    VERY useful video. Not going over what has already been reviewed many times, but concentrating on the matching of each DAC to a specific system is an excellent approach. Thanks.

    Thanks for the info and advice you give, it's well appreciated. Also I totally understand what you are saying about price point on audio equipment. People should understand that 1 high end component is not going to take you directly to the next level without out the other pieces of the puzzle like speakers, amps, wires and cabled . But there's no shame in owning a budget system especially if it makes you happy.

    This approach is actually super helpful. A lot of reviewers say something along the lines of "you can check your audiophile boxes. Soundstaging, imaging, detail, it's all there." Which is not super helpful if you have no idea what a product at that price point is supposed to sound like. Especially considering they'll say the same thing about a product in a different tier, tacking on the "for this price point"!

    Really dig this new approach or angle. If we come away from any review 1) trusting your observations and conclusions, and 2) having a good understanding and appreciation for the character and performance of any audio product it is a fantastic video. This video format did all of that and “took it to another level.” 😉 It made me think about the systems I have, and maybe even rethink upgrade priority. Your message is also that Denefrips is
    a solid choice at any level. What I found almost the most useful is that the entry Denefrips DAC is much better than the Blusound DAC. (Your Comparisons are so helpful) Thanks bro! And yeah… throw in that ending every once in awhile! 💪🏽🎶🥊🔥🙏🏽🎵

    Well, after much deliberation and being just inches away from a Venus II, and then a Kitsune Spring 3, and then a Terminator II, I pulled the trigger on a Gustard R26. 😉 What can I say, I'm a cheapskate. Super impressed with Aoshida, I ordered on Thursday and it was here Wednesday. That's faster than some CONUS orders - and no CA sales tax which I'd have paid through Amazon or eBay. The finish isn't _quite_ as nice as my Aurender, but looks great sitting next to it. It's exciting that something this well stuck together with quality parts is available for under $2k. That just means the big boys will have to up their game. So far, I'm just floored at the performance which seems to have the best qualities of a SABRE and R2R right out of the box. My new phono stage and PS is here Friday, so it'll be entertaining to have an analogue vs digital showdown over the weekend. Too bad my carts still need breaking in. 😕

    Excellent and thorough analysis! I have both the Ares 2 and Pontus 2, with a Denafrips Hermes DDC feeding the Pontus via I2S for all digital sources. Hermes has more different types of inputs than the Iris, so I can hook up CD transport, streamer, and TV for improved sound. It has proven to be an excellent combination. Considered the Venus, but ended up going with Pontus plus DDC for practically the same money. The Hermes DDC reclocks all the inputs using an even higher quality clock (OCXO) than what is found in the Venus, so hopefully overall I'm close to or exceeding what the Venus alone would have offered me... The rest of my system includes the Denafrips Athena preamp and Apollo amp driving Tekton double impacts. Insane performance!

    If you can, avoid the incremental upgrades; you’ll save money in the long run. After wanting to try something better than the Bluesound DAC streamer I went for the Ares II but should’ve gone directly to the Pontus II. Would recommend bypassing the Iris and getting the Hermes so you’ll have multiple inputs, if you’re considering a DDC.

    Alvin told me the same, get the Pontus II... I went with the Ares II. What got me thinking about upgrading my Ares II, was purchasing a $249 R2R Cayin RU6 dongle DAC... It walked all over the Ares II. The bass was deeper, so much so I had to turn down my SVS SB3000 subs from -10db +/- to -30db +/-. The soundstage is bigger, and instrument separation and tonality is off the wall. I used a TRRS to XLR cable to hook into my preamp, the Denafrips Hades out to the Thallo amp, feeding a pair of Model 5's. I hope the Pontus II 12th will sound as good. ;-)

      @NemoPropaganda  ปีที่แล้ว

      if you went from 10db to -30dB on your sub settings from a dac change something is seriously wrong. You're essentially saying a dac caused a 40dB swing, something is broken here.

      @michaelwright1602 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NemoPropaganda Hmmm... The Ares II having issues I never knew about? And 20db swing, not 40.
      Where are your settings in regards to volume on your REL subs and the Ares II? Curious on your settings though, and I am assuming you are feeding the Rels via the speaker outputs vs RCA?
      I know from researching this RU6 dongle DAC, that everyone that has compared it to the Ares II have all said there was a dramatic boost to the bass, along with the instrument separation and larger soundstage. And that is my experience too. I wish they made a desktop version, I would simply purchase it and call it a day.

    Well, listening to my Venus II 12th right now... Been playing with it for days. I am using the Pi2 Mercury V2 streamer, all hard wired into my network. I am using the outstanding and rock solid RoPieeeXL OS on the Mercury. Cables do matter with this combination, and I am sure others. I found Gotham digital cables, AES and RCA, beat the snot out of both Mogami and Audioquest Cinnamon. I think I paid around $30 for the Gotham AES on Amazon. i2s, I called Tarun, The British Audiophile, asked which cable he is using, the British made QED HDMI cable is what he is using. I found the US distributor, $40, really opened up the sound and no more bloated bass. I am using an Oyaide Black Mamba v2 power cable, direct from Japan. No clue if it makes a difference, I heard no difference over the Pangea cords I have, but it looks cool. Hope this helps someone.

    It’s good for viewers to latch onto reviewers that are in the approximately same neighborhood of funding as they are; all of the pieces work together and it does no good to be top heavy on one component and way lower level on another. Sometimes instead of buying a $3k DAC or $1k cables you probably should get every piece to a comparable quality/resolution level, like maybe better speakers. An exception I think is if you’re committed to going substantially higher up the line it’s OK to leapfrog ahead a few levels, because you’ll save money in the long run by not buying/selling at a loss/buying one step up.

      @@NemoPropaganda Ahhhh, I see, that's makes perfect sense. Would you say the Ares is the best DAC in that price range for my Magnepan LRS+? I'm also considering the Schiit Gungnir, thoughts?

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scottroberts4551 @Scott Roberts I havn't heard the gungnir specifically but based on talking with other reviewers a lot of the Schiit dacs are more on the side of clarity while the denafrips dacs are more ont he side of warmth and tone. My system already had tons of clarity and what I was missing was some warmth so for me the Ares2 dac certainly was the best choice under $1000 but if someone else was using a prima luna amp with some buchardt S400 they may instead prefer going with the more clarity focused dacs like D90, Schiit, SMSL, etc.... As far as "big difference" I believe I've already answered that question in my first response.

    I don’t really understand the DAC thing. Doesn’t your pre amp have a good DAC? How do you bypass DACs already in equipment?

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some preamps have internal DAC but many do not. Dac will go between your digital source and preamp/integrated amp.

      @@NemoPropaganda but how do you bypass if the preamp has one already?

    • @Sunshine_Superman
      @Sunshine_Superman ปีที่แล้ว

      Analogue out (RCA/XLR) from the external DAC connected to the analogue input of the pre-amp will bypass the internal DAC on the pre-amp.
      On a CD transport, for instance, digital out to pre-amp will utilise the pre-amp onboard DAC to do the decoding. Digital out to external DAC and then analogue out to the pre-amp will mean the external DAC is doing the decoding and passing the converted signal to the pre-amp.
      Internal DAC's on pre-amps/integrateds are usually a compromise (depending on your price point) and a stand alone DAC can offer more. Really depends on how resolving your system is to get the benefit. Pretty much as Nemo. said.

    Thats the problem. Denafrips limit performance significantly to a price point. I know from experience. Whereas, a good Delta Sigma chip based DAC (non ladder DAC) will for $1500 - $2000 to my ears outperform the ladder DAC.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think that's true, I think the cost to manufacture is what limits performance to a certain price point. If you enjoy DS DAC that's okay, everyone has their preference. Some people prefer tube amps, some people prefer class A, some people like CD players and other people like vinyl. It doesn't mean one thing is better or worse, just personal taste in how you enjoy things.

    To my knowledge, for those interested in Denafrips be aware they have NO return policy. I also had sync issues with the Ares 2 optical connection. They only inform you about this in the FAQ’s so buyer beware! It should be noted, I was easily able to sell the unit, but it was an inconvenience non the less.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  ปีที่แล้ว

      that is a very general statement and not not entirely correct. Out of the 3 dacs i've tested only Ares2 was unfit for TV use. Pontus2 and Venus2 did not have any delay or lipsync issues but these dacs are purist pieces so I don't imagine many people will use them for TV use anyway as there is no remote. I generally suggest users to buy a cheap dac like Modi for TV use that way you can change to that input from your remote. As far as no return policy their products sell for almost full price on the used market like ebay so I think it's a very low risk purchase.
