  • Crayone is one of the most well-respected graffiti writers in the world. His career goes back to the beginning of hip-hop in San Francisco, where he started off as a b-boy. Once he transitioned into graffiti, Crayone pushed himself to become one of the best in the game. He founded the TWS crew (Together With Style) with the mission to bring together writers who could excel at every area of graffiti. This led to a rivalry with TMF, and the two crews had a legendary battle that changed the history of San Francisco graffiti. This interview only covers the beginnings of Crayone's career up until the early 90s, so we'll be having him back on the podcast in the future.

The first time I met Rigel was at Fort Miley in 86-87. I was rolling out a wall and about to throw up one of my wack ass attempts at a piece (I wrote ICY, or Eye See Why) and he was sitting there watching me, giving me tips. This park ranger on a horse rode up and asked me what I was doing. Since I hadn't started painting yet he didn't cite me. Everybody was cracking up. Such is the life of a toy.
In the intervening years I did some pieces here and there. I was more prolific for the couple years (88-89)I lived in LA, but when I moved back I realized that I was much better at DJing than graffiti so I switched. I always got along well with the TMF guys. Deen, Disk and Bizarre would come around my hood sometimes and they were always super cool. Like Rigel said, Dug was the king of the city and always gave me props when I would see him around the way. I was real lucky that somebody plugged me into Berkeley/Oakland so Django (Kaos/Razor) and Mike Dream are people that I consider to be actual friends of mine to this day. Big respect King Razor. RIP to Mike Dream, one of the greatest that ever did it. I also knew Barry Twist One through some other friends of mine unassociated to graffiti. When he hit the city with his running man characters on the construction panels up on Van Ness, that was probably one of the greatest things I've ever seen in graffiti in my entire life. And I've been lucky to see a lot of really great things.
I witnessed many of these events Rigel talks about. I think that Rigel got it right. He was kind of arrogant and rude back in the day, which rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. You can tell that he has matured quite a lot in the intervening years. Big respect to Rigel and TWS.
I heard a couple years back that Dug won a Grammy for best album cover that he made for some musical artist. I guess he's living in New York City doing art for a living, as he should be. Anyways big up to all Bay Hip Hop crew and massive.
And big up to you Dregs, for preserving this history and doing it right. Straight lacing the world with game. And as we all know, game recognize game in the Bay main.

I had the privilege to meet Crayone in my wannabe writer toy days. All i have to say to people is you have no idea how dope this dude is until you actially see one of his pieces in person. The blending, the cleaness, the color selection, the eye candy effect...ok so his letters weren't for everyone but there was no doubt he is a true master. I used to find out about his pieces, take a bus to it and just study for hours

I always tried to go to the grant library in San Jose to see if they had spray can art book avail for check out so I could steal it but it was never in,I remember I’d spend a lot of my weekends at 11th and Taylor in San Jose watching Picasso and dare, pashe, sphinx, raven, nexus,Aladdin, crayola if I remember was a white guy I met he had like a flat top or bald but I also met crayone, all super inspirational to me,man dare was the coolest dude he had gave me his phone number and I was like 10-12 years old but I had loved graf art and I had black books but never learned to do my art on walls,I’d call dare and he would talk to me on the phone encouraging me to get some paint and he would help me out but I never followed through,I watched alot of amazing pieces produced over the years on 11th it was a sad day when they shut that wall down..I always wondered what happened to dare from wcf if any one knows please let me know

Happy to see Crayone is still in the game, in fact after this he is the game. I once witnessed him at BK ask for ketchup and the manager gave him 2 packs and he ask for more. This poor manager acted as if it coming out his pocket. Crayone got like 5 packs and used 2 🤣
