The JTM (ST20) sounds pretty, but also restrained - even when it's at its limit. It definitely got that Fender Tweed thing going on - a great amp for e.g., a blues rock trio. However, with the Plexi (SV20) all that restraint is no longer there. It still has sweet cleans but there's more upper midrange and that creates a bite that the ST20 doesn't have. That's also why it'll be heard even in a crowded mix. The beauty of it is that this bite can be very carefully dosed by adjusting the bright channel with respect to the normal channel. The 3-band EQ and presence controls definitely do something but it's not too much - nice for fine-tuning, that's it.
Well, the 1987 and 1959 „Plexi“ have a 4n7 bright cap, while the JTM had a 100pF bright cap. There’s a number of other design differences, but the bright cap alone makes 80% of the difference in my opinion. Put both into one Plexi-like design, and make them switchable, and you will be close to both worlds in one box. Still - nice one!
@@Nightryder7 what we can do is put the both caps on a push pull switch and pull it out to make the 100pf and push in for 4n7 I would have to refer to a tech to see if it's possible but I believe it is, if anyone wants to correct it, I would appreciate it
@@craigshewchuk9018I added a simple 3-way switch to mine, providing zero, 4n7 and 100pF. A very simple mod everyone can do (given you know how to deal with tube amps in a secure way).
When turned up all of the way, as I think they had in this comparison, the bright cap would not make much of a difference, if at all. The tonal effect of the bright cap rolls off as the volume is increased.
Purchased the Slamurai and ST20 based on this video. I tried a Mesa California Tweed back in June and it was HEAVENLY. After hearing videos comparing it to others, it sounded very thin…but the ST20 seems to blow it out of the water all around! Fender-esque cleans and British crunch! Exactly what I’m looking for! Thanks for making my decision easy!
Hi Kris and Guillaume and thanks a lot for doing this one! You guys are always fun and your videos showcase the gear in a very meaningful context. And the playing is always a pleasure. Both the LP and strat sound really beautiful through the ST. Much more suitable for a strat bridge pup IMO. That said, the Plexi will always stay THE sound of rock'n'roll for me🤘 Cheers!
Switching between these ones would pretty much be my ultimate amp setup ! Back when I had a Ceriatone JTM45, I was considering a 50w Plexi for that exact reason. And now I have a Studio Vintage. Hmmm...dangerous ideas !
Wet dry rig? I have one ready 2061x and a Fender DRRI. The new JTM might be a nice addition if I want to mix it up a bit. Tbh the Deluxe Reverb when cranked with the treble at 8 and the bass at 2,5 doesn't sound too far away from the JTM20..
The Plexi is unique because it gives an ABUNDANCE of tone. Why is this important and different? It freaking allows you to run your guitar knobs at 5 instead of ten. Then you get leeeway on both sides of the knobs. Fwiw at volume the bright cap on plexi is fully engaged. If you run the amp at 8 loudness, jumpered then guitar volume at 3 or so and tone knob to your liking…you can get a lot of these incredible, controlled tones and then an instant BOOST for leads. This is why the SV20 is special. You can do so many things if you stop just thinking of everything at 10 or only using the amp volume. And if that’s not the ticket, throw the same tubes in as the ST20 since it’s cathode biased. Easy peasy That being said, I’d love to have the ST20 in a heartbeat and be able to jump between both the SV and ST
14:13 - Sounds good this little JTM20 but in composition to SV20… SV20 is the winner. I have all other 3 studio amps, but I guess this time I’ll pass this 20W. 😅
Great video! Thanks!. It sounds awesome. This amp sounds like a JTM45, no doubt. Also remember the Vintage Modern models sound. GREAT! New Marshall amp release.
Damn it Marshall, I was always like I wish they did the JMT studio version. I literally ordered SV20 plexi from thomann and two days later they released this baby. This thing sound amazing, I wish this was released one week earlier :D
I actually consider JTM's to be in the plexi category. I have a JTM50 with the 'plexi' faceplate. Great cleans, can get almost as nasty as a 69' or even a 70's metal panel.
Great video! BTW I bought that db wall meter for my studio (that everyone uses) and it only has "A" weighting. Looks like yours does too. "A" weighting was designed for measuring car interiors (if what I read was correct)... and that it does not read much bass at all since road rumble is not what they want to measure. Huge roll off... so for music it really is not accurate. We need a meter with "C" weighting. I can't find a wall meter that has it yet. Thanks
I didn't buy the Amp and i don't plan on it but I did buy the 2 by 12 JTM studio cab . I love closed back 2 by 12 s and this one is loaded with 2 Cremaback Ms with is one of my favorite speakers so when I saw the JTM 2 by 12 had Creamback Ms I couldn't resist. I have a speaker/cab addiction

“Baby, I compare you to a kiss from an amp on the gray”. Noone has ever played that song so epic at 107db in an intro. god daaaamn. Edit: Jimi would be proud of you guys. May the gods of fuzz be with you.
plexis are basically the effe around and find out sound. definitely a harder amp to use and play. and mistakes cant be hidden. the plexi can be pulled back to sound a little more tame however, so it doesnt have to smack you in the face on every note that JTM 45 is way smoother and pleasant as a standalone sound. this comes from someone that has an SV20 and HW 1959 SLP
Really nice. Would like to hear it compared to the Sovtek Mig 50. Because, similar family tone. But with the Sovtek you get more clean headroom and power. But, you lose on the effects loop, don't have powers scaling or master volume, on a very loud amp, and is a bit more cheaply built. The Marhsall sounds like it has a more vintage character baked in. Very pleasant, but it's a character amp, where the Sovtek might be more of a neutral all-rounder? The fact that the Marshall doesn't have a master volume is no big deal, since you can control the volume, with a volume pedal at the end of the effects loop, before the return into the power amp. So, an effects loop on a no-master volume amp is a big plus point. Probably sells the JTM to me, since I have a VOX AC30 for squeekier clean cleans.
110dB…..so not at all suitable for Home / Garden Room use? Gather 5W mode would be more practical from that perspective. Looking at small head and speaker options for Garden practice room. Nothing mini about that amp. I just ordered one with the 2x12 cab earlier today. Just watching more videos now. Probably won't have it until October. Can't wait.
Lovely playing by you guys and the new JTM mini sounds awesome. My choice over the Plexi and perfect for studio, home and small gig use. I love it.Congrats on a great review.
Well... If you want to use a 20W tube amp at home you might want to get a power attenuator. As you've seen in the video, this is really fast at (and over) 100dB. If you use a Two Notes Captor X between the head and the cab though, you're safe and you can actually turn the amp up. 👍 //Kris
