When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora. They were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. Ruka’s dad and the other adults who work at the aquarium are only distantly aware of what the children are experiencing as they get caught up in the mystery of the worldwide disappearance of the oceans’ fish.
CHILDREN OF THE SEA is the latest feature from Japan’s STUDIO4°C (known for Tekkonkinkreet, MFKZ, Mind Game, Animatrix, Batman: Gotham Knight, and others), and is directed by Ayumu Watanabe, with a score by award-winning composer and longtime Studio Ghibli collaborator Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro). Japan in a nutshell
The lips are uncanny to me. It's like all of the characters were stung by bees there, and I keep thinking it's painful for them to talk.

I'd argue the opposite. Everything else looks mostly "realistic" while the characters have "classic" anime face proportions: eyes are unnaturally large with a tiny nose and mouth (except for the lips, ugh). Other than that, everything else does look beautiful.
Exec: "whadda the kids like nowadays?"
Watanabe: "Well, I hear animes are popular in the west again. Do you think we could distribute overseas?"
"Okay, okay we can get those crowds but I need MORE! Gimme trends!"
"Uhh well they liked the movie 'Annihilation' and the even weirder looking 'Colour out of Space' so.....ocean madness themed?"
"DO THAT BUT WHOLESOME AND WITH WHALES!"
Original mangaka draws in this exact style and it's stunning even looking from the perspective of classic-painting-school-warrior. His works are so much better than this anime but still I think studio 4c made a pretty decent job here. I don't even want to compare him to makoto sinkai but I believe that Igarashi's work are in the same level of dedication.
Fun fact: this studio animated a fight scene in the Amazing world of gumball

Well nowadays is an understatement because this has been done even since the 1900s. Remember Princess Mononoke? I don't know if that was the intended message via that movie but that's how I started seeing it when I changed my major to Sustainability. Now I am starting to see that in Naussica and the Valley of the Wind.

I seriously recommend reading the manga, and before reading it, listen to “Spirits of the Sea” by Kenshi Yonezu (read the lyrics too) It’s a slow story but it’s magical. Also, this movie looks pretty much like the manga art.

Having already seen the movie, I got to say that it's a unique experience and the last 20 minutes are quite insane both narratively and visually speaking (the entire movie is just gorgeous to look at, but man, that was something else). Go watch it if you have the chance!

@@LutherTaylor It's Joe Hisaishi we are talking about, he's a master at this, and I personally think that this movie has some of his best works ever. Just try listening to "Song of the Stars" or "The Connection of Life" and you'll see what I mean. Words can't do it justice.
I just watched the movie but I didn't understand it fully where did umi go is he made of black matter why did sura go what happened I'm confused and towards the end she started crying saying why me is she like sura and umi answers pleasseee

The visuals of this movie were something I’ve never saw before. The color work is particularly insane and completely unique. It’s so fresh and beautiful. I highly recommend you to see it even if the scenario is a little bit difficult and completely symbolic based. It’s truly an astonishing movie.
For someone who have actually read this manga, this gives me the chills I need to feel, and I'm sure watching it will make me bawl my eyes out! Even my emotions cannot! 🧡

Watched this in a japanese film festival screening and god. This is the most beautiful anime probably in the last two or three years. 4°C is winning again after mind game and tekkonkinkreet. I hope people can appreciate this movie!

I saw this movie in France a few months ago and was so confused as to why absolutely no one was talking about it online seen as it is an absolute masterpiece . I’m just realising now that it hasn’t been broadcast in any English speaking countries yet so that explains why 😅

It's been month and even almost a year since its japanese release and i didn't understand why no one talked about this and japan even contended weathering with you instead of children of the sea for best animated movie in oscars. Also this didn't win in japan prize academy for best anime so idk what's wrong :/

I've read the manga, and it's incredible! I will say, though, that if you go into it expecting it to be strongly plot driven, with explanations for everything that happened, you'll be disappointed. The story kind of meanders and leaves you to draw your own conclusions.

Children of the Sea is honestly one of my favorite mangas and I'm so excited they're making it into a movie!! Since the original manga art and story is so beautiful, I have very high expectations for the animation.

Omg I have read the manga from 5-7 years ago. I am happy they are making a movie on it! The manga was so beautiful and this movie just portrays how I would read the manga in color and motion 🥰
This is giving me massive Penguin Highway vibes. Mysterious appearance of an ordinary animal? It's an marine animal? Something supernatural occurring around the same time? Children on this adventure during their summer break?? Love it.
This is also my first thought when i watched this for the first time! But i guess penguin highway is more children-friendly despite the subtle reflective message they tried to convey.
@@swingingarashi9956 Very much so. Children of the Sea is certainly not a typical wholesome feels good coming of age story and it's a heck lot darker than you'll expect.
If you have read the manga, there are a lot of additional side stories about the mysteries surrounding the oceans that are probably not included in the films about people's recounts and reports on their experience with the deep ocean including some freaky disappearances and meetings.
Watched this movie, it was so good. The story, the message, the colors. It took my breath away.

Is it that there is more diversity or is it that this appeals more to the western market audiences? There maybe be hundreds of movies not released to the west because there isn't a cast as diverse as this one movie is throughout the year. I'm not saying it's anything grand but it's a small step towards the right direction.
@@Meimoons It was written as a manga nearly a decade ago chill it's not that deep. If anything, it's more amazing that it became an anime because it's pretty niche as mangas go and you know, nearly a decade old by now.
