My Dad said something similar when he had had a stroke and suffered from dementia and couldn't do anything for himself. He looked me right in the eyes and said he wants to go hunting. I had to turn away for a moment and then told him that sounds great dad, we will do that. He was so happy to hear those words from me. No, he never went hunting again but I found comfort in him being happy for that moment thinking he would.

Can't stop crying 😭 My brother with terminal cancer also suggested to go fishing once he got better.. that day I spend the day watching fishing videos on TH-cam with him and making a list of everything we would need.. he had hope.. days later he passed away 😔 I learned that no matter the storm we should never abandon the things that make us happy.. Just a thought, I'm a disabled vet with a spinal injury. His heart situation could be caused by his back. If spinal fluid is leaking into his blood. It is a condition called Autonomic Disreflexia. It genarally happens to para/quadrapalegic persons. Like I said just a thought. I'm no doctor and don't claim to be one. I keep going until the paramedics got there and had to lift me up from him so they could work. Even then that hope never left me! I thought after he passed that was the end of me but God had different ideas for me. I have leaned on my faith and hope came back to me in the faces of my kids and grandkids! Hello, Justin and Family.
First of all I would like to say that I usually never comment on videos but I just couldn't hold back with what I have to say.
I'm a young woman from Canada, and I have been watching your videos for a few years now and have followed you and your families adventures time and time again. Every night I look forward to your upload. Not only do I look forward to your videos every night, you and your family have inspired me to cook better, eat better and learn to grow not only my own food but as a person. I have been following this story with you and your dad closely and despite my non religious views i am sending warm hugs and prayers to you and your family. You guys are like my far away family and my heart aches for all of you. I wish all of you good wishes and your father a speedy and okay recovery.

Your never too old to enjoy eating good and doing for yourself. I have help from my daughter and grandson but I garden and can and hope to do until I the day I die. I want to be 87 and still talking about planting sweet potatoes. You go dad.

Sheila Flemming - Same here. I'm 62 as well and my garden grows each year. Doing it all myself amd loving it. My dad was well into his 80s before he passed away, the cancer treatments were what really killed him. He was always on the go, building stuff, taking carr of the yard, etc. My mom is now 92 and still hanging in there, and would go to the gym twice a week. Am going to visit her soon. Glad we have a few videos of my dad, and some talking about the old days. Thankful to have my mom still, for a little whole longer anyway.

I’m a Chemo RN and my mom didn’t have chemo she was stage 4 it wouldn’t have helped. I lost my dad the year before my mom he was only 75 had a massive heart attack had asthma real bad had just had a stress test about two weeks before his heart was good. TH-cam people with the same thing as you. They may be able you give you tips and advice on how to do things anyways! Life is not ment to have an absence of pain. We are to do through the pain. Thats the point and the beauty of life. That we still can and still dream and push regardless of limitations. Get you some indoor pots to plant in. Maybe a rollling chair to get to them all. Dont stop thinking and puzzling out how to do anyways! You may just find something that can help so many others like you!! I hope this dont sound bad I mean it in the most positive best of ways!! Its like the man living up in the mountains who lost his wife because the trail around the mountain was to far to the doctor and she didnt make it. His pain of loosing his wife drove him to dig for 40 years so that the rest of his tribe would not have to suffer the same or feel his pain! Because of his pain he did a great feat and the futur of his tribe im sure was full of so much more positivity because of it! I'm sure many did in his honor and acted with kindness and help because of his pain and then his positive gifts to his tribe. I believe the man died when the path was done also. A couple days after.. The pain in a way gave his life pourpose

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was very ill towards the end, but he still got up every day he was able to and walked his beautiful garden everyday. He didn’t give up. He was full of fight right up to the end. He was a good hard working man.
He’s been gone for 7 years now we miss his wisdom dearly BUT I think he’d be proud of our little strawberry garden we planted just for him 🍓 💕

Hope is powerful medicine! My mother at 92, with dementia, a wheel chair and needing full time assistance would talk about her next trip. The joy she had when anyone would agree with her making plans was priceless. She never lost hope and so neither did anyone around her, even when the only hope left was that of a peaceful death. And that, she received.

I wish I could take you back through our journey with these amazing people my uncles, my dad and show you how many times all hope was gone but somehow they made it. I watched my Dad go into respiratory failure I stood next to his bed as he was intubated and said Left foot forward soldier this isn't how this story ends. I told him that as they loaded him into the ambulance to bring him to the hospital here close to me. I leaned over him before they loaded him and I said I will bring Momma, I got this. Left foot forward soldier. The EMS team asked me what I'd said because that was the only thing he would nod in response to. I said Daddy Tom, my husband will meet you at the hospital. I will be on the way with Mom. LEFT FOOT FORWARD Soldier. It was a long night but he was extubated the next morning and what he remembered was "someone sounding like a drill, telling him Left foot forward. I said Daddy that was me. You told me that all my life and even when you walked me down the aisle. I brought him home a few days later. There is always hope. I'm so thankful for you and your channel because in it I found hope to dig out of the pits of grief. Like you my Daddy was and is my hero. So I carry on his legacy the best way I can... left foot forward.

I am 68, well will be in a few days. I was probably raised a lot like your Father. I can relate with him! We were raised without much. We come from a place where you don't throw away things! I even, at one time, saved the large can lids! Not the huge ones. My Niece had a large leak in her roof at 2 AM! She called us and Danny said, I don't know how we are going to keep the plastic on in this wind! I thought of those lids! It worked SO well! So please don't look at his things as "junk" that he's keeping. Look at it as though there will be plenty of things to go through later! One of these days! GOD bless you all! Someone give him a kiss for me!

My dad is almost 92, a WW11 Navy Vet...slash...minister who has taken us all over this great country of ours preaching the gospel since the 50’s! He has had campers, trailers, and motor homes most of my life but gave his last motor home to a grandson and his family a year or so ago, to use in their ministry! A couple weeks ago he got a friend to drive him from Tulsa Ok to Keller, Texas to buy him a B3 motorhome, because he still has churches calling him wanting him to come preach for them but he doesn’t like to drive at night. This way he can still go fulfill his mission, see folks he’s ministered to all their life, and have his own private place to stay the night, before heading home or to his next stop! He’s never liked staying with folks. It’s doesn’t matter how old our dad’s get, that flame never goes out until they draw their last breath!

I cannot tell you how much I needed to hear exactly this.
    Thank you, Justin, for sharing.
Please give my love & appreciation to your Dad.
(My Dad, if he were alive, would be just a few years younger than yours - I miss him, but frankly, your Dad has better sense than mine ever did. I appreciate y'all passing on such wisdom, it's very comforting. May "the God of all comforts" repay your kindnesses.)

He taught me so much and now I have a small garden of my own. I owe him everything! Thanks for sharing your story Justin. Prayers to you and your family and dad.

Your dad is my inspiration. His constant positive attitude and outlook pushes me to fight for my dreams. I'm 56, have multiple serious medical problems including 3 times cancer survivor, and on a fixed income. I have to use a mobility scooter to get around. Guess what? I have a 2 year plan to save the money to start a homestead. My grown kids and I have drawn plans for ways to modify my homestead so it will be workable and accessible for me. The kids and grandkids are all assigning themselves roles to do the things I wouldn't be able to do (building and such). I'm taking notes, literally in a OneNote file, as I watch homesteading videos from you and others. Never lose hope. Never stop dreaming. Never stop planning your work and working your plan.

Plant your daddy's dreams. Give him reason to hope for his future. I am my daddy's guardian and it has been tough taking care of all his medical problems/surgeries. But dad has become my best friend. What a great "payment" for all the hard work. Please teach your children the respect due to the Patriarch of the family. How can so many of your viewers love your dad? It's easy, because he and your mom brought us YOU and the whole Rhodes family! Praying for your Papa.

I am in a wheelchair and can't drive any more so last week I told hubby that I was going to make Pop a getwell card. I meant I was going to make one on my computer but it was late so I planned to do it in the morning. Well, I woke up and hubby had already been to the store and there was a getwell card sitting on my keyboard. He wanted to send one too, you and your Pop give me hope and that makes hubby happy. ❤️️🤗😊

Busy canning apples when your vlog popped up. The tale of your pop left me with eyes shedding tears as I finished only my 6th pint of apples. I turned to to the 5 laundry baskets piled full of apples waiting to be peeled, cored, sliced, blanched and processed. What seemed like an unending task changed focus. Thank you. Blessings to your pop, your family and to you.

Every year we wonder with his weaknesses & dementia if this will be his last football season, but we have been saying this for the last decade...lol...he looks forward to football season everyday, watches reruns & talks about football even in the off season. Hope is good to have. We all need hope. Praying for healing upon your dad. Thank you for sharing. 💖

Absolutely Justin! Those grandma’s and grandpa’s have been through so much in their lives, trials and tribulations, they don’t know what it means to quit or give up hope. Their dreams and goals might be small, but that is what keeps them moving forward! We can learn so much from them! I work with many folks in their 90’s and they are an inspiration to me each and every day! Everyone needs a goal each and everyday of their lives....1% a day!

Your dad is a fighter. I love the way he is looking into the future, dreaming and planning for something instead of dwelling on what his current suffering or pain might be. Isn't it amazing how healing this life style of homesteading, gardening, working with the soil and land can be even if all we can do is sit and plan it out in our minds? Rebeccas story of healing and watching her become so incredibly healthy and vibrant is also inspiring.

I see you talking about your Dad and how he keeps going and look at my son, at 33 years old, 4 fused vertebrae paralyzed from the waist down fighting to learn to turn over, and sit up, so he can play with his 6 month old child as soon as possible. Your dad and my mum are a different breed of people. My mother is 85 turning 86 in January and she has multiple fractures in her back lumbar sacral and thoracic spine, due to osteoporosis. She also fractured her shoulder recently when she had a fall walking her dog. This year is the first year she decided she wanted a vegie garden so she planted lettuce carrots squash and onions. She is slowing up, walking is hard but she doesn't give up either. Much love and respect to your dad.

Your Dad's story has given me something to think about. I am one to give up so quick. I'm 69, my husband is 74. Our son drove 10 hours to help his Dad get ready for the winter. His Dad has very bad pneumonia. But, Bobby wants to show him that asking for help doesn't mean your weak, it means you need to get things figured out, by someone else, till you are on your feet again. Hope. It's about hope. Thanks Justin for reminding me to never let go of hope. It's what keeps one going.
