- Today AD brings you to Lake Oswego in Oregon to visit a one-of-a-kind home designed and lived in by architect Robert Oshatz. Sitting majestically upon land that was once classified as unbuildable, The Elk Rock Residence was designed in the late 1980's - and has been Oshatz's home ever since. With dramatic lines soaring outward from a tree-filled cliffside and stunning unobstructed views on each floor, come inside for an in-depth look at the process and philosophy behind this truly unique space.

You should really do a series on architect's own homes. I think it's interesting to show their more unrestrained side and how they live.
Yes that would be great. It would especially be interesting to see the homes of those architects who weren't wealthy and didn't have millions of dollars to build their home.

@@jackludo738Haha most people seem to think every architect is wealthy which simply isn’t the case but I do still think it’s interesting to see how architects design their own spaces (when they get the chance). Do these spaces and their ideas align with how they design buildings for others? There are a lot of external pressures on the profession that means that visions are diluted because of other requirements when working with clients. I think we get a greater sense of what they believe in, if we see what they live in.
The way things are going maybe that rental will be the height of luxury for the common architect. A future we can all look forward to. From cradle to coffin, Ikea style, instructions included.

When I moved to Oregon in October of 1992 and started my freelance photography business here in the PNW. I made a 'cold call' to meet architect Robert Oshatz and show my portfolio as I was first focusing on Architectural and Editorial work. He invited me out to his home featured in this video. It was one of those unanticipated meetings, where our conversation lasted several hours as we discussed architecture, art, design, nature, travel, and a list of other topics we found in common. He gave me a full tour of this "Elk Rock Residence," which he had only been living in for just a few years. It really was an incredible structure and use of the site along the Willamette River. In the past several years, I've wondered about the house and his work as an architect, so finding this video today was a fascinating trip back almost 30 years and visiting this treetop home.
I would much rather see a uniquely designed house like this than a celebrity's house.

Love this house as well. Mr. Oshatz really understands flow and designs with emotions. Also the 80s influences in all the built ins are giving me LIFE. This house is a liveable art. Also the facade reminds me of the Cadillac Eldorado and it's everything.
i bet when the light is on it look like something from outerspace that is about to take off.

Obsessed with this one. Love that he is the designer and owner. The fact that it was built in 1988 is even nicer - he was ahead of his time.
The fact that he gave jobs to underprivileged teens for this instead of hiring a huge team of builders speak volumes. Most people would be way too precious to do this. This man gets it. What a legend.
I'll tell you one thing. Under privileged kids didn't build that stonework. That looks professional to me.

From the outside a fancy space-ship, from the inside just a calm, serene, reasonable, light and open living space.
My thoughts exactly. The 70s kid in me is saying it's my dream house and in most ways near retirement me is agreeing 😁
it feels like an office
I grew up next door to this home and spent many evenings running through the backyard/orchard area making my way to my friends houses down by the river. I’ve lived in Australia for a decade now and never thought I’d see this home again. What a surprise!
When he spoke of listening to the poetry of a location, I’ve never heard an Architect or builder talk like this. I got chills. Look at the magical results.
I was in my second year of college, studying Civil Engineering in hopes of becoming an Architect before I moved from NY to CA in order to live the beach life. I planned on continuing my studies when I arrived, but I got a decent job in computer tech and never completed my degree. The last semester I enrolled in, I had designed a circular "tree house" (sitting on a hill side), whereas the whole house could spin on a rotor in order to expose specific rooms to sunlight while hiding others in the landscape/grade. My CADD Professor was so impressed with my design that he told me he had showed it to his colleagues. That was in 1996. This video actually makes me sad that I went on another path, because my goal was to eventually make that home come true, and in many aspects this home resembles what I had envisioned.
You can always still do it. Who says that you can't be an Architect because you want to for yourself?
That sounds amazing! Why not still try to make the house a reality now? It would be so awesome to see something like that come to life and live in it. I would seriously consider it if I were in your shoes.
*Don't worry you aint alone. Many have plans of becoming something else and they end up being something else. My career was to be an Air hostess and I don't know how I ended up being a Teacher. I quited Teaching after 8 years, now switching to fashion and designing* 😆🤷♀️

Normally I don’t like wall to wall carpeting and yet here it’s amazing. This home is a work of art, I love that people with struggles like drug addiction etc helped to build this. What this man did was give these workers not only work but an experience of a lifetime and knowledge in building.
Not to detract from the sentiment here, but most buildings in America are built by people addiction problems

I love retro futurisim for this exact reason. It looks like it was made a while ago yet it still look futuristic, like from another planet.

This is my absolute dream home. Integration of nature and imagination. And, built by hands that needed structure. This is truly poetic in so many ways.

Some architects truly are artists. Mr. Oshatz is one of these architects. Having also closely overseen the construction, working with an inexperienced builder shows his expertise for the craft early on in his career. Robert is in the category of master builder. This work is truly a thoughtful expression in the landscape.
One of the most gorgeous houses I've ever seen. The exterior, the interior, the decoration, the environment... Living there would be like a dream.
This entire story is as beautiful as the house. I love the reason he chose to build and the people he chose to build with him. The house itself is amazing, it looks alive, it has its own story to tell.

This fellow is really something. Not much from that 80s vernacular is worth preserving, much less celebrating. But this is an extraordinary house. It just showcases what a truly gifted architect is capable of achieving when there is no meddlesome client in the way.
Sitting in NY this morning, scrolling through TH-cam and came across this video.
The thumbnail looked so vaguely familiar and I couldn’t place why.
As soon as I saw the view overlooking Elk Rock Island, I knew.
I grew up in Portland, OR directly across the river at an apartment complex. I’d sit on our balcony every day staring at the houses across the river. I was always so curious about this one in particular.

I can always find something to appreciate in different styles and tastes, but holy cow. this property is immaculate. Every single thing about it is perfection. I could've never dreamt this up in a million years. What an incredible home.

This is a home with an incredible amount of character! Almost looks like something out of the Jetsons. It’s an incredible look to see how an architect approaches a space. The angles and sharp corners both feel architectural while fitting into a rocky cliff side. Such an insight and an extremely unique and poetic home.
This house is wearing incredibly well for its age. It's so beautifully crafted that it transcends the now dated decor (a style which gives me maximum hygge and I wouldn't want to change). I hope a house exactly like this is waiting for me in the afterlife!
Yeah, I'd say it's timeless. You could have told me it was built anytime after 1940 and I would have thought it plausible.

It's a valid concern, but at the same time it's also jumping to conclusions about Oshatz's character.
Although never mentioned as inspiration, I'm so surprised by how much Frank Lloyd Wright I saw (and felt) in this home.
He actually worked and studied under Frank Wright!
As did Paolo Soleri, whose Cosanti Foundation bells, made of cast bronze, are all over the exterior. There's like $3500 worth of bells out there.

This is very unique and I love how it's nestled & hidden within nature.
One of the most amazing structures I have ever seen. Seems like he took what others dream about and made it real. The rectilinear angles and spherical forms harmonized so perfectly in the space space is euphoric. Amazing. Thank you for sharing what I would like to called a vision but it's a reality. It seems everything he wanted to communicate and express he did so with utter clarity and precise that you can only feel it.
I have had the biggest obsession with architecture and anything that is not hurting the environment around it, it's so beautiful and peaceful, this house is amazing, I'm in love.

I'm born and raised in Oregon. I absolutely love the beauty of this state. This house is amazing. I'd love to see pictures of ho2 the house was when he first completed it. I'm sure it's had updates like the bathroom etc. But it's absolutely stunning.

I love this so much!!! I noticed that a lot of architects tend to gravitate towards minimal mid century modern with a hint of industrial for their personal builds. Love how it’s sleek, tactile and warm at the same time.

From his approach to designing on “unbuildable” land to incorporating kids in drug rehab programs and empowering them to build, it is so refreshing to see someone with his mindset! Beautiful! I feel there is a bit of frank loyd wright influence, maybe he wished to build a more falling water home, but this is maybe even more fantastical, it’s like a launch pad into the heavens, amazing and what a genuine person too.
I would want to see a architects home before hiring them to design one for myself. I love the shape and color of his house. It seems so much bigger inside than it looks on the outside. It kind of reminds me of a blue bird on the trees

this design and structure is so peaceful and soothing even just watching the video. It made me feel like I have been there before. absolutely love this house. The beauty is in the feeling and energy it gives. It is a place of healing. I got that feeling from just watching it. This place is utterly gorgeous and I love Robert's detailed description of the thoughts and planning that went into it all. As a music lover myself I especially liked how he talked about avoiding parallel lines and reflecting sound off the walls. Everything is so well done. A pleasure to watch this.
