    📹 Lesson Details:
Today we’re going to take a look at a Stevie Wonder classic: I Wish from the Songs In The Key Of Life album.
There are two main riffs to deal with in this song and we’ll look at them both. We're going to look at the notes in there, I'll give some tips on technique and then we're going to breakdown and analyse what's going on from a harmony perspective.
Analysing bass lines in this way can be a great way of understanding music theory and how it works in practice but it's also a great help when it comes to learning and memorising a song.

Nate Watts is an underrated bass player, total monster on tunes like ''Do I Do''

I totally agree. If you're playing bass for Stevie Wonder, You are a bad man.

I agree with your statement! Do I Do has become one of my favorite liness that Nate Watts has played, absolutely underrated!

This is one of R&B's simplest yet funkiest basslines.

I've been playing this for quite a while now, wondering how to make it through the entire song, as my hand was aching after 2-3 min already. The secret is: No Streching. Thank you so much for that!

I've been playing this track in bands for years now. Once you have the notes in your system, it's quite straightforward, but a physical challange to keep it upspeed during the complete song. Always happy with the breakdowns after chorus😄

You're not wrong. I looked it up yesterday and got the basic flow down in about half an hour but it is an absolute marathon to keep up throughout the song.

Thank you Mark, I’ve been playing this song for a while, tho occasionally stumbling over the second part, scrambling during the 1st walking line for the right pattern, but breaking it into 3, 3-4 note parts, makes it easier to remember.
I don’t know if that made any sense...
In better words...this lesson helped a lot. Cheers

You are doing a great job of explaining the technical playing, I really need to hear you play the bassline slowly, quickly does not matter.

Thank you, Mark. How does one decide in what positions to play bass lines? For example, the Ebm-Ab7 riff could also be played entirely in 1st position. Is there a rule of thumb that one should always favor thicker strings whenever possible?

This is also a good tune to learn in first position using only the first four frets on the bass ☝

    • @josephdangelo3352
      @josephdangelo3352 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That's the way I learned it also, much more fun to play in that position, taking advantage of open strings in the chromatic runs!

Wouldn't it be a whole step?

Not bad, but there is too much confusing talks inbetween about skales etc. Just show how to play the song. Keep it simple.

That’s not what this channel is. You’ll probably prefer cover solutions channel for that. This is an educational channel.
