Synopsis:
In September 1980, a film crew comes to a village to make a film about a famine, which killed five million Bangalis in 1943. It was a man made famine, a side-product of the war, and the film crew will create the tragedy of those millions who died of starvation. The film documents the convivial life among the film crew and the hazards, problems and tension of film making on location. The actors live a double life, and the villagers, both simple and not-so-simple, flock to watch their work with wonder and suspicion. But as the film progresses, the recreated past begins to confront the present. The uneasy coexistence of 1943 and 1980 reveals bizarre connection, involving a village woman whose visions add a further dimension of time-that of future. A disturbing situation, indeed, for the "famine-seekers"!

স্মিতা পাতিলের অভিনয় অসাধারণ। বাংলা ওনার ভাষা না হওয়া সত্ত্বেও উনি যেভাবে lip sync, মুখের expression এবং আবেগ ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন ছবিটিতে সেটা একমাত্র একজন দক্ষ আর্টিস্ট এর পক্ষে সম্ভব।

একটা অসাধারণ সিনেমা যা আমাদের জন্য আজও সত্যি হয়ে আছে এবং হয়ে থাকবে।সিনেমার প্রথমেই বলা হয়েছে "আকাল আমাদের সর্বাঙ্গে"। বাস্তবিকই আকাল আমাদের সর্বাঙ্গে - আমাদের সমাজে - আমাদের মানসিকতায় ,আমাদের অভিজ্ঞতায় - এবং জ্ঞানে । আমরা মরবো তবু মানসিকতার পরিবর্তন করবো না। সেখানেও "আকাল" । ছবির বাবুরা আকাল খুঁজতে ওই গ্রামে না এলে এই সত্যিটা আমাদের চোখে ধরা পড়তো না।সত্যিই এইরকম একটা অসাধারণ সিনেমা দেখে মন ভরে গেল।শুধু কষ্ট হচ্ছে সেই মহান পরিচালক যাঁর অক্লান্ত কায়িক এবং মানসিক পরিশ্রমের ফসল এই সিনেমা তিনি আজ আমাদের মধ্যে নেই।আমাদের মধ্যে অনেকেই নেই যাঁদের অসামান্য অভিনয়ের ফসল এই সিনেমা। তবে যাঁরা নেই তারাও এই কালজয়ী সিনেমার মধ্য দিয়ে আমাদের মধ্যে বেঁচে থাকবেন । সবশেষে এই সিনেমার সমস্ত অভিনেতা-অভিনেত্রী কর্মীবৃন্দ এবং অবশ্যই মহান পরিচালক মহাশয়কে আমার আন্তরিক শ্রদ্ধা ,ভালোবাসা ও যথাযোগ্য প্রনাম জানাই। শুভ কামনা ও ভালবাসা জানাই তাঁদের যাঁদের জন্য এই সিনেমাটি আজ আমার হাতে এসেছে। আমাদের মন,শিক্ষা, সমাজে যে "আকাল " আমাদের অগ্রগতির প্রতিবন্ধক তা যেন অচিরেই দূর হয়। নতুন চেতনায় সকলে উজ্জীবিত ও সুস্থ হয়ে বেঁচে থাকুন এই কামনা করি।

One of the greatest movie in Indian cinema. The hidden truth of our society comes out...it still exists in 2020 also..but obviously in different forms. Sreela Majoomdar was simply aawesome.Her silent looks tells us the pain of life. Salute to the legendary director Sri Mrinal Sen. He and Smita Patil is still with us with there immortal creation.

আমি খুব অল্প বয়স থেকেই একটু অন্য রকম ছবি দেখতে পছন্দ করতাম । সত্যজিত, ঋত্বিক, মৃনাল,তপন সিন্হা ছিলেন আমার প্রিয় পরিচালক । আকালের সন্ধানে সিনেমাটা আমি দেখে ছিলাম রিলিজ করার পরই হলে গিয়ে । সেটা 1980 র একদম প্রথম দিকে । just HS পাশ করেছি । আজ অনেক দিন পর আবার দেখলাম প্রায় 40 বছর পর । খুব ভালো লাগল । ভাবতে অবাক লাগছে দেখতে কিভাবে 40 বছর পেরিয়ে গেলাম । মনে হচ্ছে এইত সেদিন।
