- Cincinnati Reds 6 at Boston Red Sox 7, F/12 -- Home runs by rookie Fred Lynn, pinch-hitter Bernie Carbo and the Reds' George Foster made this back-and-forth affair a World Series game to remember through nine innings. Then Carlton Fisk waved, prayed, cajoled and otherwise willed his home run fair down the left-field line in the 12th, making this one of the most memorable games of all-time.

I was 8 years old, and I remember staying up way beyond bedtime to watch this game with my dad and my two brothers. All I remember is that my dad kept saying, "this is the best baseball game ever played and in the World Series makes all the more better." The next day school, many teachers and classmates were all sleepy all because we all watched Game 6 in our individual homes.
Watching this game brings back great memories of my late father.

@amberpuga7322 I was 10, otherwise our stories are the same. Up late with my dad. I lived in Cincy, so we didn't like the ending. BTW, this game was on a Saturday.
We watched this whole series in college, each game was exciting. I was a Big Red Machine fan, but a lot of my friends were Red Sox fans. Just a great, great series.
I don't even have to look at the screen. Just hearing the voices of Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek take me back to many of my most cherished memories as a youngster.

You got to love Dick Stockton's call of Carlton Fisk's Home Run in this game as that's the call you will be hearing forever on that magical moment.

I met Bernie Carbo, the guy who tied the game with the 3-run homer in the 8th. Really cool guy, without him, Fisk's homer would never have happened.

Watched, listened to, then watched this game in the autumn of my senior year in high school.

Along with the Yankees of the late 1930's, I think the Reds' farm system of the late 60's and early 70s produced more talent in a shorter period of time than any team in baseball history. If they could have kept their young pitcher healthy (Don Gullett, Wayne SImpson, Jim Maloney, etc.) they could have won 5 or 6 championships.
@@RRaquello Most of the Reds teams of the 70s were built by bad trades with the Houston Astros. GM Spec Richardson made a number of terrible trades that changed everything. The Astros should have won a bunch of pennants during the 70s, if not for their stupid GM.
I was 9 years old. It's very foggy. I was in the bleaches in right field. My dad brought binoculars. I looked through them when Lynn hi the wall and he looked dead.. After the end Fisk came out in what looked like to me was long underwear but probably a warm up suit and jogged around the stadium. Some guy jumped out of the stands and the police wore him out..lol..crazy stuff you remember..it was late for a 9 year old..fortunately we took a Vermont Transit Bus and got to sleep comfortably home...missed school the next day was the bonus
I always felt bad for Fisk and Yaz, great careers and retiring without any rings.

Reds fan here ,I agree but also Jim Rice,and Dwight Evans,and always thought to this day Fred Lynn swing was the sweetest i ever saw. If Rice played in this series do the reds win? Honestly prob. not. Rice,Lynn,fisk,,and Yaz. Cooper and,Evans too.Oh my That's right there with my Red machine. Amazing times.

I was 11 years old at the time. I watched the game on the TV in my bedroom while my mom hosted a Tupperware party in our rec room. Periodically she'd excuse herself from the party ask me for an update on the game. When it was over, she asked me if it had been a good game. I told her it was the best baseball game I had ever seen. I'd still say the same thing 48 years later.

For me as a 15 year old this was the sweetest time for all the 4 major sports leagues.
Cincy came back to take the Series, but watching the Sox perform the way they did was legendary. Reds deserved to win for sure with their talent fully loaded.
Growing up in the 80's, I always remembered the brief clip of Fisk waving like a lunatic down the first base line as NBC used that clip as part of their intro package to Game Of The Week. I never saw the actual game until tonight!
First things first....I never knew Dick Stockton worked for NBC! He was always the NBA broadcaster for CBS in the 1980's....called a lot of those classic Lakers / Celtics games. Also, pretty cool to see a pre-Charlie Lau Dewey Evans batting stance....sans mustache!
This is so cool to have the original broadcast in full! The only thing that would have made it even better is to have the commercials intact...but I get it....those kind of tapes are hard to come by. Most people back then just paused the tape when the commercials came on to save tape as tape prices back then were astronomical!

I watched this when I was a junior in high school. I was devastated being a Reds fan, at the same time I was in awe of what a great game it was. I got most of the Reds autographs in 1973 in San Diego at the Town and Country Hotel. So awesome to walk up to them and ask for an autograph and they would sign without hesitation. I knocked on Sparky Anderson's hotel door and he answered it and talked to me for about 3 minutes and got an autograph. What a gentleman he was. Most players these days would tell you to "get lost".

1) Carbo's homer was WAY more important than Fisk's homer. If Carbo doesn't homer Fisk doesn't even come to bat. But Fisk gets all the glory and Carbo gets none (or very very little). Shame. Carbo was the HERO of Game 6.
2) Drafted AHEAD of Bench, Carbo could have been one of the All-Time GREATS.

I was a Reds' fan, and I am aware of the place this game has in baseball history, but I always point out that the Reds came back to win game seven the following night, and that the 1975 Reds were one of the greatest teams ever.

I watched this whole game except I missed the last inning so I missed Fisk's home run, LOL. It was just a few weeks after the start of my first year of high school, so I ended up having to go to bed after 11th inning. Oh well, I've seen it a thousand times since.
After the game, Rose told Sparky Andersen this was the greatest game ever played. Can't argue with that.
Can't say it's better than Game 7 of the 2016 series.

I like the camera coverage way more during this time than today. Today they pan the dugouts too much and too many close ups of players faces. Keep the camera on the game and out of the dugouts.

This game is so legendary, it's one of the rare times where a game won by the eventual losing team defined the WS. So much so, that Reds catcher Johnny Bench often says (tongue-in-cheek) you get the impression that the Red Sox won, 3 games to 4.
Closest thing I can think of was 2001 when Tino tied it in with a HR Game 4 w/2 out in the 9th, Jeter won it with a walk off, then the next night Brosius ties it in Game 5 again on a HR with 2 out in the 9th, and Soriano wins it with a double in the 12th, and it helped NY rally back into the driver's seat, up 3-2 in the series, right after 9/11 had devastated the city.
Now I know that in the end, the Luis Gonzalez single to win game 7 was what really defined that series, but you can't talk about the 2001 WS without also mentioning games 4 and 5.
Also, I remember Fisk was the one that said that Boston won that series 3 games to 4. I wish I could find the video clip of it that I used to see a lot on tv as a kid. It sounded like he was speaking for the whole city when he said it, like maybe they didn't win the whole thing but they could still take great comfort in winning that game regardless. Would Bench on the winning side have conceded such a notion? I would think he'd want to remind people who actually won the series (like Joe Morgan used to do when he was announcing).
@@billny33 yes 2001 is definitely another one, as epic as game 7 was that series stands out because of 9/11, Bush’s first pitch, and the ending of games 4 and 5. Even after the eventual defeat in game 7, it was really a New York story; Arizona was like a supporting character

I m 67 years old, I remember 1967, well I was 12 years old in what grade,? We had a great teacher in our grade school named Mr. A, and he d teach us chess after school, he d roll in those old over sized tv to watch play off games, so in 67 we are watching the deciding game with red sox winning the pennant, and Mr A, tells us HE KNOWS the Boston red Sox shortstop, Rico P, that they went to school together...wow, what memories, back in the day we had those small hand held radios, transitory, we followed Tony C. until he got hit in the eye, and Long Island's HERO Carl Yaz...I played 3rd base on a winning Northport high school team, with Bobby Jazakonitz, we called him Jaz, just like Jaz, or was it Jazz...he played shortstop, 3rd base exactly same as me. Bobby Wine came from East Northport too. Philly shortstop, I met him, I hit a scorching single or double against his younger brother, but younger by 12 years.

Foster catches it about 2 feet in front of the side stands in left, and about 2 feet behind the 3rd base bag.
He easily throws out the runner, Denny Doyle at home for a rally killing double play.
How did the 3rd base coach wave Doyle on home?
The only thing that wouldve saved Boston here was a Steve Bartmann character to interfere with Foster.

Dewey Evans makes an impossible looking catch off of Joe Morgan in the 11th, and turns it into a double play to end the inning.
The more you look at this great play, the more it looks like it wouldve been a home run ovee the lower wall.

The runner on 1st Griffey, wasnt even in the picture when the ball was relayed back to the infield.
He had no clue what happened.

2:18:48 Bernie Carbo's two-out pinch hit three-run home run to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th is one of the most underrated home runs in baseball history. Everyone talks of Carlton Fisk's game-winner in the 12th but without Carbo's home run, the Reds could have won the game and the Series in 9 innings.
No one talks of rookie Fred Lynn's three-run homer in the bottom of the 1st either. 16:05

And if Johnson puts in a pinch runner for slow footed Doyle in the bottom of the 9th, probably no home run by Fisk either.
What a great homerun from Bernie, just as exciting as Carlton's homerun
Carbo was also called out at home in the 1970 World Series in a controversial call by the umpire.
Bernie admitted later that he had smoke marijuana in the clubhouse before coming up to bat and hitting that home run.
Tiant is pitching for the second time in a row on 3 days rest, after 2 complete games and with a pitch count of around 200 in the last game. And was probably closer to 40 than 35.....

Best baseball game.EVER. I'm a Reds fan and even though they lost it was still an awesome game. I was 10 years old and the game ended after 1am and my parents let me stay up to watch the end. To this day they always show during the pregame clips Fisks homerun.
Well I mean the Reds bounced back and won Game 7 so the sting of this loss surely ended right ?

This series is available on Netflix. It's worth the time to watch it just for all the blast-from-the-past things you'll see. Like, for example, Tip O'Neill sitting in the front row for Game 1 in Boston, smoking a big fat cigar in the seats. George Bush, Sr. also in the front row. Joe Garagiolla's hilarious plaid sportscoat. The 1970's clothing on all the fans. Oh, and not to mention one of the best World Series of all time.

Thinking now, 40+ years later, the players first mentioned in the broadcast, most should have been or are in the Hall of Fame: Louis Tiant, Sr & Jr, Carlton Fisk, Pete Rose, Ken Griffey, Carl Yastrzemski, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench...and that was just the top of the first inning. Greatest World Series Game in my lifetime - and I am 62 now.
I think the commentary is as important as the action of the game which is why I like to listen to old time games because the announcers were both respectful but still instilled their personalities into their work.

Eh, it’s overrated.
Yeah it’s a cool way to end a WS game but it means so much less knowing ultimately Boston fell in Game 7.
This is STILL considered by many to be the greatest baseball game of all time.
It's also notable because this is the game where Dick Stockton, who was working this game with Joe Garrigiola in the last year the team's local announcers worked home games during the playoffs for NBC, met his future wife Lesley Visser, who was covering the game I believe for The Boston Globe as I remember.
I recall Phil Rizzuto working the 1976 games at Yankee Stadium with Joe and Tony, so they were still doing it then.
Greatest? Not by a long shot.
Now if it actually ended the WS like 1960 and 1993, then maybe I’d consider it up there.
But knowing that it only delayed the inevitable in that Boston ultimately fell in Game 7 makes this a nothing burger IMO
Saw this on my 15th Birthday and it was just 1970 and 72 when the Bruins won the Stanley Cup.. a great time for a Toronto boy with no baseball team and no, um hockey team. What a great game and I'm loving seeing this again. GOBoSOX! And it's 3-0 RedSox in Game 6 this eve.

Nathaniel Levesque That's actually a sensible way of putting it :); the Red Sox winning a dramatic Game 6 in the 12th to force a 7th, & in the end, the Reds, after their 108 wins during the season, bent but didn't break & coming back to win Game 7 in hostile territory.

An all time CLASSIC game. I watched this game until the bottom of the ninth when George Foster doubled up Denny Doyle at home on Lynn’s fly ball. I was sick and went to bed thereafter.
Later on, my father came back and told me the Red Sox won it in the 12th on Fisk’s home run. I dramatically raised up from my bed, sick as I was, and my mom said, “Boy, you got up like you’re alright!”
I give the Reds all the credit in the world. To lose a Game 6 SO CLOSE to celebrating a title, put the party on hold, and come back the next day to win a Game 7 on the road down 3-0 is absolutely astonishing. So many teams would’ve collapsed, but not these Reds. They were amazing.
And who sells off a key first baseman and banishes a manager AFTER achieving back to back titles like the Reds did?? What a FOOLISH move by the Reds owner!!

I watched that game, unreal!!! Being a red fan we "WE ON IT IN THE END" in what many still to this day claim the greatest WS in history. Then next in 1976 was great too, if you were a red fan. 4-0 and out. Aganist the Yankees.
One of the greatest baseball game, being able to watch on t.v. A bonus it was a World Series game.
