So glad to see you reacting to this beautiful episode. Rob Mcelhenney wanted to make a poignant episode for Mac because Rob’s Mom is gay & he grew up with two moms & a dad. His dad was very understanding when his mom came out many years ago. Props to Rob for training for months to do this dance.

earlier in the episode Mac says that the woman represented God and the dance is his struggle with his faith and sexuality clashing. That’s why we see him initially accepting her, but eventually pushing her away in shame the more he realizes he’s gay. He spins her and tosses her away from himself acting as if he doesn’t need her. But then he looks at her knowing she’ll return to him regardless. Then she sprints towards him full force and leaps into his arms with her entire body slamming into him, knowing he will catch her. He then realizes she loves him regardless of his sexuality. He then lifts her over his head showing his complete trust and faith in her. He then puts her down and falls into her loving and caring arms while she reassures him “It’s ok,It’s ok” because even if his own father can’t accept him, she’ll never leave his side and she’ll be there when he needs a shoulder to cry on. I’m not even the religious type and still found this very powerful and beautiful

🥲 Yeah. I'm an atheist and I cried LIKE A BITCH (as Mac might've called me once) when I first saw this episode. I kind of envy the upside of having religious faith. That sense of omni-present emotional support, that light of hope in the darkness, self-worth/self-esteem... Whatever you want to call it, I wish I had more of. I'm glad Mac found his.

      @pieperbe ปีที่แล้ว +15

Absolutely. Every viewer - straight, gay, parent, friend, ally, closed off non-ally, or whatever - can connect with someone in this narrative. They have truly written all of us into this episode and made clear that whichever character you are, the *possibility* of growth is always there (even though some will refuse to experience it). And in doing so, it implicitly explores the definition of family, as Frank makes a leap that Mac’s biological father did not. The way that sadness and disappointment are simultaneously interwoven with hope and love without minimizing either set of emotions is poignant and gripping. Remarkable episode.

as a straight man, this episode is the only one that i skip. An i love musicals, just not interpertive dance. Same reason why i skip the first 4 min of kany's runaway song. trying to figure out the hidden meaning of a song or dance or act that has already been predetirmined and is only truly known to the creator, i find it frustrating. It would be nice if the dance or routines themselves had titles like or hinting headings like book chapters or song names.
      (A Battle Betwixt)
*dancing dude does routine where he switches between a male a female partner.*
That i would understand, but for all i know that dance was just him telling the world he really likes balle
on an off note, one of my favorite things about mac is his unwaivering faith. My fav quote of his lol
"First of all, all things are possible through our lord jesus christ, so jot that down in your little book." LMFAO
i started using that as an excuse to explain my antics.

Regarding the bit with Frank (“I get it,” then leading the applause) after Mac’s display, I think it did a lot to symbolize that while Mac’s own father may have left and not been accepting, Frank is just as much (arguably more) of a father to Mac. Frank has made an effort to understand Mac and make him comfortable being who he is, even when Mac’s own father walked out on him. It says a lot about their own relationship. This whole episode was a beautiful work of art.
I think this is truly a contender for one of the most beautiful moments in television history.

The first time I saw the dance performance, I sobbed and couldn't explain to myself why. This is the first time I've seen it without the music and it is still just as powerful, which means that the music is not the driving factor. I think a lot of what drives the feelings home is our experience as an audience, from watching someone so reserved and emotionless struggle throughout the episode and then suddenly turn into a maelstrom of emotion and grace before our eyes. We actually want to understand, even if we don't. That is, to me anyway, all I've ever wanted from anyone in my life.

This was very hard for me to watch as someone who is very low contact with narcissistic and abusive parents (and what contact I do have is entirely superficial).
As a former dancer, it seems to me that the first part is both showing his self image as alone and in pain (the backdrop is dark and thundering, a storm) and that the moves are somewhat romantically coded. He also rejects the partner over and over, whether she represents heteronormativity or his true self, or even God’s love. It’s interesting that there a part built into the dance for Mac to connect with his father and that he was emotionally devastated by the rejection enough to stop in the middle of the performance.
But when his partner accepts him, the tone of the dance changes when she offers him the chance to continue despite the rejection. Its more of a dance and there’s more mutuality in the moves. It’s also in the second part that he’s able to perform the lift, a very impressive move. And the dance ends with him resting on his partner (similar to the pieta) while she tells him it’s okay before the angelic choir and light beam down. I think she clearly represents god here and his struggle to be accepted as he is by this very important figure to Mac.
Besides the choreography, I think this scene shows how important authenticity and acceptance are to our maturity and development. This is one of the few times Mac is truly successful at something, really works at it, and bares his soul in the show. And thankfully, Frank is there to witness it and give him a small amount of comfort and healing in light of the rejection he experienced during this performance.
I’ve never had this moment with my parents and doubt I ever will but I was so happy to see Mac get to. I cry every time watching it because it is so powerful for those of us who are vulnerable and have difficulty letting down our walls.
Thank you for you thoughtful commentary and always being so warm and welcoming and honest. 💙

I've been binge-watching this show for the last couple weeks (never saw it before now), so the content of the show and the history of the characters was fresh in my mind by the time I got to this particular episode. I watched it last night, and I was absolutely crushed by it--sobbing and leaning forward on the couch as I drank in this completely unexpected flash of artistic beauty and heartfelt emotion.
Prior to Mac's performance at the end, the episode sets up the basis behind it. When trying to explain to other people about his homosexuality, Mac describes dancing with a woman, who he describes as being God. To me, the portrayal of God as a female is the most important aspect of the entire performance. Mac's performance is best appreciated by understanding what it means to HIM, not necessarily what it means to the viewer. In other words, to tap into the meaning of the dance you have to understand what it means to Mac. In this way we can connect with Mac and THEN find what it means to us, as we identify with Mac.
Mac is a staunch Catholic, and as such he is at war with himself because of his understanding of the apparent incompatibility between his religious beliefs and his sexual orientation. He even mentions that fact. The implication here is that Mac possibly wonders what God thinks of him being a homosexual. Does God still love him unconditionally, or does God judge him and reject him?
The image of a male God who is angry and judgmental toward homosexuals is a very prevalent one. Yet Mac's version of God is a female--and a supportive God at that. Mac has a vision of God that loves him unconditionally, accepts him for who he is, and comforts him when he is hurt.
This is the God that Mac dances with.
Mac integrates his two warring sides--his homosexuality and his belief in God--into a cohesive whole, where the two sides are no longer opposed, but complement each other beautifully. Mac's performance shows us the version of God that we all crave deep down in the most protected and secret parts of our hearts--a God that loves us sincerely, without judgment, and with the full capability to protect our hearts and hold us in a loving embrace.
Here we have the importance behind having a female portraying God, with the loving and nurturing aspects of God on full display. Catholicism portrays God as a male, while giving all of the feminine aspects of deity to Mother Mary. In a sense, Mac is elevating the feminine and nurturing aspects of Mother Mary--who was a mere human--and bringing them up to the level of God. Mac is essentially integrating God and Mother Mary into a single deity, one that loves Mac completely and dances with him in perfect choreographed movements of the heart.
The fact that this performance came from a show like It's Always Sunny--which I'm sure we can all agree is unapologetically crude and its characters absolute moral degenerates (which is what makes it so hilarious)--makes Mac's dance all the more powerful and impactful. I was left speechless and breathless by its completion, my heart filled with love and hope. After 13 seasons, this is by far my absolute favorite episode, and I expect it will continue to be so as I continue binge-watching.

Danny DeVito deserved an Emmy for this episode. As amazing as the dance is, and it is, what really strikes me every time I watch it is Frank. Every time they cut to him, you can see what Frank is thinking, right in his face. When Mac's dad gets up and walks out, the concern on Frank's face, his reaction to the dance, and his understanding at the end when he "gets it." The Danny provided a master class in non-verbal acting in this episode, and when you saw him on screen, you didn't see Danny DeVito, you saw Frank Reynolds, callous, crass, sexist, disgusting Frank Reynolds, experiencing a personal epiphany. Even if Mac didn't reach anyone else, he reached Frank. They referenced it in another episode in one of the following seasons. Frank said something like, "I get the gay thing now. Mac did his dance, and I get it.

I felt what he was interpreting in that dance. I teared up. My cousin is now one of the bravest people I've known in my life because he didn't fight it. We used to pick on him just as much as the bullies when we were kids. As teens we didn't even know ourselves, but we all knew who he was. He didn't carry it like a flag, he just never ran from who he was. He dealt with a lot and became more stoic. I remember trying to apologize to him as an adult and he stopped me. I guess he was protecting me from my own shame after I matured. He really is a good dude. I still can't help but think about how lonely he must have felt around us back then.

As a linguist, music teacher, and former dancer, I generally fluctuate between being able to express myself between all three, so I very much appreciate your emphasis on other forms of expression, such as artistic therapies. It helps me remember that there is so much more to learn! As (also) a bi-sexual woman and huge Sunny fan, it helps to hear your contributions!

This, without a doubt, always makes me cry. I literally dont know why. I mean, i cry at everything emotional, but normally i can put it into words.
I think the personal growth from the characters definitely helps, but just the pure emotion just coming from Mac, and that needing to be held. Its clear from literally all other episodes that he had a family that really didnt care about him but he idolised them. And he is just desperate to have that love and care, he tries so hard in the group to be seen as cool etc, and he wouldve probably had to hide being gay because of his family for so long but just because the group isnt exactly big on feelings etc. But i think he knows they are always there for him. They made fun of him for hiding being gay more than actually being gay, and it feels like that was their only way for them, with their weird dynamic to be like "we actually are safe to come out to" and why they made fun of him for hiding it for so long.
Also religion has to play a huge part for him. I wonder if some of that is in the dance because of the lighting. Looking up to his god and asking is this actually ok for me because i have been made to feel my whole life that it isnt.
I dunno, some ramblings. Lots of thoughts

It reminds me of the first Thanksgiving after I came out last year. My sister had some incredibly hurtful things previously and so before Thanksgiving, I laid out boundaries about what I will and will not tolerate and if the boundary is crossed I will leave the house instead of getting into a fight or discussing it to my parents. My mom said that she didn't get it (like what Frank said) and that even though I chose to identify as ace (I'm not out as nonbinary) that I would have to put that aside and not say anything so I wouldn't ruin Thanksgiving for everyone else. I asked her if she chose to identify as autistic. I can still see her face to this day but it looked like I slapped her. That was her "I get it" moment but it didn't have the resolution the dance scene had. I wish it did.

Pretty much every fan watched the whole end sequence waiting for the other shoe to drop but it never came. Sunny's style almost dictates that after something beautiful like this that it suddenly devolves into chaos or we get a reveal showing the beautiful performance to be in mac's mind (like the gangs HS reunion) but after thirteen years of that the most surprising, subversive, Sunny thing they could do was to buck fan expectations and play it straight.

My nephews gay, and his "coming out" was at Thanksgiving. It was my brother, dad, and myself only and after he said he was gay before we started eating his dads response was "We know, do you want mashed potatoes or scalloped?" which left him crying.
He said he was surprised that we didn't have any reaction. But we all kind of knew after 19 years, and it didn't change anything. We just continued eating and watched football afterwards. Is that a "boring" story or a good one, I don't know, heh.

About salt in wounds, I feel like it helps? Anecdotal evidence, but when I was young and got sick, my mother gave us salt to gargle, (if we had infections in our throats), and honestly, it helped! Additionally, horsefly bites get infected very very easily, cos horseflies are vicious little bastards, but when I go sea swimming in the days after getting a horse fly bite, it tends to go down quicker and doesn't get infected as often. Obvious anecdotal evidence, but at least in my experience, salt is a decent disinfectant in a pinch. Although if your cut is more substantial than insect bites or small scrapes, you probably should disinfect it with actual disinfectant

  • @NWScouser1892

I’m straight but having been a fan of Always Sunny for over a decade and seen Mac’s sexuality or, up to this point, implied sexuality, be used as a joke for years started to wear thin a bit so then we got to this episode where Mac’s demeanour was one of someone who had finally had enough of living a lie and was ready to come out without knowing how to express it, I was waiting for the inevitable turn from Mac whereby he would come out and then immediately renounce it. So when I saw this scene for the first time it blew my mind. Always Sunny can be one of the most insensitive shows to minority and marginalised groups without being outwardly malicious, but when they choose to nail a subject they really do. I think Rob is the perfect cast member for these situations as he would’ve seen the coming out experience of three family members as his mum and both brothers are all gay, so even his knowledge of the culture helped shape certain lines in the show, such as the response to Frank in the club
At the time this episode came out I saw some people saying Always Sunny had jumped the shark but I couldn’t disagree more, it just gave them more scope to deal with sensitive issues and trauma in a way that has humour but depth, like Charlie’s discovery about his family later on. Just a brilliant episode of TV all round and Rob and Danny deserve a lot of credit in how they performed it

A stunningly beautiful episode. I cry every-time, and both the overt and subtle messages are beautifully woven in. But let’s please remember not to ignore the major epidemic of cisgender, straight, white, non-marginalized males such as myself that are ALSO dealing with major isolation and mental health problems on a daily basis (I was a sexual abuse victim as a child from a female family member) It’s become easy (and even disgustingly and callously cool/cruel, especially with culture as it is now) to forget that EVERYONE hurts, and to laugh off the issues of members of the “majority”, despite there being no such thing. We are all human, and we all hurt and have equal hardship…just in different ways. Otherwise, hatred will always persist, and humanity will never be able to understand or relate to each other.
