23.7 gal) tanks so range isn’t an issue. You can get them tuned a little better but if it’s fuel economy you’re after, don’t get a V8 😉
Chris where is the campsite?
This was at Matamba Bush Camp bit.ly/3vlD7iL
@GetOutGO Thanx camped there a few times as I reside in Ellisras,Lephalale ,the specific site looks new?
@@heinschonfeldt2249 camped on two sites. First was Oriole (old site) and second was Baily (the new overflow site)
👋🇳🇦
You really have a kak job !!!😂
I was stuck behind a desk (and on planes, airports, taxis and hotels) for 20+ years, fortunately I got a chance to change my stars and I went for it! It also has its moments but I love what I do! 👍
