At the 15 minute mark, had me remember the time my jkd school closed down and was told I was going to be a certified instructor but I never got my certificate. I was very upset and didn't train for 4 years until i survived a health scare I had in 2021. I'm finding myself learning new lessons that my sifu didn't teach me. Octavio is one of the few people that I’ve seen that has actually grasped Bruce’s philosophy and ever evolving concepts in the Martial arts and applies them beautifully, rather then just mimicking Bruce Lee from his films and calling himself a Jeet Kune Do expert like many others have tried to do
Wow, Octavio! This is gold! Thank you for sharing this thoughtful and introspective look into your personal journey in martial arts. I love the title you chose for this documentary. Interestingly, I recently read “Mastery” by George Leonard, where he emphasizes the ripple effect - the idea that small, seemingly insignificant actions or changes can lead to significant and widespread impacts over time. I began training in JKD with Angelo five years ago and have made remarkable progress since then. The influence of mentors like you and Angelo, who expect the absolute best from their students, pushes me to confront my limitations and strive to become the best version of myself. Your focus on developing speed, power, agility, and reaction time are definitely challenging, but it keeps empowering me and giving me a greater sense of self-awareness. But it is the philosophical underpinnings of JKD that resonates with me the most. The emphasis on adaptability and on constantly evolving one's approach - these lessons have carried far beyond the dojo. They've shaped the way I approach challenges in all areas of my life. Embracing the Way of the martial athlete wasn't just about learning techniques - it was about embarking on a journey of self-discovery. Through the crucible of training, I found a deeper understanding of myself, my strengths, and my purpose. It was a pivotal point that continues to reverberate through every aspect of my life to this day. I feel incredibly fortunate to have trained with you and am deeply grateful for your valuable teachings. Please continue to inspire the JKD community. I eagerly anticipate the next episode!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It sounds like you've already taken the leap forward, as you continue to self-actualize. Thank you for being a part of this. 😃

Sifu Steve Golden still got it.........thanking you Sifu Octavio for sharing this video, means so much to me. You see, 6 years ago I had a heart failure and was pronounce dead but was revived by Paramedics. I also was in a induce coma for 4 days. My heart was funtioning at 18% and I was told I will need a new heart. Anyway, long story short, after 3-4 years when I was much stronger and didn't need a new heart. I decided I was going to do something about it, health/fitness wise. I decided JKD and Wing Chun will be my sports. I began to learn through internet and books, taking notes, videos of everything important. Your videos and some of Sifu Steve Goldens demonstration and theories in the 'First Annual Jun Fan JKD Seminar', and many, many more videos and notes from past and presence instructors and schools, has given me so much confidence. It has been a long, long, road but I must say, my side kicks have improved since I first started and I must say it is quite lethal for a 64 year old. So I thank you Sir..........

One thing I don't hear often is what Jerry Poteet said here : "is it simple enough - is it efficient enough"? which (in my opinion) is one of the CORE principles of JKD. Besides the jeet tek and the parry/hit (at the same time) - both techniques which will ALWAYS be part of JKD) - seems subjective after that - instructors adding what they believe is effective. I use to work for a government contractor - manufacturing line - long process of building parts, testing it troubleshooting failures, then run a series of tests before the final product is deemed "perfect" to ship off. The admininstrator told us if we could come up with ways to make the line more EFFICIENT without SACRIFICING quality (or maybe improve on it) - if they implemented our plan - we could get up to a $20,000 payday. Anyway - JKD should always evolve to be the most efficient - without sacrificing (or improving) SPEED, POWER, and DECEPTIVENESS. Great video, by the way.
Like I said, keep it alive, keep it real, viable and express. Oh! I still see that hint of kenpo in one of those recoveries 😅. Stay well, stay close. Walk on as a warrior

*This is a great episode, Octavio! As a JKD practitioner, I love how well you showcased it. I do have to ask, because I noticed some of the instructors from the Ted Wong line are against trapping and are focussed purely on evasion and attack without traps and also with the back hand protecting your chin from the side rather than an almost fully open palm protecting your face from the front, because apparently Bruce's last photo in the stance showed him doing that. What do you think of this?*
Yes. You shouldn’t trap if you’re only evading and attacking. If having the hand open helps with security then I would suggest a student to continue using it. Same thing with the chin open. Just determine when & why you would use the defense you’re seeking in that way .

What Steve said about a great system being one that stops you getting in even a situation. Reminds me of Islam which I started following aged 19. You have so many ppl getting into fights or getting attacked, things going wrong in their life, because they make choices that are stupid. If you go to a bar what do you thinks gonna happen? Drunk ppl reside there and some drunks can’t handle the drink. So don’t hang around with drunk ppl. You want a good woman, don’t go and look for one in a club where she’s basically dressed herself up to attract attention of all men. We should make wise decisions in all aspects of life. If we avoid certain environments then we most likely will never get into a violent confrontation. Don’t walk at night, don’t show certain types of body language that could attract bad attention whether that be looking down through lack of confidence or bowling along with your chest out due to arrogance. Be confident but not cocky. You won’t get picked on by a mugger and nobody will be offended by your aura.
