- A heat wave is rolling in, and that means trouble for farm labour, veggie plants, and selling at the farmers market. But the harvest still must happen, even when it's hot. So Serina and Ian are trying to survive the summer farm life, and maybe not have another all nighter of work? Spoiler - the walk in cooler still isn't done, lol.

Ian and Serina of YOU CANT EAT THE GRASS feel that every small change can make a big difference to the world we live in. Every garden planted leads to a better future. We hope to inspire and motivate others to make positive changes in their lives by sharing our journey towards greater sustainability as we build our family farm. Just here to drop a comment cuz I can! 🤣👏🙌🏻💐😱👍 so happy for you guys that comments are BACK!
So am I!
Same! I was like wait what!
@@heresmything I know!
Beautiful to see y’all supporting each other
Same! So glad their comments are back! ❤
OMG the comments are back! Can't wait to try it out!
Right!
right on
You should put branding on your mason jars and bouquet, so your buyers from the market can find you direct for porch sales. Even just a stamped label with your name and Facebook page?
They usually brand the bouquets. They have a large sticker that they put on everything. I know they had a large ink stamp before too for paper bags etc.. The mason jars probably are not marked as they are new.
Maybe do a shade cloth attachment for the tent. People will definitly stop to get some shade AND look at your products
Bring a spray bottle. Or small fan mister.
I doubt there's any shade cloth left for sale in Canada.
Yes. When I go to the market in hot weather, I will NOT wait in a line with no shade.
So glad TH-cam gave you the comments back! Your flowers this year are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! Your flower arranging talent has blossomed! (See what I did there?) They have been beautiful every year but the mix of varieties this year is stunning! You guys work so hard but the end result is so worthwhile. Hope those temperatures come down a bit soon!
What happened?? Why did TH-cam shut down their comments?
@@anhle-tl8yz it had to do with TH-cam turning comments off on channels that children might watch, in order to limit their exposure to questionable comments. Unfortunately, many channels with wholesome content such as this one were affected. Until now we have been leaving comments in the community link of their channel, but thankfully TH-cam has given the comment section back.
I don't usually comment on videos but I've been following you for a while and I felt for you that these comments didn't work. You are inspiring and generous with your journey. Thank you so much for all that you share with us.
When I heard about the heat wave in canada, my first thought was: how are Ian and Serina gonna work on their farm ☹
It is so funny ...Although I dont know you personally I am rooting for you to make over 1000$ every week :)
Me too!!!
Same!
Ditto!
Yes me too. Always at the tense when they are counting and hoping that they hit that $1000.
I am also rooting for you! You both work so hard and have such great produce and flowers! All the best! 🥰
Such a surprise about those smaller flower jars, I thought they looked great! Doing over $850 is great for a 'slow' market. well done guys! great to have comments back on the channel too :D
right? i would have totally bought one.
I agree. I loved the bouquets in the jars. Hard to understand why they didn’t sell.
I think it was probably the heat 48c or 117f. That water in that glass jar was going to get pretty warm if you didn't go home right away.
I just found your site. I had no Idea you were in Canada. I live in central Washington
State and looking at your area looks a lot like our valley. I have learned several things about
Gardening from you. It is a treat to watch your family dynamics especially your huge black and white cat. Adorable.
I do a very small garden of veggies but always leave room for Zinias. I so admire your stamina and bravery.
Thank you for all your hard work, wish I would have done what your doing 50 years ago!
The okanagan is so unique, you can always spot it once you know it - I see it all the time in some Washington social media places too
I love how you are actually paying attention to sun protection! It is soooo important and I rarely see other gardening channels doing it
We have a whole video on sun safety we want to make someday
I've been lurking the channel and Instagram for the new vid. I'm new here and kind of obsessed with these market vids.
2:25 missed opportunity for a prime Dad joke: “enough dilly- dahlia’ing!”
I was thinking the same thing.
Exact same thought
Haha!!!! Love that!
Serena your bouquets were beautiful you can really see a difference between last years to this years bouquets. Not that last years were bad. There definitely is a talent to putting together bouquets and yours looked awesome. Great job at a slow market!
Those bouquets were stunning! I definitely think as a customer it’s easier to take home a bouquet than a jar with water, no worry about spilling anything!
Love these market videos. I can only imagine how much work it is to get harvests done AND film content so when I watch them I am always in awe! Beautiful farm guys! x
So kool you got comments. I have been wanting to tell you how amazing your flower arrangements look. I do a small farmers market in the states and love all the information you share. We don't plan on having as big of operation as you, but all your info has been a big help. Thanks and Happy Gardening
I LOVE how your market stand canopy is RED like RED ROOF FAMILY FARM! Nice detail.
It feels like Christmas 🎄. We can actually comment here ???? 🥰🥰🥰.
Have a great week guys.
I’m glad i discover this couple. I love to watch them. From planting harvesting and selling
We think it's such a fun process to document in a vlog
Fill every milk bottle, juice bottle and anything else you have with water and freeze in anybody’s freezer to take with you to market and put in and under your goods,we do it in Australia in the heat. Good luck 🤞
...they do this in Phoenix, Arizona too...[] :)))
Sounds like what I used to do for rabbits, too! LOL
The more ice you add to the load though the less you can take and the less money you make. Real toss up.
Hello and Greetings from Windermere, Florida zone 9b 🇺🇸
Our Summer heat is what you are dealing with. We also have humidity so we are sticky, too.
I'm 71 and gardening for over 50 years. We used to have a Chestnut and Persimmon Orchard so we understand what you are going through.
God bless you all 🌿💚🌿
Oh nice!! Comments have returned!! Your channel has inspired me to seek out more farmer's market and support them. Thank you for all your efforts.
All the bouquets were so beautiful. I wish people had more appreciation for their beauty and hard work that goes into the final product from seeds.
Great to see the comments back!!! Your bouquets and jars looked stunning. You are both an inspiration, love watching your videos! ..... I now have more flowers in my veggie garden thanks to you both 😁🌺🥦💚
Comments back!!! Serina & Ian, these are some of my most favorite videos you do! I love your week to week market prep & sale days! Im selling at our small 40ish vendor market here in the southern Missouri Ozarks and you always inspire me! ❤️ Kristy in Missouri 😃🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
You do a great job of displaying your items at market 👍
Your arrangements are getting more beautiful each summer
Coments are back, I'm happy for you guys. 😊😊
Your bouquets are so beautiful Serena, you’ve become a total pro!
Your bouquets were amazing. I love your enthusiasm
I absolutely love the way you put your flower bouquets together!
Good to see you are finding creative ways to beat the heat. Your garden, flowers and market display are beautiful! Glad it was a decent market.
Such a nice surprise to see comments available. I live in AZ and our summers are unbearable, but we run the irrigation twice a day and that’s what has helped our crops through out the summers highs in the desert.
Your markets are so beautiful! Gorgeous flowers, yummy veggies! Big beets, small beets, oh for heaven's sake! You did great - a short day, scorching hot, and nearly $900. Wow! Your videos are so very well done; this one is no exception. Thank you for the beauty!
The flowers are just stunning this week!!!!
I love being able to watch you harvest, make the bouquets, and watch how the market does every week. Thx!!
Yay, comments are back! Congratulations🍾
The flowers are absolutely gorgeous!
Woohoo, comment party! Congrats on getting them back, and for making it through this heat wave! I thought the display looked as great as ever; those display salad mix bags were super clever
Weeping with joy! I won't have to hear you explain to everyone about how you can't get the comments back! "It's not a setting!" Glad you are surviving the heat!
My husband and l have a lettuce farm close to you (Salmon Arm), and this heat has been unbearable. What we have been doing to beat the heat is starting at 6 and finishing at noon, by then it’s been unbearable already! My husband has the irrigation coming on several times throughout the day. Our cooler is struggling to keep things warm in this heat! And I’ve had to go back to our farm in the evening (we don’t live there....yet! We’re moving in at the end of July) to water all our seeding for succession plantings.
It has been a rough late June. So many record high temperatures. I hope you get some cooler weather soon. Long hours and in this heat❤
Those bouquets are BEAUTIOUS!!!!! great job!!!!
Yay for comments! Those mason jar flowers look amazing, but maybe ppl didn't want to carry them while walking around the market? I'm always awestruck at how hard you guys work on this farm! Thanks for sharing everything!
Woo comments! I love your channel. I’ve been saying you can’t eat the grass for years. We live on a small city lot and I’ve been growing a mix of flowers and veggies and it’s amazing what you can grow in a small space. Keep it up, I love the inspiration!
I have been waiting for this episode! We are just South West of you across the border, it was 106F! Many of my plants are fried, so sad. Hope it was better for you guys and Yay comments!
Dont give up. Mother nature is a cruel "beeeep" but keep on keeping on. Take your strength from those awful earwigs. We spray and exterminate and spray and attempt to crush them bad boys BUT here they are greater in number than ever and hardier than I've ever known. Ugh!!!!
If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I pray I return as an earwig or... an ant! Ha ha ha ha ha
Great job! Your day total is really good! For such a warm day, that is a lot of sales.
Love your flower arrangements! Good job!
It’s so amazing watching them do all this, they are my stress busters. Lots of 💐💐💐💐💐from me to both of you 😘😘
Respect guys! I just love following you. I am a fanatical gardener. You take the professionalism to a whole new level.
Love the bouquets you make!! They’re all so gorgeous!!
Whaaaaat? Comments? This is so great! I found you guys a few months ago and went back and binge watched/listed while working. Such a great family and channel. Love what you guys are doing and all that you share. ❤
The bouquets last year were lovely, but they're looking absolutely spectacular this year, well done. The mason jar arrangements are gorgeous too, although I imagine the practicalities of carrying/transporting them might be putting buyers off. I'm so jealous of the cherry trees!
You guys are the real deal farmers!☺️
comments hooray. it is nice to have a community to ask questions or comment the amazing progress.
oh que bueno puedo dejar comentario..I LOVE YOUR style SERENA and how you explain things so glad I have a chance to tell you now ....
Congrats on your beautiful farm! You are an inspiration. 🍃
So happy that the comments r on. Love you guys 🧚♂️Love ur channel too💕 from S. India
I know. I feel the same. They R such dedicated people. Stay well my friend. Lets grow something!!!
Hi serina and ian! Love ur channel! Thank God u got ur comments back. U guys r working so hard and I always prays for u guys to have successful market day every week. Serina ur bouquets r gorgeous I wish I could buy one.
Those late nights of harvesting was incredible! The dedication you guys have is amazing! Stay hydrated and hopefully your harvest will do well even in the heat. Your vegetables always look fantastic!
Your bouquets are beautiful! I just stumbled on your channel bc I was looking for zinnia info and now I have a whole new appreciation for those who work the farmers markets and the whole process of preparing for them. Thanks for sharing!
We get comments?! Yes!! Super excited to see your channel grow even more like it deserves🌿🌸
Yeah comments!. I love living vicariously through the both of you.
Love your channel. I am very small scale but one thing that helped me during hot summer southern days is selling homemade lemonade. Mixed it up sometimes strawberry or cherry lemonade.
Just want to say that I always enjoy seeing your flower arrangements. I wish I could purchase one every week!
Please be careful in the dangerous heat! I love the bouquets in the mason jars.
Oh, lmbo, I just did the research and can see that youtube was screening your calls (brief comment ban) to disallow the haters and scammers. Good on ya mate!
And I think you can increase your prices just a tad as EVERYTHING else in the world increased 88% this last year!
Keep on growing!!!
Wow, you did well for the heat! I wouldn’t be out at a market in 40degree C.
Girl….Your bouquets are gorgeous ….you’ve come along way in design.
Loved those jars. Bummer they didn't sell!
Shocked at how hot it is now in Canada. Of all places! Probably feels extra awful for all of you up there, who aren't ready for it. Hope it doesn't come with humidity too.
Loved the shorter stem jars arrangements, but can see why someone would be leery of buying something that could spill in their car on a sharp turn.
Amazed the outdoor lettuces aren't melting. Suppose it cools off enough, still, at night there to give them a break. Often read about cooler night, even as fast as evening, temps up north. Hope those bagged greens worked out for market.
I can't imagine lettuce here in June, much less July. Was impressed when the most heat resistant lettuces were working to make leaves this year in May, but it has been an unusually cool year here, in general. (Most years cool weather greens go directly from sprout to thin bolting stem, May to late Nov., even in the shade.) Definitely agreeing with other comments about finding a shade cloth extension for the market, if this is something that might happen again.
Yay for comments being back on! Congratulations!
Was the lettuce packaging well received? Really a good solution!
I love watching you arrange flowers. 💐 thank you
I’ve waited like 9 months to say I love your channel!! So glad the comments are back!!
Love your energy Serena. I watch these long videos from beginning to end. During dishes, folding laundry. I just love how real you guys are. Crazy eyes Ian!
Whoop! Whoop! I am soooo happy for you guys! I can comment on your actual video!! You are both amazing to watch!!
Yes! Comments are turned back on!I love watching you guys, so helpful in my gardening here in Minnesota🌻🌻🌸🌺💐🥒🥕🥬🍒🍓
Fantastic that the comments are back! If you have the enclosed space for your walkin freezer, maybe try freezing a bunch of water gallon jugs and place them in your space to chill it. Can also place frozen gallon jugs in water in your rooms of your house, especially if there is a fan to place the bucket in front of.
Hello from Sonoma County California. I love your channel. I find it inspiring, informative, relaxing and entertaining. Our hearts go out to you as you deal with the extreme weather and fire danger. I see that your town is now hosting the fire refugees from burn areas. Here in our town we have had to do the same, more times than we wish to count. I wish you physical and emotional strength during this time. Also, I look forward to your posts, when you feel it’s the right time. This year I have Rubdeckia,Chocolate Coreopsis, Bee Balm, Tithonia,Dahlias, etc all in a bed that was previously covered by a layer of ash , black leaves and even scorched pieces of paper with readable text on it. Spring will happen again, it will.
Thanks for the nice comment. It was so hot here, just down the road from us got hotter than las Vegas highest recorded temperature, it was actually quite scary and sad and I feel it inside, but it strengthens my resolve to make content that sends a message that I feel is important, in supporting local sustainable farms or growing your own food.
Omg, comments! What a great result despite the heat! Well done guys! Please take care of yourself, this working through the night is not sustainable for that long.
Hey guys I just love everything you do especially the flowers you guys are very inspirational and positive example to all God bless
Yay for comments! Flowers are looking amazing! I’m so inspired I’m planting flowers that I can pick and arrange for my house now.
Another thought as I watched the end...flowers in a jar was a great idea..if not selling, in stead of scrapping the idea, try to add more value on...my idea is this...to find a way to decorate the jar and to present it more as a product and not table decor that some might have thought if it..also..buyers may not want to walk around market holding a water sloppy and heavy item...so...
To dem my idea but not saying this is what you should do..imagine a colorful macrame-like or knotted basket, dressing up your jar and that can be hung off your gazebo and not be part of table display...doubling up as a carry holder for your patrons..made of bright coloured nylon rope...maybe with a contrast ribbon woven through..something quick and simple to make. Last thought something to hold water at bottom of jar to keep water level down but still make flowers happy. Rooting for ya to succeed on every level.
Wow it's so great to see you have commenting back! Well done for harvesting in such crazy heat and some pretty decent sales too! Hopefully it only gets better from here!
You guys have got it going ON.... AMAZING.
Yes! Finally your comments are back👏😍
Thank you for all the entertaining videos, but really THANK YOU for all the invaluable information you’ve shared!
What!?!?! WHAT!?!? COMMENTS ARE BACK!!! WHOOOHOOOO!!! it's about dang time! Lol glad TH-cam finally gave them back to yall!! I've been selling my Mason jar arrangements for $20 and they do pretty well. I've got dahlia envy!! Mine are not blooming yet. Hope the heat wave didn't hurt anything on the farm!
Seeing your piles of snow and then 40 degrees C makes me love UK weather. 20 degrees constant most of summer.
Also you should probably up the price on carrots if they sell out that quick every time?
Pretty standard for carrots to fly off the shelves at a market. Plus no one wants to pack that stuff back up and take it home.
Happy to see you are surviving in the heat wave, always wanted to suggest you check out Honey Tree Farm, they have a salad spinner they made from an old washing machine, allows them to speed up that part of the salad cleaning process
we put deep freezer on our truck an freeze it an turn off an load for market..an pull from it only as things sell..at 100* day's our stand stays fresh all day.we line the bottom with frozen water an cover the freezer with a silver Thermo blanket to keep the sun off freezer though out the day
Such a good idea!!
Stunning floral work - work work work! Well done.
Love your content. Please consider doing a video on types of fertilizers you use for both flowers and veges. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much and family members and friends so much Serina and lan and a lot of videos show me to America today and Tomorrow
hope your farm is surviving the week! keep us postedddd
Your bouquets are STUNNING this week!!!
Finally the comments are back....love how you display at the farmers market...cute cute cute
Yay comments! Party time 🎉 🥳 Bouquets are gorgeous. If I lived nearby I would have come buy some! Our summers regularly hit 40°C 😭, hope you guys get relief from the heat soon!
I am following you from Norway. I am so glad that comments came back!
You crack me up coolest unique personality person ive met in thirty yrs...so happy I found this channel today. My god are those flowers beautiful and im not a flower girl.
Wonderful to be able to give you comment, just to say thank you for such nice videos 💚
