Kinda been blown away by the QC of these SE’s. Have had several come through (not this model specifically) that have all been incredibly well manufactured. Many things that don’t get the time they deserve, such as nut height, have been dialed in on all them. Genuinely makes me happy, as I know affordable is subjective, but the SE line has been what I’m recommending.
I agree! i’ve purchased two SE’s this year, a MacCarty 594 and CE 24. I got the MacCarty on Clearance at Guitar Center, which was a big surprise! I’ve had many high quality guitars in the past, such as Gibson Les Pauls and Fender Strats, and the PRS model qc is superior to Gibson for sure. Also they were super dialed in at the factory. No setup needed on either. Their partnership with Cort in Indonesia has created an extremely well made instrument below $1,000!
I’ve watched a gazillion SAS reviews and this was the best. Thanks for taking time to play through all the configurations and with various amount of drive. Very helpful. 😊
I picked up an SAS and played it Saturday night. My band covers rocl, pop and country. We play 40+ songs per gig. My backup was my CE24. The CE never made it on stage except when i tuned it.
Nice King’s X reference. Over My Head is fantastic song. Really enjoying your channel as well as Ragdoll. You’re a heck of a player & I really like the gear tutorials, especially the amp modeling videos. Wishing you continued succes.
Really loving these intros , come said the boy, vibrato , phrasing, great guitar talent on display here !, looking forward to future intros getting wilder and more flamboyant ala Sykes , Norum etc!!!!
I picked up one of these from my local dealer a day or two before their "official" release. Fantastic guitar. My other guitars are a Strat and a Tele. So, I think you are spot on about who might appreciate these the most.
I own one and just love it. I couldn't believe the quality for 679.00 on sale new. What a steal for the money. I did own an American SAS and regret to this day that I ever parted ways with it. Well done Leon 💪👍
Who cares what it sounds like when the looks are that good 🎉 But, seriously what we have here: the best session / all around guitar on a budget. Well done mr Smith ❤
In the late '90s i had a swamp ash with a maple cap that was all black with a clear coat edge showing oft the maple like it was a binding. Two double dragons for humbuckers and a rotary 5 way selector. Maple neck and fretboard... it was the greatest guitar i ever owned and i toured and recorded with it for years until it was stolen.. it was one of a kind. Haven't had it for 15 years now. Tomorrow my purchase of this guitar arrives and i really can't wait. I know it's not going to be the same but it will feel the same and that's half the battle. Looking forward to this sexy strat 2 and 4 positions and hopefully coaxing some beef out of the HB's... might be the one I've been looking for for a long time! Great video Leon! I watch all of your stuff and it's the one channel on guitar that always gets it right. I trust you implicitly. I live out in the middle of the Pacific in Maui and love the aussie take on all things guitar! Keep it cranked!
Great video Leon and hello from sunny Brisbane. I have both and the exact Swamp ash. Like yours, mine came pretty much setup perfectly out of the box. Frets are smooth and consistent and the nut lined up perfectly with the edge of the fretboard. I agree, the swamp ash is a turbo charged strat but the 85/15s give out some sweet gain tones. I can't put the thing down at the moment, but I have to say, my DGT SE gold top is something else on the tone front. Sound's nothing like any other PRS SE. Sweet guitar and looks great too.
I’ve had mine in iris blue for about three weeks now and for what I paid for the guitar it’s phenomenal, hell if I’d paid 500$ more than what I did it would have still been worth it. The build quality is amazing, the feel is incredible the ease of playing, the tone, the neck is my favorite so far I was worried because I usually lean toward ultra thin necks but I actually really like the way this neck feels . It even inspired me to play some things out of my typicalme to comfort zone I’m usually a metal guy all the way but I’ve been getting a different vibe with this instrument and learned part of slow dancing in a burning room which I don’t think I would have with my Jackson’s or Epiphone or Dean’s. To sum my rant up . Buy this guitar now while you can get them so cheap before the end of the year and if your not able to then buy it after the end of the year regular price it will still be worth it!!!!
Ive had mine for a little over a month now. You nailed it on build quality, ease of play (WOW!), and feel. I have a few Strats to include a HSS and HSH, and the SAS inspires my playing completely differently from those. Probably my easiest to play guitar straight out of the box, just phenomenal what PRS is doing compared to the other big 2 in the price range!
I love that guitar.. What a beautiful guitar.. I love Swamp ash! From the bowels of southern US. The combo of pickups and split tones is awesome too.. Man, your lead playing was killer at the start of this.. I just love the maple fretboard too and the tone is just killer.. I bet that would be great to play some Lynard Skynard and southern rock stuff all the way to some Judas Priest! Very cool.. Great demo my friend.. I couldn't wait to see this vid after eating breakfast. Had to elevate my right fractured leg because my foot is swollen and put ice on it and watch videos.. haha.. What more could you ask for! 😛It's going to be a great day though all things considered.. Have a great day my friend and better week ahead! Tim
Love my Swamp Ash Special. Bought it on a whim because of the current sale and it’s quite possibly the most comfortable guitar I own. Only thing I had to do out of the box was intonate the low E strong but otherwise was setup perfectly.
I had mine about a week now. I changed the 9 gauge strings for 10s and also had to intonate the low E which was a little sharp when pressing notes. Use it on a gig last Friday and it cut through the mix nicely. My two main guitar are a Mexican thin line and an American Strat. I am please with the purchase. The sale price and look sucked me in. LOL. Cool demo.
I have recently got the same Swamp Ash Special, and i agree the feel straight out of the box was just awesome. I think it can compliment the DGT well, as it gives a different tonal.pallette, love my PRS SE Guitars, to the point i hardly play my custom shop guitars as much
By far the best review if the SAS SE on TH-cam. PRS show have review all there guitars an amps. The comparison to the DGT SE at the end was very interesting too great job!
I like and admire the versatility of tone the pickup and switch arrangement provides. It sounds very good, but my bias is towards the kind of tone the DGT produces.
Now I can make My Dreams come true. I just purchased One of the Exact same guitar! redwood ash You made it sound incredible.... I'm hooked, brother! Thanks! Thanks for the Axe Fx Ultra video also. I have one!
I don't understand why they don't use the parallel wiring instead of only split and full series HB modes, parallel wiring of an hb does not compromise trebbles while not sounding as thin as split HB coils. Great playing as always Leon!
For me the drawback of parallel wiring is that it sounds out of phase when distortion is applied and the drop in volume in clean sounds is bigger than the split sounds
Mine was amazing to start. One thing I noticed was my Pickup rings started to bend weirdly. It doesn't affect anything but it isn't that attractive. I also have a weird harmonic with most distortion pedals. It does work well with a boss Blues driver though.
Sounding really good, and your playing is always impressive. I've never been impressed by any of the PRS guitars that I have seen in person, they always seemed to lack something in the finish and the scale length felt a little strange. Maybe I just haven't encountered any of the good ones, I don't know. Based on this demo, however, I would be interested in tracking one down and giving it a try. Well done! And you busted out the Schenker riff again.......
I already own a SE Zach Myers and it is a truly incredible guitar for the price and I'm really wanting another PRS because of it. I am intrigued by the SAS, but I'm not a big fan of maple fretboards, but I'd still like to try one. The variety of available sounds is interesting and it seems to nail those classic Fender-ish tones very well. I did notice the guitar is very bright sounding, so I am eager to try one in person to see if some of that can be tamed. Clearly, it's a guitar that can cover a lot of territory and it really looks amazing too.
Well, now you have me wanting to spend more money on a guitar I really do not need! Killer review! I have an older SE, custom 24, which I have just gigged the hell out of and still plays beautifully. Sounds great. I’ve been looking to pull the trigger on that DGT. But I do love that stratiness of the swamp Ash. I love you reviews buddy killer playing, Great chops looking forward to more
Great review and playing mate. Which of those 2 SE’s would you recommend to someone who plays a Gibson LP Double Cut with P90’s and an S series Ibanez for the Floyd. I play mainly rock, blues, metal. Cheers Tiger!
Double that respect, I knew this guy was a good player the first 30 seconds. Any Schenker fan gets 3x points. I’m a bass player for 30 years, finally busted my left nut on this exact model to have handy in the studio .
Mondo rock intro🙏🎸 I was wondering if you had tested one of these, I got my PRS now, but man if this was at my store when I got mine, I would have had to test that ash.
Some of the split tones sounded a little thin to me, what would you think about switching out that middle pickup with a "hot" single coil? Never heard of steel being used in a pickup so it's hard to get a feel of where that pickup sits in terms of output.
You make it hard for someone to choose. But i think i will go with the SAS for my next guitar. Maybe the fact that i own a DGT help me with this decision
I went and played the SAS , Paul’s guitar, both DGT, Tremonti, plus new custom 24. All SE. while the gold top DGT definitely felt and played like a much more expensive guitar, the SAS sounded superior to all of them. You really cannot hear it in the videos. I play mostly hard rock with some blues. BUT my pick kept hitting the nipples on the center pickup. I’m shocked that they didn’t address that.
I want a 24 fret version of the zach myers with locking tuners and a trem givit that with the see thru purple burst and gold hardware and itd be game over 💜
Welp, I think I've found my electric guitar. I'm a bass player and can't justify owning several nice electric guitars when I only ever play them just for fun, a decent guitar that does that many things acceptably well and isn't wildly expensive is pretty perfect for me. I have an old Guild S-100 that's beat to hell but plays and sounds great and a super janky cobbled-together Nashville Tele partscaster that sounds good but sucks, haha! My buddy's wanted my Guild forever and the Tele-thing can get chucked over the hill for all I care, this thing seems like it'd do most of what those two will.
To be clear: this has a wider nut than the SE DGT (in other words, the same nut width as every SE guitar other than SE Silver Sky). Personally, the SE DGT is the only affordable PRS guitar I can play (due to its narrower nut). Yes, that guitar's name is "SE DGT", rather than "DGT SE", like every other SE model.
I just watched this a second time. My take away this time isnt related to the gear at hand. Ive always detected a heavy similarity in your playing to someone elses. I just watched a rick beato with Marty Friedman and man I think thats what was gnawing at my brain. Its not all your playing its not even just lead but the way you bend and vibrato notes in runs that gives me Marty vibes.
I"m stuck between this guitar and the Yamaha Revstar. Leaning towards the Revstar because I had a PRS S2 Standard 24 that I sold because I never played it but I think the position of the pickups when there is 24 frets makes the guitar sound like crap and has something to do with why I never bonded with that guitar. Same with my Charvel ProMod DK24, it just didn't sound right to me and traded it for a Nick Johnston Schecter that I love.
I love your channel and all but I demoed this very guitar at GC and it was absolutely arthrosis the pickups are horrible even I can tell you were struggling with the over-the-top treble, it makes for a good mod guitar but those pickups sorry killed the thrill for me.. and doesn't any guitar playing through the fractal sound good? but not even the fractal could save this one..haha thank you for the video
Prs se have QC long way I got two Santana numbers 1 and his gold single cut N1 blow me away pickup good they're different I my replace out try think mccarty p90 & mccarty mix lollar p90 great?? Or 6 freeway switch with something new I'm not rush yet . It is a great platform . With sas, I got two original 96 other new narrow field in red they do have different tone Sas did get new pickup put in .old one were good but bass pickup was to too heavy in bass side hit amp. It's me, my ear . It sounds better with seymour duncan pH cat I has thing use lollar tron I it take off Santana gold cut . I put in them in because original pickup sounds OK they were miss something. Now lollar tron are better upgrading I like upgrading change like p90 nk hn in BRIDGE . TRY NEE THING. MY OTHER SAS narrow field omg hotrod strat pickup are different they're mix of things 3 pickup in one just rolling off volume just bit ot clean up . How you set your amp up. Roll on power at your Fingertips, you get more start fat tone . I have used Eq At first, pedal in chain programming EQ better you can shape you pickup sounds that what always Do .sometimes different pickup mix with new tone with that set up with eq. Now prs bring sas it's cool
just here to drop my obligatory 'i hate the bird inlays' comment. so they had a nice wood grain body and instead of doing something subtle and understated, they go all out with abelone bird inlays. Paul can't help himself. great playing, great sounding guitar, great review, great video, great intrro song choice. yuck birds. scallop the frets? if i was a billionaire i'd buy prs private stock and scallop the frets and chisel out any evidence of birds.

This is the first demo of the new PRS Swamp Ash SE that sounded absolutely amazing, great playing too
You were tearing it up on the Swamp Ash! Amazing amount of tonal possibilities on that guitar.👍
Those intro jam tones and riffs are so nostalgic!
Good old Mondo Rock :)

Wow great demo ! These are some very different tones coming from this PRS. Love the clever switch system.
How cool is it? You add the single coil at each position, and position 3 gives you a Strat position 5. Genius!

These SEs are really good!!!
An unbelievable performance. Unbelievably well played. And a great guitar. That was fun🎸🎸🎸👌🙂🎸

Hello, From the StateS. I'm new to your TH-cam Channel. Thanks for sharing 🎸🎶
Welcome!
You make it hard for someone to choose. But i think i will go with the SAS for my next guitar. Maybe the fact that i own a DGT help me with this decision
side by side .. the gold top DGT is such beauty :D
Good Lord that tone in the intro!!!
You just may have convinced me to get one!!
Great playing too 👍🏻
Glad to hear it! They sound great
Hi Leon, should you ever sell your Kawai RV-4 I would be very interested.

Is this sound just straight into an amp? No effects or pedals? Just swapping pickup configuration? Which amp is used in this video?

I love your channel and all but I demoed this very guitar at GC and it was absolutely arthrosis the pickups are horrible even I can tell you were struggling with the over-the-top treble, it makes for a good mod guitar but those pickups sorry killed the thrill for me.. and doesn't any guitar playing through the fractal sound good? but not even the fractal could save this one..haha thank you for the video
Never been a fan myself, kinda half way between a Gibson and Fender, not as easy to Shred as an RG but twice the price as everything.
This one definitely leans towards the Fender end of the spectrum. The SE's are priced really well.
I have se versions of all of my cores lol. Im so stupid
Really wish PRS would upgrade all SE pickups
Brand: We have a new guitar for sale.
Me: But will it Tabor..? 😏
Uncle Leon: On it.
It’s idiotic to put a 3 way switch on a 3 pickup guitar with coil splits.
Honestly I like it, pretty much perfect combo, only thing I'd change is to be able to pick just middle pickup instead of both humbuckers together
Everytime I try to say the name, it comes out as “Swamp Ass”…
🤣🤣🤣
Hey
Prs se have QC long way I got two Santana numbers 1 and his gold single cut N1 blow me away pickup good they're different I my replace out try think mccarty p90 & mccarty mix lollar p90 great?? Or 6 freeway switch with something new I'm not rush yet . It is a great platform . With sas, I got two original 96 other new narrow field in red they do have different tone
Sas did get new pickup put in .old one were good but bass pickup was to too heavy in bass side hit amp. It's me, my ear . It sounds better with seymour duncan pH cat
I has thing use lollar tron I it take off Santana gold cut . I have used Eq
At first, pedal in chain programming EQ better you can shape you pickup sounds that what always Do .sometimes different pickup mix with new tone with that set up with eq.
Imagine scalloped with no inlays at all!
@@LeonTodd if we all can't agree on inlays, then it's no inlays for all!! Better hope there are lumin inlays side dots!
bro play the fing clean tones. bad review as always
Oh poor baby, do you need mommy to tuck you in too? Lol
No one is a fan of that guitar
Just found my next guitar! I want something "Strat-ish" that isn't a Strat...perfect! 7:55 is MONEY!!!
