A Forged crank is always a good idea, but just as important is double crank keys
You know what I wanna really see Richard? A roots blower shootout!
Make every one of these companies put their money where their mouth is…
Make the blower work for it too. Not a small block, not a small big block. I’m talking 540, or 565 bbc! Make them work even harder! Only test 8-71 blowers. Show where their limit is. Not super crazy trick blowers either…
TBS 8-71 is automatically going to be 6 point Teflon and high helix… base model… So a BDS will have to be the same… Or not, if you wanna show what a say Stage 2 BDS has to offer. Then test a Littlefield 8-71. Since thats basically all Monster Jam uses…
I wanna know who makes the most efficient roots blower without going super trick. Also what their limitation is on an engine which the job is slightly more than they can or should handle… thanks! 👍🤘👏
The squirrels are innocent
Never!
@@simon_hawk5758 😂😂😂
@@thetruthspeaker1978 you speak the truth 🐿
The squirrels were framed.
But not blameless…😂
Nice work. Thanks Richard.
Nothing sexier than a Roots style blower
If you run 10.25.1 mechanical pressure then blower boost on e85, later on you can go back to pump gas and remove the blower.
Great video as always Richard. Do you have any dyno tests on a chevy 502 that can be compared to chevy 540?
I don't think so on the 502
A 6-71 is pretty small for a
496 ci engine, i run 6-71's on 360 ci engines , but an 8-71 would be more efficient.
If your using a gmc 6-71
There's 2 sizes, std. And big bore for up to 500 ci.
I just built a blown 496 with a big bore 6-71 @ 10 lbs
It makes 980 hp.
@@Obgmarine
I have several big bore case's.
Especially one with Teflon Tips .
Richard, can you show us how to install a forged rod and piston kit? Presumably balancing with the crank and new bearings as well.
Is this a standard 60 degree helix blower or 120 degree hi helix? Also what stage blower? Teflon stripped or not. Nice article but I wish they gave a bit more info. For a 500 inch motor I would think a 871 would do slightly better.
How much power do you lose running a supercharger? If you were to run a turbo on the same setup and same boost, will you make more power?
yes-see the mod ford video where I ran 4 different forms of boost
It’s not that you lose power, per se. It’s more of a parasitic loss, meaning the blower takes HP that would otherwise be used to drive the vehicle forward. The thing is, ANY blower is going to have that same parasitic loss, although roots-type are probably the least efficient. However, the gains WAY offset whatever that loss is, and (all things equal) you’ll usually see a ~50% gain in power at ~8lbs of boost.
Turbos are way more efficient because they use exhaust gases, so it’s ‘free’ power in a way. Or it’s using energy that would otherwise go to waste. Turbos don’t necessarily make more power inherently, but they can be sized way bigger if you want to tolerate lag. A turbo can spool WAY more than a blower though, and so provide more boost. There are street turbos that can push 20-40lbs, where most street superchargers aren’t going above 16-20lbs.
A roots is more for a pro street show car and adds some descent hp over NA and looks cool. A turbo set up will gain alot more but also more work to install.
You need to run a thick walled blower guys. The other ones break.
Big blocks are so playing the game on easy mode, lol.
Is there any difference in performance between a tall deck 496 and a short deck 496? I mean if the same cam, pistons, intake, headers, heads, all that doesn’t have to be different like rods would the performance be the same?
the intake would be slightly different because of the tall deck
With a blower you have pressurized air and fuel in the manifold. What if you have a backfire? Will it destroy the blower like a top fuel car, or can they take it at 5-6-7 psi of boost?
there is a burst valve
Great information, thanks..
Ironically I have a 496 that I am building a 6-71 for right now. It's for a jet boat.
Afternoon Richard. Where did you set your cam at? 0, 2 or 4 degrees a/r ? Tyia 😀

What comp. Were the piston on this blown bbc? What chamber size was heads ? Thnks. Great video 👍🏻👍🏻
near 10:1
@@richardholdener1727 Thank you. 👍🏻
Would 10.5:1 be too much compression on a 496 with a 6-71@@richardholdener1727
Question. If you were running this on methanol, would you still run 950 carbs? Also what compression was the 496?
yes and near 10:1
@richardholdener1727 would 10:5.1 be to much compression for a 6-71 on a 496
Did rich forget to use a fine spline blower and engine pulley for high rpm.
@richardholdener1727 What was the static compression on that unit and was the over driven pull still on pump gas? Thanks and I love your videos.
10:1 and not on pump gas
Thanks @@richardholdener1727
Richard , 2 things here that may assist u down the track 👣
An 871 race 🏁 blower would be much better 👌 😅 & a Roy Miersch Blower Manifold from Alchy Digger .
I stayed with Roy Miersch ( his wife Diane in 2005 ) & they really looked after me .
Unfortunately Roy passed away recently. Check them out .
Stay Blessed Robert Australia 🇦🇺 🙏 😅😅😅
Does a N/A motor with the same hp as a blower motor use more fuel per miles? Just a question in my mind. Probably the same?
na motor will typically use less under cruise-doesn't have to spin the blower
@@richardholdener1727 if you were going to build decision to run strictly on alcohol is there anything you would change with it may be going with higher compression along with the blower
It takes about 21 psi to get 1000 hp from a good 454.
Pro max hasn't been around a long time like brodix and dart. The flow numbers are good. So they say. 400 and up is good.
Hey Richard, I’m new here but I’m looking at AFR enforcer 210 heads for a boosted 5.3 ls that will be built internally. I’m shooting for 1000hp and wondering if these have ANY benefit over the 799 heads on my current motor.
AFR Enforcer 210’s will have a little more flow than the 799’s. Combustion chamber is the same on both at 64cc’s.
Flow at .600 lift is 268/207 for 210’s and 248/186 for the 799’s. More flow equals more power.
the turbo will dictate the power-you can make that with either heads
Like RH said here it’s not necessary to upgrade the Heads. As Mathew says they will make more power (na) mostly at the top the more cam you have the more it would (assuming)you have induction and supporting mods. 1000hp can be had fairly easily with cam/springs turbo on any ls. The smaller the engine the more boost they need. If 1000 is your goal then make sure your turbo can do 1200. A sure fire way to fall short of your goal is picking a 800hp turbo 😂ebay(gt45) I’m looking at you.
Thanks guys! So I don’t NEED to upgrade the heads, but I’m building the motor from a bare lc9 aluminum block so I need to buy heads anyway as I’d like to keep current motor together for something else. I have a VS gen 3 78/75 and all the fuel I need which should get me around 1k. I’m just going to spend the extra couple hundred on the enforcer heads in hopes It’ll save me a few psi of boost to get to my goals. Thanks again!
@@RP_Loke for you it’s just a couple hundo for a lot of us it’s a much bigger swing. It will do what your expecting though if you have a decent cam and your going to rev it they will help and in theory require less boost for a given output
You can only run as much boost as detonation will allow.
Alot of guys go wrong by boosting a 10.251 engine the trying it on pump gas.
Richard...what compression ratio did u have?
near 10
@@richardholdener1727 wow so it ran on boost with that much compression on pump gas. Interesting
Yes!!!!
Not all gmc blowers are the same inside.
I never understand why rich doesn't run max pump gas boost which is about 8.8 pounds.
So many guys never make much more then 1 hp per cid on a street engine on pump gas.
I've heard of 1250 on pump gas with an f3 but a 6 71 on pump gas doing 900 plus. I can see it was all at super high , limited rpms. Not good for a street car.
That is a sexy looking v8
Very few people get 976 hp on pump gas out of a 496.
At 6.8 pounds 900 plus hp. Where's the intercooler
Well you can't run a 16.1 mechanical engine and then throw 36 psi boost on it and expect it not to let go.
Bloodviking
mal blower big blower what is more efficient
When you are make some decent boost in the 15 - 20 psi range
I look at the blower rotor length below,
Lets look at a 6 and a 12
That is a 3 inch rotor lenght difference
So 20% more for a 12 than a 6.
I would think that it takes 20% more HP to turn the 12 than the 6 at the same blower speed Yes or No
But the 6 will need to spin a lot faster than the 12 to make the same amount of boost. spinning is faster wil take more HP How mutch more ??
And it will generate al lot more heat, heat is less power.
Q what is the optimal blower speed?
To slow is also a lot of loss.
blower
rotor length
6-71 15
8-71 16
10-71 17
12-71 18
14-71 19
20 PSI ON A ROOTS BLOWER IS NOT EFFICIENT
He never mentions blower rpm.
Anything past 22,000 rpm is on borrowed time.
Bloodviking
22k top Keque it’s nowhere even close to that
Can u putt on a set of older 781 heads on a 6th gen 454
WITH THE RIGHT GASKET
Carillo rods way over kill. Crazy cost.
It's hard to make 900 hp on pump gas
It was, 20 years ago. Not a big deal for a decent size engine with a power adder now.
That blower was way low on boost
928 I mean
Running that low boost is like not even having a blower. Lol
I think we all knew this
I blame good content
454 average pump gas 550 to 600 hp good heads 40 hp more for 496 200 for 8.8 pound boost, average.
How did he get 900 plus on pump gas, low boost. No intercooler for higher boost. No e85. I'm suspicious.
Bloodviking
These dyno results smell fishy
