'We're going back to 1947': Tory MP pressed on Sunak's mandatory national service plan

  • As Rishi Sunak plans to bring back mandatory national service if he wins the general election, Paul Brand wonders why we're putting this 'burden' on the younger generation.
18-year-olds would have a choice of either joining the military full-time for a year, or volunteering for a weekend every month carrying out a community service.
Speaking to Tory MP, Tobias Ellwood, Paul Brand asks: 'Why are the Tories claiming that Labour would take us back to square one, yet they're taking us back to 1947?'
In response, Elwood says it's because we've entered a 'grim chapter in our history' that we simply must prepare for.
Brand also interviews Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain, who stresses Sunak's plan 'smacks of desperation' and 'feels like a punishment for the young'.

As a former soldier and recent reservist, national service is ridiculous. It's emotional nonsense of the Tories thinking we live in the past. Build a better military for the future, don't break international relationships with our neighbours, stop wasting money on corruption with your friends. The army does not want unmotivated people. David Cameron tried this with his volunteering scheme in 2010 to get elected then did nothing. Plus why young people, oh they don't vote. Try doing it with older people you Tory

Forcing people to join the military against their will probably isn't going to fill them will a patriotic sense of duty towards the government that has put them in that position. It's also going to be inevitable that is will reinforce class divides as you can bet the people with money and power will be able to get their own children out of it.

Probably do the jobs of porters, cleaners and kitchen staff which means they can cut the hours of current workers doing the especially as it is weekends when they receive a slightly higher rate or is overtime for some.

We could, but the political choice is not to. Same as things like de privatisation and adequate funding of the NHS or local councils, social housing and on and on. All political choices and not a question of funding. Government can create and spend as much money as it wants. Just look at where the Government borrowing is now compared to 2010. They spaffed that money on themselves and their mates in a wealth transfer from the future taxes of the people. They didn't spend it on the things we need, defence, schools, hospitals, transport infrastructure, utilities..... Those are all just vehicles for the money transfer. See the water and rail companies use of our subsidy money to pay the massive dividends to shareholders and board members bonuses.
      Sorry for the rant😅

It's insane. As a French citizen, I completed my national service in 1996. I was in one of the last contingents as it was abrogated in 1998. (1) Those with connections either did not do it or landed in cushy jobs. (2) Graduates were treated as cheap, educated labour by professional NCOs, most of whom did not even have the baccalaureate (3) Those graduates who expended their national service by 3 months for officer training were considered as worse than privates by professional NCOs. (4) That one year (it was 12 months at the time) delayed entry into the world of work. (5) who would want to serve for an institution that serves greedy politicians who wage illegal wars? There is no such thing as society anyway, who knows best than the Tories!

They had the tools and opportunity to make it different. So where are the zero hours contracts going to be filled then with a quarter of the working month now being allocated to free work for the state. I think we already know. National Sevice was abolished in 1960 because the army was sick of spending money and time training young men who didn't want to be there, and because the public were horrified when young conscripts came back from Asia in body bags. This is just throwing a bone to older voters, very few of whom actually did National Service.
