Same, I knew something good was coming after that but I couldn't remember what.
I always thought of that as a good representation of Americans during the pandemic. (I’m in the United States, so I can only speak for here.)
I'm convinced that Charlie would be immune to most diseases, even if they weren't suffering from flu.
Of course he'd be immune, his mom vaccinated All the time when he was a kid
Birds carry diseases. Charlie is of bird law; therefore he cannot catch the flu since he can easily come to an agreement with the bird for him not to catch the flu
As a 10 month sober recovering alcoholic, I found it really refreshing how on point the information about alcohol dependence and alcohol withdrawal was. Over the years I've suffered 6 grand mal seizures from unplanned alcohol withdrawal, and getting proper treatment in UK hospitals can be incredibly difficult. But it's nice to know that awareness and knowledge of these conditions and their appropriate treatment methods is increasing. Thanks for the great video!

Marijuana really helped me with my alcohol withdrawals. The crazy thing is that after that one episode, I never had alcohol withdrawals again. Still very scary and I never want to feel that way again, with some tapering and marijuana when I couldn't drink it really helped me
be careful it takes a long time. but i got hooked on pot. it takes using daily for years. but i managed it and it wasnt fun.

This was great I learned a bunch of new things about alcohol withdrawal and I worked in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinic as a sober up unit worker where it was an alternative to cells for public intoxication and our main job was to look for signs of alcohol withdrawal and write down what's happened every 15 minutes, we would give them food, drinks and a bed, conversation if they needed it and look for signs of them wanting to seek help because most of the time it was people who had addiction to alcohol. People would often present with 0.35 blood alcohol volume and at one point 0.4 which we immediately called an ambulance to take them to the hospital, it was very rewarding work and a few people I worked with managed to reorganise parts of their lives!

Thank you so much about being knowledgeable about DTs and how dangerous it is. I once spent day 3 feeling okay physically FINALLY but the voices started then. By day five I peaked and spent the next 38 hours in 12BCE Scotland being hunted by a rogue clan and their hunting dogs. I got arrested on day six for wandering into someone's home looking for a magic spider I was tasked with finding. No one in the court room knew anything about Delirium Tremendous and they convicted me of burglary and sentenced me and I had to do a year in jail. And I was lucky that's all that happened.
Really love the analysis on this episode, and correction of what alcohol withdrawal looks like. Have unfortunately had way too many patients try to fight me while admitted lol
As someone who has been through it multiple times and tried to explain alcohol withdrawal to others I really want to commend you on your knowledge about it. You even mentioned tapering, while not preferable it's a lot of people's only option. I've been in a lot of ER's that seemed happy to charge me hundreds for a banana bag and wonder why I'm showing up two days later unable to keep down water with a tongue chewed to bits.
People in power would rather pay more for short term solutions than pay less for long term solutions sigh. And then a lot of people feel or act the same way when it comes to planning. (Not referring to many people who HAVE to plan short rather than long term because they just don’t have the resources. Referring more to when it comes to voting on taxes or planning a construction project etc.)
One time in rehab I met a nasa engineer who was trying to kick a severe alcohol problem and he was having those tremors you mentioned. He could hardly speak and was constantly shaking.
So I know this isn't really mental health related but I personally would love Mac finds his pride cause it is a beautiful episode

Interesting how you brought up entering alcohol withdrawal while in the hospital being treated for something else. My Uncle was in the hospital for weeks and had severe alcohol withdrawals that soon became a bigger concern for the Doctors treating him. But eventually the Withdrawal symptoms actually ended, because he was there so long. The doctors encouraged him to stop drinking since he had already made it through the difficult part. But of course the first thing he did after leaving the hospital was go straight to the bar.
Did they treat the alcohol withdrawal symptoms or did they just end? Either way, makes sense your uncle relapsed considering “encouragement” isn’t necessarily effective when it comes to replacing a physical dependency. At least for me. And physically, it just isn’t. Obviously encouragement can help, if done right heh. But it’s not nearly enough IMO. Especially if he was in the hospital so long for other problems. Seems like it would be a really unpleasant situation even if necessary.
I love breaking down the Its Always Sunny characters and so agree with you that Dennis is the most disturbed and disturbing. Could you review the theory that Dennis is a serial killer? There are several episodes that drop clues that he is and Brett Lefuer (I think that's how you spell it) was his first victim. It's will and you would like it
I feel sweet dee is just as bad... Remember she lit her collage roommate on FIRE.. she also shows the same tics as Dennis when she gets angry..

OMG! 😂😂 I loved this reaction. It's Always Sunny is one of my all-time favorite shows. This sounds incredibly selfish, but it's comforting to see that we all deal with many of the same issues. That especially goes for this current pandemic. It's also good to see a mental health professional finding comedy as a release valve. 👍🇬🇧💙🇺🇲☣️⚕️.

@@jonahs92 Yes, we do actually. A consultation is usually formal, like a consultation with a doctor, or other professional setting. Exalted isn’t common, but it’s one of those words where people know what it means.
@@lefinlay Read what I wrote. Obviously, we talk about consultations and exaltation like we talk about disorientation. But how do you pronounce the verb forms? How do you write them? Do you add an -ate to the end, like y'all inexplicably do to disorient?

As a verb, a consultation would be “to consult”, but exaltation isn’t a verb per se, more a state of emotion.
Our words are very irregular so they don’t all conjugate the same way.
Yes, this is something I learned as a person on antidepressants and anxiety medications, if you try to stop taking them or switch kinds: Never EVER EVER quit cold turkey. It can cause some of the scariest feelings in your life.

Haha I remember when I first saw this episode I thought that the fact that they had magically all gotten better after drinking just proved that this was some kind of dream life, or just in their imagination type of deal, and that they were suddenly going to take some kind of fantasy take on the show (well I that was really more of just my own imagination being set free, but still could have been interesting?)

Someone I worked with who was a bad alcoholic that I knew well (and had the entire medical history of, including his reaction to valium), would always do a random month of sobriety to "prove" he wasn't an alcoholic. He was so miserable to everyone, he would shake, he would feel awful, ect, and then hypothetically, allegedly, in a video game a "friend i totally don't know who happened to have a low dose of valium" would end up giving him one pill a day when things got bad, only when supervised, so he wouldn't end up dying. He never understood how dangerous what he was doing was.... and he never took a day off or had a doctor watch him. He drank so much that the nearby bar ordered an extra keg of his favorite beer every month, probably more often. I just know he had to tell them when his sober month was so they could adjust their order. Which is insane. The thing the thought would help him with his withdrawal was the smoothies his gf pushed on him. And as a chef he was in intense heat and standing all day.
As a certified and registered peer recovery specialist in the US, I was sorry to hear that the sud treatment and mental health treatment beds are mostly private in the Uk. Does this mean that they are expensive, or can someone with little financial resources there still get treatment?
Also, being in this field means that I do have my own opinion of those benzos that you were talking about-but I think that I am coming from a different point of view. I understand their value in treating alcohol withdrawal, I just also feel like there are so many times when the rx takes the place of learning some good and healthy coping skills. I may get railed for this comment, but I have seen so many people who have taken long term prescriptions and it is even harder to stop at that point. I know that I have a resentment against my former provider for giving me those for so long since coming off of them meant that I was wholly unprepared for any emotional turmoil.
Being a peer means that I too am in recovery (just for anyone who doesn't know that term), and love watching these episodes of It's Always Sunny (and really almost everything else on your channel which is why I have subscribed).
As someone who genuinely has an alcohol dependency, this was fascinating! I've quit a few times before and can confirm that with long term alcohol dependency you really can get flu like symptoms.
For anyone curious, I've cut down to a third of what I was drinking and spend a week a month alcohol free. It's slow progress, but with twenty years of drinking, it isn't advisable to just stop.
Thanks for taking a moment and validating Frank's advice on alcohol lowering your immune system. Even tho I've seen this episode multiple times, his comment never stuck with me. I just assumed it was another Frank non-sequitur.

Great stuff! Insightful. I don't know if it's been recommended to you, and it would be a steep shift from Sunny. But have you ever watched Hannibal the TV series? It explores the relationship between FBI agent Will Graham and Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Several elements of the series showcase Lecter as a psychiatrist.
Now I’m not a doctor by any means, but at 11:10, you mentioned that seizures make you unconscious, which is not always the case. When I was 12, I was suffering from focal seizures, which means I was totally conscious for each one. This is because the effected area barely touched my frontal lobe, but mostly affected the parietal and temporal lobes. The only way my frontal lobe was affected by a change in my speech patterns. I didn’t have a stutter before my epilepsy, but I developed one afterwards.

I'm surprised the saying "Hold on, I'll bite." hasn't popularized with fans over the years. It's said in almost every episode.
Small point of clarification: Not all seizures cause a lack of consciousness. Even though I rarely have the full blown Grand Mal(Tonic-Clonic) ones, I do still have the occasional aura, which I believe is classified as a form of mild seizure.
Epileptic since birth, still waiting on a reason why lol. I'm pretty sure neurologist understand the brain about as well as astrophysicist understand the big bang.
Thank you for this great and informative video! I stopped drinking abruptly and ended up having a seizure a few years ago. I recently relapsed after getting laid off and now am trying very hard to taper and it is scary. So far I have only had a bit of shaky hands and am measuring and drinking less every day. Hopefully I can get sober again in a week or so.

Hey Elliot, one thing about the "psychosis" regarding alcohol withdrawal on day 3-4. I know you have more medical experience than me so I'm not claiming this as fact, but it makes more sense to me that the symptoms of psychosis are more from withdrawal symptoms AND not sleeping for days.
Some of the symptoms you mentioned mimic that of simply not sleeping for days, such as when amphetamine abusers go on benders and develop some symptoms you mentioned because of their bender.
Never let it be said Danny doesn't commit to his craft. This is piss myself laughing funny.
Moral of the story, don't stop drinking.
I can imagine once lockdown is over, a lot of people are going to start going into withdrawal...

Sorry if im too late and you've already done it but Trailer Park Boys' characters Julian and Lahey have some interesting alcohol dependencies that would be cool to see a therapists take on, the only problem is they take course over the entire series lol but its a funny show otherwise, also Ricky is dependent on marijuana and Bubbles is dependent on cats, that entire show might be therapy gold now that I think about it.

Fear of benzos is not an irrational thing, from personal experience giving someone recovering from an addictive substance another very addictive substance is a recipe for disaster.
It’s possible Mac wasn’t getting withdrawal symptoms before he was quarantined in the bathroom because he was drinking alcohol he hid in the bar

talking about quarantine, maybe you could comment something about Utopia (the uk version obviously). the characters are very complex and are exposed to very fucked up situations

L-theanine works wonders for alcohol withdrawal. One or two caps during the day, depending on anxiety levels, one less shot of alcohol per day in the evening taken one hour later each day, documented. I used this method and barely felt any discomfort, after before having intense nightmares, auditory hallucinations, and one seizure. This is not medical advice, please do your own research

Hi. Not disregarding it at all as benzo addiction is awful for so many. It was more about pointing out that in the co text of alcohol withdrawal in hospital they can be life saving. It's all about the context for that individual. Sorry if that wasnt clear enough on the vid
@@DoctorElliottCarthy I was actually curious about your comment on benzos as I struggled with recreational abuse of them in my late teens. I remember coming across information online (and 10 years dated) that benzos are prescribed in such a limited fashion due to potential for abuse and dependency. Was your statement in the video moreso related to them being relatively safe in controlled environments during cases of alcohol withdrawal recovery in comparison to alcohol itself, or are benzos demonized in the medical world without proper grounds? I really love the content you put out and don't think your comment was necessarily harmful, it just lacked context for your point of view on a type of medication that has seen its fair share of unintended abuse by average folks.
@@screeechbud exactly. They have a medical place. They can also be really harmful outside of this. The point was for doctors not to undertreat alcohol withdrawal with benzodiazepines because they're worried they'll make the person addicted to benzo's.
@@DoctorElliottCarthyI didn't realize how contentious the initial comment on them was until I continued scrolling and saw how much more interaction you had gotten over the subject. I definitely agree with not hesitating over their use in situations like the one you are laying out. As another comment down the way said though, I find my experience in Canada to be different than your described one in the UK and that benzos like Lorazepam are prescribed long term in cases of general anxiety.

I know this is an older video of yours, Elliott, but I was wondering something. I'm a poly drug addict and my family on my mom's side has plenty of alcoholics. Now alcohol is pretty much the one common drug I'm fine with never consuming but I'm curious if addictions from a drug are still heritable for all drugs or just that specific one (in this example, alcohol).
I'm not an expert, but to the best of my understanding the inheritable bit is the trauma which leads people to use alcohol and drugs, along with a tendency towards addiction in general, so like you might come from a family of addicts and not drink or do drugs but be unable to quit smoking, or have a shopping problem or food addiction etc.
Odds Charlie could rinse those chemical bottles enough to be safe to drink out of?
I've never watched this show, it's almost older than I am, but it seems like I should check it out. I'm confused about alcohol withdrawal tho': I drink a lot, especially in proportion to my size, but occasionally I go on a diet or a fast to get down to slightly underweight when I book something, and those entail quitting any alcoholic beverages. I never experienced any symptoms related to that.
What if you're treating someone who's an alcoholic and they then get addicted to benzos? Is that something that could happen

You said it was ridiculous that people are afraid of benzos. But aren't benzos very dangerous in the long term if not carefully monitored by a medical professional? I myself had a bad experience with benzo withdrawal even though my treatment WAS monitored. It was for GAD and the benzos were never meant to be long term.

Id be very interested to see what the numbers are like amongst biological children of alcholics adopted by non alchoholic parents. Because is it genetic or is it still the environmental factors of your upbringing- exposure to substance dependancy throughout childhood.

I’m quietly enraged by people who didn’t wear their masks properly. Especially because I make sure my mask covers my nose and my mouth when I go out to work because I do people’s grocery shopping and I pick up people’s take out(take away for people in the uk) and delivery them. I saw work as a means to avoid sitting home and moping
benzos work wonders for opioid withdrawal also. but benzo withdrawal isnt fun either. it can b deadly as well. but a dr said alcohol was worse. believe it or not pot withdrawal is quite bad considering most dont know u can be physically addicted to it. its closer to mind like withdrawals like benzos more than like pain killers.
Saying pot gives you withdrawals is like saying not taking insulin gives you withdrawals. It's medicine stop spreading bullshit information
I promise u pot has withdrawals. Drs confirmed 15% of opiate addicts get addicted to pot. So dont believe it but ur wrong.
I watched all 3 of the sunny videos. Good stuff. I did sub but I didn't like because I didn't wanna mess up the 311 likes. 311 is a great band and very therapeutic lol. Hope you do more of these. I've seen all the sunny eps a gazillion times over so hope you do more. Good stuff.

I wouldn't call it ridiculous to be afraid of benzos, they're probably more addicting than alcohol in a non medical setting and the addiction usually hits harder and faster.
Edit: I've seen your other replies now and yes you did mean in a medical setting as an immediate treatment for withdrawal. Good thing because I thought it was insane of you to say something like that
Uh it's ridiculous to be scared of Benzos? When I was in rehab the benzo addicts outnumbered the alcoholics and they had to be in treatment for a month before they could start being interacting with groups or feeling somewhat normal, as opposed to heroin and alcoholics who were expected to be out and about within 3 days of treatment going to groups and stuff. Benzos can be just as deadly to withdrawal from as alcohol it just takes a lot longer
I was talking about doctors treating alcohol withdrawal where benzo's are lifesaving and undertreating the withdrawal can be life threatening. You're right that long term use is very addictive and the subsequent withdrawal from benzo's is arguably just as life threatening as alcohol withdrawal can be. It's all about context.
