Accident: An unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly.
But what if the incident is expected? Will it still be an accident?
Everyday more than 75 lakh people travel by Mumbai local trains. It’s an overloaded network of trains that’s often called the lifeline of Mumbai. But for some people, this lifeline spells death.
According to an RTI report, over 3,304 people died on the tracks in 2015 alone and around 3,349 suffered accident injuries. That’s almost 9-10 people dying every single day! Even though this number is way higher than the cumulative deaths caused by terrorism in the last decade, we simply seem to ignore it because these deaths, over the years, have become something we already “expect†to happen. The city moves on day after day, going about its business, unmoved, unaffected and mostly unaware.
Over 4,500 passengers are packed into a 9-car rake during peak hours, as against the carrying capacity of 1,700 (on an average, eight people are forced to stand in less than one square metre area). Most of the fatalities are from lower middle class families trying to get by in the city of dreams. Majority of the victims are between 21-40 years age group. Excessive overcrowding, uneven platforms and local railway crossings are the root causes. Mumbai Suburban Railway System has around 89 Foot Over Bridges (FOB) and 7 Subways. Considering that Mumbai’s Railway Network has 136 Suburban stations (36 Western Railway, 62 Central Railway, 38 Harbour Line), it is clear that the number of FOBs is inadequate. The film features stories of victims like Samir Zaveri, who became a railway activist after losing both his legs in a fall from a Mumbai train two decades ago, and Roshan, who lost both her legs on 16 October 2008, after being pushed out of a crowded local train near Jogeshwari, and was found “unfit†to study medicine, which made Roshan fight her case in the high court and acquire first class in her final MBBS exams eight years later. We also feature families of victims who lost their lives and how adversely it affected them- emotionally as well as financially. People and authorities majorly answerable for such accidents- the railway system, the Government and the passengers themselves- all form a major part of the documentary. The film sincerely explores the steps that have been taken to reduce daily accidents and then goes on to talk about the right solutions we need to solve this issue. The views of daily passengers, entrepreneurs, social workers, lawyers and doctors have been brought to light. We surely have a big problem and it cannot be solved in a day, but with consistent hardwork and the right solutions, it is definitely possible to bring an end to it. Suggestions include: Increased Frequency of trains, better platforms, higher awareness, securing unmanned crossings, more footover bridges, better medical aid at stations and alternate modes of transport using the sea.
The film has been narrated by Piyush Mishra and is a joint initiative by What Works and Culture Machine.
In case we have missed out on other solutions, what else do you suggest can be done?" comment now.

think of all the polution we'd create if we do start using sea way. People of India are not educated enough to prevent them from polluting the water by throwing garbage into the water. so I think we need to create a solution for removing the waste from the water before we start adding in more waste.

I have being travelling from last 6 years from Virar for my colg .And I don't think anyone has shot such a beautiful video with perfect research about the issue !
Being a train traveller myself ,I can relate to every issue mentioned in the video 🤘
Some of my solutions would be
    1) To start more short distance trains every 15 mins
    For example Virar Borivali
    Virar andheri
    Bhyandar -andheri etc
    2) To perfectly implement the medical emergency on Every station in Mumbai :)
    3) A separate train coach for students would be perfect and less hassle for students ( A way to implement would be concession pass issued by colgs for students ! )
    4) sea transport idea also sounds perfect and would reduce crowds at stations !
    Hope this helps 🤘

And its really horrible death from our point of view everybody should be sensitive about there life the life should be not taken for granted.what will happen if u late u might reach home late or office, you get less sleep or you have to listen from your boss some harsh word but is it worth to risk your life daily in order to be in your watchlist.

Instead of setting emergency services in train station, government should construct more flyovers bridges and also punish those who crosses the railway tracks. And another very important thing is to build the train 🚂 with doors and set rules that the doors should be closed before train 🚂 start moving.

The fact that ten people die each day in train accidents in Mumbai alone is the most terrifying thing i heard today when we are talking of people killed in terrorist attack or soldiers killed at border we forget about this one thing that is much more dangerous, it's a cancer to our beloved Mumbai, not that it is a problem too hard to solve its just a matter of ignorance that has made things worse to this extent, let us pledge together to take care of ourselves! (is that too hard to do), lack of overbridges is a genuine problem we face that needs to be solved desperately but risking your life to reach your destination early is not you expect from a individual BETTER LATE THAN DIE

this is Mumbai ❤ this video literally gave me goosebumps! I travel a lot by the locals and the metros but yes I think waterways should be there from Navi Mumbai to Mumbai also from Thane. It will reduce the burden of the overcrowded local trains.

instead of that they're building a monument that is not necessary at all given that all the forts which were built by the great shivaji himself are in miserable condition. The statue is nothing but a vote machine, nothing else.

Government should develop other cities. So the migration from other parts stops. I am from rural part of Maharashtra. Had there been development I would not have come to Mumbai.
Where I live the cities nearby don't have proper infrastructure, no big companies. The economy runs on government jobs, farming and shops. It doesn't matter how much we try to develop Mumbai these developments will also be insufficient to cater to the needs of people.
(I am not a pessimistic. I really feel that some of the solutions mentioned in the video and suggested by the people in comments should be implemented but that is not a long term solution.)

superb video, clean and crisp without going overboard.sea travel as suggested should definitely be implemented, but last mile transport via mini buses or bicycles should be implemented. Also people thinking about moving to Mumbai should think twice and look at other options, seriously why go and congest the place further !!

Completely agree with Mr.Jondhale. Water Transport is the need of the hour in this densely populated Metro. I'm really surprised that there is a possibility of Thane-gate way of India waterway route and equally surprised why isn't there in place. I'm pretty damn sure people will switch to waterway mode of transport if there is a infrastructure is in place even at minimal level.

    1) Double Decker trains with longer wheelbase. It might increase carrying capacity.
    2) Construction of Metro Lines parallel to that of existing Railway route.
    3) BEST's current fleet is around 4000, so they shud replace all of that with modern ultra low floor ones and increase no. to 7000-8000 buses with high speed Wi-Fi which should be charged separately. For wifi BEST should tie up with local and network service providers and they service providers should be allowed for advertisement on 20% of the all the bus stop. Revenues of BEST will get increased dramatically. We need good, world class bus transport, just like those in sister city of London. Increase in fleet will result more frequency and which will result into higher passenger footfall. It will be Win Win situation for both Passengers as well as the transport body.
    4) In our country jumping signals is the most Common thing. Violation of law to be precise. To avoid this, at every traffic signals we need car detecting sensors and it should be placed in such a way that as soon as a vehicle jumps or passes the stop line the sensors get activated and the vehicle gets captured including its registration number. Fines should be collected via electricity bill or vehicle owner's Telecom service provider. Charges should be hefty and steep so that people refrain from violating it. Some amount of the fine should be given to either of power co. Or Telecom operators, as for collab. Steep fines will definitely prevent people from violating. As the road junction will become smart.
