- Hidden in the hills of the Oquirrh Mountain Range, exist some very old abandoned shafts, portals and left behind remnants, in Jacob City. A ghost town mining camp, that's a historical landmark in Tooele County, Utah - settled in 1865. I found this on google earth a while ago, and have wanted to explore this deserted location for quite some time now.
Tonight, on @offroad801 I'll be highlighting in my TH-cam video this historical route I followed, on the steep old extremely rugged Bald Mountain Road. The road is known for it's challenging conditions, and beautiful scenic views making it a favorite among off-road enthusiasts and those seeking a real backcountry experience. I'll also show you some dangerous and hidden portals, along with some mining shafts, and share a glimpse into this historic 'boom' ghost town. You'll hear some stunning stories as we expose the wild west's past life from yet another big mining boom. Perfect for those adventurous travelers and ghost town history buffs. In this remote outdoor adventure, you'll encounter some old ruins and pieces of history left behind. It'll offer you more than just explore adventure , but also a journey through time - offering you valuable insight to the lost and forgotten history.
These sites are here for our generations to learn more about Utah's unique and diverse past. Hope you enjoyed watching this interesting desert adventure video. And if you did, hopefully you'll consider subscribing to our channel. I work very diligently to provide a video every week for you to enjoy. So if you'd like, leave a comment and give me a 👍. @@wayalife8239 What? Thank you so much 👍.
Such beautiful country wé get to wander around in. We are very fortunate ❤
@chantelsandberg801 Agreed. Like Brigham Young said, this is the place.
I visited Jacob City back in the late 70's. The old hotel was still standing. I drove there in my 1978 Datsun 2WD pickup, so the roads were in a lot better shape then.
@Alanfrom1954 Wow. Wish I could have seen it back then. Not much left now. But still a great adventure.
Skinner is my uncle, such a amazing man. His knowledge of the mines in Ophir and mercur is amazing. The movie “faith of angels”was just released about John and Josh. Nice video, I enjoyed it
@brettberry5329 No way. That's awesome. I can only imagine the knowledge your uncle knew about the mines. Thanks for watching 👀.
Its so cool that Mercur, Ophir, and Jacob City are all so close! Just waiting to be explored 😊
@fossilize_llc Agreed. I wish there was something left of Mercur besides the cemetery. But it's still a very cool place to explore. There are still some places that I want to see.
That climb on that skinny road was really sketchy! So thank you for getting us up there
@@chantelsandberg801 My pleasure. Thanks for watching 👀.
How far is the town from where the road narrows?@@offroad801
Great video, just subscribed.
@@briannave7326 Sweet. Thanks. I hope you enjoy outdoor adventures. Thanks for your support 👍.
My wife and I have been there at least 30 weekends in Jacob City Ofer 5 mile pass and Merker. I have been in the old hotel in the late 1970s such as it was. It has since pretty much burnt down. We used to camp down at the bottom of the canyon by the mind dump, and look through the dump. There is so much there that I don't believe we have seen it all. I wish I was in better health so that I could go back up there and check out a few things, as I've been told it's pretty much burnt down in 23 and 24 the whole canyon. It's quite a place to explore and learn.
@stormmountain2521 Nice. I've only been in those mountains a handful of times. But every time is amazing. There are so many things to see and explore. I can't wait to get back there. Thanks for watching 👀.
This was an awesome video! Thanks for sharing 😊
@@rosalindafaye5668 Thank you so much 👍. Come hang out anytime. Thanks for watching 👀.
One morning on the way to work in Maine on a well traveled paved road.... a bull Moose, the Cow(female) and 2 young-ins were crossing the road. As slow as they could travel, foraging, sniffing, digging, scratching... they mad us all late for work...! =)
Awesome, that is a good way to start the day. I love seeing wildlife. Always enjoyable.
Interesting. I was born and raised nearby in Tooele but left at 18. Never bothered to try to see Jacob City when I was growing up.
@@OldProphet61 Cool. I'm glad you got to visit with us. It's disappearing fast. This is my first time here. Very interesting. Thanks for watching 👀.
The Mojave Underground is a group that explores mines. Done a lot of good work, bringing out souveneirs (Eureka and Ophir museums). Also sent cameras down a few 100 mines looking for a few bodies that may be in them
@@johnsorensen7292 Yes.I went to their website and did some reading. It painted a good picture of the mine workings. I hope someone can find Susan one day so the family can get closure 🙏. Thanks for watching.
'Thar's a Moose in the hoose!' + 2 😁👍
Smelly mines? Maybe an added deterrent for skinny explorers Curtis?
I could say what I think the deal was with the young fella who was found in the mine which had already been searched repeatedly, but I don't want another comment to go Missing for the 411th time this year 😉
Hetty is indebted to Rzr for keeping Herc out of danger 👌😊.
Loads to look at in this location Curt 👍👏
@h.bsfaithfulservant4136 😆 You're so silly 🤣. The more I explore this mountain, the more I wonder how much is really left. There are so many mines everywhere. Don't go missing. Love hearing from you. I knew Hercules was a little too big for this one. We're keeping him safe for Hetty. Thanks for watching 👀.

Haven't been there since 2000, thanks for taking me along, years ago I found an old mine dump up there just covered in really nice turquoise, if you get above Jacob's City on the right road you can look straight down into Ophir, I've saw you explore up there too
@kennethgren8549 Nice. Glad to bring you along. Tons of mine entrances everywhere. I didn't find one with turquoise. But that would be a good reason to go back. I think I found the road you were talking about. There is a fence and gate there now. But I'm pretty sure it looked down over Ophir. Thanks for watching 👀.
Thank you again for the history. Looks like another place I need to visit.
@@ericyoast You're welcome. Great place for adventure if you can make it. Thanks for watching 👀.
That huge, old concrete structure/footings were most likely what’s left of a stamp/processing mill. Where they would crush the ore, and separate out the valuable minerals.
@ethandubya21 Yes, I'm sure you're right. Wish there was a complete mine with equipment. Just to see how everything looks during operation. The U-shaped concrete foundation is at most mine sights. I would guess some sort of tank sat on top of that. Thanks for watching 👀.
@@offroad801My son and I went up there in August of 21. The road was completely destroyed/washed out in many parts. From all that rain we got out there that month. Absolutely no way you would get through on a side by side. We barely could with 4 wheelers. Glad they fixed the road. Jacob City is awesome. Been through every foot of accessible mines up there, except the Hidden Treasure’.😊
@ethandubya21 Well. That's why I waited until now. I'm sure that road gets damaged all the time. That's shelf roads for ya. Sounds like a maze under the mountain. Especially the Hidden Treasure mine. I would love to walk the tunnel to Ophir.
Thanks for the video. lots of places
I have never been to and live so close.
@ratchetman Same. The first time I went to Eureka, it opened my eyes to mining in Utah.I didn't realize how many mines were in this part of Utah. Lots of evidence to see. Thanks for watching.
My heck it's so beautiful there umm by the way I'm glad you aren't crawling in those death traps dont do it ! Those roads look so narrow, the views are spectacular I enjoyed this one guys I'm waiting for the calendar excited for it love you both❤
@traceyfinn1355 Mines are a risk for sure. I try not to go if it looks sketchy. Sounds like these ones are pretty bad. Glad I took the razor. Thanks Tracey 👌.

Great place to camp and dirt bike is the best way to travel through out the whole place been going there for 30 years and only covered half of the place the mine is two hours to walk from front to back not too bad to walk through
@michaelpeterson8148 This is an amazing place for sure. Lots of areas to explore. I know personally that you can make it all the way to Delta on dirt roads. I wish I knew when I was younger. There is so much to find out here. Thanks for watching 👀.
Thanks for the tour. I would love to be a mouse in your pocket on your adventures.

Awesome views!!!😊
@@utahradioman Agreed 👍. Some amazing panoramic views. Every direction.
Had a blast! Great trip and video.
@StacySalmans Nice. Thanks, Stacy 👌.
Highly enjoyable, but weird that you folks never come across any abandoned vehicles, seemingly a mainstay of most abandoned mines, ranches/farms and ghost towns
@thomasspeetzen7658 That's true. I haven't found any abandoned vehicles out there. We found a lot in the Nevada desert. Kind of weird 🤔.
I've been down in the hidden treasure mine, it's definitely one of my most favorite. Spent 3 hours down there and it feels like we barely scratched the surface. Quite a workout climbing back up the main incline from the 1000ft level 😆. Jacob city is what got me into mine exploring, it's such a cool place with an amazing history. I appreciate you sharing the information about the original buildings at the beginning of the video, could I ask where you got the information from? Thanks for the video!
@dstead782 Awesome. That mine is gigantic from what I've heard. I can't believe you went down to the 1000 ft level. 😳Very cool. The info I gathered came from a few different sources. The sign at the bottom of the road. Then I looked up the article in the Deseret news. The website for the Mojave Underground had some good info, too. Maybe a few other places, but I don't remember for sure. I would like to see the tunnel from Jacob City to Ophir. Lots of interesting history in that area. Thanks for watching 👀.
@@offroad801 Hey thanks for the info! That mine is definitely huge . I guess I should stop and read the sign sometime instead of just flying right by it 🤦♂😂. I haven't found the buckhorn connection yet, but from what I've heard you have to rappel down a raise if you want to make it through. But there is indeed lots of very cool mining history around this area, and I appreciate you for documenting it!
@dstead782 No problem. I miss signs all the time, too. Sometimes, you just can't wait and read a sign. If I remember correctly. You do need to do some repelling. But it would be awesome to see the Buckhorn tunnel. 👍
@offroad801 for sure

@mauriceclark4870 I feel very lucky seeing all these amazing places. That's why I film my adventures. To take anyone who might never get the chance to make it. Thanks for watching 👀.
Was that last road you took accessible by 4WD pickup? I’ve over a lot of place in those valley’s but not Bald Mountain. Thank you
@RJJ6129 Yes, as long as you can handle some narrow shelf roads. I didn't go past the summit. So I don't know how the road looks after that.
Such a shame to have to close up all that history because of irresponsible people… Here’s a thought, don’t bring your 10 year old (untrained) child into a 150 year old mine with endless dangers!!
@BrianGraf78 Agreed 👍. I've seen so many places shut down and blocked off. There was an old mine I wanted to revisit. But late last year, they sealed it off. I guess I won't be able to make it now. Thanks for watching.
@@offroad801 Yeah buddy, keep up the good work
@@BrianGraf78 You got it 👍.
Steam heat why not just wood heat?
@jwfinley7808 Not sure, but I think that was the hotel. The pipes seemed too big for just water. But honestly, I don't know for sure.
What would happen if you breached one of those portals
@@gradyyokeley9930 I don't know for sure 🤔. I know someone cut out some of the bars. And if you're small enough to get in. It would be an enter at your own risk kind of thing. I would guess if you need rescuing. You would get stuck with the bill and a trespassing ticket 🎟 🙄. But I don't know for sure. Thanks for watching 👀.
At 21:51 when you were by that door you said it “was stinky down there” what did it smell like? Old water? Mildew?
Probably ammonia from bat guano

All those concrete forms. Are for sleuthing. That there was a big time gold operation in it's day.
@EchoStargazer Yes sir. A very large mining operation. This mountain is Swiss cheese. Thanks for watching. 👍
The moose pic is deceiving. No moose in these little mountains. Head east to cottonwoods
@jammiecunningham2763 Guess you might have missed my captions. That is at our property near Logan. I have to share the wildlife. They make me smile 😃. Thanks for watching 👀.
@offroad801 sorry, I just know no moose loose round Tooele 😉
A couple weeks ago, we were headed off by a Tesla. So not that rough. Lol
@jammiecunningham2763 You are obviously familiar with the area. So I just wanted to let you know where I found those moose 🫎. 👍
@jammiecunningham2763 A tesla at Jacob City 🤔. They must have borrowed it from their mom.🤣
Fun to explore without expecting anything. It is fun to discover without a clue what to expect. I like to do that too, but I am not creating video content. Is that the aim of your videos? They could be more informative. It sounds like you had some historical sources for information on the mine itself. You shared some but nothing to tie to what you showed in the video. Sounds like more research before you go from those sources would be better so there would be less guessing what things are. Even the location of the town. Are there no historic pictures of the town/ mine? At least with more knowledge about mining in general you could make more intelligent guesses on structures you find. It would add a lot more interest. It would keep me coming back. Drop the politics.
@DanCary-fu9vl I enjoy adventure more than anything. Just getting to some of these places is my goal. I'm not a historian. I do like to share some of the history. If I can find it. Online, there isn't much info or pictures. Most of the information I shared was from the sign at the bottom of the mountain. The funny thing is that sign and another one above Ophir said the same thing about the Liberals. Utah is a republican state in general. So, I guess those historians thought it was important to tell that story. So if you enjoy exploring the West, that's what I do. I wish I knew more, but at the same time, the more I learn, the less I believe the narrative. So many things get sugar-coated and blurred depending on who is telling the story. So I would rather say nothing most of the time. Thanks for watching 👀.

@mchebornek Okay, Karen. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Are there any shafts worthy of rappelling into? That's my specialty!🧗♂️💪
@utahradioman Not sure. I haven't explored any of these mines. And most are blocked off. If you can find a way into the hidden treasure mine, I know that is a big one with rappelling.
