Dave The triumph manual says to use the spanner wrenches to adjust the rear pre-load. The manual is wrong by the way as usual for Triumph! The top ring needs to be held stationary while the bottom ring needs to be rotated "counter-clockwise" 1 click for more preload. Just an FYI.... No need to use the notches.... This fixed it for me and thanks for your excellent videos!

Dave, recent subscriber. I own a Thruxton R with the stock Pirelli tire, I weigh 160 pounds. I take the bike to the drag races three or four times a year, take it to Bonneville to fo land speed racing once a year, and ride the bike pretty tamely on the streets. I am assuming the variety of these styles may require a different approach to suspension adjustments. I do lower the tire pressure 2 to 4 psi at the drag strip and raise the tire pressure 6 to 8 psi above normal solo recommended while doing land speed racing. I generally set the suspension up to the sport settings for drag and land speed racing, and slightly softer than solo for street riding per setting in book at least for the front preload. I have no idea if this correct. I think I need to learn how to fish better.
Hey Dave - great vid. I own a TTR and have found exactly what you observed on the bike - the front is very stiff and it hasn't improved after 10K miles. With full gear my riding weight is just under 200 lbs. My local tuning shop suggested I should get new cartridges and oil in the front shocks but it's a pricy job. Anything else I can do besides? If I dial-out the preload at the front it bottoms out and doesn't absorb the bumps well.
Dave, thanks for this. With the dual shocks on the rear, is it safe to assume they behave the same way out of the box or can you detect differences between them, ie are they both to be set the same way? How would a difference in behaviour between them feel to the rider?
Hi Peter - both shocks should be identical in settings so making sure they are isn't a waste of time IMHO. I want to know they are set correctly, so I will make sure. I'll do that fairly often as well. Children like to turn and twist things as do other adults.

You were entirely correct :) Every single one I've tuned has been set up to cope with that issue and in some cases for lighter riders I've lowered the front by 2-4mm as well.

Great review Dave, one in a million. As a Thruxton R owner, may I ask you a question please. See, I find that when accelerating hard at the exit of a curve, the front of the bike starts to shake from side to side and it feels too light. Tryed on different settings to solve it, turn the rear ring schocks one position more towards the stiffer position, play with the rear com, ten and rebound but nothing, the feeling is terrible. Can you please guide me on this one? Thanks for your help in advance.
Thanks for the kind words Erwin. If the shock gave you no results, the cause is most probably in the forks. Take out all the rebound, compression and preload in the forks and ride. With a cable tie in place, how much travel do you use? If you can't get anywhere near bottom out the forks need to be moved in the yokes to lower the front end by 2mm at a time. Test in simple easy stages and ;eave settings in the shock alone during the testing.
Hi Dave, On my Thruxton R, I have a raised trailing edge on my rear tyre, so I assume rebound damping needs to be increased (slowed down) How many clicks at a time do you suggest for these particular shocks? Any information is appreciated. Thanks.
If those marks are on the very outside of the tire, changes won't make a difference. If they are in the area where power is applied (flat black color), slowing rebound would be correct. You would go 2-3 clicks at a time depending on oil age.
Hi Dave, I just got one of these thruxtonRs. What is the sag I'm shooting for? I weigh 225LBS, and am trying to sort if I need stiffer springs on the rear. I have 2 grooves showing on the shocks. How many more can I go down/stiffer? As well, what do you charge for basic settings suggestions or basic remote tuning. I'm not a track rider. Regards Paul
Hi nPaul, Congrats on the Thruxton R model. Nice! Personal settings for tires, geometry and suspension are $40USD via PayPal or Venmo. Sag would be 35-40mm in the forks and 30-35mm in the rear shocks.

For preload the industry standard is to start from minimum and that is full left. The you count clockwise in turns (or clicks if you have them). You can use any increment from full 360 degree turns to 1/4 turns. Preload is setting sag first, then to optimize travel used second.
It would be good to know height of rider, not just weight and more specifically their inside leg measurement. I'm not especially tall but have long legs and find I have to slide right back on Thruxton seat in order to keep my knees in the tank cutouts! Also you hit the nail on the head when you said the fork oil was cold. I find static assessment of damping of limited value as it will behave differently out on the road at operating temperatures.
Hello Dave I You dont mind I would like to ask a question from a different subject. I have just bought a 2008 cbr1000rr with a 200 section rear tyre. I'm used to agility of 180 (i have been using pilot road 3 tyres and I do like the compound on those) Would You have a recomendation for the tyre that would have nice agressive profile with similar compound to pilot road 3 and a good longivity ;-)? thanks
190/55 is what the bike came with an are much cheaper than a 200 rear. As such, I would recommend a 190/55 or 60 (depends on the rear axle location). You cannot buy a bad tire today so in answer to your question I would suggest a Bridgestone S21 or Dunlop Q3 for agility and compound type.
Thank you! I am 5' 9" tall and 200lbs. At 6' 1" you should fit fine with the stock seat. Handle bar shape might be a bit of a challenge and you will need to lower the levers quite a bit.
Dave Moss Tuning I'm 6'0" and 260 lbs with a 32 inseam. I looked at one yesterday at the dealer. Didn't sit on it because I was filthy from work. Besides I really don't need a payment right now. Better keep on building my 77 xs650.

Dave, may I suggest using smaller tape measure? :) there're key ring size, 1 meter length.
How would you adjust the rear shocks to get the back of the bike lower? The Thruxton R is way too high in the back.

Use 5w fork oil to the same volume as stock - we have had success with this in several bikes so far.

The pre-load on those rear shocks is adjustable with two C-spanners (supplied with the bike) mate, you don't need to move down on the clips...

Funnily enough you are not far off the target weight for the bike as it is very stiff.
Goes to prove metric wins every time over imperial.
