I agree with you, I definitely think you're mostly paying for a name with that radio. I've seen other electronics like oscilloscopes cost that much but they do everything except........ things that aren't rated PG. Still, getting to tear into something from a Bentley that's still relatively new is pretty awesome. But being that it is relatively new, that begs the question of how bad must the warranty on such an expensive vehicle be? I mean it's not like he was jamming a knife in the CD player to get his Beatles album unstuck, it's clearly a premature failure of what should be a highly reliable part.
We had a similar issue in the US recently with Chrysler, an obligatory (and wireless) system update caused the GPS system to have an intermittent failure. Maybe that's what happened to this unit?

Really hard to say. For all we know it could have just been a Bluetooth stability issue. Not sure if it had received any automatic updates though. 🤔

Does the car have a dedicated amp or just the head units amp?

To the best of my knowledge, this head unit is it. Nothing more downstream that I am aware of.

All the Bentley GT, GTC, GT3-R and Flying Spur's have a dedicated Amplifier in the boot, from the first GT in 2003, to date, there are no Amplifiers in the head unit itself.
This unit most likely had a bad HDD.
