Eyes on the Stars - Rob Wiffin

“Eyes on the Stars” has been composed by British composer Rob Wiffin OBE, and this performance is its World Premiere. This work has been commissioned by the Surrey Police Band in memory of band member George Rowland who sadly passed away in January 2020. George was a close friend with many people in the band and is sorely missed by his friends and family. George was a dedicated musician who loved the challenge of playing new music, so it was decided by the band that rather than specifically commissioning a piece about him, we would request a new piece to be written and dedicated to him. We hope that in doing so he would be honoured to know that the world of Concert Bands now has a new work to add to its repertoire.
George was born in Vienna, and soon after lived in Italy until World War II broke out when the family moved to England. During his professional life he was a highly specialized leading scientist in cancer research and one of the first scientists to research drug targeting. His legacy is that his decades of research has saved countless lives, and in his name, a new piece of music now exists, which is the least we can do to say “thank you.”
