- In this $20 DIY tutorial we build a sound effects box you can use to make some pretty cool ambient music for your next horror film. You will also learn how to make some basic parts leading up to making The Apprehension Engine. This instrument makes some great Ambient sounds.

Make sure you do Omar I'd love to see the end result. You can buy these cheap plywood boxes at any art store. Pick up mics you can grab under $10 on eBay and those Rubber Percussion Mallets are so easy to make. Sadly I have 4 of them already in different colours lol. I will be doing a tutorial next on how to do the sound effects and how to play this horror box. Then we will be making The Apprehension Engine. Which is a full size horror instrument.

I need good blowing out candle wick sounds burning candle sounds and creepy wind sounds. What would be the best for that
If you like to make your own sounds may I suggest look at buying a sound recorder. I use the ZOOM H1 Sound Recorder when I am out and about. It would be great for recording the crackling sounds of candles and the wind etc.

eBay is your best bet. Just search Piezo or Pick up mic
I found them on eBay under “cigar box guitar piezo pickup”
Where did you get that contact mic?
I bought it from ebay. Search Contact Mic or Contact Microphone. There is a lot to chose from. Some have one pic up some have 3. I used one for this build.

hi, does anybody know how are the bouncy ball called in spanish?
Not sure but they are the little silicon balls found in those little dispensers. Most game arcades usually have a skill tester with them.

Once upon time there was a square wood box that I was watching over for someone to come and get it was there's had that box for about fifteen years guess the problem got started when they got cozy in the moment however the box had a plastic spider in it that would jump out on to your hand when you open it guess what they came back for the box one-day and I of course let them have it I mean it wasn't mine and I was in a good bad place in my life and there were mice around me at the time they put a mice in the box and the mouse beat the spider up not to mention the UN awareness feelings that I had for the gag trick box but its gone now and the meaning was just reminded I like your horror box.

Mine only makes the moan every 7 times. Kinda bumming me out.
Try using very fine sandpaper to take the shine off the ball. Also if you want really dull moans use those large bouncy balls. Let me know how they go.
I’ll probably have to get large bouncy balls. I have the normal sized ones.
b3rtne also make sure the wood box doesn’t have a stain on it (needs to be raw timber) and also use fine sandpaper on the box might help to make more of a surface to make it howl. Hope these tips help and get your howler working 😁
