    Check out my reaction to Bojack Horseman: • DOCTOR REACTS TO BOJAC...
    It's a Sin reviews: • DOCTOR REACTS TO IT'S ...
    This Doctor Reacts video is me, as a psychiatrist, analyzing another episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I'm watching Dennis Reynolds: Making a Murderer (season 12 episode 5) and asking the question of whether Dennis could really be a psychopath? is he charming? Is his narcissistic? As well as other topics like syphilis and the brain, LGBTQ+ mental health, homophobia and more.
    Let me know what you think!

    Glenn Howerton confirmed that Dennis isn't a born sociopath and that he DOES feel emotions; but he suppresses them because he can't handle them, making him act emotionless and cold but have outbursts over seemingly random things.

    There are episodes where Dennis does display having feelings. He seems to go from either being very emotional, to having no emotions at all. He also seems to fluctuate between distancing himself from the rest of the gang/despising them to being very needy and co-dependent with them. I think the biggest factor in his current state and his hyper-sexuality is when he was raped as a 14 year old by his school librarian.

    I agree that they didn't spend enough time talking about the victims during Dahmer. My best friend is related to one of his victims, and the only time they mentioned him in the show was them referencing him by his ethnicity. They couldn't even say his name...

    • @a3gill
      @a3gill ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I felt like it's about the story you want to tell. I remember seeing a docuseries that was entirely about Bundy's victims. A story can't do all things. I suggest someone write one focused on Dahmer's victims. Judging from the commentary I've seen, there's an interest for it.

    • @NovusIgnis
      @NovusIgnis ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I mean, can you blame them? It's literally called Dahmer, not Victim #4. People aren't watching documentaries about the victims, they're seeking out the perpetrators of evil. You only have yourself to blame for supporting these shows.

    The scene with Charlie is actually inspired (or I expect it's inspired) by Brendan Dassey from the Netflix Making a Murderer, where the police interrogators used similar leading tactics to illicit a confession. He was clearly mentally stunted and highly suggestible. I won't speak on whether Steven Avery was guilty (I have my suspicions) but it blows my mind that Brendan was not at least deemed unfit to stand trial, regardless of his guilt or innocence.

  • @roadrollerdio565

    The thing to remember in this episode is that it's also a very _specific_ portrayal of Dennis as filtered by Mac and Charlie to fit the true crime narrative. He's quite different in other episodes and often expresses very strong emotions and mood swings! Anyone who's watched Sunny more than in passing can tell that he's not a psychopath.

    This was great!! I have a passion for pharmacology and it’s really disheartening how many medical professionals lack technical knowledge about the pharmacodynamics of the drugs they deal with on a day-to-day basis. Really refreshing to see someone who knows their stuff and doesn’t have purely cursory knowledge because they took a pre-req course several decades ago.
    Loving the Always Sunny episodes, especially. Again, great work and very entertaining!

    Humans love solving puzzles even if they don't realize it's a puzzle. Anything that's missing or broken or without, we have a desire to fix or complete it. It's how our minds evolved and how we became the dominant species. It's no wonder we like true crime .. or hoarding shows, or any of those bizarre lifestyle shows; we are fascinated by utterly broken people and how they came to be.

    Hey, I think I might be a psychopath. Every time I've ever brought it up to a therapist, they say that, "a psychopath wouldn't worry about being a psychopath," and then they talk about that triad you mentioned, but it always struck me as sophistry. That's my question. Is that true? Would a psychopath worry about being a psychopath? I'm extremely skeptical of American medicine, and I generally thought my therapists saw the human mind as they wished to (i.e. characteristic American optimism and individualism) and didn't account for their own cultural biases. And so I think they are largely unable to really help people, because they don't accurately assess peoples' needs. And even well-intentioned people can be biased by a culture of profit, especially when it becomes a part of their training. So I have trouble getting help here.

I saw a very old school psychiatrist because I was experiencing paranoid thoughts and once he saw I was bisexual he started making a lot of assumptions. Assuming I was “promiscuous”, sleeping with my best friend and that my paranoid thoughts came from excessive porn consumption which wasn’t the case for me. This guys lips are severely irritated and his forehead is rashed. Which leads me to believe excessive crack use has burned his lips and the resulting 'high' and mania caused him to obsessively scratch his forehead until it bled. 🧐🤔

I know Glenn (Dennis) in particular is certainly pro-trans. :) The only thing now is, in the current climate, they're having to be quite blatantly satirical. I dont think a lot of people are transphobic, I think people are tired of the same message being stuffed down their throats continuously through media. Its nothing against them but the people who are bad at relaying the message I guess which is often ham fisted into our lives.

    I love how you portray Maureen identifying as a cat to be some right wing strawman as though this isn't literally happening. You can find videos across social media confirming this.
    Also, on your channel you might support queer views, but in reality we support truth and getting people help. We don't support telling people that their delusions are correct and that their flawed perception of reality is real. The furniture doesn't talk to schizophrenics, a person with bulimia throwing up isn't justified, and men cannot be women. All of these mental illnesses are the result of people seeing reality different than what it is, and the solution is to reject what they think they see and force them to see what really is.

      better yet, they are their own category. i'm gay but i think some queer people take things too far when they want to eliminate the difference between transwomen and women which means they aren't allowed to penis-free safe spaces or it's cool if a man who is ranked like 20th in a sport can transition and suddenly break records for first place leaving women in the dust who've trained for that their whole life. transwomen are transwomen. and sex-wise biological males. i don't see how that isn't a fair compromise

      We can obviously not compromise about the meaning of words. If you personally prioritize conflict avoidance over truth, then go ahead. But it obviously doesn't work societally to change the meaning of words because we don't want to upset someone.

      ehhh disagree, there's actually WAY too much criminal sympathy in the US currently, many DAs in big cities are letting felony repeat offenders out onto the street over and over creating more victims each time. It's like an epidemic rn and it always leads to some of the worst crimes and bodycam footage you'll see (ik because i'm constantly seeing it for my job). People think this way only because they've never been a victim of these crimes firsthand or have never seen it firsthand, if you see enough victims, you'd probably change your mind.
