    Hey, I’m with ya on the “Whoever designed this…” comment. I think automotive design engineers should also have to work on them just so they can experience the frustration we feel!

    Thank you so much for this video. Gave me the courage to try and save the money. I'll note, on the 2013 Model year, they "split" the starter between two different units and they are not the same. You will need the one built for your car.

    I pulled one for my e350 from junkyard, was way easier to access bolts if you go from inside the van through the dog house.

      Only easier if the exhaust manifold was already off. Otherwise you'd still have to do it from under the van.

      That one on top was a tough one to get to!!! I have big hands, and apparently the engineer who designed bolt locations etc, didn’t take that into consideration!!! But, with the right combination of extensions, angle extensions and patience, I got it done…

      @@JumpermanTech thank YOU for such a good video. I had the same question about the small wire that comes with the new starter. I'm referring to the wire at 8:31, it's small and has the orange tape on it. Do I need to keep that on to reattach somewhere? Or can I just remove and leave out? Thanks again!

    4 wires total did not show or mention that thin wire dangling on selinoid?

  • @richardp5161
    @richardp5161 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So, if you can jump the starter - in effect you are putting the 12v from the starter power connector to the starter solenoid - just as the ignition system would in normal circumstances. If you can "jump" the starter doesn't that mean that the starter is good and you should look to see why you're not getting 12 volts to the starter solenoid?

    • @Eaglefreek300
      @Eaglefreek300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I was thinking the same. Probably just had a bad connection at the solenoid that needed to be cleaned.

    • @TraceyFeely
      @TraceyFeely ปีที่แล้ว

      12 volts is already at the Solenoid through your starter relay by this time. The Solenoid is not electrically pulling out your starter gear and engaging . Most new starters do not have exchangeable solenoids. Full out straight replacement. Good job jumper man tech. We’ll see you on the next refrigeration job. Where everything is done DIY.

    I just replaced the starter on my e350. It's a diesel so when I saw this video I chuckled at the comically small size of the starter on the gas engines. The 7.3 starter is easily 2x the size and weighs something like 5lbs? I actually had to massage the crossmember a bit to get the new starter in as the new replacements are slightly bigger than the OEM ones. Not a hard job, just not a fun one!

    Dude , loosen all the bolts first ,then start removing, you put all that starter weight on the last bolt as you were removing it, same as instal in reverse so you actually get it mounted properly,

    I have a 2002 E350 Super Duty, the starter keeps going bad. Come to find out, when you have a head gasket leaking oil, it seems to accumulate all up on the starter and solenoid... It ruins it unless you either fix the head gasket, if you can't afford to do that, or I was advised to take it to a car wash with a pressure washer and hose down the whole area underneath & starter to prevent build up.
    I had a friend replace the first time, part only cost $70, but I took it to a mechanic just down the way this second time because it happened twice in 4 months....bad move on my part being lazy..... they charged me $600......
    🤨😑😳😣
    This is definitely one thing to learn to do by yourself if you can because it's pretty simple and it will save you a ton in labor!
