I read every comment, all 1,700+ of them on our last video. While many were happy, sharing joys of buying a house, having a newborn baby… many said they were going into this holiday season missing someone they’d lost, or dealing with something hard in 2024. So I figured I’d share my own below.. Life is full of ups and downs, uncertainty surrounds us. I lost my grandfather (tattooed portrait on my right arm) in June of this year and it rocked our family. This area I’m in now was an area he invested in the early 2000’s, I spent a good amount of winters in this area growing up. He used to watch the channel, and he’d tell me towards the end of his time “you know, I seen you on TV!” anytime I’d see him. But life has to go on.. My family is healthy, kids are growing. My oldest daughter was hospitalized for nearly a year when she was born, fought for her life to be here.. That was 12 years ago. She wants to tape and mud drywall on this house since it’s something she’s confident in doing, she tells me it all the time. As a father, there’s nothing more that I look forward to than getting this project to drywall and getting to share that experience with my daughter. When she was in the hospital, I never thought I’d see the day she made it out.. Let alone be able to eventually help Dad with a remodel project on a property of ours. In short, I’ve had highs and I’ve had lows this past year, the same as many of you. Life is hard and I feel for any of you who may be going through it. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year’s to all of you.
What a beautiful story Matt and if you live long enough you're heart is full of sadness love and laughter I'm sixty five and have buried a daughter Molly left us with a grandson he was three months old when she passed she is missed so much but her memory of being gangly uncoordinated always makes me laugh thank you for sharing Matt MERRY CHRISTMAS TOO YOU AND YOUR'S
This series has been my introduction to your channel. I'm 4 videos in (all this afternoon) and eager to see more. Great content - learning many new things. I'll have to check out other videos in your arsenal. Many thanks!
This is by far my favorite series of yours Matt. Its nice to see you doing your own thing and you sharing it with us, Its like we're experiencing building this by your side from a far. Thank you for this !
Congratulations to our winners! Read the description, follow instructions and let's get you paid! Over 1,300 entries! If you didn't win, don't worry.. I have plenty more to give out over the next 365 days until our next Christmas giveaway!
Hi Matt….your videos are really informative and I love the way you explain things. I know some guy made the comment that you and your guys move slow, I’ve contracted a few framers and the ones who work super usually make the most mistakes. The work you and your guys do is quality and I can appreciate that over someone being super fast. Keep up the awesome work and I look forward to seeing what you do with the reno!
Just found the backyard studio build series a week or so ago, I’ve been enjoying watching the build for sure! Reminds me of all the fun I had building my 16x16 stick framed workshop with my father in law several years ago. Framing truly is an art, I was amazed to see my father in law figure the layout of things in his head and on the fly while we were framing things up 🤯
Wow, I won! I've never won anything before. I can't believe it! Thanks so much Matt for all you do and for giving back. Merry Christmas to you and yours ❤.
Hey Matt, Thanks for the plans, your easy go teaching style shows through your years of experience - love your work and teaching - keep up the great work.
I like the way you calculated the height of the posts supporting the ridge. I've used a slightly different method but will remember yours when the situation calls for it. Thanks for such an educational approach to your videos.
dig that fancy calculator, but i don't use one. i lay down chalk lines after i nail the bottom plate to the first point wall stud, then snap the rake. then nail the stud, lay blocks between studs, mark ,lift and cut stud. add double top plate, raise the wall. stanley 25' tape. still dragging cords around.
100 different ways to shave a cat. Larry Haun had the best way to layout and frame for rake walls for a vaulted ceiling and his way is the best if you don't want to use any fancy math or a calculator. In the end, all different ways to approach the same results. I would prefer to snap lines as well.
I have been subscribed and watching your videos for some time now. You have inspired me to build and now, work towards getting my GC. It’s going to be tuff and a long road because I’m 39, but it’s time for a career change or a side hustle for me. Thank you for inspiring me brother.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Bet you’re proud of your boy, he’s doing great things and learning a ton! Love seeing you guys working on your property.
My logs cabin had a hand roof on it real lumber the ridge beam is a 1x4 bit of strapping lol big tree fell on it n it got very little damage impressive
Matt, thanks for picking my comment out as a winner. Sent an email a couple days ago but haven’t heard anything from ya. Wanted to make sure I sent it to the right address. Happy new year🎉
I can’t believe that you would work on that flimsy aluminum ladder. You’re a young man with a long life ahead of you. One bad fall will change you forever. Be careful! We all love the content and the information that you provide.
Awesome educational video. Love your 'engineering' commentary. I do cringe a bit watching you slosh through that cold mud though. Thanks again from a fellow AG'ian.
Merry Christmas Matt!!! Now I am going to need you to work New Years and all holidays the first half of next year to ensure these videos get out in a timely manner to feed my addiction!! In all seriousness I wish you the best going into 2025. Keep being you, enjoy life with the family, and making great content.
Both have been there for decades and they’re beyond happy to see it get redone. I’m going to bring up the neighboring property values so it’s a win across the board.
How'd you size the header over the 60" front opening, and what's the ground snow load? Depending on the answer to the second question, (2) 2x6 may be too small for the point load from the ridge beam. E.g. to pick some approximate numbers, if the roof is 10' x 15' in plan, and the snow load is 30 psf, and the dead load is 10 psf, that's 6,000 lbs total roof load. About half of that is on the ridge beam, and half of that goes to each ridge post, so a 1500 lb point load on the header. The reaction at each jack stud will be 750 lbs, and the maximum moment at header mid span will be 30" * 750 lbs = 22,500 inch-lbs. The section modulus of (2) 2x6s is 15.125 in^3, and so the extreme fiber stress is 22,500/15.125 = 1,487 psi. Where as the allowable bending stress for a 2x6 DF #2 is 1,346 psi. So it's pretty close, but you'd need to use 2x6 DF SS, or else bump up to 2x8. If the ground snow load is higher, or any of my approximate dimension are too low, you might have to go bigger. Conversely, it's close enough that if I overestimated the dimensions, or the ground snow load is lower, (2) 2x6 DF #2 is fine.
Love this! Roof will be 8'6"x15'6", ridge is only spanning 13'6" since I have another wall with support for the ridge 2' out (fireplace on the back wall). (4) 2x6 boxed is what I went with, thought about upsizing to 2x8 but figured I was in the clear. Snow load was figured at 20PSF per local municipality.
@@MattBangsWood OK, so if the roof area carried by the ridge beam main span is only 8.5' x 13.5', and the total load is only 30 psf, that makes a total roof load for that span of 3,440 lbs. Vs the 6,000 lbs from my first estimate, meaning that the calculation needs to be scaled by 3.44/6, and the extreme fiber stress becomes 1,487 * 3.44/6 = 852 psi. Comfortably less than the 2x6 DF #2 allowable bending stress of 1,346 psi, given that the header will also be carrying some wall load. If you used an appropriate structural adhesive to assemble your box header, then you could treat it as a single member and it would be quite a bit stronger and stiffer than (2) 2x6s; it would basically perform like a 6x9 minus a 3x6 (the missing center replaced with insulation). With minimal nails it will behave more like 4 separate members, and the flatwise members will hardly contribute, which is why I ignored them. I guess with more engineering knowledge you could calculate the require heavy fastening pattern to get similar composite action with nails only, but that's beyond my familiarity.
Merry Christmas Matt!! 2 things 1- are those the Truwerk pants? And how do you like them? 2- why no rafter ties? I know nails go a long way for structural integrity but those ties aren't much $$.
1. Yes, love them. They’re great, don’t keep me warm, but they’re comfortable! 2. Such a small span, I’m not worried about this thing moving anywhere. I’ll be OK without on this one.
Observations: 1.) “People ask me, ‘Matt, why do you double stack your windows?’” Also people: silent about why there’s no cripple studs under the edges of the opening.🧐 2.) It’s looks cold on the day you were working. 3.) It’s clear you’ve been in the game a while. You have the math down pat. 4.) Nice job;kudos, and greetings from Texas.
Since I ran my jacks / trimmers up underneath the header and didn’t do a broken trimmer, I don’t need cripples there. Awesome observation and smart thinking. It was COLD! Having been in the industry over a decade now, I still enjoy the little buildings like this one.. Hope all is well this Christmas morning in Texas!

300 left to see!
Today I learned what a dead load and a live load is. Very cool.
This is by far my favorite series of yours Matt. Its nice to see you doing your own thing and you sharing it with us, Its like we're experiencing building this by your side from a far. Thank you for this !
It's relatable.. Took me a long time to figure that out, not everyone's going to build new, but many of us can remodel.
Absolutely loving this series, especially as you explain what and why.
Also, if you find yourself stuck inside due to weather you should do a video about your camera equipment and such.

I’ve never been more excited about someone else’s fascia board 😂 can’t wait merry Christmas dude! It’s looking awesome!!
Hey Matt,
Thanks for the plans, your easy go teaching style shows through your years of experience - love your work and teaching - keep up the great work.
Thanks Matt. Your videos are the most soulful. I do not know English, and I watch them with subtitles and translation. Very interesting!

Damn good advice!!!!
NOBODY seems to care about the other trades moving forward!!!
2nd year apprentice plumber here, learning so much! love this series, keep banging my dude.

Perfect series, Matt. Looking forward to next episodes. Good luck with everything.
Thanks for taking us along Matt. Enjoy all your videos.

Merry Christmas Matt! That 2x12 workbench! Never have seen that or thought about it - this episode is full tips!

I’m really loving this series. So glad you popped up on my feed.
I love watching your saw work Matt. You make that DeWalt look like an extension of your arm-- kinda like Edward Scissor Hands! 😂

Another great build series congrats to all the winners looking forward to the next video thanks
This is an excellent series Matt. I think I would have started with a load of gravel, I hate working in the mud like that!
Looking great.
Matt! This is a pleasure to my eyes!
Hell yeah brother, looks good so far!
I can’t believe that you would work on that flimsy aluminum ladder. You’re a young man with a long life ahead of you. One bad fall will change you forever. Be careful! We all love the content and the information that you provide.
Great job good framer. MMC
I love watching the perfection of the build, sitting next to the toppling retaining wall XD
Keep it up!
Hahaha, I’ll get that taken care of next!

Both have been there for decades and they’re beyond happy to see it get redone. I’m going to bring up the neighboring property values so it’s a win across the board.
Congratulations to All the Winners 🏆
Merry Christmas Matt.
Matt bangs wood better than most 🍻
Great video! With 2x6 it probably could have been 24OC just as well, right? I mean the walls
Merry Xmas to you and the Family
Merry Christmas thank you for the Christmas video. 💯💯💯🎄
buy, borrow or steal extra sheets for walking on, saves the mud on your boots!
I made my rafters 2” taller than my facia board. More of a craftsman style.
Merry Christmas! 🎄
Merry Christmas! 🤝🎁
I see that Pogo stick at the end. Ever try ake it off any sweet jumps
Love the knowledge thank you!!
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you too!
Damn, didn’t win this time. Merry Christmas Matt and followers. David
Matt, is that the newer Dewalt framing nailer? seems like it runs better than the older model!

SEeing your ladder rungs caked with mud had me dying 😂
i would just back fill the platform with cement or concert and drill in to the pices and rebar it so its more sturdy
That’s a smart idea, create a footing essentially?
Fun project man! That retaining wall looks bout ready to go though 😢
It’s on its way out!
And no tool belt 👍👍👍
This mud has been killing me.

Also people: silent about why there’s no cripple studs under the edges of the opening.🧐
2.) It’s looks cold on the day you were working.
@ Thanks, I learn a lot from your channel.
i notice you didnt put bottom cripples tight against the trimmers. did u get that from awesome framers?
I did! I hung out with him and filmed at his place in Washington, he brought it up and I thought… I’m taking that!
This cabin is an overkill 6 inch studs and beams under for flooring
Overkill is my middle name. It definitely is, but when you build for a living.. why do anything mediocre? Once the new sonotube piers are poured, this thing will be earthquake ready.
what is a california corner? over here we have something called stockholm corner when doin trims near tthe floor :D
Matt, it really looks like you needed to start with a new fence.
I need a place to sleep first. 😂. Fence, retaining wall, landscaping.. I’ll likely do it all at the same time.
Hey Matt I love your videos although I am not a framer or maybe will get close to it so love learning from you 🙏🏽 I just wanted to know what that app that your using on 11:32?
Construction Master Pro!
As someone who doesn't know anything about building, maybe is it possible to put tyvex or a tarp over the plywood floor and keep the ,ud of it? Merry Christmas.
do you use ring shanked nails?
The face you make, when you do the seat cut is the same as me trimming my nose hair.
😂😂😂😂😂
Merry Christmas, Matt! I am enjoying this build series. Where is this property?

What kind of Fascia are you talking about?
Finger joint, pre primed. Don’t know the name of it up there, but Advantage Plus is what I’ve used for years or Windsor One.
