    Most complete swimmer ever Michael Phelps, no doubt, but most talented swimmer ever Roland Matthes -winner of olympic gold medals in 1968 and 1972.
    He was probably the craziest swimmer in history too.
    Unfortunately there's no video of him on TH-cam.

    Ian Thorpe was pretty good also...
    Remember, Ian Thorpe BEAT PHELPS in the 200m freestyle, 2004 (called the race of the century)

    • @verward
      @verward 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be fair, he mostly beat phelps because it was before Phelps' prime. It would have been a much different race in 2007 and later.
      I've heard Thorpe say in an interview that he sometimes wishes Phelps was the same age as him (Thorpe is 2 years older), so he would have that rivalry to keep him motivated in the sport. Now their peaks didn't really overlap and phelps only became as good as Thorpe in freestyle after Thorpe retired.

    thorpe would have owned everybody if he trained as much for the 100 as well as the 200 and 400. Basically just decided to do this just for something a bit different to test himself so to speak and ended up with a bronze medal. A freak.

    • @joekendras
      @joekendras หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bullshit. Phelps often wins 5 or 6 individual races at one point. This is Thorpe's 3rd best event of the Olympics distance events then so it was a main event for him, the events he dabbled in for fun were the 200 IM, 200 fly, 100 backstroke, were his results were worse. He didn't win at it (and never has won at the 100 freestyle) since he isn't good enough at it. Which isn't a knock on him, hardly anyone ever wins at more than 2 or at most 3 individual events. The only ones who do are the 2 best swimmers ever- Phelps and Spitz. If he replaced the 400 free with the 100 free as one of his 2 "main events" if you will he still doesn't win the 100 often or ever, and loses out on all those 400 golds, so is worse off.

    No swimmers have ever been as dominant as Thorpe, Phelps, and Spitz. When Spitz was younger, he was #1 in his national level age group for EVERY event, and won 7 gold medals in a single games. Thorpe had the WR record in every freestyle event execpt the 50 (maybe 100) and mile. Phelps is quite obvious. However, do not rule out Spitz as one of the greatest of the greatest. The amount that he won his races by (even though swimming was a side hobby for his dental career) was remarkable.

    if Schoeman had the same endurance as Hoogenband had, he would be able to set 47secs or below in this race. However, credit to Hoogie for his excellent stamina and spirit that he could chase Schoeman and won at the final stroke.

    Can anyone explain to me Thorpe's loose streamline? He does that in all the footage I've seen of him. I thought it was just one of those things they hadn't figured out was slow yet (like the start he uses) but in this video the announcer called it out like it was obvious, so they must have known.

      LOL Pieter has never lost to Thorpe in a 100 metre race ever. Not sure how you don't know how he could do something he always did. PVD beat Thorpe at the 200 occasionaly, but Thorpe never beat PVD at the 100.

  • @Ineddiblehulk
    @Ineddiblehulk 13 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    @percdann Thorpe took swimming to a new level, far more than Hoogie, and in reality Spitz "only" had 1 amazing meet (understatement of the century I know). Phelps is undisputed, but it's actually Dawn Fraser and Krisztina Egerszegi who are next best, then Thorpe, then Spitz. Hoogie not in that group, he's with Evans and Mary T and Shane Gould.... that's my take anyway :)

    • @toivonencresto
      @toivonencresto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thorpe is better of Phelps, in many ways. Phelps is the Greatest for the numbers, but in terms of pure talent and Class I take Thorpe all the life. And... the Greatest freestyle swimmer of all time, the ‘Perfect Stroke’

  • @bordereye
    @bordereye 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, I think Roland Matthes has been by far the most gifted backstroker ever, the problem is that not many people knows much about him (the '70 are far away!), and I reckon that Spitz was more talented than Phelps in butterfly. Phelps is unique in that he is a great champion in three styles and not bad at all at breaststroke too! Most complete swimmer ever. This is my humble opinion mate. :)

    thorpe was the 400 free wr holder, 400 free world champ, and defending 400 free olympic champ.
    If there had been another 10-20 metres more, thorpe would have extended his margin of victory.

    • @joekendras
      @joekendras หลายเดือนก่อน

      I doubt that, considering VDH's 2nd 50 was faster than Thorpe's (24.90 to 24.99). More like another whole 100 metres which would make it a 200 freestyle, the event Thorpe had won over VDH earlier these Games.

    This are my best ever in each event -it wasn't easy, especially in 100 freestyle were Popov and Van den Hoogenban as so close to the top.
    Freestyle
    50 A. Popov, 100 M. Biondi, 200 I. Thorpe, 400 I. Thorpe
    1500 V. Salnikov
    Butterfly
    100 M. Spitz, 200 M. Phelps
    Backstroke
    100 R. Matthes, 200 J. Naber
    Breaststroke
    100 K. kitajima, 200 K. Kitajima
    Medley
    200 M. Phelps, 400 M. Phelps
    Any comments? Silly people like andresrojas22 please stay at home. Thanks.

      200 doesn't have a clear winner for me. If it weren't for his drug use I would say Sun Yang who on paper probably has the best record, but with his drug use not comfortable picking him. I am trying to think of someone who defended an Olympic title in that event, but can't think of anyone. If someone does that I will automatically give it to them. Michael Gross has a good case, he was undefeated at the 200 metres for something like 5 years. If he had done better at the 88 Olympics I would have picked him.
      100 isn't clear for me either. Popov defended his Olympic title, and so did VDH, which BIondi never did. In fact he didn't even medal in his 2nd Olympics at the 100. Popov was also undefeated about 6 years so I would go with him probably.
      I agree with all your other choices. Maybe Phelps above Spitz for the 100 fly too though. In fact probably Phelps there. This was 15 years ago though so can see why you didn't pick him, but he easily takes it now.
      Also this was year ago, but would for sure pick Adam Peaty now for the 100 breast. Easily, nobody comes close.

    because the americans think noone has the rite to achieve anything other than them. its great when a great swimmer like thorpe comes along to kick there ass.....they can harp on about phelps all they like on how great he is....but basically phelps has no Challengers for his gold targets in olympics 2008 thats why he'll probably win the 9 hes going for. if only thorpe would of done one more olympics just to spoil the yanks party....what ashame ..

    Thoorpe rules what? he only won 5 golds in olympic games. Phelps has 14 golds in olympic history. Phelp's done something unique which is winning 8 GOLDS in a single olympic games and he broke 7 world records. Thorpe nothing compared to Phelps.
