Hi guys just a heads up I did use Desmume for the DS, as Drastic is the DS Emulator for Android. Just a small mistake I wanted to point out. Drastic is a great Emulator, but Desmume isn't that great in all honesty. Also I have replied to around 20 comments about the shadow in MGS1, if you watch the video you'll notice it says that it is a recording issue ;D
+DanteTheUltimate: MelonDS is gradually getting better, which could be a great thing for emulation, really there are very limited ways to improve a 3D DS Game due to the amount of clever tricks they used to make them look as good as they did.
No wiiu/Xbox 360/PS3 emulation attempted? Yeah it's early days but wiiu emulation is getting close to being perfect in a lot of games and 360 and PS3 both have a few games playable at 4k
But Desmume can run in 4K, so why didn't you use that? DQ9 actually looks great at higher resolutions because it didn't use many 2D sprites. Okami den is another DS game that can look amazing.
Dolphin has come so far. I remember when most games were only half playable and crashed after an hour or so of game-play 8-9 years ago and high definition audio wasn't even an option for the majority of titles. Man - look at it now. 4K rendering and all. Nice video :)
PS3 has come so far in the past year, and there are some titles where it is feasible on higher end hardware. But it's going to take a long time to get to the point the gamecube and wii emulation is at.

+OzTalksHW I think even more impressive is that the Wii U emulator Cemu enhanced so much just last year. A year ago, it was basicly impossible to play any game on 1080p with a GTX 1080 GPU. Now it is possible to play Mario Kart 8 on 4K with my GTX 760 and 1050Ti. The strange thing is that I can run Wii U games much smoother and better on even a higher resolution than most Wii games.

Nuclear_ Creeper37 probably, but we're getting into the realm of diminishing returns. Higher resolutions will get less noticeable whilst consuming more computing resources. This year's most arguably successful platform was Nintendo switch because stellar software was prioritised over graphics

Well, no, technology evolved quite a bit in just those 6 years. The best example off the top of my head is IBM compatibles going from using 386s, to 486s, to Pentium processors. You NEED to redo the Dolphin section with texture updates. Games like New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Galaxy have 4k resolution packs out there, and they are very much worth talking about.
It's more about the HUD, font, and menu textures for me, it HAS to be full resolution. If the thing you're looking at the entire game and looking at the most is blurry because of bi-cubic up-sampling it bugs the hell out of me. The textures on 3D objects don't bother me nearly as much.
To each their own. You are so right about the rendering in SMGalaxy 2 btw. It doesn't need the gfx packs at all for all the 3d stuff. New Super Mario felt a bit dated with how low resolution the textures looked though. And Wind Waker's cell shading still looks great as well. That game will never not look good.
Controls are a bit less tight in MGS2 because the actual ps2 controller has pressure sensitive buttons and its actually super important for MGS because you light press the buttons to aim and full press to shoot, but in the emulator there is no middle ground. You can actually get pressure sensitive buttons to work with a PS3 controller though and the correct drivers.
I can recommend running F-Zero GX at 4K. In my opinion it's graphically the most advanced GameCube game which looks better than most Wii games. It also has a build-in widescreen mode

“This is the original 480p. Now this is what it looks like in 4K. So much better, right?” Me, watching a 720p video on a 1136 × 640 phone screen: oh wow
The 3DS GPU isn't that far from PS2. Based on Metal Gear Solid 3, 3DS can handle PS2 assets/games fairly well albeit at a lower resolution. Meanwhile Resident Evil: Revelations on 3DS looks arguably better than any PS2 game thanks more modern effects PS2 couldn't duplicate. Dragon Quest 8 has simplistic graphics and that translated to 3DS fine. But bear in mind the PS2 is running it at a higher resolution than 3DS.
0:20 Just commenting on this small bit. Can I ask if others feel the same way, that old games look "garbage" to people nowadays? KH II stands out to me as a game that looks pretty gorgeous even now, 12 years after release. SSBM another example. Do they really look that bad? (Not influenced by a nostalgia lens, I never played Melee til a year ago.) Maybe I view graphics quality from a different perspective.
+TheFirstMuffinMan: On a CRT they look great, and too a degree they look okay on an emulator in 480p. However on an LCD TV they don't stand up too well, mainly due to the low resolution of the game.
Fair view. I play Melee on a large flatscreen with a widescreen hack, and I think it looks great. I played through KH II on a small LCD a couple years ago and appreciated its graphics. But I don't play lots of recent games, and the ones I'm interested in are often highly stylised like Breath of the Wild. It's surprising to admit to myself that I don't have enough experience in recent games to compare them.
It's noticeable for about 30 seconds, and only if you compare it to something else. It's always better to just play the games as they were meant to be played, and to hell with anything else.
If you read this and have issues setting up pressure sensitive buttons on MGS2 and 3 on PCSX2 for a XBOX 360/ONE controller or PS4, you can set the joysticks and the LT RT (L2 R2) in the PCSX2 plugin, then change the other keys to Keyboard keys, and use Joy2Key to use these keys on your controller. The thing is on the PCSX2 plugin, you can set for instance the Q key to 100% pushed Square button, then set the W key to 50%, or 20 or any % you need. The thing is, in MGS3, automatic weapons and other weapons uses different sensitivity, so you have to put different sensitivity for both kind of weapons. The problem is there are only 12 buttons on your controller! So at some point you'll see that you dont have enough buttons to use all the inputs and possibility the game offers. To fix this, on MGS3 for instance, you can set the lower Square sensitivity to the same button as the 100% Triangle button which is the Action button that's used to climb trees, boxes, ladders and some other stuff. So you'll have 2 keys set on 1 button, and both can coexist without issue! This was inspired by the MGS Twin Snakes configuration, where you have to use the ACTION button to trigger the safety of the gun. Other tip, I set L1 (auto aim) on the left thumbstick button, in trigger mode on Joy2Key. I push the thumbstick down once : it triggers auto aim, I push it another time, it cancels auto aim. For CQC I was inspired by MGS 3DS. Hold the CQC button = shifts another controller configuration on joy 2 key, then set different cqc actions on the DPad. Now you know everything you need to set all your CQC sensitivity shit and all ! I spent so much time finding the best configuration, but now YOU wont have to spend much to configure your controller since i already gave you the theory. Maybe i should actually do a video about this...
There's a long-lost PSX Emulator I found called PSXeven 0.19. It has some plugins that come with it that actually run better than today's plugins with EPSXE and I've upscaled to 4k with that emulator a few times for a few games. There's some games on PS1 that have modding communities and with some of the mods applied , the games look of ps2 quality at least
Hi, just wondering, are you running these emulators with ROM images or original discs in your PC? (obviously they won't be the original discs for the cartridge based games)
Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness?, played pretty well for me in 4k, evrything looks better except the HUD as they are fixed images. I had some audio issues but i think that was my own fault. I used Dolphin for this
if i have to say one game that surprised me on the ds when i souped up the rezolution, it is metroid prime hunters, textures i thought were plain gradients are actualy detailed as all hell and cranking up the rez makes this ds game look like a beautifull gamecube to wii game
Scaled up Silent Hill 1 with Widescreen is great. It's methods for saving memory (the fog) isn't hurting the widescreen rendering, so it looks fairly native.
OMG Those Wii and Gamecube games look so great at 4K. Like I barely notice any issues of texture stretching or low polygon models like on earlier systems on the same resolution. Same graphical things can be said about the PS2. I wanna see the next Nintendo system have 4K support and ports of these games at 4K cuz they look great
If DraStic isn't working well then try using DSemue. it works amazingly well hut the only problem I have with it is that for some reason I couldn't get it to detect my controller so if that doesn't work for you then you better hope the game you're playing doesn't rely too much on button controls. Because of this I couldn't really play _Kirby SSU_ very well and I honestly prefer that version but instead had to run the original _Kirby Super Star_ using Snes9x in order to fix the controller problem. And I don't like the snes version of the game as much, especially because the Select button doesn't discard your abilities like it should. There are times I try to do a freestyle speedrun and next thing that happens is I stand there for 2 minutes trying to figure out why the fuck I can't discard my ability.
How did you get 4k? Did you have to tinker the files manually? on my dolphin emulators (i got a motionplus version im still trying to figure out how to motionplus for skyward sword) the maximum internal render i could get was like 2k 4:3 or something its a weird resolution, looks great af but its just a weird number and mario sunshine gave me black bars
If you ever do this again, PLEASE try Speed Racer the Videogame (it's the one with the car in the part where you show the emulator itself)! It was my favorite game growing up and (at least as far as I remember) pretty freaking great and has a solid soundtrack to boot.
Great video, nice to see some love for Dragon Quest, my favourite series of all time, though I do get triggered as fuck every time you say "Dragons Quest".
Super Mario Brothers Galaxy 2 is hard to forgive but maybe “low poly textures” could mean textures that fit with very low poly models by having little detail? Unlikely but possibly implied
Why i've almost gone backwards with my gaming and pretty much play more older games than newer ones. On my 4k TV with dolphin/pcsx2 running at 4k+ really does look fantastic and almost feels like a new experience. I remember playing DQ8 again in 4k and it just looked so good. That good that i put 100+ hours back into it and loved every second. Plus, the text issues can be fixed quite easily :).
You aught to try Vagrant Story on PS1 and FFXII on PS2 to see what those can look like, I imagine they both look fantasic, they've both aged remarkably well

“This is the original 480p. Now this is what it looks like in 4K. So much better, right?”
Me, watching a 720p video on a 1136 × 640 phone screen: oh wow

Guess I was just looking for mistakes. The only mistake here, is the one I made
Aha, it's cool man.
Dragon Quest 8 looks like a 3DS game. Damn.
Suneru It was ported to the 3DS a few months ago, so that makes sense.
....Is that a bad thing? 🤔 Probably huh?
The 3DS GPU isn't that far from PS2. Based on Metal Gear Solid 3, 3DS can handle PS2 assets/games fairly well albeit at a lower resolution.
Meanwhile Resident Evil: Revelations on 3DS looks arguably better than any PS2 game thanks more modern effects PS2 couldn't duplicate.
Dragon Quest 8 has simplistic graphics and that translated to 3DS fine. But bear in mind the PS2 is running it at a higher resolution than 3DS.
hmm. Interesting video. I would like to see more Wii/gamecube games in 4k
Same.
I know I couldn't even tell the difference on smg2
Personally, I wouldn't say "garbage" but it is HIGHLY noticeable that it's running at a considerably lower resolution.
360p...
Im *really* early.
John / DDFusion every thing I watch is in 360p
I always watch videos in 360 or 480p.
>"old games"
>wii game in the thumbnail
>realize the wii came out over 10 years ago...
8:33 I had no idea there was a game called "Dragons Quest 8".
3:03 MOH looks amazing! I need to play that again. That game and Underground II are outstanding titles.
Wii Sports looks glorious!
Composite cable?! My Wii is hooked up with RGB SCART!!!
Please activate Windows...
Thank god I'm not the only one who saw that
Try Kingdom Hearts 2 at 4k, its beautiful D':
Agreed, Kingdom Hearts is surprisingly good visually for a game that I found runs perfectly on even a 750 Ti
Gamesfan34260 Runs perfectly on Radeon R6 integrated graphics. Except some shots in some cutscenes, then it slows to a crawl for some reason
Hi, just wondering, are you running these emulators with ROM images or original discs in your PC? (obviously they won't be the original discs for the cartridge based games)
I highly recommend emulating Front Mission 4 for the PS2. That game looks incredible with all enhancements turned on.
*talks about having no issues with ps1 emulation while the shadow texture is a black box*
+calvinatorzcraft: Big white text says it was a recording issue..
You said it as I was thinking it lol.
cncz sorry to say I never could get PlayStation emulation to work years ago
You should be shipped to hell in a black box...
Try's to be smart in the comments doesn't notice the big text in the corner
I feel like the GameCube Pokémon game with dark Lugia would look good in 4K
Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness?, played pretty well for me in 4k, evrything looks better except the HUD as they are fixed images.
I had some audio issues but i think that was my own fault.
I used Dolphin for this
Stijn Smekens I've got that game on GameCube tempted to sell it.
+Xx Luke xX I'll buy it
Oh the *NOSTALGIA!*
10:35 When suddenly Pickle Rick jumps out of the bush.
if i have to say one game that surprised me on the ds when i souped up the rezolution, it is metroid prime hunters, textures i thought were plain gradients are actualy detailed as all hell and cranking up the rez makes this ds game look like a beautifull gamecube to wii game
Wii Sports looked amazing
Couldn't agree more.
Holy 360p Batman!
8:03 i see you’re cursed with the watermark as well
>"Twin Snakes has no pop-in"
>Rampant pop in on sides of screen
lol
This is what the Wii looked like to me as a kid
Super Mario "Brothers" Galaxy 2... okay? xD
finaly using a emulator on my face people will not throw up when they see me.
Lol-manager 178 all of the textures would be ultra HD tho
but ur granmer will make people throw up

Just a small thing, but why are you forcing games to 16:9?
Most PS1/N64 games are 4:3.
Maybe he has widescreen patches
Scaled up Silent Hill 1 with Widescreen is great. It's methods for saving memory (the fog) isn't hurting the widescreen rendering, so it looks fairly native.
OMG Those Wii and Gamecube games look so great at 4K. Like I barely notice any issues of texture stretching or low polygon models like on earlier systems on the same resolution. Same graphical things can be said about the PS2. I wanna see the next Nintendo system have 4K support and ports of these games at 4K cuz they look great
6:39 Super Smash Bro's
Super Mario Brothers Galaxy? I'm triggered....
Can’t you connect a normal wii remote on dolphin using Windows 10? I remember you can. I might be wrong
yes you can i done it through blue tooth
Yes
RaineTCG mario galaxy? I have used my ps4 remote before but the wii remote is the best experience
When he talks about Ocarina, MM music plays in the background
Im gettin flashbacks and tears watching this.
why tears
0:17 super mario BROS galaxy 2 ? really?
isn't desume better than drastic for windows
+Madcircle Tohell: I did use Desume, please see pinned comment for more.
+swiftlydoge27 《Dragonite Wolves》{Leader}: please see pinned comment.
Budget-Builds Official sry I didn't see it. It wasn't pinned
Activate Windows!!!
"Super Mario Brothers Galaxy 2" "low poly textures"
Low Poly textures how does that work
Super Mario Brothers Galaxy 2 is hard to forgive but maybe “low poly textures” could mean textures that fit with very low poly models by having little detail? Unlikely but possibly implied
@@Mreoewwmrow Its some revolutionary thing they used back in the 70's. For example on the wii while playing super mario brothers galaxy 2.
Omg.. Starwars Battlefront II?!?!? Me and my brother used to play this game ALL the time together! SUCH MEMORIES!
If you use the official nightly builds of Desmume, you can upscale the 3D objects and textures which makes some games look great.

Dragon Quest 8 looks absolutely great. I'm thinking about playing it again in 4k now, love this game.
When i first saw wind waker i thought it was a wii u game
It on Wii u though
And it's better looking on Wii u :/
@richard killface It looks better on Cemu with at 4k RESOLUTION, the textures are the same size, dumb dumb.
ocarina of time 3D looks great when rendered in 4k
even better with the hd texture mod.
I want wii sports on switch >:c
do more of these 4K emulation of old games! :D
You aught to try Vagrant Story on PS1 and FFXII on PS2 to see what those can look like, I imagine they both look fantasic, they've both aged remarkably well
