Hey Phill, i too have a pretty substantial collection. However it dosent really bother me about possibly not watching them all again before my time is up. I suppose i see it more like having the option to go back to movies ive enjoyed, i use letterboxd now to log my enjoyment of the movies i watch and if i can see any re watch value in it for myself. I find this has also helped in showing which ones i can part with too when i look back over the ratings ive given them and if at the time of viewing i could see any rewatch value. I suppose for me not having a big collection is like only having baked beans in your cupboard for the rest of time, sure u can probably survive but my god it would be nice to have some more option's in there in case u fancy something different. Even if u dont end up eating it all before u check out! 😅 all the best, Ash,
Love the baked beans analogy 😂 Letterboxd is a great shout, I’ve used it before but always always forget. I’ve not used it for months (again). I do have a bunch I know I need to clear out. But I also have those titles that I’m on the fence about that I should look at another way to keep hold of… just incase. I think I was just a little surprised when I counted up how many movies I had. I know at times I get swayed when looking at others pick ups. Just had notification of two more on the way. Excited to dig into the extras on Guillermo Del Torros Pinocchio and check out RoboDoc. I’ll always collect and always have a solid sized collection. Just need to not allow it to get out of hand. Any clue what sort of size your collection runs at ? Is it all physical ? (I have a number across digital too 😂) Thanks for you comment Ash 🙌🏼
@PhillwithadoubleL In terms of those titles u mentioned, that you feel you probably could move on but just don't, I 'de-case' these and store in plastic wallets (steelbook protective sleeves if u ever consider doing the same) with just the blu ray sleeve and disc. In alphabetical (ish) order in storage draws. Bit like a movie filing case I guess. This became a crucial stage in my own collecting as it saved SO much space on the shelves and left a much more curated collection out on show. I use the app CLZ to scan in the collection and keep track of the titles I have, really useful if I'm buying movies when I'm out and about as I can just double check if I already have a movie. Saved me buying so many duplicates over the years! The blu rays are just over 3000 and 4k's about 75 🙂
@@popcornandhorror funny you should mention plastic sleeves. I just received delivery of a bunch this week. Just need to find a little time to go through some titles that could possibly be ‘away’ and in the sleeves. That’s a solid number of movies. If the sleeves and storage work for me. I think it could be a future option.

I’ve fallen into the addiction trap in the DVD era, just collecting to basically have a house full of DVDs (most of my money went to the charity shop in the end). Now, I just pick up films I like or films which I’ve seen reviewed and think I’ll be interested to see. In todays era of boutique labels it’s very easy to look at second sight, arrow etc and think I gotta have all of these just for the cool packaging. It’s a question of discipline, picking out the 1 or 2 releases I really want and letting the rest go, even if they are “Limited Edition” and you’ll never own them if you don’t jump on it right then and there.
I’m with you. Trying to have the discipline to let some things go. Thankfully a lot of the limited things do seem to get a more standard release further down the line and I’m happy with that. The limited editions do look nice but it’s usually things I don’t really care too much about. I’m trying to curate down my collection to make sure I’m only holding the things i really care about rather than the everything and anything for the numbers. I have an ok amount of space but want to make sure I get back to keeping the collection within those limits. Looking at the numbers did actually surprise me. Just shows how easy it is to build up. I’ve got a big pile of movies on the edge of being shipped out to CEX or eBay. Just that little thing in the back of my head about if I really should clear them out.
@@PhillwithadoubleL Let them go mate - back in the day I would just get anything and everything - half my collection was ex renal stuff like "40 year old virgin" and "Dodgeball" etc - fun stuff, but basically silly comedies you won't want to see more than once every few years and can easily be streamed. These days my aim is not to buy any shelf filler chaff in the first place - I limit it to Horror, Selected action films (and by that I mean 90's stuff as anything produced now is crap) and psychological drama, stuff with substance worth having or stuff that evokes memories with me. The purge will feel good. The companies are basically artificially producing rarity with these limited edition titles - it may have a limited print run, but it's basically all still mass produced plastic which could be reproduced anytime. I'm a big gamer and also (in fact more so) collect retro console stuff - rare to me is a ps1 game, long out of print and hard to get hold of.
90s action was the best. Looking back, the stuff I considered sub par back then actually seem somehow better now… I think because of the weaker entries that we’re getting nowadays. Even some of the 80s action… I mean, it’s 2023 and they’re leaning on yet another sequel to an 80s action flick (Beverly Hills Cop). Sometimes when pulling things from the shelves I actually check iTunes / amazon to see how easy it is to stream… or even check ebay for how much it would cost if I ever wanted to replace them. To be honest, most are pretty much worthless now. I see lots of people literally having to give away DVDs because not many are interested in having a collection anymore. It’s too easy just to rely on their streaming subscriptions.
I like to see the number of my total collection go up on my blu collection app and i like to post about each time i get 100 more. If i did have a "end goal" i guess id love to have the worlds largest blu ray (specifically blu ray) collection but that does come with a caviot. I wont just buy anything and everything my rules are. 1: an actor or director i like 2: a premise that intrests me 3: comes highly recommended or is a cultural touchstone of the industry. I also see myself as a bit of a historian so if there are films i will likely only see once i like to still own the copy for preservation and history sake. Knowing 1 copy will be perfectly preserved in my collection hopefully for a long while till my inevitable demise. At the end of the day though i dont see it as a competition if someone as 10 times as many as i do or 10 times as less i really dont care cause each persons collection is their own.
100% right, each person collection is their own. I often wonder that if I had more space if my collecting habits would be different. Would more space mean a bigger collection for me ? I used to buy anything to give a look and even if I didn’t really like them, just keep them anyway. It was a mistake and I think perhaps a reason why I’m wanting to get those numbers down. Remove those I just didn’t really like that much and then re assess the collections I think.
I’ve started dipping into streaming more and more. Not just for the streaming services but for the purchasing of certain digital movies too I’ll always want / prefer the physical but have found many benefits of having the digital option.
Noted. Last couple of videos I’ve been using a cheap lav mic. I’ll try to get it upgraded asap but will make sure I boost the sound for the next videos until then. Thanks for letting me know 👌🏼
Fear of missing it out is nothing but corporate bullshit Nothing truly goes out of print just the packaging. If you need one reason all these youtubers collect so many movies that they dont watch. one word GREED Steel book or slip cover you don't need both quit being so damn Greedy
I’ve collected movies I’ve not got around to watching… not that I don’t want to, it’s just that time escapes me. But I do now question that if I haven’t got time to get to them then why do I pick them up 🤷🏼♂️ I’ve pulled back a lot on my pick ups due to this. With the price drops and pretty easy availability of most titles. I don’t need them to be sat doing nothing on my shelves. And, not sure if it’s an age thing but I find myself being drawn to rewatching older favourites over some of the newer titles being released. I do own too many duplicates of different editions. Mainly if the extras have changed but then, it still at times feels a daft thing to do when the extras don’t get considered all that often.
I'm not a collector, but I plan to become one, preferably without becoming a hoarder. I think it's all about finding a way to indulge in both quality AND quantity in an appropriate fashion. Short answer: my personal take is to collect movies for quantity and dvds for quality. Long answer: Dvds are expensive. It takes precious recourses to produce and ship them, and storing them eats a lot of space. Thus it's a smart move to buy only selected (good and/or rare) movies on dvd, creating a collection of exquisite quality. Most movies, however, don't have to be bought on dvd to be collected. There have been times when we used to copy vhs tapes. Today, I can find a screen capture software that works for me and record movies from legal sources, edit out the ads and store them on both hard-drive and dvd-r. This way I can compile a collection of huge quantity. Some people may say that just recording a movie is not really collecting, but these people have no say in how I build my collection. Also, what should be the problem? The inferior image quality? Hardly. First, the image quality is certainly better than the quality of old fashioned vhs copies. Second, the image quality doesn't even matter when you don't really re-watch your movies. And third, if it happens that a movie is so good that I indeed re-watch it every now and then, then this movie certainly deserves to be bought on dvd. But that, of course, is just my opinion.
Y’know.. that’s something I actually think about a lot. How much is the collecting for people more about being able to post video / photos on social media Ijuat to have that thing to talk about or that interaction.
It can escalate into a mental issue / problem for sure. I think it’s that illusion at times that everything you collect / buy means something to you and that somehow it might have use in the future, at times I feel like it’s almost touching that hoarding problem. It’s not helped that some big name directors have been talking up the collecting and physical media and fully supporting that habit by talking about us being the custodians of preservation, it just gives another reason to collect and keep hold of more and more.
@@PhillwithadoubleLthose Hollywood directors want you to buy _their_ titles.... Keep them in a job! Most modern movies are..... Just _simple_ & _hammy_ ....

Absolutely, especially when it comes to those ‘limited’ releases. Even if the title doesn’t always fully appeal, you gotta have it if it’s limited, right ?! Not sure streaming has helped mind set either. Lots getting hung up on being able to ‘own’ a particular movie so nobody can take it away or alter it. It seems to have fuelled folks need to purchase.
@PhillwithadoubleL Take Arrow's release of Barbarella for example. I bought that based off pure fear of FOMO. And the fear of missing out on the limited box release. I watched it the other night, great transfer but I couldn't really get into it 😐.
@@Saxyboy-ox9gi that sounds like the perfect example of what I’m covering in my next video. Being swept away with the hype and purchasing movies that you perhaps wouldn’t or shouldn’t ordinarily. I suppose for me not having a big collection is like only having baked beans in your cupboard for the rest of time, sure u can probably survive but my god it would be nice to have some more option's in there in case u fancy something different. Even if u dont end up eating it all before u check out! 😅 all the best, Ash,
Love the baked beans analogy 😂
Letterboxd is a great shout, I’ve used it before but always always forget.
(I have a number across digital too 😂)
Thanks for you comment Ash 🙌🏼
@@PhillwithadoubleL Works for me at the moment 🙂👍🏻 and if I later change my mind about either having one of the movies out of storage or even comit to selling one, I can simply pop it back in a case 😎
1: an actor or director i like
2: a premise that intrests me
3: comes highly recommended or is a cultural touchstone of the industry.
I do not stream at all. An try to stick to box sets as best as I can
I’ve started dipping into streaming more and more. Not just for the streaming services but for the purchasing of certain digital movies too I’ll always want / prefer the physical but have found many benefits of having the digital option.
I like ur videos, but u gotta get a good mic. I can barely hear you
But I do now question that if I haven’t got time to get to them then why do I pick them up 🤷🏼♂️
I’ve pulled back a lot on my pick ups due to this.
The real reason people collect is to make youtube videos about collecting.
Y’know.. that’s something I actually think about a lot. How much is the collecting for people more about being able to post video / photos on social media Ijuat to have that thing to talk about or that interaction.
collecting is a mental illness, just buy the things that mean a lot to you
It can escalate into a mental issue / problem for sure.
Not all forms of collecting is a mental illness. You can't just make blanket generalization like that.
@@PhillwithadoubleLthose Hollywood directors want you to buy _their_ titles.... Keep them in a job!
Most modern movies are..... Just _simple_ & _hammy_ ....
@@peckerdecker I dislike this recent trend that some directors are jumping on. Selling that collecting their titles is the only way to preserve movies. It’s almost like they’re guilting the audience.
I think it mainly has to do with FOMO more than anything. I'm guilty of it myself from time to time 😂.
So many Arrow titles I purchased and then ended up listing on eBay. I think a bunch more need to go too. They’re just not ‘all’ for me. The impulse to grab them though. Ugh.
