    I've been obsessed about the importance of simple shapes in making great drawings. The anatomy grind has proven to be impossible to get over. Now I want to use more symbology/iconography to make interesting images and characters. I hope it works out.

    Don’t mind me just taking notes
    + Psychology is the primary element to appeal
    - Variety of different things makes things interesting therefore more appealing
    - Frame is always your first shape to work with
    - Contrast between the spaces is what creates variety within the frame
    - Good foundation but bad house is always better than good house with bad foundation
    - Using extremes is also good way of making it more organic/interesting
    O O O . O O (noticed the dot?)
    - Don’t be afraid to be general, block in what you want, frame and angle view
    - Look around! Even a pill has some things going on in terms of design
    - Fundamentals rule!

    Missed your tutorial videos dude, always glad to see more!
    Like, really, lately I watched and rewatched a lot of your videos, especially when you just sketching poses and faces with any kind of thought flow on the background. You said that you consider yourself more like analytical kind rather than intuitive when it comes to drawing, but somehow just about 10 minutes me watching you drawing makes me feel a lot freer with drawing human figure. Your character style is awesome, your lightness with drawing sketches is so great it’s make me feel like I’m starting draw better just after looking for a while how good you handle all this stuff. Please keep doing things you do!

    Young artists should really concentrate on composition first. Detail is nice but furnishings won't make up the bricks of a house. Shapes and their placement are the first things to concentrate on. Get them down on thumbnail drawings first, tie them down and then worry about details later. Great video Sycra. Love your work.

    I was inspired to try and consciously work on my composition after watching this and automatically saw improvement in my art. I have to admit it hurts my brain to think about it rather than just go in there on a canvas and start drawing, but thinking abought composition really helps- thank you!
    You mention Kienan having a similar video, do you happen to have a link to it? Can't seem to find it :C

  • @adwityas7572

    Would it work with the comic panels as well?

    • @TheMusicalString
      @TheMusicalString 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Krish Phoenix I would say definitely! Each panel is its own frame and composition, and together they create a composition for the whole page. Using shape design can really help you sell the story.

    9:09 Question: when you draw with "clear" background (let's say for like sticker or iron-on-patch designs, where what is behind it can vary wildly from the original square shape of a canvas) where there is no inherent border, should you still consider the backer/canvas shape as the first shape, or do you just ignore it entirely?

  • @lemonyapples

  • @punkandrockgirf
    @punkandrockgirf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have a question. I've been having problems conveying weight in my characters. They look weightless, and dont seem to fit in with the environments I draw them in. The perspective of the person is always a little bit off to the background, and they end up floating somehow. Or I'd draw them to be very heavy/husky, but my lines make them so that they aren't perceivably heavy. How can I fix this?

    • @sohaibnk
      @sohaibnk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest rendering you're characters, shading them will add mass...also posing your characters (weight distribution of characters) can help as well

    • @starspawn507
      @starspawn507 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Draw the background first, then fit them in it. This makes it easier to make them fit into it effectively. Using perspective to gauge their height would probably help with sizing. Also, stuff like shadows on them or made by them would make them look like they’re actually there.
