"Keep away from clichés, this world is much more complicated" something I think millions of people need to hear and really understand. Today's climate is incredibly polarized in terms of politics, everything is either far-right, far-left this and that. If one expresses a worry or deals with a certain issue then they are most likely going to be thrown into a certain ideology/side and then have to deal with everything that side stands for, it's very extreme. Words are beginning to lose their meaning because of the irresponsible usage of it.
Yeah, it's another variation of cancel-culture, which isn't new, it's just more emphasized through the social medias and the politicians and extreme ideologists use it quite wisely for their needs. I wish the problem was just letting people listen to him, but because of cancel culture he is being dehumanized. It's difficult to erase the indoctrination from school, childhood, TV, and such.
There is a book titled "Empire's Workshop" which details the unconscionable campaign by the USA to exert control over Central and South America by any means necessary, including the training and financing of death squads that would massacre entire villages if they were in favor of terrible things like labor unions. Even JFK was guilty of this, as Chomsky said here, and Ronald Reagan was probably the worst of all. The details in this book will make any decent person throw up in sheer disgust at what this country has done to its southern neighbors and continues to do around the world, all to maximize profits for the one percent who actually run things.
There's a book called, "A People's History of the United States" that's shows essentially the same thing done in the United States. Quite the read, only put it down to cry.
@@beefsoda1 Were it not for the opportunity of global exploitation, the same elite would be raping, plundering, pillaging and murdering the American poplation, just as they did through to the end of the 19th and early 20th century. In this way, "we" benefit from the exploitation of the "global south" - we are spared rod, because the slave master is accorded opportunity to beat the hell out of other people. Consider the relatively favorable treatment accorded to demonstrators and protesters in America - particularly those who attempt to block construction projects for environmental concerns - people who engage in similar protests in Central and South America would be tortured and murdered by U.S. trained mercenary militias paid by U.S. corporate interests. Others suffer, so we might enjoy a privileged lifestyle free of atrocity.
The Apple Pie originated in England. But then the Tory cunts have just as much blood on their hands and are pretty much the opposite side of the American plague.
You're not wrong. Chomsky doesn't wear his atheism on his sleeve like certain other public intellectuals but he's always been open about it when asked. The best answer I ever heard him give, when asked whether he was an atheist, was to claim that he couldn't properly call himself one 'because it is not at all clear what I'm being asked to deny.' I don't think you can get any clearer than that.
@@user-fs8tl7ni1w If he went to Jewish summer camps as a kid, all the more reason to believe he is an Atheist. Most people become non-believers in their early teens.
I find it interesting that Chomsky opened with the attack on Jesuit priests on a Salvadoran university. My parents met on that very university (simply called "Central American University", plus the name of a historical Salvadoran figure) and were going through their studies back when the attack happened. They personally knew some of the priests, all of which were among the foremost intellectuals on the country. They were killed along with the housemaid and her daughter, who was also a student at the college (probably on scholarship, as this university has relatively expensive tuition fees and ranks as the best in the country) and completely unrelated to the "crime" the priests had committed - standing against oppression of the common people by the greedy oligarchy. I graduated from that very same university earlier this year, and it still shows its legacy through the promotion of social activism and understanding, though I do regret not being able to meet the priests in question, whose loss was certainly felt during the rebuild of the country following the end of the civil war.

@@karenprescott5518 Are you suggesting there was even a chance communism succeeded during that time in Latin America? It is hard to believe someone could think that in this day an age... Those movements were so marginal, particularly in South America. They were used by the Occidental powers and internal establishments as an excuse to suppress social justice causes and development. Mostly they repress groups that had little or nothing to do with communism... Por example, a disproportional number of union representatives were murdered or disappeared. There was never a chance for communism to get hold in Latin America. Even documents from American embassies confirm this, very early in, for example, the Argentinean coup. @@goblinoide Not the word in itself, I believe but in certain contexts, like this interview. Chomsky is enumerating facts, past atrocities. Nothing will change them and therefore there is nothing to 'hope' for'. Except the (vain) hope that the future might be different.
I thought Chomsky's short treatise on Christianity as coopted by the state and the oppresses of mankind until the advent of Liberation Theology with its bloody demise was instructional, informative, and lucid. I would call Chomsky a champion of liberating the mind from the disease of elitism and its symptom, imperialism. Those who would disparage him I challenge to excel his knowledge and wisdom Usually the best they can do is snide remarks, and profanity.
+Bruce Campbell A lot of Chomsky's "knowledge" is false. The problem is that Chomsky has the balls to speak with authority on issues he couldn't possibly know about, i.e. he didn't witness anything he talks about first hand. Most people have a sense of humility and refrain from talking about things so absolutely. And he has no wisdom. He ties everything into the same fictional story: "the poor are virtuous and abused, and the rich are evil and abusive." It's an appealing story, particularly for young, dumb people with no idea of what to do with themselves. Meanwhile, Chomsky is worth millions. He has a great business model.
TheSnorkeler Language is largely a matter of Semantics which is the province of Chomsky. That he takes shade under the tent of the oppressed is a decision we all face and some pledge fealty. If you want to shill for those who have it all by virtue of their wealth then worship money. I believe the world is our commons as bequeathed by our creator. I would aim toward balancing the playing field. Chomsky would teach us to understand Orwellian language. War is not Peace. Offense is not defense. Imperialism is not freedom.
Bruce Campbell It sounds like you are admitting that Chomsky is agenda-driven, and I have no argument there. Personally, I don't criticize people based on class, I judge people based on the content of their character. A bad poor person is no nobler than a bad rich person and a well-to-do rich person is no better than a well-to-do poor person.
TheSnorkeler Even Jesus and Mohammad and Gandhi and King were agenda driven. The question is whether wealth and property and power is the highest priority or the people themselves. Very, very happy to see that Chomsky knows and acknowledges liberation theology. Too many people are ignorant about that and always ridicule Christianity by setting it simply equal to US-style Evangelical nonsense
I see “Christianity”’ more as an evolutionary process and that’s why we have sooooooooooo many different denominations (and non denominations) now. Each and every believer with their own beliefs. We know that from the beginning there were a few different denominations such as the gnostic sects with gospels like Thomas and more open sects that would become the orthodoxy churches like the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox etc. But from there, there were events like the First Council of Nicaea, Council of Chalcedon, (First, Second and Third) Council of Constantinople where theological questions such as “if there is only one God, then is Jesus a god?” It was a clumsy way to figure things out and you think an all powerful being could clarify what he meant! And then you have the likes of Martin Luther (not as Monty Python portrays him) and John Calvin breaking from the dominating Roman Catholic in Europe in and around the 1500s. Al, saying “wait one moment”...but in German and French respectively. From them, you have a schism of everyone making their own churches like Protestants, Church of England, Quakers, etc. Then in the early 1800s you have the Second Great Awakening with the Adventist, Mormons and others in the Americas. Which I agree with you, is evangelical nonsense. Now we have your liberation theology...it’s your belief and I’d never tell you what you think. But I will say this; everyone thinks they know God, a god, or gods and yet there is zero credible evidence for anything supernatural and that’s why I ridicule Christianity. It’s all in people’s heads. Ask the Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Catholic, or any of the 1000s and 1000s and 1000s of denominations and the millions and millions of nondenominational Christians, and they will tell you they have the capital “T” TRUTH and it is all different! But in fairness, I do understand why people reach beliefs; culture, communal pressures, confirmation biases, psychology, brain chemistry, and do I dare say “logic”? etc, etc...so you go on believing liberation theology is best and mock all the others. In the end, I’m just mocking one more denominations than you; and it’s yours. Stay safe my friend.
A hallmark of true Christianity is the doctrine of individual sin. Jesus had plenty of opportunities to condemn systemic evil - such as the all-encompassing systemic evil of the Roman Empire - but he did not. Jesus condemned personal wrongdoing, such as pride, greed, unbelief. Confessing personal sin is the gateway in Christian theology to grace.
Remember that the current pope did not protect the priests defending indigenous peoples and liberation theology. Instead, they were thrown quite alive from planes over the ocean. The Argentinian report still hasn't been released to this day.

The only thing that worries about how people are interacting with religion (Faith) is how they use that belief (Faith) to commit terrible atrocities and to also abdicate any personal responsibility. "Anything that requires someone not to think for themselves or to abdicate all responsibility is to avoided at all costs." Oscar Wilde.
Nicholas Dickens in my opinion the real tradition of Protestantism (Luther and Calvin) if taken seriously rest on several ideas. 1) individuals have moral responsibility 2) forgiving others (debts or sins) and asking for forgiveness from others and God 3) the idea that no man has authority over another man 4) that there is a greater moral intelligence, that is greater than yourself which every individual has access to. Cults can emerge and if you look at the work of psychologists Robert Jay Lifton you can see how cults work. Christian Cult like religions like many evangelical churches are about the individual surrendering their executive functions and moral reasoning to the group not to a “higher power” so it goes against both Luther and Calvin. In the early 20th century religious literalism was on its way out. Reading Joseph Campbell he described the 1920’s as being very secular and atheist. Conservatives gave the religious literalists an enormous amount of power and influence since 1970’s to the point that it has erased the non-literalist traditions.

He expresses what I've been thinking since I was eighteen and I'm sixty four now. I was walking from my college campus to the bus stop on the way back home and some hippie guy got in conversation with me (Delhi, India, 1974). I mentioned radical revolution and Marxism and he said Jesus was the first world beating radical revolutionary of the poor and downtrodden and proposed a revolution based in God instead of without God such as Marx proposed. It immediately struck me how a Christian revolutionary socialism could overturn the empire of the oppressed, perhaps through Gandhian passive resistance and sabotage rather then violent revolution. If the military forces could be persuaded to turn on the elites. Persuasion could ultimately prove more powerful and enduring then force. Of course that never got tried. Socialist revolution following Lenin committed to violent takeoves and forcible changes and ultimately failed. In many places it was opposed precisely because it opposed God, such as in South Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. If following Chomsky the Christian leadership had indeed organised preferentially for the poor and the suffering, outlasting the U.S. crackdown via regional forces of statist coersion, Jesus might have become a force for positive political change and countered the world elitist hegemony that appears to be increasingly dominant and organised today.

2:12-2:24 - Professor Chomsky does not say things lightly without first checking and re-checking the accuracy of his facts; one had better do their homework well before entering into any sort of debate with Old Noam. I admire him for his moral courage and intellectual rigour, and I do agree with most of his public positions. Also, I’m aware that he’s only attempting to build an argument here, in support of liberation theology, but at the same time I know he’s got early Christianity all wrong. It was not the sort of social justice movement “of, by, and for” the poor imagined by 19th century liberal romantics, and popularized by 1960’s ‘Flower Power’ ideals; and it was certainly not “pacifist” in character - just the opposite. It’s understandable that Noam would subscribe to that image of early Christianity since it has been the most prevalent one among progressives for nearly two centuries; but for all his brilliance and wide erudition, Professor Chomsky is no biblical scholar or archaeologist: the movement headed by Jesus of Galilee was perceived to be every bit as lethal to the imperial authority by the Roman status quo in 33 CE as the most zealous forms of fundamentalist terrorism are to the centres of global hegemony in AD 2020.

Poverty was the normal state of life for humanity up until the middle 20th century. And then poverty was eliminated only in industrialized democracies.
Why don't people similar to Noam Chomsky lead our nations and our people? Why is it that we can listen to people like Noam, and hear them clarify the things that we already know or suspect are deeply wrong with our world, listen to them explain the reasons for these things and the way they link to each other, but all we can do is listen, and all they can do is speak, we all acknowledge what is going on, we all know the things that are wrong, but we can't or don't change anything.
Because implementing Chomsky's ideas would call into question the very foundations of capitalism itself, the immortality of planned obsolescence in product development, bottomless consumerism as an economic platform... Too many companies would scream blue murder, being asked to think of the general good and workers over stock shares and profits.

As were so many human animals, I also was indoctrinated by religious parents, (albeit they were kind,) never questioned the existence of a creator. For 70 years I tried to believe in the existence of a creator that was pure divine love, but within my own sense of common decency ... I knew better. I knew that if I had the power to create a universe, suffering would not exist. Finally, I stopped trying to fool my self, and since then have believed as did Stephen Hawking (before he died) that the universe always existed ... no creator ... malevolent ... or otherwise ... involved. I am now 81 years of age, and am at peace with the idea that I am whole, just as I am.
CHOMSKY: I am a child of the Enlightenment. I think irrational belief is a dangerous phenomenon, and I try to consciously avoid irrational belief. On the other hand, I certainly recognize that it's a major phenomenon for people in general, and you can understand why it would be. It does, apparently, provide personal sustenance, but also bonds of association and solidarity and a means for expressing elements of one's personality that are often very valuable elements. To many people it does that. In my view, there's nothing wrong with that. My view could be wrong, of course, but my position is that we should not succumb to irrational belief.
Thank you. I used to be a Christian until I realized that it is a religion that if practiced to it's core produces a lack of empathy, a submissive mindset, and an apathy toward things in this life (for the life to come is much greater). One cannot love someone and simultaneously believe they deserve to be tortured forever. They ignore it because they recognize the ridiculous nature of a such a maxim "Do not resist evil." To submit to evil is to aid it, and therefore be responsible in part.
You just have understood the Bible a bit wrongly. The Bible says you can't judge no other, for you are human and you are as sinner as them, so you just can and have to follow Christ's first commandment: LOVE each other as He loved us. We are born with a sin than inhibits us to reach the Glory of God, so we can't go to heaven. Only through believing in Jesus death and resurrection by the power of the Father is that we can be saved. Therefore christianity, if practised to it's core, is a religion of love, empathy and humility. And the Word of God doesn't says you have to hate being in this world😆just says that you don't need to pursuit mundane treasures, for you are dust and you and everything in this world will returnt to dust, so it's better to make you treasures in heaven. 🤍🙌

New to Chomsky, I like his simplified understanding to some degree. In Asia, where the Gospel started, the Gospel didn't spread with wealth and power after the 3rd century.
Chomsky has Vietnam Inc in his bookshelf. First published in 1971, Vietnam Inc. played a crucial part in changing public attitudes in the United States, turning the tide of opinion and ultimately helping to put an end to the Vietnam War. Philip Jones Griffiths' classic account of the war was the outcome of three years of intensive reporting and is one of the most detailed surveys of any conflict in twentieth-century history. Showing us the true horrors of the war as well as a study of Vietnamese rural life, the photographer and author creates a compelling argument against the de-humanizing power of the modern war machine and American imperialism. Rare and highly sought-after, Vietnam Inc. became one of the enduring classics of photojournalism. It is now available in this new edition - a careful re-creation of the original with Philip Jones Griffiths' personal layouts and commentaries. A new foreword by US and political critic Noam Chomsky traces the book's impact on American public opinion. Review 'Few photo books can claim the social and historic importance of Vietnam Inc.' (Book Forum) ''The greatest description of war since Goya', raved Henri Cartier-Bresson ... Thirty years on, Vietnam Inc. is still a classic ... essential to anyone interested in Vietnam's history, America, photography or war.' (Far Eastern Economic Review) Synopsis First published in 1971, Philip Jones Griffiths' account of the Vietnamese War was the outcome of three years' reporting and is a detailed survey of the conflict. Showing us the true horrors of the war as well as offering a study of Vietnamese folk life, the author argues against the de-humanizing power of technology and highlights the arrogance and hypocrisy of American imperialistic attitudes. This new edition is a recreation of the original with Philip Jones Griffiths' personal layouts and commentaries. There is a foreword by Noam Chomsky, who was profoundly affected by the book when it was originally published. About the Author Highly influential, master photojournalist Philip Jones Griffiths (b.1936) is also a writer and film-maker. His photographs have appeared in every major magazine in the world and his assignments have led him to all five continents. He became a member of Magnum in 1971. Noam Chomsky is one of America's most prominent linguists and political critics. A renowned Professor of Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he has written over 30 political books
3:04 Vatican Council II commenced in October 1962 and didn’t produce any substantive documents until Sacrosanctum Concilium in December 1963. Chomsky makes one logical connection between (a) the beginning of VCII in October 1962 and (b) a US military-led coup in Brazil in 1962 when no connection whatsoever exists!
Totally agree. Hitch was the one who originally got me into Atheism and, as a result, many other intellectual interests that spring off from that. However, I've come to question the authenticity and sincerity of Hitchens' iconoclastic nature and contrarianism. Furthermore, his arguments against god, now that I have gone rather far on the topic, seem a bit inchoate- rudimentary. Chomsky is just so thorough, so serious... hard to resist giving him loyalty.

I'm well aware of Chomsky's large contributions to academia. The guy has been an influential linguist since the 50s. That's impressive. His work on language, particularly on syntactic structures, generative grammar, and that interesting idea about the existence of a "grammar organ" that, while having been dismissed by neuroscience, is still an interesting way to look at language, are all nice.

Those documents show how surprised officials were of the little resistance subversive forces put against the dictators.

@@goblinoide
Not the word in itself, I believe but in certain contexts, like this interview. Chomsky is enumerating facts, past atrocities. Nothing will change them and therefore there is nothing to 'hope' for'. Except the (vain) hope that the future might be different.
Chomsky is an intellectual who is interested in what is rather than how he thinks things ought to be.
TheSnorkeler
Language is largely a matter of Semantics which is the province of Chomsky.
TheSnorkeler
Even Jesus and Mohammad and Gandhi and King were agenda driven. The question is whether wealth and property and power is the highest priority or the people themselves. Physical or Spiritual ethos. Or perhaps a balance in accordance with the current situation? While Chomsky doesn't ascribe to the language of religion he does project a religious ethos. I believe he serves the Logos.

We know that from the beginning there were a few different denominations such as the gnostic sects with gospels like Thomas and more open sects that would become the orthodoxy churches like the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox
etc.
@@losttribe3001 Every single community began as a Gnostic community, but with individual experiences in out of body experiences in the Spirit world, no two experiences were quite the same, and they fell to attacking one another to prove their 'gnosis' was better than anyone else's. Constantine put a stop to 20,000 Gnostics in Rome killing and quarreling with one another, and the Movement died as all things do under the yoke of orthodoxy. What exists today as 'Christianity' in the pineal few Christians know anything about is anyone's guess.
@@johnnykay7411 it’s wrong to say definitely every community began as a gnostic community. We don’t know and a lot is lost to history. Christianity began at a time of great illiteracy and ignorance; where record keeping was not a priority. It’s why scholarly efforts, at best, can date the gospel of Mark to @70 C.E.....which then was based on oral traditions like “Q”....decades after the alleged Jesus lived.
But yes, many Christians are unaware of how their own beliefs came into existence. And there are cultural, epistemological, psychological (such as confirmation biases and brain chemistry), and dare I say, logical reasons why people have these beliefs....so I try not be to cynical about it. But fir me, religious beliefs fall apart when you look at them objectively.

Review
'Few photo books can claim the social and historic importance of Vietnam Inc.' (Book Forum)
''The greatest description of war since Goya', raved Henri Cartier-Bresson ... Thirty years on, Vietnam Inc. is still a classic ... essential to anyone interested in Vietnam's history, America, photography or war.' (Far Eastern Economic Review)
Synopsis
First published in 1971, Philip Jones Griffiths' account of the Vietnamese War was the outcome of three years' reporting and is a detailed survey of the conflict.
