Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins. Tragic without being a victim, seductive without being easy, conflicted but determined, and ultimately falls just short of the redemption you are lead to believe is inevitable. Witty, abrasive, powerful, conflicted and charismatic, the perfect companion. Also brilliantly performed by Claudia Black. The ultimate "one that got away" (depending on choices and dlc) with some belated, unexpected and potentially touching closure 2 games later in Inquisition. My favourite companion by a long shot, the anti-waifu.
I remember noithing else from that game, but I remember Morrigan down to the correct spelling of her name. One of the best written side characters in video games, and a good example of how to write good female characters (which only seems to be possible when you're not trying to make a point).
SPOILERS Following Morrigan into the portal at the end of the DA:O DLC and talking to her in inquisition afterward is the perfect closure. She seemed to long for a fairly normal life, and no matter how briefly, she got to have the loving and tender life she never thought possible or that she deserved. Morrigan forever.
I'm playing DA: Origins atm. And the only thing I knew about this game/franchise before, was that there is this one npc called Morrigan which has a truly unique personality. And after playing the game for a while now (am in the Circle of Magi Tower atm) I truly can say that this is by far the best written companion in DA:O. I like the conversations between Morri and Alis and Leyla so much. And the game explains why she is how she is in a cool and reasonable way. But besides of her, the other chars aren't that great. Alistair is good. Leylana, Sten and Wynne are trash. Shale is soso. That's my roster atm.
Eder from POE has to be my favorite companion out of any game in the past 10 years or so. He's just...such a bro. It's hard to explain. But the way he is written and voiced is so intricate, so deliberate. He has a very subtle, but very believable character development arc over the course of two games. He's often very conflicted about life, and he turns to you for answers. Otherwise it feels like he's a fairly closed in person, very melancholic. And when you need him - he's always there for you, ready to provide a much needed perspective on what is happening. He just feels like a very reliable, trustworthy friend.
Glad to see Pallegina getting some love. Even when she isn't in my main party for a playthrough, I always try to do a few quests with her just because I really like the character.
Garrus Vakarian is the best BROmance of all the rpgs i have played , really feels like he is you friend and not just following you for "reasons". Minsc from Baldur's Gate I & II is also one of my favorites because BG I is the game that made me fall in love with Crpgs and Rpgs in general.
The core team in Planescape: Torment (Morte, Anna, Falls-from-Grace and Dak'kon) had set the bar in NPC character development very high, and so all characters that have followed since have been written to the best of the writers' abilities trying to match that level of exposition, motivation, drive and also "evolution" through their character arcs. i.e. In PST it wasn't only interesting to speak to those characters in detail to +x to AC or whatever (As a game-mechanic) - but also because they lent incredible depth to the plot and your own character arc.
One of my favourites is Viconia DeVir from the Baldurs Gate series. I will admit though, a lot of it is her voice actor, Grey DeLisle/Griffin, possibly best known for playing Azula from Avatar.
Met her a few years ago. My copy of BG2 is signed by her. BG was one of her first roles if I remember her right. Also...the Voermann sisters in Bloodlines. Sweet Jesus.
@@echo12345ish Haven't gotten that far. By the time BG3 came out, I was completely over 5E. Made it hard to get into the game (plus my computer can barely run it).
Glad to see another rare Sebille appreciator. I always picked her as a main if i go for origin characters run. The large portion of Divinity community seems to hated her for wrong reasons
Her route and lohse's were the most rewarding for me to finish....sebille's for how sweet she becomes.....and lohse for how lore satisfying it is especially when she finally plays a song for you.
Blackwall isn't the strongest, or smartest, or most charismatic of the Inquisition companions... but he is the most committed to protecting others. You can see how he approves of autonomy, and responsibility, and selfless service. He earned his redemption, and is my favorite of that bunch too.
One of my favorite compainon is none other than "The Nameless One" from Planescape : Torment. Yeah, yeah, I know, the Nameless One is the playable character but it is also multiple people that talks to you through memories, diaries and the likes. But the way the Nameless One's past lives teach you things and speaks to you, accompanying you through your whole journey, is pretty similar to how a companion works.
Some of my favorites: Parvatti and Max (Outer Worlds) Amiri (Pathfinder Kingmaker) Loshe (DOS 2) Liara and Wrex (Mass Effect) Varrick and Morrigan (Dragon Age) Nick Valentine (Fallout 4) Eder, Serafen, Xoti (Pillars of Eternity 2) Glory (Shadowrun Dragonfall) Guardians of the galaxy all companions are amazing.
Jolee Bindo from the first KotOR is one that still stands out. Not only was his voice acting well done, he does a bit of Kreia-ing (yeah, I turned her into a verb) before Kreia was a thing. Even his side quest resolves without light or dark side points.
Jolee is great, but he didn't do any Kreia-ing really. He just says prequel's massage against jedi's blind tradition and apathy and he still follows classic SW morality.
Your description of Blackwall made me think of Mordin Solus. The Mass Effect Trilogy is probably my favorite game/series of all time. And Mordin really feels like he's also just trying to right the wrongs of his past as well. You find him in the clinic just trying to save people, through both medical knowledge and with the business end of a gun when the gangs come calling. Playing through, you find out about his involvement with creating the genophage, and realize that everything he does is about his guilt about what he did to the krogan. Finally culminating with his sacrifice to reverse the genophage. I'm convinced that you can make any true Mass Effect fan cry with the phrase "Had to be me. Someone else might've gotten it wrong." It still makes me tear up just thinking about it.
I like Alistair. To me he is a great role model, a far more complex character than he ever gets credit for and one of a very select group of companions who you can actually see as a friend in the real world (I mean, we all love Garrus, and Shepard can deal with him - but for reality, he's rather violent, unpredictable and rough). Alistair genuinely cares about other people yet he doesn't care what others think of him. Morrigan and her incessant bullying never really gets to him and he doesn't mind being called stupid or a bastard, even if only half of that is actually true. He is still a protector but without the toxicity of performative masculinity. He isn't afraid of being emotionally vulnerable and honest about his fears, but when it's you who is in a tough position, he will shield you and try to make you feel better. In a world without a Blight, you could totally see him in a job that's useful to society, because being a warrior is not his calling because he wants to kill things, but the role that is needed the most in his home nation. When the most needed thing is instead a king, he becomes that. Also, he's just hilarious. It's ironic, because they clearly tried for Varric to fill the same role (the permanent canon companion who has charisma, wit and an integral connection to the story), but with Varric there was just too much "look how great he is". Part of that can be excused with DA2's framing, but he always seemed to polished to me, never quite vulnerable or with reasonable flaws.
I'm surprised as much as you love Wrath of the Righteous that none of the companions from that game made it into your list. I absolutely adore several of them. Garrus is one of my all time favorites as well, was super excited to see him back in ME2.
Glory is one of my personal favourites too. I'm also a fan of FF12, The Zodiac Age, and some of the mods people have created for it, are very much worth it. Not only are some of the QoL mods great additions, but the complete overhaul The Struggle for Freedom adds hundreds of hours of fun. Foreign Lands is another complete overhaul that's interesting.
I'm currently replaying ff12 while recovering from surgery. And I agree Balthier is always brings a cheer to me, (and Vaan as well). My favourite is Basch because he feels genually upset by the war and its effect on innocents. Overall Zodiac Age is upgrade on the base game, with the change that instead of a universal License Board you can pick from 12 class based license boards (max of 2 per char). This leads to fun char building, especially after a update that allows you to reset the boards at Mont Blanc.
@@Sairishere Ashe was, but it was changed because of concerns over guys not wanting to play as a girl. lol But Balthier would've been a fine replacement, so would've Basch... Vaan was not... But the idiot making decisions at Square at the time thought the annoying tween would be more marketable as a protagonist. And thus we got the worst and most useless protag FF has ever seen. FF12 is fantastic despite that, but damn does it suck it had to be this way.
If I were to make a list, it might look a bit like... 1. Morte 2. Kim Kitsuragi 3. Kaelyn the Dove 4. Hiravias 5. Annah-of-the-Shadows 6. Viconia 7. Kreia 8. Sagani 9. Khelgar 10. Nok-Nok There's a few I'm surely missing, but this feels about right at the moment.
@@Rhygenix I love how catlike he could be at times. Had that vibe of the "adorable serial killer with a Napoleonic complex" about him. All of the goblin personification and interactions throughout Kingmaker were easily my favorite thing about the game.
Vatnir from poe2 is my favorite companion, for he is a coward, an unwilling cult leader, and a really interestingly written character who added a different flavor to watcher's team. He may not be a "good companion" but every interaction with him and how he sounded so grudged during battle made me love him more.
Hi Mortym! In any medium (books, movies, video games, etc.) a redemption arc is very appealing to me. So when you chose Blackwall for this reason, I totally understood where you were coming from. Thanks again for another excellent video!
You may want to check out Noah Caldwell-Gervais' 'Thorough look at Neverwinter Nights' (on TH-cam) for a rather amusing OPPOSITE take on Tomi's 'quiet nature'.. ;0) "Aaiy it's Done!.."
Started replaying NWN2 recently and I think it has some of the best companions ever. Just Khelgar and Neeshka alone and their dynamic through the game is pure gold, one of the few relationships that actually develop throughout the game and are not directly tied to your main character. Another companion that no one ever talks about in NWN2 is the gnome bard, Grobnar, one of the silliest and likeable characters in gaming.
Kaelyn The Dove is my favorite companion from any game. Followed probably by SPOILERS from Throne of Bhaal... Morte and Dakkon from Planescape, and Urdnot Wrex rounding out the top 5. Tali would probably be my 6 and Magus from Chrono Trigger my 7 Origins Morrigan my 8. But MoTB had my favorite companion of all time definitely. I wish Mask of the Betrayer had been a full release, stand alone game honestly...
oh nooo lol Grobnar made me want to punt him, but like in a good way I guess. totally agree on Khelgar and Neeshka. Also loved Gann Safiya and Okku, what a band, what a couple of games if you love good companions.
agreed on deekin even outside lore and being just a funny and nice companion... a bard that can identify your whole inventory , buff you and sing is SO damn amazing
Let's see: Qara(NWN2), Vivienne(DA:I), Daeran(WotR) and to a certain extent, Morrigan. I just love having my character hang out with the Regina George archetypes and the hijinks that ensue in their presence. For a more personal preference, Serafen(PoE2) was a real suave and funny Mofo.
Sirin (realy underated character) from Tyranny(as for me there must be all Tyranny's companions except Killy), Hydwin(/Jodariel/Rukey as team) from Pyre, Gann from NWN2/Tekehu from Pillars of Eternity II(very similar but Gann first)
Man i really regret taking so long before finally starting to have Sirin around. Wouldn't have wanted a tuned down introduction to her but by Kyros the girl makes it hard...
Love your videos :D . I cried at the end of nwn hordes of the underdark when you see what happens to your companions especially what happens to deekin, and i loved seeing him in nwn2 again :D
The thing that pisses me off about FF12 is that it felt like it would be better if Balthier was the main protagonist. It just started to feel like Baasch was playing babysitter while the adults were trying to save the world. Plus Asche as a character doesn't get enough credit imo. She's a really good female character.
I really liked Glory, I was using that picture you use as a thumbnail as my my laptop back round for a while. I really couldn't put a list together as companions are such a big part of games now (and there are so many great ones), except for number 1 which is Garrus from the ME trilogy. Love that guy!
Good picks. Don't think I've seen anyone like Pallegina this much, I definitely couldn't get into her character much. Maybe next playthrough I'll try her more.
From SR: Dragonfall, Dietrich was one of my fav. While his story wasn't too strange, he was someone who had seen it all and became quite jaded by his life experience. I also liked the way we can influence him regarding his totem. I also like Racter with how his condition served to further certain aspect of the lore in the game.
@@goransekulic3671 Personally, Dragonfall was the peak of that TRILOGY. Hong Kong was ok but didn't manage to reach DF level and I am not sure how to explain it. HK story was even more personal than DF. The stakes were still high, things were more complex. And yet it didn't hit quite as hard as DF.
@@Blue_Lunacy Because writing was odd, like it lacked an editor or something. It was so god damn prosaic and flowery with tons of irrelevant data. Now, compare that to Dragonfall. HK is a better game(some much needed improvements), but overall? Dragonfall is a better experience.
My favourite companion might just be Sten from DAO tbh. His twist on the fish out of water trope is often hilarious and the way he carries himself makes him feel like you’re legit making headway whenever you gain approval. Just everything about talking to him is perfect. I love how there’s never a right answer with him, but he always asks his questions as a way to judge your character
Balthier is my best character as well he has that charisma that just gets me hyped 😍 and you should definitely start playing the zodiac age as it’s just amazing, I have it on both Nintendo and ps4 and I can never get bored of the game and it’s atmosphere, I’d love to see you talk about this masterpiece 😍
Top 12 for me would have to be (in no particular order): HK47 (Kotor) Tali (Mass Effect) Eder (Pillars of Eternity) Lohse (Divinity OS2) Garrus (Mass Effect) Parvati (Outer Worlds) Thane Krios (Mass Effect) Xoti (Pillars of Eternity 2) Jaal (Mass Effect Andromeda) Sabille (Divinity OS2) Nick Valentine (Fallout 4) My Pawn (Dragon's Dogma)
I love Durance from POE 1 - he is such an awful person with a fascinating backstory and the implications of Magran’s actions towards him after the Godhammer basically blow open a bunch of questions that fundamentally question the nature of the gods.
With Glory on the thumbnail you had already won me over. She might be my favorite overall. But I also really like Eder from Pillars of Eternity and Deadfire. Just a solid guy who kind of snubs the general idea of what a fighter is supposed to be by being extremely mellow and easy-going. The voice acting helps with that a whole lot too. And you get to see him question his faith during both games which makes for a pretty neat character arc. There is that kind of abrupt end to his personal quest in Deadfire though, feels almost unfinished. I also like Viconia in Baldur's Gate II. Initially because she lets the player get a look at what Drow are and how their society works, and then because she escapes all that and tries to make it on her own in the hostile environment that is the surface world, but without turning into a character that is just simplistically good like Nathyrra who is your Drow companion in Hordes of the Underdark.
I've always had an amazing ability to get my characters killed. In Skyrim, for example, I gave up on companions after getting 9 in a row killed. For that reason I have to mention Fawkes, the cheerful and almost unkillable super mutant from Fallout 3 who is on a permanent quest for "a good fight". Good vid and I agree with most of your picks.
BioWare in its prime had a sick streak for making memorable companions: Fall-From-Grace, Carth and Canderous (as two sides of soldier's coin), Isabella from DA2 and lot of fellas from Mass Effect (I only mention Mordin, Thane and Legion). Glad to see old not-so-good Kreia is being remembered. Myself I like everything about her very much but gotta give shout out to Atton and Hanharr. Atton has sick jokes and great development through game (especially shown with TSLRCM); he kinda reminds me of Morte. Hanharr shows well what happens when someone so physically powerful wanders with broken mind... Besides that, broken psychotic Wookiee is not something you meet on daily SW basis. If I'd was to pick one favourite companion from games, I'd choose Tifa from og FF7. Loyal and capable guardian angel. Her devotion to main char is commendable.
Clicked on this video cause I saw Glory on miniature. Then I read the title and immidietly though of Dwarf who wants to be a monk to beat ppl. And u included him
I began to appreciate Ashley (Mass Effect) a lot of more since, unlike Kaidan, she goes through an arc of accepting alien races. She also challenges the player's decisions with her own reasons rather than simple opposition (looking at you, Council). Lets be honest, Mass Effect is a power fantasy, Shepard can do almost everything right and their companions rarely, if ever, question their decisions. So its refreshing to see an opposing opinion that, over time, sees the value in the other side
Bro you gotta play the IZJS for sure. Really great way to experience 12. And I'd totally be down to banter about jobs with you. It's easily my 2nd favorite game in the entire series, far above the original release.
Garrus and Wrex from Mass Effect were my best buds. Morrigan is the most interesting part of Dragon Age, and Varric is a must-take character in any scenario. I have a real soft spot in me for Lemon in Shining Force II. Really cool twist. Doesn't really count, but shout out to Irenicus from BG2 for taking Imoen's whiny ass away for a chunk of the game.
Personally offended for not including Minsc and Boo in this list. 😝 Anyway, your videos bring me a lot of nostalgia from playing crpgs in the early 2000s, I'm even considering playing Baldur's Gate remasters in the near future. I really appreciate the your content! :)
The fact that you led with Morte from Planescape: Torment, one of the best, if not THE BEST, isometric RPGs ever created, makes you a winner in my mind. He is who I immediately thought of when I saw the video's title. The fact is that MANY of the companions in Planescape would qualify, but Morte is a particular kind of special.
Strong list, Balthier at number one is a surprisingly strong choice, also glad to see Deekin get some love, very underrated character. For me personally i'd include (in no particular order) Durance - PoE Jahiera - BG 1/2/3 Morrigan - DA:O Bastila - KotOR HK-47 - KotOR Auron - FF10 Although frankly the entire cast of BG3 could find itself up there as well
My favourites are: Kingmaker - Jaethal WotR - Wendaug/Regill Dragon Age Origins: Morrigan Baldurs Gate: Montaron Baldurs Gate 2: Korgan Mass Effect 2: Thane Final Fantasy X: Auron Pillars of Eternity 1: Eder Pillars of Eternity 2: Xoti DOS2: Sebille Neverwinter Nights 2: Bishop I think the trend in who i gravitate towards is quite clear haha.
I'll always have a spot in my heart for Fawkes. Lighting people up with that laser Gatling gun from a mile away while I look around confused. Also, while not traditional companions definitely the Arbiter from Halo 3 or any Marines in Halo 1-3. Or Scorch.
I've just on on your list in fact : Varrick. Otherwise my choices are totally different and will included Morrigan, Merril, Aewin, Areashulae, Linzy, Thane Krios, Imoen, Yennefer of Vengerberg (well a bit apart as it's at first a novel character), Knock knock, Minsc (and of course Boo), Siora and the best ever Tali Zorah
Two that come to mind for me are Morrigan from DA and M'rissi, a mod companion for Skyrim. The very first time we meet Morrigan in DA: Origins just chills me every time I play the game. Claudia Black's voice and the slow decent from the upper level only to walk right past you (showing she in no way sees you as a threat) was just perfect. M'rissi's voice actress (the original, not the 2nd choice) was perfect for that adorable but extremely tragic companion character in Skyrim. In this case, tragic is almost an understatement as her back story is one of the darkest, most heart wrenching tales I've experienced in a game.
Alistair from DAO was a fantastic character as well. Seemingly generic and bland but turns out to be both a complex and multidimensional human being and also potentially has a complex role to play in the events of the world
Mine: The OG companions in Mass Effect. Rose of Sharon Cassidy: Fallout New Vegas. Kim Kitsuragi: Disco Elysium Sera: Dragon Age Inquisition Chie Satonaka: Persona 4 Lohse: Divinity Original Sin 2
Good ol, "What is it you want of me?" Virgil. He had a nice little story arc and backstory. Magnus, too. In fact, Magnus' quest is crazy good by itself, but if you manage to have Loghaire Thunder-Stone with you when you solve Magnus' quest, the payoff is *chef's kiss*.
Virgil, Dog, Magnus, Raven, Gar, Loghaire, Sogg (if I can keep him - usually give him evil cursed stuff and turn him into a murder machine). That's my Good squad. The Evil dudes are Dog, Torian Kel, Sogg, Geoffry Tarralonde-Ashe (great name), Z'an Alurin, Virgil. I've still never found Franklin Payne, and I have my OG physical box of the game.
@@simondaniel4028 I've only played through the game once and I upset Magnus by making a deal with the Schuyler's (although I later came back and killed them) so he didn't join my party. I intend to replay the game with him to see his story.
Since everyone is gonna throw out their favorites I need to bring up Christine from Fallout New Vegas Dead Money. She is very interconnected to the game and other expansions if you look for it but mostly what stuck with me was how you interact with her. She was made mute and brain damaged, so she cannot speak or write, or use any other type of language based communication. The only way you can communicate with her is through a series of skill checks based on her miming things and you understanding them. And despite that difficulty you can form a pretty deep relationship with her, and the reason why she was made mute and such was an amazing revelation. It stood out to me so much. She was such a unique companion that I have to bring her up.
I am once again asking you to review Geneforge Also yeah, companions are one of those things where it's hard to pick favorites. They tend to fall into "I love this character", "I hate this character", or worst of all "This character is boring and I don't care" in general.
Cool to see another geneforge fan. The geneforge games are my favorite games of all time but it seems like hardly anyone has played or even heard of them.
So happy you included Deekin! He's the best! (My love for Nathyrra will never die; and Sharwyn, Linu, and Daelen will always have a place in my heart; but Deekin is still the best. Xanos and Valen are cool, too, I guess. Boddyknock was robbed in the sequels. Probably by Tommy, the jerk. [I still enjoy Tommy.] Grimgnaw. Well. I always left him behind for a reason (even if I finished his dumb quests, stupid completionism).) (Also YouKnowWho from the last chapter of Hordes of the Underdark that I am not describing for spoiler reasons. That one is also top NWN companion.)
It's funny you said Balthier, as he was originally supposed to be the main protagonist. It was scrapped during production for the younger Vann. The developers didn't feel younger gamers could relate to the older Balthier.
Glad to see Mercy make the list, she is my favorite in that game, and Jahan is awesome too. Can't agree with Kreia as I can't stand her but I see why you like her. Garrick is second to Wrex for me but I just love the Krogan. My list would also have Gobbet from Shadowrun Hong Kong, Valerie from Kingmaker, Wenduag from Wotr, HK-97 from KOTOR and Neera from BGEE.
Sarevok from TOB was one of my favorites too. Esp after all the baggage your MC and him have , getting him to join your party and maybe even change alignment if you played your cards right.
No Sten of the Beresaad? He is probably my favourite companion in all of RPG gaming. The parables, the subtle humour, his weird customs... It's the only time I felt I was learning when talking to someone in a video game.
Kim Kitsuragi! No character has put up with more bumbling and yet remained so supportive without being too much of an enabler. Kim is just the best.
Real, Kimball the best

Eder from POE has to be my favorite companion out of any game in the past 10 years or so. He's just...such a bro. It's hard to explain. But the way he is written and voiced is so intricate, so deliberate. He has a very subtle, but very believable character development arc over the course of two games.
Ignus
One of my favourites is Viconia DeVir from the Baldurs Gate series. I will admit though, a lot of it is her voice actor, Grey DeLisle/Griffin, possibly best known for playing Azula from Avatar.
Met her a few years ago. My copy of BG2 is signed by her. BG was one of her first roles if I remember her right. Also...the Voermann sisters in Bloodlines. Sweet Jesus.
How did you react to seeing her again in BG3
@@echo12345ish Haven't gotten that far. By the time BG3 came out, I was completely over 5E. Made it hard to get into the game (plus my computer can barely run it).
Glad to see another rare Sebille appreciator. I always picked her as a main if i go for origin characters run. The large portion of Divinity community seems to hated her for wrong reasons
In my first play-through I remember just killing her because of her bad first impressions.
Her route and lohse's were the most rewarding for me to finish....sebille's for how sweet she becomes.....and lohse for how lore satisfying it is especially when she finally plays a song for you.
@@Geraduss same LMAO
Yup and her unique ability is really cool for story purposes. I usually pick her too.
sebille is awesome as a companion. prefer her over lohse, but lohse is still pretty good.
Loved playing as Lohse and learning Sebille’s story, was an amazing RPG experience I’ll never forget.
Nice! Really been looking forward to this video and Morte is a great choice. I'll never forget the 'don't trust the skull' scene.
Same here! Those were some complex feelings that scene evoked. Wonderful writing.
Blackwall isn't the strongest, or smartest, or most charismatic of the Inquisition companions... but he is the most committed to protecting others.
You can see how he approves of autonomy, and responsibility, and selfless service. He earned his redemption, and is my favorite of that bunch too.
Glad to see Deekin on the list. He's definitely one of my most favourite companions.
Deekin made the list! I love him, he is a treasure.
Some of my favorites:
Parvatti and Max (Outer Worlds)
Amiri (Pathfinder Kingmaker)
Loshe (DOS 2)
Liara and Wrex (Mass Effect)
Varrick and Morrigan (Dragon Age)
Nick Valentine (Fallout 4)
Eder, Serafen, Xoti (Pillars of Eternity 2)
Glory (Shadowrun Dragonfall)
Guardians of the galaxy all companions are amazing.
Jolee Bindo from the first KotOR is one that still stands out. Not only was his voice acting well done, he does a bit of Kreia-ing (yeah, I turned her into a verb) before Kreia was a thing. Even his side quest resolves without light or dark side points.
I don't remember this character in the game at all, very strange! I must have totally missed him somehow!
He’s like a light side version of kreia, as he’s still against the sith but hates the stupid rules of the Jedi.
Jolee is great, but he didn't do any Kreia-ing really. He just says prequel's massage against jedi's blind tradition and apathy and he still follows classic SW morality.
Jolee is infinitely better than kreia
He is great. All what you said plus he has some hilarious dialogue giving you practical advice on dating and his aptitude for musicals.
It's just cus the world isn't ready for Cam
I'm a big fan of Seelah myself; I liked that she was a paladin who wasn't uptight or self-righteous. I'm still very sad she wasn't a romance option.
Bathier being here just made my day. He and Fran just make that game for me.
Garrus and HK-47 are my favorite companions in gaming. In recent games Arueshalae comes into mind.
I love Balthier so much. Hands down the best character in FFXII and my favorite in the series.
The voice acting for he and Fran were also so well done.
He was supposed to be the protagonist wasn't he? Such a miss on Square's part to demote him.
@@Sairishere Ashe was, but it was changed because of concerns over guys not wanting to play as a girl. lol
But Balthier would've been a fine replacement, so would've Basch... Vaan was not... But the idiot making decisions at Square at the time thought the annoying tween would be more marketable as a protagonist. And thus we got the worst and most useless protag FF has ever seen. FF12 is fantastic despite that, but damn does it suck it had to be this way.
Agree, he will always be my favourite FF character and him and Fran the perfect team :D
If I were to make a list, it might look a bit like...
1. Morte
2. Kim Kitsuragi
3. Kaelyn the Dove
4. Hiravias
5. Annah-of-the-Shadows
6. Viconia
7. Kreia
8. Sagani
9. Khelgar
10. Nok-Nok
There's a few I'm surely missing, but this feels about right at the moment.
Nok-Nok is both scary and cute at the same time. Nice pick
@@Rhygenix I love how catlike he could be at times. Had that vibe of the "adorable serial killer with a Napoleonic complex" about him. All of the goblin personification and interactions throughout Kingmaker were easily my favorite thing about the game.
Hiravias is a good character, i guess it is clear that the companions from PoE are well made.
Atton, from KOTOR 2. Viconia from BG 1 & 2. Wrex and Mordin from Mass Effect. Jackie and Panam from Cyberpunk 2077.
Love seeing Khelgar and Deekin on the list. For as little as he actually spoke, I really liked Tomi Undergallows from NWN1
You may want to check out Noah Caldwell-Gervais' 'Thorough look at Neverwinter Nights' (on TH-cam) for a rather amusing OPPOSITE take on Tomi's 'quiet nature'.. ;0)
"Aaiy it's Done!.."
How dare you forget Grimgnaw!
I had no idea Jahan was a companion in DOS. I should play that game at some point.
*Come ooon fiendling*
Two words: 'Imaginary lute'.
oh nooo lol Grobnar made me want to punt him, but like in a good way I guess. totally agree on Khelgar and Neeshka. Also loved Gann Safiya and Okku, what a band, what a couple of games if you love good companions.
Grobnar is so underrated as a companion in that game. Love him 💜
The character "Morte" has a very fitting name, as "Morte" means "Death".
Great list. So happy to see Balthier on here. Always thought he was great. Morte as well.
I saw Glory on the thumbnail and immediately liked the video.
agreed on deekin
even outside lore and being just a funny and nice companion... a bard that can identify your whole inventory , buff you and sing is SO damn amazing
Game writers are often surpassing movie/tv writers regarding both character development and story arcs
I love Morte! And his conversations with Annah xD
Cool video, just played through the Mass Effect trilogy and Garrus was an excellent choice
I really liked Glory, I was using that picture you use as a thumbnail as my my laptop back round for a while. I really couldn't put a list together as companions are such a big part of games now (and there are so many great ones), except for number 1 which is Garrus from the ME trilogy. Love that guy!
Go for the eyes boo
Blackwall is hugely underrated, great pick
When you said Deekin at first I thought you meant Deacon from Fallout 4. 6:39
Man, I wish Hong Kong was written better. Sometimes it feels like they didn't have editor on board. But yeah. Racter's awesome!
Totally agree with everything of the 2nd half of the video (Pallegina and onwards). Nice picks!
Blackwall!!! So nice to see my favorite companion ever on someone else's list!!
An honourable mention to Saravok in Bauldurs Gate 2. Cool to see the violin join the team.
Zaeed from ME2. Great character and a fantastic voice actor.
Top 12 for me would have to be (in no particular order):
HK47 (Kotor)
Tali (Mass Effect)
Eder (Pillars of Eternity)
Lohse (Divinity OS2)
Garrus (Mass Effect)
Parvati (Outer Worlds)
Thane Krios (Mass Effect)
Xoti (Pillars of Eternity 2)
Jaal (Mass Effect Andromeda)
Sabille (Divinity OS2)
Nick Valentine (Fallout 4)
My Pawn (Dragon's Dogma)
My favorites are Kim Kitsuragi from Disco Elysium and Eizen from tales of berseria. But Balthier and Glory are really good ones
I love to see anyone talking about FF12, it has such a special place in my heart
Varric and Garrus! Agreed on those two. Good list!
RIP Canderous's VA.
@@JnEricsonx John Cygan, very solidous performer. Gone too soon.
On the subject of Dragon Age, I really like Leliana. Something about priest-turned-spy that I love.
i also like "one of many". a really unique companion
Hell yeah mass effect companions :) garrus, liara and tali, classic ...
Saw Garrus come from a mile away :) He's your bro. I was surprised you didn't mention Eder. Great video. Ty for sharing.
Shadowrun Dragonfall❤❤ Great video as always
Personally offended for not including Minsc and Boo in this list. 😝
Anyway, your videos bring me a lot of nostalgia from playing crpgs in the early 2000s, I'm even considering playing Baldur's Gate remasters in the near future.
Been enjoying your content, keep up the fantastic work!
Strong list, Balthier at number one is a surprisingly strong choice, also glad to see Deekin get some love, very underrated character.
For me personally i'd include (in no particular order)
Durance - PoE
Jahiera - BG 1/2/3
Morrigan - DA:O
Bastila - KotOR
HK-47 - KotOR
Auron - FF10
Although frankly the entire cast of BG3 could find itself up there as well
Kreia and Garrus are top tier companions for sure!
Correction: HK-47 is the superior companion, meatbag
@@timothywillox8564 without a doubt!
Zodiak age feels like a 12000 hour mmo as a single player game. can't wait for the 100% review!
Eder from Pillars is my favorite for CRPGs. Him and Aloth have some of the funniest interactions.
My favourites are:
Kingmaker - Jaethal
WotR - Wendaug/Regill
Dragon Age Origins: Morrigan
Baldurs Gate: Montaron
Baldurs Gate 2: Korgan
Mass Effect 2: Thane
Final Fantasy X: Auron
Pillars of Eternity 1: Eder
Pillars of Eternity 2: Xoti
DOS2: Sebille
Neverwinter Nights 2: Bishop
I think the trend in who i gravitate towards is quite clear haha.
I love Korgan too!
Love your channel keep up the amazing work!
Seemingly generic and bland but turns out to be both a complex and multidimensional human being and also potentially has a complex role to play in the events of the world
Mine:
The OG companions in Mass Effect.
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: Fallout New Vegas.
Kim Kitsuragi: Disco Elysium
Sera: Dragon Age Inquisition
Chie Satonaka: Persona 4
Lohse: Divinity Original Sin 2
Glory in the thumbnail? Instant like.
Garrus is gangster as hell. Great choice on him.
Kim Kitsuragi, Garrus, Morte, Dak'kon, Virgil, Veronica, Arcade, Nick Valentine are the ones that spring to mind
I want a party of 6 Jan Jansens.
Jahan is really cool. Lore wise he adds a lot .
I am once again asking you to review Geneforge
Also yeah, companions are one of those things where it's hard to pick favorites. They tend to fall into "I love this character", "I hate this character", or worst of all "This character is boring and I don't care" in general.
Cool to see another geneforge fan. The geneforge games are my favorite games of all time but it seems like hardly anyone has played or even heard of them.
@@brandonwalker5011 Sadly true for most of Spiderweb Software's games
So happy you included Deekin! He's the best!
(My love for Nathyrra will never die; and Sharwyn, Linu, and Daelen will always have a place in my heart; but Deekin is still the best. Xanos and Valen are cool, too, I guess. Boddyknock was robbed in the sequels. Probably by Tommy, the jerk. [I still enjoy Tommy.] Grimgnaw. Well. I always left him behind for a reason (even if I finished his dumb quests, stupid completionism).)
(Also YouKnowWho from the last chapter of Hordes of the Underdark that I am not describing for spoiler reasons. That one is also top NWN companion.)
It's funny you said Balthier, as he was originally supposed to be the main protagonist. It was scrapped during production for the younger Vann. The developers didn't feel younger gamers could relate to the older Balthier.
Finally someone is calling him a Space Cop . Most people don´t know that Garrus is based on this film.
