Hello Saeed [ @SaeedReacts ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wembley Arena in 2015, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community

@@SaeedReacts.That's a bold move, to start exploring Nightwish music with this song. A real drama from the band's history is described here. Very briefly, after the last concert of the tour promoting the album "Once" (2004), in October 2005, the band fired their first female soloist, Tarja Turunen, publicly, with an open letter. Another open letter followed in response, then a good part of the fans took Tarja's side, starting a real public lynching against the band members ("Dark Passion Play"). It was the media scandal of the year in Finland, and some echoes still persist..
Coming back to your reaction - I'm glad you like metaphorical lyrics with deep meanings, you'll find them in abundance in Nightwish songs. So you have a new subscriber here, to witness your exploration.
      All the best, from Romania!

Welcome to the Nightwish Army Saeed - if, like me, lyrics are the thing, then there is no better band to listen to than this one. Tuomas (keyboard player) composes most of the music and almost all of the lyrics. For a guy whose first language is Finnish, not English, he puts most English speaking lyricists to shame. As you yourself pointed out, just four words told a story. To give you a little teaser from a couple of their songs, you have the lines: "So much to live for, so much to die for, If only my heart had a home" and "It's hard to light a candle, Easy to curse the dark instead". Please continue you journey with Nightwish.

And IPB - we all get/take different things from songs - Tuomas's words obviously don't touch you in the same way as they touch me - but it doesn't matter as long as we enjoy what we listen to - and I also enjoy the music - so much so that I bought myself an ESP Horizon - I'd would love to get hold of an EV-1 EV-2 or EV-3 but they are so rare (and expensive!)

Tuomas Holopainen is the keyboardist, chief composer and lyricist and in Floor Jansen, the band's third singer , he has at last found his voice. This is the story of his depression and how he commits suicide in this song rather than in real life. There are so many wonderful songs with amazing lyrics for you to explore considering that he is Finnish so English is not his first language. Personally I prefer live performances with Floor singing so after late 2012 but the previous singers Tarja Turunen (operatic) and Anette Olzon (pop) have their fans too. Most of the newer fans who discovered Nightwish prefer Floor even when she sings songs written for them as she has more versatility and empathy.

    Hello
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen.
This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him.
However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does.
The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly.

Boom, no messing around, straight in with possibly the deepest and most heart rending of Nightwish songs!
As others will no doubt explain, this song represents the aftermath of their original singer (Tarja) being fired acrimoniously and how the fall out effected Tuomas (keyboard player and founder of the band). Here he metaphorically commits suicide instead of in real life in order to try and make sense of everything that was going on. "The End" is the end of the Tarja era, "The beginning" is Nightwish moving on with a new singer, Anette, who performed this song originally. This performance has their 3rd singer, Floor Jansen (and her joining was a whole lot more drama!!)
Fun fact "only have 3 minutes and counting" line.....its exactly 3 minutes from those words being spoken to the blade dropping at the end.

Lovely reaction! Whoever suggested this as your first Nightiwsh song really threw you into the deep end of the pool but you did a great job. I think mostly because you are focused on the lyrics and this is a very lyric driven song for it's storytelling. Many Nightwish fans recommend listening to a number of songs to get to know the band and then do a little research into the back story to get the full emotional impact of the song.
This is Tuomas's (keyboardist ands main composer) most personal and emotional song. It is also very personal and emotional for most fans. In 2005 the band had reached a breaking point with their first lead singer, Tarja. Things between her, her husband/manager and the band had been deteriorating for some time and had reached the point where they could no longer work together. The band decided to fire her, which they did via an open letter, right after the End of an Era concert. Tarja responded with her own open letter explaining her side of things. The backlash against the band, but mostly against Tuomas, was massive and very nasty. Tuomas felt betrayed by Nightwish's fans and sank into a deep depression. He wrote this song as way of expressing and exploring all of the emotions of his depression and grief. Tuomas often uses the poet in his lyrics to reference himself and yes, he does have a great affinity for the ocean. He sees it as a place of refugee. Here he uses elements of Edgar Allen Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum, a story where a prisoner is tortured and then killed by a descending blade swinging back and forth like a pendulum, as the structure for the song's story and also in the lyrics.
I highly recommend you read the analysis of this song by the artist Annike Hausen. IMO it is a brilliant, master's level analysis and a deep dive into the lyrics. As a lyrics guy you would really enjoy it. I would provide a link but every time I do the YT algorithms delete my comment. Just google her name and Poet and the Pendulum. A few thoughts on the lyrics. The End at the beginning is the band declaring the first iteration of the band with Tarja is dead. "One last perfect verse but still the same old song." For me this is Tuomas saying I have nothing new to write for my so called fans, which is like death for a poet like him. Second robber to the right of Christ is Judas. Used as a metaphor for the Nightwish fans that turned on and betrayed Tuomas. The final spoken word section is an eulogy for the literary Tuomas who is about to die. The line " A thousand pages of erased text" represents all the songs that Tuomas would have wrote for Tarja but now would never be heard. The blade falls (Tuomas making the slashing motion across his neck). The heart beat slows and finally stops mid beat. The original version of Nightwish is dead. The last part of the song, Mother and Father, gets me every time. The lyrics are actual words spoken by his parents during the depths of his depression. Floor perfectly channeling the anguish of a mother who has lost her child. Then the words, In the Beginning, signaling the birth of a new version of Nightwish.
For me this is Nightwish's greatest song. Their Magnum Opus. Tuomas pouring out his heart and anguish in the music and lyrics. Floor perfectly channeling the anger and pain. It fills me with emotion and lets me connect to Tuomas in a profound way. This song is no longer performed live. Tuomas has said they (him, Empuu (lead guitarist), and at the time Marko(bassist)) are not those people anymore and they have moved on. Performing it just takes Tuomas back to that difficult place emotionally. Emppu and Marko come over and check in on Tuomas through out the song to make sure he is ok emotionally. Tuomas often would have the sound engineers turn off the vocal feed in his in ears because it would make him too emotional. I am so grateful that he chose to write this song and share this part of himself with us. Everything about this song and performance is about making us feel his emotions.
I highly encourage you to delve into the backstory. Read the open letters. Read Annika's analysis and then come back and listen again just for yourself. I think you will have an even more intense emotional experience. One of the things I love about Nightwish is their ability to evoke emotions in me. Band is from Finland, Floor is from the Netherlands. There is a sixth member, Troy Donockley, not on stage for this song who is English. Nightwish is best viewed live usually. Since you are a lyrics oriented reactor I would recommend Dead Boys Poem, live from Buenos Aries as your next Nightwish song.

Nightwish Army USA (Pa) division saying welcome to symphonic Metal and out Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen . New Subscriber now Thank you . A description of the masterpiece of a song to help you understand what its all about . The Poet and the Pendulum was written by Tuomas (Keyboards) after firing Tarja Turnunen the original singer in 2005 She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. Some say Tuomas was in love with her but only Tuomas knows that for sure . All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying shows . Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, Press and even politicians. He went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song,at the 7:00 time stamp the song says "I have but 3 min " then at the 10:00 time stamp he killed himself in the song as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. They no longer play this song . In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother & Father said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

This song is actually based on a real story about Nightwish fiunder and main composer Tuomas, depression and all kind of things lead to it. As you probably realised, this is a song about thoughts or mapping the phases before the suicide, and How the loving words prevented it to actually happening. Even story is very strong and emotional with such a strong lyrics, this is still the absolutely jewel 🙂

I saw your reaction to The Greatest Show on Earth and was impressed. So I went to see the beginning of your Nightwish journey and to my horrow saw that you started from the deepest end 😱. I shouldn't have doubted you though. Without any context, this was an exellent reaction. This song does have a way of bringing out the intented emmotions, even without context, but your interpetations of the lyrics were great. If you're a lyrics person, you will absolutely love Nightwish. Their music is amazing from multiple points of view.

A big welcome to the Nightwish Universe - which I think will be perfect for you. And I must say I smiled a little, because you started with telling that you don't know Nightwish, you are a lyrics guy - a this song is 14 minutes looong.
Well - I bet you didn't notice the 14 minutes, because this masterpiece sucked you in from the first second, a didn't let you free before half an hour after the song finished 😏.
Tuomas is called Metal Mozart for a reason - and Floor..... you will probably never find another storyteller of her caliber. As you felt, she can express emotions, passion and feelings like no one else - she can actually bring people to tears on live TV (we will get there later).
Now you have met Nightwish - and a few of the Nightwish Army - a few hundred thousands of very keen and friendly fans, that will assist you on you journey into the Nightwish Universe.
And just ask - because the lyrics are complexed and poetic, often with quotes from scientist an/or writers, and in many layers. They are written to be individually interpreted - but there is a red line, and we can help you to track in or give you background and wider angels.
And this was not their longest.... 😂
Please always stick to the live versions ( except songs from Human Nature album)
I recommend the concerts with Floor as lead

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on TH-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered TH-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

@@SaeedReacts. There are a number of great symphonic metal bands similar to Nightwish from the Netherlands you should checkout. Two of my favorites are Epica and Blackbriar. Both are female fronted bands. Epica has been around not quite as long as Nightwish (about 20 years) and is darker, heavier, more symphonic then Nightwish. Blackbriar is a relatively newer band that leans heavily into dark, gothic themes and imagery in their songs and videos. For Epica I would recommend Sirens- of Blood and Water. Inspired by the original Little Mermaid story by Hans Christian Anderson but with a dark twist to the ending. For Blackbriar I would recommend Arms of the Ocean (interesting lyrically as the perspective shifts between a sailor and a siren) or My Souls Demise (inspired by the medieval practice of sin eating). All good lyrically driven songs.

Welcome to the rabbit hole of Nightwish! 😁 You are gonna love Nightwish since you are a lyrics guy. They have such wonderful stories!
This is a powerful, emotional song... in a way maybe a bit difficult as a first song to hear from Nightwish but it is just as good song to start as any otheer song from them. The meaning behind the song is just very deep. Like others here in the comments have said, this was Tuomas' (the keyboradist and the writer of the song) way of dealing with depression. Tuomas suffered a lot when he (and the band) had to fire Nightwish's original lead singer Tarja Turunen. Writing this song helped him to deal with the aftermath of that situation and the feelings involved.
But what can I say, from great sorrow and pain came amazing song.
Tuomas Holopainen is a mastermind and he is called the metal mozart. He is really talented composer and lyricist.
The singer here is Floor Jansen (as you noticed). She is also amazing. She has one of the greates voices in music as you'll come to notice.

Hello Saeed and welcome to the phenomenal world of Nightwish. As you like good poetry you're in the right place with NW. Tuomas (pronounce TOO-oh-mas) is a poet, an empath and calls himself an escapist. In his lyrics he often refers to the innocence of a child and his happy childhood. He wanted to become a marine biologist but the music took over but he is still an Ocean Soul (also often referred to in his lyrics). In this song was the line "I cannot cry 'cause the shoulder cries more", it meant that he couldn't go to his fellow bandmembers with his grief because they were also dealing with their feelings and couldn't console him. Luckily that sad period is over now. Today Tuomas is a happily married man and the band is better than ever. I hope you will enjoy more NW music and poetry! New sub here. Greetings from The Netherlands!

"The end" lyric at the beginning I think is in reference to the end of an era with Nightwish's first singer (Tarja Turunen) whom had been ousted from the band after 9 years.
"The beginning" lyric at the end is probably the recognition of rebirth for the band moving forward with a new singer and also a new beginning into maturity as an adult. The lyric of 'infanticide' could mean the death of innocence of a young man being forced to become a mature adult - making adult decisions. (firing his long time school friend - first singer)
This is the first song on the first album with the new singer back in 2007, perhaps to send a clear message that as upsetting as it was - the band is moving forward without Tarja Turunen.
The music and lyrics inbetween 'the end/the beginning' is the expression of turmoil and sacrifice and depression that occurred after firing the first singer. Lot's of biblical references and Edgar Allen Poe references to The Pit & Pendulum.
It's a song worth putting more time into, especially once you have listened to more Nightwish and discovered the band and it's members. I recommend coming back to this once you have more songs 'under your belt'.
If you love lyrics then you'll love Nightwish. I encourage you to dive deeply into them, you'll be glad you did.

One way to interpret the "the End" and "the Beginning" is that this describes one phase of life ending and a new chapter beginning.
He went so deep he had to reinvent himself to become whole again. And it was of course an end of an era for the band, too, having kicked their lead singer who was part of the signature, and start of something new.

Welcome and this is an unusual start to Nightwish, as this is a very personal song for the keyboardist and composer, Tuomas Holopainen. This was the song he wrote after the first singer was let go and he got massive hate from both fans and critics. He was very depressed for a long time, so this was a way of handling that part of his life.
Regarding the lyric part "2nd robber to the right of Christ", this is what I find:
The one to Christ's right has become known as the “Good Thief,” while the one to His left is referred to as the “Unrepentant Thief.” While the Gospels do not mention specific names, tradition tells us the Good Thief was named Saint Dismas, and the Unrepentant Thief, Gestas.
Hope to see You go down the rabbit hole of Nightwish.

Hope you dive down the rabbit hole.
Tuomas is inspired by all things, including poetry (Poe in this one), and incorporates his muses into his song writing.
I think he would be honored if it inspired you to write something and feel creative.
Here he deals with his emotions following the firing of the first singer and watching fans/friends/and even govt officials take her side, even though it was unanimous by the band & warranted (she was leaving anyway the following year to go solo).
To me, it is the stages of grief from sadness & depression, through hopelessness, anger, and then acceptance & hope, given by his parents who said the actual words to him in the end section. It is "The Beginning" because it started a new Era of the band. :)

Tuomas is the keyboard player. He writes 90 % of the songs. This song is written about their fist Singer that the band fired. However he was blamed by a lot of fans. This was a way of coming to terms with it. If you notice it's exactly 3 minutes from the talking part. To him slicing his throat. Also it's very emotional for him. You may have noticed the guitar player (Emppu) and the bass player (Marko) com stand beside him for support.

Heady place to start with Nightwish😃
This song is a masterpiece, but there's a lot to it. As you said you'll need many listens to catch it all.
I’ve seen some people misconstrue the line “Second Robber to the Right of Christ” as Judas because of his position in DaVinci’s “The Last Supper,” but Tuomas is never careless with lyrics, and Judas is not a “robber.”
Tuomas is calling himself a “Penitent Thief.” The Penitent Thief in the Gospel of Luke Chapter 23, Vs 40-43 is one of the two criminals crucified with Jesus, one to his left and one to his right, the first of whom (often called the impenitent thief) challenges Jesus to prove he is the messiah by getting them all out of the mess they’re in. The Penitent thief rebukes the other, calling their sentences just, but stating that Jesus had done no wrong, and asks Jesus “remember me, when you come into your kingdom, to which Jesus replies “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." Luke never actually says which robber was on which side, but tradition holds that “the good thief” was on the right, and this is how they are generally depicted in religious art.
Welcome to the Rabbit hole, brother, it's a deep one.
Give Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013 a listen.
Prepare for the Valkyrie Goddess to Floor you again.😃

This is a very interesting choice as the very first song to react to Nightwish, but as a new listener, is alright, but usually, this one is either the last, or second last song to do, due to its heavy content and dark background, most newbies start with Ghost Love Score, I guess the person who recommended this one wanted to make you "suffer" 😅 but hey, you enjoyed it, that's the good thing of going blind. I'm a writer as well and Tuomas' composition style has woken up my muse, who had been in hybernation, until I re-discovered them, a few years ago
