Subarnarekha (Bengali: সুবর্ণরেখা Subarṇarēkhā) is an Indian Bengali film directed by Ritwik Ghatak. It was produced in 1962 but was not released until 1965. It was part of the trilogy, Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960), Komal Gandhar (1961), and Subarnarekha (1962), all dealing with the aftermath of the Partition of India in 1947 and the refugees coping with it. In a critics' poll of all-time greatest films conducted by Asian film magazine Cinemaya in 1998, Subarnarekha was ranked at #11 on the list.
Subarnarekha deals with the aftermath of the Partition of India in 1947 and the refugees coping with it. The film tells the story of Ishwar Chakraborty (Abhi Bhattacharya), a Hindu refugee from East Pakistan who goes to West Bengal with his little sister Sita (Indrani Chakrabarty) where he tries to start a new life. In a refugee camp, they see the abduction of a low-caste woman and Ishwar takes her little son Abhiram (Sriman Tarun) with him. He gets a job at a factory in the province, near the river Subarnarekha. The lives of the three souls changes drastically as they are left to face a life filled with devastating odds.

মনে হচ্ছে এতকাল এত সুন্দর জিনিস দেখা থেকে বঞ্চিত থাকলাম কি করে। ভাবা তো সবে শুরু। ভাবা প্র্যাকটিস করছি। হৃত্বিক তোমাতে মুগ্ধ।
ঋত্বিকের কাজের সাথে লেগে থাকুন। এই একজন মানুষ অন্তত মূলে থেকে ডালপালা মেলে কাজ করে গেছেন ওইরকম জীবনে।

ঋত্বিক ঘটক মহাশয়ের সিনেমাগুলো দেখার পর মনে হয় যেন এই জগত ছেড়ে অন্য জগতে চলে গিয়েছিলাম। অসাধারণ পরিচালনা। সত্যিই ঐশ্বরিক প্রতিভা ছাড়া এরকম সব সিনেমা বানানো সম্ভব না।

সত্যি এক অনন্য চিত্র দেখলাম এই সিনেমাটির মধ্যে। দেশ ভাগের যে কঠিন পরিস্থিতির শিকার হয়েছিলেন দু কূলের মানুষজন তার কিছুটা ছাপ আজ দেখে খুবই মর্মাহত হলাম। আমার দেখা এই প্রথম সিনেমা যেখানে রোমান্টিকতার আঁচ থাকলেও অশ্লীলতা বিহীন। সত্যিই অভিভূত হলাম.....
সেই ৬৫ সাল থেকে কতোবার যে দেখলাম।
বাবারব সঙ্গে, স্বামীর সঙ্গে, ছেলে বৌমার সঙ্গে। আর কিছুদিন বাঁচলে নাতনীর সঙ্গেও দেখবো।
দেশ ভাগের যন্ত্রণা যে কতো কঠিন তার এক জীবন্ত দলিল এই ছিনেমা। প্রণাম জানাই Rithwik Ghatak মহাশয় কে দেশভাগের এমন জীবন্ত দলিল ভবিষ্যত প্রজন্মকে উপহার দেওয়ার জন্য।
" সে কেনো রে", "রাত কত হলো", " তুমি বুড়ো কেনো হলে মামা", " নতুন বাড়ি ", " তুই দূর হয়ে যা" , " আমি তোমাকে ছেড়ে কখনো কোত্থাও যাবো না" কত সুন্দর সুন্দর ডায়লগ গুলো। খুবই সাধারণ অথচ কত ভারী ভারী অর্থ বহন করে। সিনেমা গুলো যারা দেখেনি তাদের সবাই দেখাতে বড্ড ইচ্ছে করে।

Subarnarekha is a startling film. I first heard of it in 1999 when my sister told me about it. After 23 years I just watched it for the first time! It is a great thing with the internet that you are able to watch some of the greatest ever films, otherwise you would not have a chance to get at. I had always considered Ghatak as a master film maker, although I had only watched one of his films in 1996. The aftermath of watching this film is that, I am held abreast with shock, amazement and a deep feeling of nostalgia, although I am from Sri Lanka, there is the possibility to look through the eyes of the film maker.

True that. These Indians and the Bengalis haven't learnt to look beyond Satyajit Ray, but Ghatak was far more brilliant a filmmaker than Ray and these poor Bengalis fail to acknowledge that. They don't even spend one third of the words they say on Ray about Ghatak. Bengalis don't realize how lucky were they and how unfortunate they are!
Ghatak's cinema was provocative, and no one could intake, or digest his films and method, given the period of time. They couldn't digest it back then, and they still can't. He was a brilliant filmmaker, and in my opinion, he was probably the best Bengalis have ever gotten. I absolutely agree with you.

Not entirely true. Bengalis atleast hold Ghatak in very high esteem- to the extent that just like there are Mohun Bagan- East Bengal or Uttam- Soumitra fan duels, A Ray vs Ghatak duel is always in the offing for many of them (including the average Bengali middle class people). Ray- Ghatak - Sen are the holy trio for a huge section of Bengalis, so much so that their unquestioned brilliance has put to shade the works of such formidable talents like Tapan Sinha, Rajen Tarafdar, Asit Sen, Debaki Bose etc ., just to mention a few. Honestly this is rather an unfortunate occurrence, but that's besides the point here.
The point here is that all this shows that the acceptance, recognition and respect for Ghatak among middle- class Bengalis is quite high. Rather inspite of his status as the "Big Daddy of Asian filmmakers", it is the fellow educated Indian from other parts of the country that simply fail to acknowledge his presence. For many of them, he is a name that simply doesn't exist. And this holds true as much for a Mumbaikar, as it does for a Chennaite.

Subarnarekha is among the few best films ever made in the history of world movies... and this masterpiece is an absolute gem of Bengali Cinema ... One may even find many contemporary notable film makers (that includes Anurag Kashyap) to have been influenced by the Ritwik Gahatak's pathos, magical visuals and absolute brilliance of telling a tale. A tale of humongous tragedy.

আজ এই সিনেমাটির শেষ দেখে মনে হলো আমার নিজের কিছু হারিয়ে হচ্ছে আর আমি নিজে চলেছি কোনো অনিশ্চিত এর পথে।এক মুহূর্তে জীবন কত পাল্টে যেতে পারে! তবুও জীবন থেমে থাকেনা।আমাদের আবার নতুন করে শুরু করতে হয়।হ্যাঁ এটাই জীবনের মূল মন্ত্র।
I first saw this movie over 20 years ago in an arthouse cinema in Vienna. It is a heartbreaking masterpiece. Afaik, there is also a better quality version available.
Nice movie. A heart touching depiction of the totalities of those who moved/evicted from one side of the partition to other.
A Great Predictor. What Late Ritwik Ghatak predicted long ago, the same trend is continuing as on date. Crisis for identity, inability to rise high inspite of having all excellence, as we abstain to accept the partition of Bengal even as on date. It's insanity and a self made conception. We like to be identified more as displaced persons, and not the dignified Indian Citizen.
