I heard somewhere that this lullaby is also sometimes used as a child's burial song... Which makes Sleep, Little Bird 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000x sadder
Many Scandinavian lullabies are also children's burial songs.

I know a scandinavian (I think) song, the one that Arwen in LOTR had.
I believe it's from 'Secret Garden' and I always felt it had a haunting 'death'-vibe. Despite it being beautiful, I just see death trying to lure the victim into eternal slumber.

Many will have found out but recently it was reported that the account belonging to Devalier was deleted, I can not help but cry more listening to this song
Here's a crude little lesson for this song:
Because this is an ancient song, it has multiple versions. Although I've only found 2 on the internet, there were possibly tens of versions, and possibly changing depending on the family. Many of these have probably been lost and/or left unrecorded. And if I'm correct, this song almost died out and if not for these recordings, they could have been lost, too.
The two you can find on the internet sound fairly different, singing different notes and at different tempos, but I'm almost positive they're in the same key. The lyrics are different, too, coming with two different meanings.
The version you are currently listening to or just listened to can either be interpreted as just a simple lullaby about how mommy's tired and she's bringing you all these things to get you to sleep. Cute. Or, most famously, it's a child burial song.
The other version that you can find it by tapping on the one with the lady playing the instrument in the thumbnail, is about sleeping (obviously) and picking fruit before it ripens. Quite different.
I live in Denmark and my Finnish friend Veera taught me this, I sing it to my little sister
Some of these comments are just so wholesome.. ;w;
*[Crying in Finnish]*
GEORGE DEVALIER DID AWESOME AND HORRIBLE THINGS TO MY HEART
George devalier really fked with our emotions huh
This is just wonderful. I love the picture, and the fact that the further into the song she goes, she sounds sadder and sadder. Also, in the humming part, I love how you put the Valhalla quotes in. Simply beautiful ;~;

Kovis MSP Oh sorry >
omg 'sleep, little bird' made me cry so hard
Me too..
I also came here from a fanfic, but not the same as the one everyone else came from.
Mine had a finish character and I just wanted to know if Finland had any good lullaby's, so I searched up 'Finnish lullaby' and found this song.
After finding out some of the backstory, I really grew to enjoy the history of this song.
I have no regrets about this decision.
Which character was it
AW teit Hetalia version tästä! Ihana :,3
I shouldn't have listened to this while reading.... I'm now typing through my tears.
I'm crying, the song, the fic.
This video is amazing, everytime I'm bored i love to sing this and my family can't understand me because we speak spanish :")
I sang this to my cat. Yep.
***** I'll admit that if I tried singing this to somebody who speaks Finnish, they'd either laugh at me or put me in an asylum
I have sang it too my sister. She hates it. "I hate it cuz I don't know what the words mean" she said while she continued writing her stories.

Sorry this comes like 84 years late but I wanted to give some backstory to this lullaby, which, in my opinion, makes it even sadder if you've read the fic this hetalia video is based on.
So basically this lullaby is pretty much ancient, it has travelled through centuries with few other lullabies from mouth to mouth and the words and melody have changed somewhat depending on the region etc but the beginning is always the same :) the lullaby was used at first in burials of children to make the spirits of the children unafraid to follow the birds that take souls to the other side to a happy place, later the songs became a lullaby to put children to sleep normally but you can still hear the traces of melancholy and the references to birds in the song. My grandma used to sing this to me when I was a kid and she told me stories of the origin though the words were a bit different when she sung 😊 hope u found this interesting!
Ihana... :')
:)

Toni Faulkner: It’s used in the Hetalia fanfiction ‘Sleep Little Bird’ by George De Valier but is originally a Finnish lullaby passed down by past generations

I usually don’t cry when I read sad stories but I just sat there, depressed for a good ten minutes, before putting this song on repeat and drawing Finland. I’m the inside I was sobbing
