  • Today Architectural Digest brings you two hours north of New York City to Rhinebeck, NY for an in-depth look at a home that feels like an inhabitable work of art. Architects Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia explain the design philosophy and inspiration behind their secluded, off-grid "architectural wonder in the woods," breaking down the intent behind each design choice and how they work together to create a uniquely meditative but stimulating space.

My first reaction was "no bedrooms...WHAT??" But then I realized: this is a cabin designed for short term stays, not meant for people to build a life together.
As someone who definitely values privacy I feel that staying somewhere like this temporarily, the purpose is intentional time spent together, with the ability to go out and enjoy nature or find a nook when private decompression time is needed. After watching this video I love this cabin concept, really brilliant.

I think people who say it is impractical is completely missing the point. This house works as a case study to prove that certain shape with certain materials with certain function can be built, not necessarily practical. Both architect and the contractor learns a lot of new building techniques and limitations of those techniques, thus can be incorporated into a more practical projects in the future.
And to be fair, every person on this planet has different daily habit and priorities, As an example, clients are usually asked what do they usually do most of the time in the house, at what time, and such, thus creating several priorities that are different to the next person. Hypothetically speaking, there could be a family that would request this kind of house. That's why there's misconception of most people towards architects, architects don't just build out of nothing, they are problem solvers, their main goal is to visualize what the clients want according to his/her image.

This is fantastic. The Japanese have known the relationship between architecture and psychology for thousands of years by integration of nature, culture and human development. The Japanese design reflects a seemless openness between the outside and inside dichotomy by merging the two into one continuous whole. Architecture has a big influence on human life. As we enter the new age of progressive ecological awareness, the way we build is going to be radically different from the past. We will build in harmony with nature. I have been studying the topic of how architecture can redefine our belief systems and the way we relate to nature and as such have been able to discover the language of architectural design as having a profoundly unique vocabulary that can be applied to human evolutionary potential.

This house feels more like an exciting peek into what's possible, rather than a stand-alone, architectural success. I can absolutely imagine a design incorporating this level of imagination and rule breaking, but pairing it with a more cohesive strategy -- one that isn't forced to compromise the exterior for the interior -- one that doesn't feel like a collection of ideas that are squashed together. And I can imagine that house being a truly monumental achievement in architecture and design. Because I do see elements that are absolute triumphs (the entry way, for instance) and it's obvious that these architects have a unique and worthwhile vision. If this were a music album, this would be an early example of an exciting new genre -- experimental, noteworthy, eye-catching -- but ultimately a precursor to later albums that are able to deliver more seamless final products, that better maximize the genre's potential.

What architects need to focus on is creating cheap, sustainable, affordable tiny homes for singles. And then when people want to create a family the houses can come together like Lego blocks creating a bigger home for the family and having possibilities of having extensions like a greenhouse rooftop that catches rain and generates edible plants. or extensions to add more room options.
These present architects are not really focusing on the bigger picture of all people but rather the rich individuals that could afford these luxury art pieces.
I find it crazy how some of the most brilliant minded people are not able to output their ideas because of financial instability. If more people were able to pursue their personal ideas to contribute humanity then I think we all would be able to achieve happiness sooner or later. I wish I could live a life where everyone around me is a happy individual that appreciates nature and love. it just seems so bleek.

A house with a kitchen, a living room and a bedroom. No matter how sophisticated you try to make it look. No matter how hard you try to theorize it. In the end it all comes down to those simple things.

I like how they said the space has no defined bedrooms as if we'd never heard of a loft apartment before.

The fact that you could stay here for $461 per night (at time of writing) is amazing. I’ll acknowledge that’s still pretty expensive, but it’s available. Damn.

I LOVE the discussion within the comments. If you have a family the no rooms concept is not cool. Have you ever walked in on a 13 year old before. SMH And I dont want people to look in from the outside. I just love the idea of it being off grid. I think that should be the standard of living .... best way to heal the earth and go back to it since we have the technology to live in comfort without being toxic to the earth

it is an art not practical living area. A lot of waste space and extremely difficult to clean or maintain

Agreed. I did not see a toilet, storage closets, laundry area. Beautiful but not sure it would be functional home.

Beautiful, intriguing house. Wonderful, enthused designers. Glad we have things like this. 99.9 % of people wioll never be able to live in anything like this. Still, maybe we all can learn a little about things we can do in our own spaces.
