Hi from Wollongong, Australia. Thank you so much for this video. It brought back wonderful memories for me of my day trip to Barrow in 2005. It had been a lifelong dream of mine to visit this town. I finally got to do it at the end of a tour to Canada and Alaska. The tour finished in Fairbanks so I took the opportunity to make this dream a reality and flew to Barrow. It was early June and the sea ice still hadn't broken up. Barrow didn't disappoint me. Thanks once again.
The houses are on pilings to resist permafrost forces not for flooding. The ground will heave up and down over the year at the surface due to the frost cycle, so the houses are on piles that bear below the frost level allowing the surface to heave up and down and not affect the floor of the building.
Really love seeing my parents home town. I have been there as a kid and teenager. Sure miss being there seeing family. Need to plan a trip to go visit. 🥰😍
Barrow is where 30 Days of Night was set, isn't it? I love those creepy vampires and the town has such a great spooky-ish atmosphere. Thank you for taking us with you!
I’m usually not big on drone footage, to many TH-camrs get a drone and then it seems 50% of the posts are drone footage, but that was nice and interesting.
I really can't tolerate extreme hot or cold weather anymore. I'd still love to visit Barrow. It's on my bucket list but unlikely I'd make there so really enjoyed the video! Thank you for sharing!
@@TruckHouseLife Gotcha. By the way your paragliding off the mountain with skis on and landing perfectly on the other side of that creek/river was awesome. Flying in air=pure joy.
The pilings under the buildings aren't for flooding. It is to keep the structure from sinking into thawed permafrost. The gap is a heat sink, essentially. Even the large buildings are on pilings, all over the north slope.
I cannot imagine how anyone wants to live there, but great video. Isolation is one thing, but that is a whole different kind of isolation...and the whale skulls, unreal. SO huge...just love whales, they are so majestic.
I randomly bought a ticket to Barrow while staying in Alaska. The Top of the World Hotel is absolutely world class and makes the best food you can get anywhere in the US. The residents were super cool and one guy even let me rent his ATV for $100 a day. If you drive far enough down the beaches you'll see all kinds of beached whale skeletons. Polar Bears can be a problem even in summertime, I remember asking the inn keeper "Black bear you fight back, Grizzly you play dead, whats the protocol for a polar bear again?" his response: "umm...you die..."
Drone footage was quite beautiful. Haunting almost. I also dug the shots from the flight in. Barrow in December must be icyAF and kinda oppressive - those buildings and streets must look decidedly different then. SHeesh. Thanks for bringing us along. That market and its prices are most impressive - made me wonder what the wages are for workers there. Would be difficult to make ends meet I imagine.
If I needed a license (YOU would be the coolest instructor thats for sure) ..ps HOpe everyone passed~!!! As for driving your Truckhouse on those narly roads you take us on.....I may need some lessons thats for sure....lol Also, did some homework and looked up your good friend who was lost kayaking .....(my condolences) Mr Engle and you had some amazing adventures whitewater kayaking.....New Horizons An All Alaskan whitewater film.....LOVED IT!! OMG....it was soooo good!!! Cheers, Timmie and look forward to your next adventure!!! ps do you have any more suggestion for films for kayaking....would be cool to hear your thoughts ....Cheers, and yes I saw this before but who cares.....it got me to do some research!!! Love ya Man!!!
Appreciate the kind words:) There's a movie that just came out called The River Runner, great story and a few folks I used to paddle with are in there. Was on netflix a few months ago.
@@TruckHouseLife Thanks Tim....eee I have kayaked on the madawaska river (rouge river) here in Ottawa....years ago friends did river rafting with Owl outfitters....so I took a weekend course white water and have some epic photos.....but eventually bought a sea kayak for the St.Lawrence river here....but always enjoy river runs!!! Thanks for the movie tip...always appreciated .....big hugs!! lol
correction there are 2 places where you get can get your car trucks fix, SALS auto and A&D auto, And for the Seniors they can get their car truck fix for free at the NSB shop
My friend lives in Alaska, he's lived there his whole life he is now 66 years old. He said he's never seen the lakes so deeply frozen and frozen so long into the summer.... Very odd.
" downtown " barrow in infact the second oldest part of town, as first is " Nuvuk " ( Noo-vook ) where lots of the old timers were before barrow was a town.
Oh my !!!!!! The food prices , I’d starve at those prices , a person would have to make 100 bucks an hour to afford all that or just live off the land if possible , tide 44 bucks God bless them
Oil/Natural Gas industries are really big in Northern Alaska and they pay really well. Plus the fishing industry, scientific research funding and Gov subsidies help to keep the town going.
Hey Timmy! What's going on? I've already seen this video..a couple of months ago... I know that you have "New Content " . I believe you said that you were doing Another Long Term Trip..within the states. What's going on with that? Where are you Starting/Finishing? Thanks!😊✌🏕🏞
@@TruckHouseLife well thats good i need it next year haha, i just need to get my class a and my cousin has a job but idk about driving a semi in alaska lol but really i want to get my 6pack or 20+ captain license so i can fish for free 🤷🏻♂️ but thats only for like 3 months so i need something else…. and you gonna make it to hammertown in 6 months?
My biggest question is why do folks live there? I'm not familiar with Alaska, how can folks afford to even live there with food so high? I feel silly complaining about our food prices even during this recession here in Georgia.
So, I’m investigating the possibility of taking a job in the north slope… here’s my question - If groceries were that much, how much was the sweet and sour chicken? What’s the price of booze? 😱
There is in fact still a DMV in Barrow Alaska , but they just can’t seem to preform their own road testing anymore, because of COVID…why? That’s pathetically sad.
Don't know if I could live there, but the isolation is appealing. Tim you have an interesting life. Love your adventures.
I loved it that was awesome I never get to see such first-person views of places like that. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your just as gifted as your dad, in making things...cool!!!

Barrow is now referred to as Utquiavik, and has been for some time.
Yes, it’s the proper Inuit name for the town
It will always be Barrow to me.

I kept expecting your flights to be cancelled due to the icy fog, but I must have been mixing it up with your other Barrow Driving Exam video!

Didn't you take us along last time you went up there? How ever long ago that was. Still a really neat place minus the snow in June...geez
Yup sure did!
I think I saw this same video with you a few months ago, the difference being you got stuck there for a couple days.
Nope different video, same place though;)

Outstanding video love seeing barrow in june..how much was the sweet/sour chicken dinner?? It looked extra good..
Super good!
Thanks for helping me get my license!
Of course, maybe see ya on the road!
This may be a dumb question, but do you need a driver's license to drive the four-wheeler on a public Street? Barrows looks barren yet beautiful.
nope haha
I have the strangest desire to move to Barrow.
Good stuff....
That would take some eating adjustment to live there. I drink a gallon of milk a day usually not anymore if I lived there.LOL
No joke ! It’s exspensive up there .
Thumb up Timmy... Cheers...
I watched another yt family and the dad's been to barrows Alaska.

Speaking of horror….when are you going to take us to see the Brucknee in Whittier?
Hmmmmmm
(Sp) Bruckner.
So, how many drivers did you road test, and what was the pass/fail ratio? I just can't see you failing anybody--you seem too nice.
Can't tell exactly, but some people definitely don't make it/aren't ready.

$22

$18
