    Viewed from afar, I'm in Australia, I think it's laughable to talk of the contemporary British military forces being capable of 'global projection'.

    • @alansdorsetfossils4028
      @alansdorsetfossils4028 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      We could project a modest force globally. We have naval assets to deploy royal marines and other forces we have large transport planes too
      However I would agree that although we have the major hardware assets we don't have the bombs and bullets. So it would be difficult without major stocks of missiles and artillery shells etc.

      You need a strong fleet to "global projection". The UK does has a reasonable force. But to be able to enforce your wishes through your military, don't think the UK is there. How can they hold a power base in Asia or Africa for that matter. Look how the US does it. Like Australia, the UK has the US as a partner to do so.

      As we are an island and we’re a democratic country that isn’t really going to be invading others we don’t need an army for anything but to help our partners. If our soldiers end up fighting on our soil we’ve already lost. Britains military defence comes in the form of naval and air force, and nuclear capabilities.

    • @randomcomputer7248
      @randomcomputer7248 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      UK actually has one of the most mobile forces going. Also some good toys, Astute class subs and type 45 destroyers are top notch. Get the planes of the carriers and it can indeed project.

  • @PaulK-ve1pu
    @PaulK-ve1pu 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

    Britain has always deliberately maintained a small army for two reasons. A large army can be used to assist bad actors in coups and revolutions. Secondly, an island doesn't need a large army to defend itself. It needs a large navy and air force. If you're fighting a war with an army on your territory, you've already lost. So, conscription to the army is largely pointless.

      My son wanted to follow 5 generations into the Forces, first one not to go into the Army, but gave up with Capita for both RAF & RN. Capita are useless. My lad got himself fit enough for the RAF physical assessment which surprised me as to how demanding it was, as I thought the RAF entry physical examination was book into a hotel and drink tea, but it was a fairly close to what was a B standard on the old APFA - there's one for old squaddies. He was keen and fit, but no longer interested.

    Hey! Great article, but you forgot Finland - the absolutely best prepared Nordic country of well-prepared Nordic countries.
    And the only one that successfully fought in this century - stopping the overwhelming Russian attack in WW2, twice.
    Facts: Finland (population 5.6m) has the most capable military of all Nordic countries:
    - field army: 280 000 with 880 000 fully trained and well-equipped reserves, largest in western Europe. And most importantly, willing to fight!
    (British army size: 110 000.)
    - Finland has the strongest artillery in Europe with 1500 cannons, rocket launchers and heavy mortars.
    - Airforce in process of replacing 60 F-18 Hornets with 65 F-35s
    - Small but capable navy, presently building new warsips.
    Cheers!

    I was of the understanding it’s not really about military and most people will do community service which will essentially serve as work experience/contacts to the police, ambulance, fire service etc? In which case I actually do see some merits because I believe the youth of this country really needs some help and direction. Too many are going to university, achieving the same job as a drop out, not able to get on the housing ladder or even local council lists, and just basically having wasted lives. So I’d be all for something that’s going to help them. That being said I think this rushed and not thought through and doesn’t have their best intentions at heart. But I do feel strongly that school leavers and their future prospects is an area that really needs looking at.

Out of 30000 national service troops you would expect a decent chunk to stay on so it could be a good investment. ukraine shows hi tch only goes so far and you still need lots of boots on ground fighting soldiers

    The armed forces are victims of austerity. They have been cut back to the bone repeatedly, especially (but not exclusively) over the past 14 years. When the Tories came to power, in 2010, army strength was over 110,000; now it is about 75,000. The RN and the RAF have been correspondingly cut back.
