First of all, you've got your terminology wrong, a brief is a suit that only covers just the privates, it does not extend down the leg, a jammer is a suit that goes from waist to top of the knees, it seems everyone else he is racing prefers the leg suit. It's not really unfair because everyone was allowed to choose whichever suit they wished to swim in. That's not the case anymore as anything covering more than a jammer is banned, but everyone else just preferred a non-full body suit.
@bernapt95 Not if Alexander Popov has anything to say about that.I respected Thorpe until his alleged doping violation found in France.It must be huge coincidence that ban for doping in swimming is 5 years,exactly how much Thorpe was in "retirement"and is planning a comeback.I also think that it was all hosed down due to his contracts with Adidas,Speedo and his popularity/fame in this sport.
@Dannoc100 yeah woulda been a crazy battle but then again Thorpe quit when he was 24 so who knows if he had still reached his prime. I think it's more along the lines of getting fed up with swimming and just not having the motivation that Phelps has. Either way it's a shame that those 2 only raced once in the 200m free.
I will call it as I see it, but isn't it a little unfair that Thorpe is wearing a full body suit, while everyone else is either wearing a brief or a jammer? It would be interesting to see how well he can swim without his suit; Phelps has broken many records in just a brief.
@tonibfan See I don't believe in any sportsman fining sport boring at the peak of it's career!He also had numerous sponsor contracts,he was involved in few personal businesses of his own,not to mention that he had at least 4 years under him to compete.I have never seen someone so abruptly leaving the sport scene as he did.Haven't you noticed the weight he gained after "retirement"?See that usually happens if you get your body used on prohibited substances and than you stop.You are still baby...
wow, his hands dont look like they are cupped... he could probably get an extra 5 seconds if he cupped them better. Hes still a great swimmer... go thorpedo!!!
sorry this is late.. im only getting around to checking my replied comments on this now. im not claiming to know everything about football. Which is understandable seeing as we haven't been playing it for the long amount of time you guys have. But the fact is, you commented very rudely on a video with Ian Thorpe who has never taken drugs. You have also declared to hate all Australians. I recommend you take a look at yourself. I have some great Italian friends and love Italy. Get over yourself
yeah.......i bet the american s are very clean?.......as i said once before, every athlete who performs and not from the US, will be called as dopers. Not trying to deny anyhing...but i guess its a fair game....nobody's clean....
Thorpe is a nice and smart guy, no doubt, very intelligent no doubt, but slow like turtles, if no water repellent suits, he won’t make it through preliminaries
When you see the underwater fotages of thorpe you realize why he is the best he is like monster
oww~ian thorpe..i miss him!its too early to quit..wuteva hppens i wud still supporting him n respect him as a great swimma..
I miss Ian Thorpe
thorpe seems to be not only an excellent sweemer, he seems to be an excellent person.
He's homosexual (gay) he got married to a man
@@YassineAnsari-z1j Still seems like a nice guy, that makes no difference!
hes a legend that guy
ian thorpe is simply the best freestyler ever... forget phelps, forget biederman and watch thorpe...
He is look so fucking flawless!!!!
that was some great underwater footage! thanks for uploading this.
no way! thorpe is one of the most biggest talents in swimming!
but his suit was also great in the water ;)...love that one..
@DarthMuse : 24, actually; it was in November 2006, and he was born in October, 1982.
One of the rare footages, that shows front view of Thorpe's technique
@TheLeilisa yes cause it streches out your spine and twists it, its great for getting taller
Aquaman!!
He look so relaxed, no problem at all! he moves the water so flawless! how he did this? I think he has advantage over his massive feet size
He doesn't rush to exange strokes, he doesn't pull water until the other hand almost enters to the water
Come Back Ian.
His suits is so good,but still slowly
Thorpedo! :)

why no sound after the first 2 minutes?
Why do both the top comments incorrectly spell the word swimming or swimmer.
That's what I meant. I was talking about his fingers being seperated.
@bernapt95

they raced twice, in the 2003 Barcelona world champs 200im, thorpe came 2nd to phelps
Did he have an 8 beat kick?
@JENNY82ist1 thorpe retired at 21 didnt he?
I love him, but he quit too early!
did he retire?
I will call it as I see it, but isn't it a little unfair that Thorpe is wearing a full body suit, while everyone else is either wearing a brief or a jammer? It would be interesting to see how well he can swim without his suit; Phelps has broken many records in just a brief.
Just to add, in all of the videos I saw I Thorpe he was wearing his full body suit.
Pour mewing deserved 2nd for giving it a bash to stay with thorpe
Race starts at about 3:10
audio stopped working at 2:12

@tonibfan
Just be sheeple and believe everything they feed you.
I seem to remember a moment in the last World Cup that.. hmm... seems to make you a hypocrite.. would i be right?
Ian I am Santa Clause Present
i was in the 200m freestyle for my school and got 2:34:14 when my goggle partly came off... i hate when that happens xD
@JENNY82ist1
i love thorpe
but thorpe would never ever get near phelps in the gold medal tally.
of course, it is unfair. That's why olympic authority has banned it.
wow, his hands dont look like they are cupped... he could probably get an extra 5 seconds if he cupped them better. Hes still a great swimmer... go thorpedo!!!
walawalawala1 - evidence suggests that cupping your hands doesn’t increase your speed
@moni0071000
thorpe never went past 1.44 in his prime
phelps went 1.43 in a non polyutherane suit
he then went 1.42 in beijing
.2 apart both in textile

Phelphs the Best. Thorpe had size 17 feet it was like wearing fins. He washed up no doubt.
Thorpe is a nice and smart guy, no doubt, very intelligent no doubt, but slow like turtles, if no water repellent suits, he won’t make it through preliminaries
