    I have used all the Pontus II inputs simultaneously. A remote to switch between all of them to make easier comparisons would have been awesome. I absolutely loved my Pontus and I miss it sometimes but the remote did play in my decision on moving on and moving away from Denafrips (still have my little Ares in the bedroom lol)
    So all in all I agree with your assessment, and on the remote part too. Having tried all inputs I don’t agree on optical though, my favorite by far is i2S. BNC and AES were a tie for me. If someone has a node as a streamer and uses coax, I would say that it is 95% of the BNC and i2S. I tried it with the Node and Node 2i, ifi Zen Stream and Pi2AES. The “old” Node 2i was the best bang for the buck. I kept one as a streamer only. In my system and beats all the other ones in terms of wide soundstage, even the new Node.
    Hope that feedback can be useful for someone looking into one of those .

      I2S is certainly better than toslink, but most components have a toslink and not an I2S, hence why I think there should be more toslink connections. It's just my opinion though. To each their own.

    FWIW-- From 'WHAT HI*FI' "If it’s a straight choice between coaxial and optical, we’d go for the former. In our experience, a coaxial connection tends to produce better audio quality than optical, allowing for a higher level of detail and greater dynamics."

    In this particular video, when you say the Pontus II. Is overkill for your system, I understand you kept the Buchardt S400 mk2 hooked to a better Hegel Amp. So am I right to assume that the S400 mk2 are revealing enough? If this is the case, what type of an amp would you say is "good enough" for the Pontus II?
    Thanks, have a great day.

    • @thevinylattack
      @thevinylattack  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Buchardts did very well with the Pontus, but the Alyssa's were a step up. There are so many good amps out there it'd be hard to name them all, but I'd fathom a guess that you'd probably want something around double the price of the Pontus. The Rotel RA-6000 would probably be a good start.

I’m always thinking of songs and when I do I can’t wait to hear how it’s going to make the songs sound . All I’d say about tweaking is use manufacturers settings (Audirvāna can do this automatically) and slow filter for anything not classical and sharp filter for classical. I love rock music out of it I just want to open a bottle of wine and get crazy when I hear it. Hey although it's a good idea to review this DAC using toslink it should also be said toslink is not its strong suit, AES and especially I2S are the best inputs. Also it's good you use the entry level node to stream as that's what most people will use, but it should be said this limits the DAC ultimately. Finally it would be more useful for your subs to have another similarly priced and well known DAC on hand to do an a/b comparison. IME everything that comes before the DAC from the wall including cables affect the DAC's performance particularly with streaming versus local files on one's NAS for example. I know you are vinyl/analog focused, but you will definitely gain new subs if you address these kinds of points I raise when reviewing digital gear.

    • @thevinylattack
      @thevinylattack  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Bluesound can send the same high res digital information as any other higher end streamer so I wasn't worried about that. Being that I'm not a digital guy, the AES and I2S aren't something I have around the house. While I very much enjoyed this DAC, it will also be the last digital review for quite some time. I'm just not into the format as much.

      @@thevinylattackI was surprised by this as well TBH. From a jitter perspective, coax should be the much superior interface (though apparently you can get special multi conductor toslink cables that try to address that). You do of course gain galvanic isolation, that eliminates noise transfer and issues with ground potential, which would be a valid concern for someone like me that mixes and matches components with and without a ground pin and connects them up using rca/unbalanced. I do believe I get superior results using a a high quality coax source with a good digital cable (1.5 meters). I try to get around issues with ground potential by running all my gear off of a single plug in the wall and making sure the polarity of the power is sorted (anyone who thinks this is BS can come over and listen to the difference in transformer hum and borrow my potentiometer to measure the different in potential between the casings of my units 😉)

    Just bought the pontus II used, I spent a lot of time on reviews, even listened to a friends system that has it.. now I just went through listening to some of my key reference pieces and I am not impressed.. It's boring, the soundstage has shrunk, I'm losing details, too silky and wishy washy.. compared to the 10yr old, $300 Maverick D1 Tubemagic I've had since new I expected it to take my system up a level, it's the opposite.. Maybe it'll work better on someone elses system?

      Without trying to be an argumentative jerk, I don't believe any $300 product from any era can perform better than the Pontus.

      Have you come around to the Pontus? I had the Ares II and I never warmed to it, finding my 10 year old £500 Rega DAC superior in every way (sound stage, imaging, flow, tonality, musicality, sounding less digital and hazy). I am still considering if I received a “dud” and giving a used Pontus a chance.. I mean, that many people cant be wrong can they? 😅

      I have a good laugh every time I see people talk about just which speaker cables and interconnects and power cables they had used with the equipment that's being reviewed. Many of them aren't well versed in electrical engineering. That's why the Audioquests and Kimbers of the world aren't bankrupt.

      my dac (1.5k$) was handwired for me by the designer .it's called border patrol se i made in usa with a nos rectifier tube. you will get more resolution from denafrips but sigma delta will bring you even more resolution so what? it's all about the T O N E. and it takes people with ears that care in order to get there it's not random it's not luck, it takes quality components and denafrips figured only that part and combined it with mediocre design ,ugly look ,the result: slightly over bright sound that lacks bass but hey... if it's not good enough there will always be the next model.
