I Find A Bargain Thrift Store Piano

  • Thrift store pianos are usually pretty terrible. "Horribly out of tune" and "badly malfunctioning" are terms people would usually assign to a piano found at the thrift store, but this one is a different story. This piano (and the one behind it!) is quite a respectable little upright piano, and while it may not be the world's greatest piano, it will last many, many more years as a sturdy and dependable musical instrument for a pretty low price!

I love how you can create an opinon piece, including relevant complex demonstration pieces, on-the-fly in just one take (no jump cuts or edits... just pure confidence and straight-forward and well articulated presentation skills).

It's always a treat to find an instrument in an antique store/thrift store/etc. that is in playable condition, all too often I see beautiful pianos at places like goodwill that are beyond unplayable

Well said! Also, thrift stores tend to not accept pianos, as moving them requires special equipment (ramps and a piano dolly) that most moving companies don't have in their toolkit. Just finding a piano at a thrift store, regardless of quality, is not as easy as it used to be.

I picked up a craig's list upright piano on sale for the price of "get it out of my house". It'd been used in a bar for a long time, and was in a house when I got it. So far I've rebuilt the base/casters (that was fun!), stripped three layers of paint, raised the pitch, and re-felted the keybed.
Now I'm fixing the cracked soundboard, re-felting the keys, and adjusting the action....whew. Its a lot of work but its gonna be great when its done!

I can only imagine how you walk in unnoticed...hit a few keys expecting not much...get a surprise...then you light the place up with beautiful music...I am surprised this was not in the back of the repaired truck.

Hi James ~ Thank you for showcasing this great find. Indeed it has one of the best sounds I've heard from an upright. I used to make piano strings for Pacific Piano Supply, and we got uprights in all the time that just sounded, well, from ok to horrific. This Lowrey has great tone up and down the keyboard. Would love to know what kind of soundboard they use. As usual, your playing is a joy to listen to. Thank you.

    James,
    Thank you, that's was fun!
I have small hands and can barely reach an octave, which doesn't matter as a Clarinetist, but
I wondered how flexible your hands are that way.
Of course I realize music is written for smaller hands.
    Cheers

I play a Kimball at church; and while it also needs a little 'tuning', I LOVE to play it. Very nice brand. My favorite though is Chickering & would love to find another old studio. I currently own a wurlitzer and it's a bit heavier on the keys than the Kimball/Chickering. But it does have a nice sound.

Hey James, I very much liked the video, it is always nice to hear vintage 20th Century pianos from not so Well know makers.
And speaking about the 20th century, I remember your video on the Moog Prodigy and you said you were starting to enter into the world of analog synthesizers, did you have come close to a vintage 60s-70s analog synthesizer recently? Something great for a new "Time Capsule Series" episode?

Thanks! It's always fun to use new repertoire in my videos, but I tend to stick with what's known to avoid copyright issues (i.e. my own music, or obscure music like Eduard Schutt's Cavatine). Some Brazilian group actually has a claim on this very video for my Scarlatti K.1, which is unbelievable as this is Baroque era music and is obviously in the public domain.
I quit playing Clair de Lune (a fan favorite) in my videos because it kept getting claimed by various record labels. I am learning some nice new pieces that may find their way into my videos, but they are famous and popular works so they may end up running into copyright claim issues too.

What amazes me is how many decent pianos for free are on FB. We had a very nice walnut Baldwin at a sale a few years ago it went for 50.00.. What do you attribute that lack of interest too? Your playing is very nice. I have been a subscriber for some time but for some reason don't manage to look at the videos often.

I just deleted my earlier comment. I wanted to simplify it. I came across you channel last month and have since subscribed. I read comments but rarely chime in. I love watching you play and review different pianos. Your passion for the piano is wonderful to watch.
I just replied to a free Chickering 1838ish piano. The legs make it look massive in a way. My picture search matched a Chickering Empire Style Square and also another listed as Grand. They have flat screen tv and speaker system on it. It appears they don’t know much about it either, just want it gone. I did make contact and all he knows is the keys play. I wouldn’t normally ask you but it’s so old and I remembered you playing a Chickering. It just doesn’t seem like it should be free 🤷🏻‍♀️ any thoughts?

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Being that the piano is from 1838 it is likely a square grand piano. Square grands have wonderful cases and are often walnut and very heavy. They were made as a space saving design that could be placed in a corner to take up less space. From a playability standpoint they would not compete with even an upright of today's standards and could be expensive to repair.

      @@ThePianoforever Thank you
very much. The case and wood, combined intrigued me. It’s the sound that matters though.
You do have a gift. It’s not just that you can play or your knowledge of pianos, although impressive…. that’s not it. It’s that your not just playing notes, you’re feeling it and those vibrations move through others and has power to make others actually feel it. That’s a gift. It shows in the comments people leave you.
