I did buy the Stumpjumper Carbon Comp four Months ago in Switzerland S4 in the Gloss White/Black version. The Shop sold me this Bike for 2800 CHF (3130 US / 2800 Euro). which is a absolutely insane... price for this bike. I usually buy Scott Genius Bikes, but the new 2023 version with the hidden rear shock are expensive. I did instal a Dirtskirt protection on the rear carbon linkage gap to protect it from rocks. I also did replace the Butcher T9 front tire with a ground control grit t7 and Fast Trak t5 for faster rolling speed and save up the butcher for the next Winter. I still wait for the Bike shop to call me and tell be they made a mistake with the price, even the box the bike came in had a sticker on it with 6000 Dollar. 😅 This Bike is a dream😊
100% agree with the shock on the Stumpy. I think it was underspec'd with an XC shock. I ended up putting a float x on mine and paired it with a 150mm 36 fox fork. Threw the flip chip in the high position to adjust for that extra 10mm and balance out the geo. That new combo really transformed the mighty lil Stump into a hyper aggressive trail bike. Thanks for the video!
Your bike sound cool. I just for the first time this morning put the +1/-1 head tube cup in my Stumpy EVO. Adjusts the geo to 65.5 degree HTA. For sure makes the bike feel more like the Stumpjumper and I would guess a lot more like your bike. It was fun. I'll leave it there for the next few rides
@@jlj547 yep! made it simple for myself. Since the float x off the shelve isnt tuned for the stumpy I had to run a lot more rebound to combat it's dead feeling nature.
@@sdbuonannob7420100% more damped. In my experience, the sepc'd dps shock on my bike would lose it's damping 2 min into a descent and would be almost too hot to the touch at the end of a run and I only weigh 150lbs so that was shocking. The Float X really helped with the heat and really woke up the bike in a good way. Now i can charge harder knowing I have a beefed up supported rear end with more damping and traction. Totally worth the $500 upgrade.
Great review Jason! I ride a current gen SJ EVO & came from a 2019 Trek Fuel EX 9.7. The SJ climbs much better than the Fuel EX. I can confidently get up sections where I struggled on the Fuel. With that said, I feel the Fuel was better gettin the frt lifted over obstacles , where as the EVO just plows thru everything & soaks up the chunk with no issues. Another thing I love abt my EVO is the fit. At 5’11” the S4 fits perfect. Some companies transition M & L around 5-10, 5-11 so a M will fit but feel a bit small & a L will fit but feel a bit big. The S4 fits me perfect
The stumpjumper evo is probably the best bike ive ever ridden works in the bike park but also works anywhere else its a bit like the santa cruz bronson but slightly more versatile in my opinion
"It's just such a great time to be a mountain biker!" This should be your trademarked tagline. You've been saying it consistently for years and years. I am on a Stumpy EVO and the massive range of geo settings (that make a significant difference in ride feel) keeps the bike feeling new and exciting for me. I thought it was gimmicky at first, but it has really grown on me. Also, I came off a Hightower LT and was immediately amazed at how the Stumpy didn't get hung up on anything. On the way up it wasn't bucking and throwing me off balance on square edges. On the downhill it picks up speed so much better. The sensation of getting pulled back in consistently chunky sections is non-existent. It just opens up and trucks through it all. Great bike! The one con I have in my comparison between the Hightower LT and Stumpy Evo is the feel of the carbon. The Santa Cruz carbon layup always felt bombproof to me. The stumpy feels a bit more eggshelly, likely due to their attempt to save weight. I have seen a number of people posting about cracking the frame on the downtube by the bottom bracket. I purchased a Rockguardz downtube protector to hopefully give it a bit more resilience if I kick up a rock or make a bad line choice at some point.
Thanks for weighing in! I've still not messed with the head tube cup... that's next for me. I have 150 miles on the EVO and just kept it in the stock settings. Not interested in lowering the back.. I hate pedal strikes.
@@mtbyumyum It's super easy. I actually prefer the High/Steep setting myself. Feels efficient, snappy, poppy and still plenty burly for my front range CO trails. Slack HT setting caused too much wheel flop on climbs for me, but is nice for bikepark days.
I don’t. I prefer to run about 28% sag in the rear and haven’t noticed the geo changes requiring me to make any significant changes to suspension setup
Jason, you nailed it. I also own both and built them up from frames (XT builds). To add to your observations, the SJ does have great geometry but you can get the EVO pretty close in high/steep config. The EVO rear suspension is more sorted as far as support. The SJ is definitely a little more work to find the sweet spot. Most will run the lever in the middle. I also have that open mode adjust in 3 to add a bit more support. It’s more prone to bobbing than the EVO. I run my SJ as an XC endurance bike but, like you, reach for the EVO more. The SJ frame is definitely more flexy where the EVO just feels more solid. If I had to own one it would be the EVO simply for the same reason you said, it can do everything. Recently had a couple big days in Quebec with lots of climbing. I took the EVO because the downs were rough, steep and demanding.
Interesting. Thanks! I've been running the Stumpy compression in the 2 setting but leave the lever open... I can see it would be a lot better climbing in the middle setting... maybe that's the ticket. I'm just so used to riding Ibis, Pivot and Yeti where you don't have to touch a knob for climbing... just run everything open. I'll give it a try
@@mtbyumyum I’m 200 lbs so probably even worse for me 😂 There’s not a huge difference between open and trail. Seems enough just to tighten it up a bit.
Just got a Stumpjumper Evo LTD, I love it! It was on sale $1,300 off. The regular Stumpjumper was sold out in my size w similar components. I think I made a good choice with EVO LTD! Love Rockshocks and wireless SRAM shifter.
If you put a 150mm fox 36 on the standard Stumpy, it makes the bike way more versatile. Regardless, I would get the evo if you do more park riding, and the standard Stumpy if you do more trail riding...awesome bikes!
Evo description like a nail on the head. Keep up the good reviews ironic have similar taste in bikes and similar bike stable but ride two totally different locations and terrain. Just finished my new Mach 4 SL build but the Ripley and Evo gotta stay around.
Just got the call from Chris at Salt Cycles earlier today, my M4 shipped today... should have it built by Thursday next week!!!! So pumped for that thing!
My first modern full suspension was also a 2012 stumpjumper fsr, loved that bike but it was stolen at the parking of mt Tremblant I replaced it with a jeckyll, now I have a much "cheaper" Giant Trance x as my all rounder trail bike, I shopped for new stumpjumpers but they were really expensive at the time...
Them stump Jumpers do the job!! I started with the standard stumper and I have nothing bad to say about it that bike could handle 6 foot drops and 25 foot jump gaps no problem very impressive for the price, I just recently picked up a stump jumper evo pro and I'm very impressed on how smooth of a bike it is. It's fucking amazing. I almost feel guilty for having it.
I bought the Stumpjumper Comp. I found the rear suspension lacked a bit of support and went through its travel quite quickly. I replaced the standard volume reducer with the maximum and increased the pressure to about 200psi, I'm about 175lbs. The suspension still feel supple but crucially it feels way more supportive and doesn't go through its travel as easy as it did in standard form. I also increased the front travel by 10mm with a new air shaft. These changes have made the bike feel more capable on a wider range of terrain but hasn't effected the climbing. However compared to m 2009 Cannondale Prophet it feel heavy on the climbs.
There are things I like about both but in the end, I could live with the EVO to serve as my longer travel bike and the Stumpy in the end would have to go.... would rather have an Ibis Ripley
Agree regular stumpy geo is near perfect, I just wish the rear felt like a trail 429. Evo is very happy at high speeds but tough on slower root-filled trails.
Ordered the hip pack with the code. DUUUUUUDE! This is one of very few things that lives up to the hype. Awesome pack, loved it 5min into the first ride.
So glad to hear! Yup! It's super light weight, actually holds the bottle in place, hangs low off your back and easy to get and put back the bottle... so good!!
Went with the stumpjumper because I'm tired, figuratively and literally, of how much energy my '21 hightower soaks up in my up and down trails. My favorite trail has some steep chunk but it's not very long compared to the rest of the trail that has a lot of pedaling. I am hoping overall I am happier with a better pedaling platform for 95% of the riding vs the plushness the hightower gave me 5% of the time.
@@mtbyumyum Finally have been able to put a few rides in on the bike and man am I loving it! I'm surprised how plush it is (in most reasonable situations) given the flexstay. It is a rocket for sure compared to the hightower and am able to keep up with my buddy on a trail 429 np on the climbs. Will take a few weeks to get really comfortable but I reckon it won't be much slower than the hightower on my downs but 10x faster on the ups.
After doing my research and some TH-cam videos, like MTB Yumyum I got a stumpy evo expert 😊 in my opinion Best bang for your buck with great components & geo. Other brands are around $1k more.
Gotta a 50% discount Sworks with float X, Fox 36 Grip 2, roval carbon wheels, X0 AXS and RockShox Reverb AXS. As mentioned in the video there are few bikes out there which make things better, but I took a complete top notch bike at the same value of a SB140 frame. Always looking at Pivot Trail 429, Yeti SB120 or 140 in the past 2 years, but the specy will be certainly a huge improvement compared to my 2017 INTENSE ACV! 🎉🎉
Would to love to see your first E-Bike review be a Levo SL V2 since its basically a Stumpy EVO with lightweight natural feeling motor. Just went from a Switchblade to Levo SL, will be hard to go back to a analog bike :)
@@mtbyumyum It amazing how much like a normal bike the Levo SL feels, but then you 2-3x the distance and have fun going up! :) Really like your reviews, much better than most on contrasting the differences between bikes, thanks for your content!
Great comparison video love your enthusiasm I've still got a camber looking at buying a normal Stumpjumper will i notice a big difference? 🤔 Keep them coming your channel gives me enthusiasm to go and ride 😉
Coming from a Camber maybe you should check out the Ibis Ripley... that is if you've been happy with the Camber. The Ripley is just a better version of the Camber in every way... the Stumpy will feel a bit different..
So quick story: Bought my first full suspension in 2019 with a stumpy LT. Hated how sluggish (was also out of shape) it felt. Just felt oafy (sp?). Felt way over biked for pedaling trails. Sold it and bought an epic Evo. Great bike but now felt a bit under biked lol. Took advantage of the inflated prices and sold it. I LAMENTED over which stumpy to get. Normal logic said to go to the regular stumpy. I hated the regular stumpy colors (lol) and liked the flat carbon in the evo (hear me out). I bought the Evo as it just felt safer. AND it pedaled better than the 2019 stumpy LT! Point is i can only have ONE mtb to cover all bases. The Evo pedals well enough for chill trails esp at the 65.5° head tube angle. And now I’m still wondering if I made the right move. Over the winter I bought carbon Roval control wheels to bring down the rotational wt for the pedal days with ground controls front and back. For aggressive days I’ll go with the stock setup. I *think* this will be the best option for one bike. I have yet to get a real ride in with the new wheels so I’m looking forward. I’m 6’2” 220 lbs and bought the s5. It’s a big bike but I still maintain it feels so much better than my 2019 stumpy especially when I go with a higher than recommended psi in the shocks and tires. It already naturally has much less bob while pedaling. Am I thinking through this correctly? Thanks for your comparison!
I've still never tried the evo in with the non stock hta cup... plan to next week! I've been very impressed with the stumpy evo... although I had pretty low expectation to begin with!
I guess for me I couldn't see passing up the Ibis Ripmo for the past 3 ish years if you were looking at a mid travel bike... so I just didn't give it a lot of consideration.. in the end, I've been very happy with the stumpy evo!
@@mtbyumyum good to hear and I get it! I’ve never seen any of those in person and if I can’t touch it before hand, it’s out of consideration. I’m also admittedly partial to specialized. In my opinion, they are the best looking bikes along with not being over the top with their name so bold on their bikes lol
I also really like the EVO a lot! And I couldn't care less about the swat box or adjustable cup spacer haha so I guess that really speaks to how good this bike is! That said, I think it's cool that Specialized has the swat box... I've just never used it. I've got to say, I've been very surprised by how good the EVO is! Pleasant surprise
@@mtbyumyum That's crazy lol. I picked one up on sale in January and I've been riding it way more than my SB130 LR simply because I don't need to wear a pack at all. SB130 LR probably rides slightly better though, as you said. But I like riding without a hip pack more lol
@@mtbyumyum maybe it's a video Sponsor thing 😉😁 Going packless on shorter trips is actually very nice. Tubless repairset, CO2, 2x Bananas, windshield jacket, snacks, first aid. Everything is in my frame :) I think i can manage to get a tube in there, but havent done so yet 😊
@@IIISentorIII I have a tube in there. Plus extra battery for AXS. Tubeless repair set, etc I also use the water pouch that came with it. I only take a pack on really long rides now. It’s great
Unrelated to the video but been on the T429 for about 2 months now and I'm surprised at how much easier it is to ride than the Stumpy (at least for my riding style). Felt like the Stumpy wanted me off the back causing me to not load up the front tire enough which had me nearly washing out pretty often. Probably bad riding technique, but haven't had any of that on the T429 and I'm riding just as fast or faster. Thanks for making these videos, definitely steered me in the right direction.
Thanks for the great review, why not take the rear shock off the EVO and slap it on the standard Stumpy? Seems like that would be the ultimate ride! What other bikes in that category do you love more and consider comparing it to those with that rear shock with the reservoir? Keep on riding in the free world!!
Unless I missed it, I do not think you have ever reviewed the newer style Epic Evo. This really shocks me, as it seems really up your alley and is such a popular bike from Specialized (arguably one of their most popular bikes)
I have two exact same bikes. I tend to grab the EVO more as it is only a little more grunting uphills. A lot more fun for jumps and downhilling. It didn't win Pinkbike Bike of the Year Award for nothing. If it is a more grown up ride with longer distances, then the non EVO works.
Well put. And I agree... there is a good size double on a trail I ride multiple times a week and some times I pass it up on the stumpy but never on the evo... just gives me that extra confidence to send it a bit!
Back to ask more questions...I previously asked between these two bikes and ended up with the evo. Im now realizing you got your evo down to 28 lbs. Mine is s5 and 28 is not happening! I already put Roval controls to see how much better. Its good but still feels like a chore just riding around. Now the problem is that we moved and I don't get as much a reward pointing down and now do a lot more pedaling. I want a bike that can get down hill but pedal much better and occasionally get to somewhere a bit more rowdy. I have access to a regular stumpy pro for 5800 usd. brand new. I really like the idea of the epic evo but pro level is 8500.. If I go stumpy, it seems it will pedal better plus Ill have a carbon control set and the stock traverse for the fun days. If I go epic evo, I miss out on a bit of travel but better to pedal. I would put my 30 mm riser bars so Im not so forward. What would you think is the best balance? For 80% pedal days and chunky stuff every once in a while? Does 5800 for a pro build mean anything in this equation to you? Thanks!
Hi, really enjoying your content. I currently have a 2019 Giant Trance Advance Pro 1, it’s a fantastic trail bike and I’ve even taken it to a few bike parks… it’s a bit sketchy, but fun. I mainly ride for fun/fitness and as an ex motocross guy, I want to spend more time sending it downhill and over jumps ✊🏻 Specialized have a sale on the Stumpjumper Evo Comp and the Enduro Comp. I’d the Enduro just too much bike for riding back up the hills? What would you choose to be the perfect alternative to the Trance out of these two?
This is a great video (as most of yours are)! I have an 2022 EVO and just love it. It is a bit disappointing that Specialized has failed to update the suspension calculator tool. That would have been a nice place to start but if that's the worst thing...
Yeah, I had the Stumpy feeling really good everywhere but the bike just lacked traction... tried tuning it in and swapping spacers but in the end it just had too much air pressure... lowered the air pressure closer to recommended settings and the bike was just meh.... really too bad. The EVO on the other had has been really very good everywhere!
You nailed it with this! I owned the SJ, sold it for the SJ Evo for the exact reasons you described. Now I'm trying to decide on the Pivot 429 or Yeti SB120 to add a short travel bike to my 'collection' ;). Watched your video at least 5 times, still can't decide. (but its a nice dilemma to have). :) New England tech trails are my 'thing'....not into KOMs, Smooth, fast, flowy. My understanding is the Pivot429 may be more my jam? Thanks for the great videos as always, keep em coming! Suze
Maybe not the fastest but Parker has excellent style for sure! Tyler is probably the fastest of the bunch then Zac. Parker and Kevin have amazing speed and style as well. Just happy to ride with any of them!!
Im considering selling my Spur for the regular Stumpjumper as I want a little more comfort/plushness especially from the front. Wondering what you think.
I just had to unsubscribe & then re subscribe because was getting of your notifications, I thought that you had quit. Wow! Now I need to go back and watch what I've missed. 👍
I wonder if your concerns with the lack of Horst link on the stumpy would be null with an alloy since they retained the Horst? I will say that upgrading my stumpy to 150mm in the front has been a game changer and really made the bike more capable and increased my confidence, almost to my detriment 😅
The alloy version has the older version of the FSR Horst platform that's still present on the Enduro. It's very mushy and easy to bottom out. I sometimes wonder if it would have been better with a reservoir shock but never tried it.
Thanks for doing the review! You mentioned that your EVO weighs 28+ lbs. The stock S-works version weighs in at 31+ lbs. How did you lose 3 lbs? I'd love to have a lighter EVO!
Good review. I ride a new Stumpjumper but would ride the Evo if I could pedal it. We’re not all 5’8” and 145lbs. Some of us are in decent shape but 5’8” and 200lbs.
Stumpy EVO, regular Stumpjumper, and any other current bikes in your stable or have tested. Which one would be best for seated riding on rough rocky, root infested trails? The best going downhill is not always best for rough up and down trail riding. Thanks!
@@mtbyumyum Interesting, I own the current Switchblade with a Cane Creek DB air and it still ramps too much when deep in the travel. It virtually never bottoms out, but I wish it was more linear. I guess it's time to try a coil. I have owned the Rascal and Ripmo V2, and still haven't found that perfect all around bike for me.
Hey Yum yum, thoughts of going from sb130 to a SJ evo? I like to climb as much as descend. But I’m 200 lb. Cannot afford yeti anymore. Will the even feel wallowy compared to sb130?
@@mtbyumyum sounds like you could use one of his soft-snow oriented skis for the Utah snow. Have you ever tried a full-camber ski? More fun than you would think. (I’m a recovering racer.)
Damn it. I really needed you to not say, that the 140 was a little bit better in every category haha. I really slotted into the scenario you represented on trying the EVO; it wasn’t my first pick, historically I haven’t been a huge specialized fan but with all the positive reviews, resources and breadth of the specialized brand I was like, I’ll give it a shot. I’m 3 rides in, in all different terrain and scenarios, and really am pretty underwhelmed/unhappy with the bike as a whole. I was considering a 130/140 at the onset from yeti, but obviously those are substantially more given the Specialized sale. It seems like my sentiment regarding the EVO are warranted unfortunately.
Put the same tires on both bikes, then steepen the adjustable geo on the Stumpy EVO so that it is same as the Stumpy. The Stumpy EVO is going to be superior to the Stumpy every time. The EVO just tracks the ground so much better, corners so much better, handles rough ground so much better, and is a much better do-it-all bike. For an added bonus, you can slacken the geo, install aggressive rubber, and end up with an Enduro/Bikepark bike. I bought my $6300 carbon Stumpy EVO Expert on sale for $4700. With lighter faster-rolling tires (2.6 Rekon, 2.6 Ikon, both 60tpi), it weighs 31 pounds. I think of it as my long-travel Downcountry bike. I just can't believe how good the Stumpy EVO is at that price point. I've come to the the conclusion that longer-travel bikes with geo that isn't overly progressive, lighter faster-rolling tires, and that pedal and climb efficiently, can make some of the best Trail (and even Downcountry) bikes. A long-travel bike doesn't have to be a heavy slacked out sled with squishy suspension and burly tires that's only good for winch and plummet style riding. The EVO can be that, but a with little geo adjusting and the right rubber it can also be an amazing Trailbike. I was just at my local Specialized dealer and nearly every bike is 25% off.
@@mtbyumyum I run my EVO in lowest bottom bracket and steepest head angle which give it very similar geo to the regular Stumpy. I'm not having any problems with pedal strikes with the low bottom bracket. Would love to see you do a comparison video with the steepest head angle with light fast tires (Rekons) and slackest head angle with aggressive tires (Minions) just to demonstrate the versatility of the EVO.
As you were testing Yeti SB140 and Stumpjumper EVO how would your describe climbing with both bikes? I have an option to go with used SB130 LR or EVO where EVO is 2K cheaper. Price for EVO is tempting, but I have issue with climbing and that's a high priority for me. I don't have budget to change bikes often and I would appreciate if you describe climbing between SB130/SB140 and EVO.
The 130 is a more demanding bike than either the 140 or the evo.... the 130 is just not as easy going. As for climbing, the 130 and 140 both climb with greater efficiency than the evo... pedal better to... just feel more support out back under heavy pedal input.
Is it silly to own both? I have a evo but kind of want something a little more nimble and racey to add to the quiver. Giving it a hard look with the frames on sale
So funny, I bought the EVO comp because of the bang for the $$. I’m also “41 and have a young soul” !!! It’s my 1st full travel, Love the review! Any chance you could list your build parts for the EVO?

How would you compare the transition Spur to your regular stumpjumper @mtbyumyum ? I’ve been on a spur for the last couple of years and the specialized sales as you mentioned definitely have me considering picking up a frameset.
I prefer the stumpy I think... for me, the spur was interesting because of how unique it was when it came out... mini enduro bike geo with not so good suspension... it just sort of had an identity crisis going on. but it was just a miss for me....
The Transition Spur is comparable to the SCOTT Spark and a fantastic RC/Trail Bike for sure. But definitely not comparable with the Regular Stumpy in my opinion. For me both bikes in their own category are excellent (short Travel/ mid travel). Personally I do prefer the Stumpy here in Switzerland and if you can, I would recommend picking up a frameset now with those prices. Cheers
Which is a better deal ??? Specialized stumpjumper EVO aluminum elite for 4100 or stumpjumper evo expert carbon for 4500 , I’m the old guy your talking about in your video , that enjoys riding and fitness and longer rides but I don’t need to get beat up, even tho I love hard tails
about to pull trigger on non-evo stumpy frameset. comparing sworks and non-sworks stumpy: the only difference I can tell is the factory shock vs. performance shock? obviously color. specialized’s page says both are fact 11m. is there another reason for $250 difference?
Less expensive or more expensive going with an S-Works carbon frame and building your own EVO, vs. just buying an EVO Expert (with all the SRAM stuff preselected) for instance? Who do you recommend online to piece together a build and have the thing shipped?
Did you ever think of trying the S2 size? I’m thinking an S2 would be close to the Epic Evo medium. Thoughts? I ride tight and twisty East Coast single track.
im looking for a trail bike after mine was stolen. i came from a 2022 scott spark 910. I was looking at Canyon neuron CF SL and a friend recommended the stumpjumper expert. what are you thoughts between these two bikes in comparison as the canyon seems to be good value for money, but the ride quality and adjustability of stumpjumper is better? thoughts?
Wish the current stumpjumper evo had less travel. It's in the enduro bike range. Rather it be 140/150 and adjustable to 150/160. Maybe I'll view it differently if I've rode one. Anything past that I'd just get a downhill bike.
Helps that specialized has big sales going on because their warehouses are full do to covid. Enjoy it now because we have no clue when this will ever happen again. I Bought a Fuel EX 8 gen 6 back in the beginning of March which is more than I need here in Texas. The specialized evo didn't go on sale till the end of the Month so I missed out. Anyways what I have is good and will last for years, I can even switch my bike to enduro travel if need too and throw on a coil shock. Don't need to do that though where I'm at but at least that option is there in the future.
@@mtbyumyum thanks for the feedback, the one thing that hold me back from pulling the trigger in the SB140 is the frame storage, since I have it in my Trek fuel is too hard not to have that feature. One more question Im 5’8 as you are, would you go Medium frame for sure or maybe Small would be a better option?
New Ibis HD6! Way more bike then 😅Mtbyumyum needs lol😅😅I’m currently running an aluminum regular stumpy with Cascade link at 138 with Horst link and a 150 Helm…bike is kind of heavy though even full XT with Industry 9 hubs, 34lbs!!
@@mtbyumyum the rear looks almost like a Yeti without the linkage thingy, sizing is copied from specialized…Ibis is not as extreme on the geo, I still might consider another ibis someday
I've still not changed the geo on the Stumpy EVO and I've had no complaints about not being able to change geo on the SB140.... I like them both how they are stock... that said, I'll swap the HTA cup on the EVO this week to see how it is in the steeper setting.
Duuude Jason. Still haven’t changed with the angle adjust on the front and rear? The bike is great in the neutral. But it’s a true do it all bike because of those quick adjustments. It can be steep/high and snappy. It can be mega slack/low slung and fast. At very least, It’s worth your time to try the extremes of the bike. Plus 10 bucks says the evo runs the sb140 right off the road while descending in the low/slack mode haha
They're different... I would take a Ripmo with Float X and Fox 36 over the EVO but there are still things I prefer about the EVO.... the fit for me, jumping and tight situation.
Just today got the text from my bike shop that my S-works stumpy evo is delivered, pickup tomorrow! Insane deals on these right now. Im in Europe, but its already discounted $2k, and I got another $2500 off. Then I bought the new Sram XX groupset heavily discounted, as well as the code ultimate stealth for a good price. Market feels decent now when I can get a "super bike" + parts for like $6000 off retail.
@@mtbyumyum Yeah at least for Europe - I checked the US site, the deal there is ridicolous. My bike was still about $2k more expensive than the US pricing, even with my ~$4500 discount. Base price here is close to $14000
They're just different... love the geo on the stumpy but the ripley does everything so well... I'll be very interested to see what the next gen ripley looks like!
Dang man, you own a SB140 and 2 Stumpjumpers?!?! Sheesh. I bet you own others as well. I don’t know anyone who owns 3, 4, 5, 6, etc bikes. Heck yeah that’s awesome though.

This Bike is a dream😊
Wow! I'm considering buying some ground control tires... they look awesome!
Did you keep the stock shock stroke? I have been thinking of doing the same thing with my own SJ.
@@jlj547 yep! made it simple for myself. Since the float x off the shelve isnt tuned for the stumpy I had to run a lot more rebound to combat it's dead feeling nature.
@@harry_lyles would you say it's far less on rails and seems more damped/planted? Would love to hear more about how the float X does going down.
Really hoping for a Santa Cruz Bronson vs EVO vid one day!
Hear that yum yum, get that mullet link for a proper comparison
The stumpjumper evo is probably the best bike ive ever ridden works in the bike park but also works anywhere else its a bit like the santa cruz bronson but slightly more versatile in my opinion
"It's just such a great time to be a mountain biker!"
This should be your trademarked tagline.
@@mtbyumyum I'd be curious if you swapped it to the High/Steep setting, how similar to the Stumpy the EVO would feel.
Do you adjust rear shock/fork settings at all after making geo changes?
Were you running carbon or alloy?
Thank you. I think you talked me into the evo. I’ve been thinking about the SB130 also. You hit everything I wanted to know.
Glad I could help
I got the evo by the way. Loving it in the front range
Thanks for the content, I like your review style :)
If you ever get around to testing the Stumpy vs the Enduro that could be interesting :)
I just bought the Stumpy Evo Expert with RockShox on sale. It shipped out yesterday and I couldn’t be more stoked!
Crazy good deals right now. Congrats!
Rock Shox is the way to go.
@@mtbyumyumthanks! About to go get ride #2 now. Really looking forward to trying it out now that it’s a little more dialed for me.
This video makes me want to go out and ride my bike, despite a ton of forest fire smoke from Canada and 95deg temps. Nice comparison as always!
Nice!
You should test Stumpy EVO VS new Fuel EX
Evolution Stumpy vs regular Stumpy! been waiting for this one! :)
Dude, a Stumpy429.... YES PLEASE!!!
Nice! I think most people are WAY over biked.... I think you'll be happy with your decision especially if you ride a lot!
@@mtbyumyum Agreed. Plus that satin blue looks super sharp in person!
Another great review! we truly appreciate the detailed even small differences noted and feelings similar bikes give.
Glad you liked it! Thank you!
Yeah, I'd like to start riding more ebikes and get a feel for what they're all about... maybe do some reviews at some point
@@mtbyumyum It amazing how much like a normal bike the Levo SL feels, but then you 2-3x the distance and have fun going up! :) Really like your reviews, much better than most on contrasting the differences between bikes, thanks for your content!
can you do a comparison on the stumpy evo and pivot switchblade?
Nice video Jason , I have a 2020 Stumpjumper Comp Carbon & it's all I need , at least until I retire in a couple years . May move to Turbo Levo SL
Right on!
The Ripley is just a better version of the Camber in every way... the Stumpy will feel a bit different..
the ride looks so nice and smooth mannn i wish i could afford one
So quick story:
Bought my first full suspension in 2019 with a stumpy LT.
@@mtbyumyum why low expectation? It’s been a highly rated bike the last 2 years.
Interested to see your thoughts on the hta.
Great video. The EVO is great for the Phoenix valley area trails.
That SJ EVO I had fit me better than probably any other bike I've owned... really fun bike!
With all those bikes, it'd be cool to see how to like to store them in your garage.
Haha they’re in my living room😆🤣
I love my EVO! SWAT box for aluminum and carbon version . Also, adjustable HTA too!
Maybe I'll give the swat box a try!
@@mtbyumyum maybe it's a video Sponsor thing 😉😁
Going packless on shorter trips is actually very nice.
Tubless repairset, CO2, 2x Bananas, windshield jacket, snacks, first aid. Everything is in my frame :)
I think i can manage to get a tube in there, but havent done so yet 😊
@@IIISentorIII I have a tube in there. Plus extra battery for AXS. Tubeless repair set, etc
I also use the water pouch that came with it.
Yup, the T429 might be the most user friendly bike available right now!
Stumpy with flip chip in high mode will solve that.
It's on the list of things to do! Just haven't had access to one yet...
I really appreciate this review, thanks man! However I can't decide between regular Stumpjumper and YT Jeffsy. What would you guys go for?
Thanks!
Been waiting for this one J. Nice!
Glad you like it!
Hi, really enjoying your content. I currently have a 2019 Giant Trance Advance Pro 1, it’s a fantastic trail bike and I’ve even taken it to a few bike parks… it’s a bit sketchy, but fun. I mainly ride for fun/fitness and as an ex motocross guy, I want to spend more time sending it downhill and over jumps ✊🏻
Specialized have a sale on the Stumpjumper Evo Comp and the Enduro Comp. I’d the Enduro just too much bike for riding back up the hills?
What would you choose to be the perfect alternative to the Trance out of these two?
Great Review, been watching the whole Stumpjumper serious multiple times already👍🏻 does anybody have put a Fox Float X on the regular SJ yet?
Yeah, read through the comments.... it looks like several people have had success with that shock on the stumpy
@@mtbyumyum I didn't see a review of the Evo from you ??
You nailed it with this! I owned the SJ, sold it for the SJ Evo for the exact reasons you described. @@mtbyumyum Thank you and great job as usual. I heard of that happening with YT but hadn't experienced it until now.
Would be cool to see a SJ EVO vs Instinct vs Ripmo vs SB140 comparison as I think those 4 have been some of your top ‘likes’
Yeah, the Instinct is a great option for those looking for a one bike quiver... always forget to mention that one!
Thanks for doing the review! You mentioned that your EVO weighs 28+ lbs. The stock S-works version weighs in at 31+ lbs. How did you lose 3 lbs? I'd love to have a lighter EVO!
Interesting. Mine is a size S3. Carbon wheels carbon cranks XTR bits. I actually think I had XT brakes on that. In any case, yeah 28 pounds.
What wheels do you have on it? @@mtbyumyum
Good review. I ride a new Stumpjumper but would ride the Evo if I could pedal it. We’re not all 5’8” and 145lbs. Some of us are in decent shape but 5’8” and 200lbs.
Nice. Yeah, the stumpy is a great all arounder!!
Stumpy EVO, regular Stumpjumper, and any other current bikes in your stable or have tested. Which one would be best for seated riding on rough rocky, root infested trails? The best going downhill is not always best for rough up and down trail riding. Thanks!
Maybe the Pivot Trail 429 or Switchbalde... they're just really really good at finding traction and tracking the ground
Do a mach 4 sl vs epic evo comparison please! 😁
new STEVO coming up... why there is a sale
Hey Yum yum, thoughts of going from sb130 to a SJ evo? I like to climb as much as descend. But I’m 200 lb. Cannot afford yeti anymore. Will the even feel wallowy compared to sb130?
My Stumpjumper evo is 38 pounds. I’d say you definitely built yours pretty light.

Hi Jason, your Stumpjumper S-work is beautiful. What’s the weight ?
I love Jacobs.
Sorry to hear... call Chris at Salt Cycles... Yeti's are up to 25% off right now!!
Whats your go to bike? Stumpy evo or ripmo for all around? Trying to decide between the two
Put the same tires on both bikes, then steepen the adjustable geo on the Stumpy EVO so that it is same as the Stumpy.
Yep! Big S is on sale and the EVO is worth owning for sure. Plan to install the cup spacer this week and try out the steeper hta setting
So back to pre-pandemic pricing.
@@marksandoval5361my friend runs his that way and loves it. I run mine high/neutral.
I'll mess around with it and see where I end up
As you were testing Yeti SB140 and Stumpjumper EVO how would your describe climbing with both bikes?
Giving it a hard look with the frames on sale

of years and the specialized sales as you mentioned definitely have me considering picking up a frameset.
Cheers
Whats the one bike that you would own in 2023 ? Has Ibis Ripley lost the throne ?
I couldn’t own just one bike… Yeti sb140 and Pivot Mach 4 sl are an incredible quiver for my riding style and the terrain I ride.
Carbon Evo expert for $4,399 looks like a crazy good deal
about to pull trigger on non-evo stumpy frameset. comparing sworks and non-sworks stumpy: the only difference I can tell is the factory shock vs. performance shock? obviously color. specialized’s page says both are fact 11m. is there another reason for $250 difference?
Less expensive or more expensive going with an S-Works carbon frame and building your own EVO, vs. just buying an EVO Expert (with all the SRAM stuff preselected) for instance?
Who do you recommend online to piece together a build and have the thing shipped?
use my links below the video in the description to Backcountry .com
Did you ever think of trying the S2 size? I’m thinking an S2 would be close to the Epic Evo medium.
Thoughts?
I ride tight and twisty East Coast single track.
I'm 5"8 and rode a Stumpy Evo S3 also in the East Coast. I felt the S3 was a little big so just ordered the S2 alloy elite Evo....🤞
im looking for a trail bike after mine was stolen. i came from a 2022 scott spark 910. I was looking at Canyon neuron CF SL and a friend recommended the stumpjumper expert. what are you thoughts between these two bikes in comparison as the canyon seems to be good value for money, but the ride quality and adjustability of stumpjumper is better? thoughts?
What Specialized tires would you recommend for a hardtail trail bike? Preferably, the same tire front and rear
Without knowing your terrain and riding style it's hard to say... Maybe my all time favorite tire is the Maxxis Rekon
Probably Ground Control
What did you end up setting the fork at? I’m still trying to get mine to feel right
Wish the current stumpjumper evo had less travel. It's in the enduro bike range. Rather it be 140/150 and adjustable to 150/160. Maybe I'll view it differently if I've rode one. Anything past that I'd just get a downhill bike.
what's pounds and feet? there is a metric system.
Nice comparison! You don’t often hear people talk about Specialized and “value for money”. 🤣
Haha yep!
I'm in the market for a Specialized, more tilted towards the Enduro, and given the rumors about a new Enduro in 2024, I guess I'll wait.
Between the sb140 and evo which direction you would lean more?
The fit on the evo is better for me but the sb140 is a whole other level of bike!
I like the new sizing!!
@@mtbyumyum the rear looks almost like a Yeti without the linkage thingy, sizing is copied from specialized…Ibis is not as extreme on the geo, I still might consider another ibis someday
Stumpy vs epic evo ?
For yeti you can't change geometry, what specialized can do, sorry for my English
I've still not changed the geo on the Stumpy EVO and I've had no complaints about not being able to change geo on the SB140.... I like them both how they are stock... that said, I'll swap the HTA cup on the EVO this week to see how it is in the steeper setting.
@@mtbyumyum Owned the bike for a year, I ended up steep at headtube and low setting in back for trail riding.
@@brandonwalker8611 by the way, if you get an old flip chip in the ear of the rear shock then you will get another geometry setting.
Do you adjust rear shock/fork settings at all after making geo changes?
What gold dropper post is on the stump jumper?
Fox transfer
What compound are you running on that Eliminator?
Butcher T9, Eliminator T7
Stumpy evo or ripmo descend better?
They're different... I would take a Ripmo with Float X and Fox 36 over the EVO but there are still things I prefer about the EVO.... the fit for me, jumping and tight situation.
Why are the EVO’s being sold at such a large discount?
I'm guessing Specialized just really miss judged the market demand and over produced.
Wow, congrats! That's an incredible deal!
@@mtbyumyum Yeah at least for Europe - I checked the US site, the deal there is ridicolous. My bike was still about $2k more expensive than the US pricing, even with my ~$4500 discount. Base price here is close to $14000
What size tires are you running on the evo?
2.3 Butcher T9 up front 2.3 Eliminator T7 out back
The regular Stumpy literally has the same geo as the Ripley.
Nope
Stumpjumper vs ripley?
They're just different... love the geo on the stumpy but the ripley does everything so well... I'll be very interested to see what the next gen ripley looks like!
Dang man, you own a SB140 and 2 Stumpjumpers?!?! Sheesh. I bet you own others as well. I don’t know anyone who owns 3, 4, 5, 6, etc bikes. Heck yeah that’s awesome though.
Heading to Crested Butte in September. I have to choose between 1 of these bikes for 4 big days of riding. I’m still torn
Chasing Epic?
