Hey! Great post! I’m looking at a 1999 am standard to purchase. Great shape. Maple neck and rosewood fretboard. So the late 90s shouldn’t have an issue with the laminate? Or less of a chance of having issues than an early 90s standard, correct? Do you think the stock pickups are good on those? And last question, I promise 😂.. do you prefer these to the late 90’s CIJ teles (which are basically the same price from what I’ve seen). Around $1500 or so in good condition. Thank you!!!

I bought a new 1999 American Standard Stratocaster. It’s my favorite one in the herd. Those late ‘90s Stratocaster pickups are the best.

Your ‘99 am standard is your favorite sounding tele? I’m torn between an 1999 American standard I’m considering buying or a 90s / early 00s CIJ model. (Or a late 80s MIJ). Do you recommend the am standard based on your tele experience? Thanks! One thing that’s making me second guess the 99 standard is that there are so many posts talking about how 2012-2017 is the best period for “newer” teles. So I’m reluctant to pull the trigger on the 99. Also thought about getting a MIC classic vibe for cheap.. any experience with those compared to an American standard. (Asking all of this knowing that each guitar is different of course and assuming all my options would be in stellar condition). Appreciate any input! Thx!

@@RichmondChaffin Sorry I was talking about an American Standard Stratocaster. I’d say get the Tele from one of the coveted years you mentioned, just because of the reputation. If you ever want to resell it, it will be easier. And, you can feel good knowing you have one that is generally considered a better year model. If you really love guitars and playing, I would stay away from cheap ones. You will only have the urge to sell it and get something better. I like vintage specs, so the only Telecaster I kept is a 2010 Vintage ‘52 Hot Rod Tele butterscotch blonde.

Great video. New subscriber here. I have a 2010 American Standard Tele in Candy Cola and love it. Can you share your signal chain to get the awesome tones in this video? Thanks!

Oh man. My signal chain has changed a lot but that sounds like I was using a basic slapback with a UA Dream! Distortion was a Strymon Sunset.

I traded my Fender Strat Elite for A 2014 Standard Telecaster and I love it! Just couldn't bond w the Elite. Good trade very happy.

Good info. I'm on the fence thinking about a '93 American tele at a shop.

Look for a late ‘90s one

They weren’t constantly in production. They were replaced with the American Series in the early 00s for a few years. I’ve owned a couple. They had big frets. More like jumbo.

Nothing sounds like a Fender...like a Fender. A viable second option...after you get your first USA Fender (or two) is a G&L (even Indonesian with MFDs)...and the Schecter Nick Johnston HSS...love this trio!! Got a '93 and a 2016....and an 85 MIJ....others in the past....never heard of delamination issues. True about surplus, even lefties like mine.

I’ll have to try those sometime. Maybe I’ll luck into a G&L and give it a shot!

Is delamination a problem with rosewood fingerboard?

    • @IkeGuitar

Any from the early 90s will

No! Rosewood doesn't have a poly coating on it so there's nothing flake off. It only affects maple fingerboards.

Thi video ignores more than half the run of American Standards. I have owned several made after 2005 and they have all been exquisite guitars with none of the issues discussed here.
One of my current Teles is a 2013, which came stock with a belly cut and hot rodded custom shop pickups, both of which were standard 2012-2015. It is a breathtaking guitar that is better than later higher level Teles.

I have a modded 2012 Fender American Standard Tele, and I absolutely love it. It also has the belly cut, but the person before me put in DiMarzio pickups, the vintage bridge and tray with the vintage brass saddles, Fender locking tuners, and some other changes. I tend to play it more than my American Ultra Jazzmaster and Gibson Les Paul Standard...

Of course viable. All guitars are viable based on your needs and preference. I'm a rock and metal guy, hate country music, but live Telecasters. Personal decision...
