I like the way Mark includes the theory, explains the positions, shows the score. A proper education rather than some “teachers’ who simply think that showing you notes is adequate. With scales, positions, rhythms learnt I can use this in so many other ways. Great lesson.
I've always played this with different fingering positions from what you've shown here. There are some tricky position shifts so helpful to show this way. Eventually people play what is comfortable for them. This way will make it easier to learn for newer players. Song suggestion, Higher Ground. Most know this for Flea and The RHCP'S cover. Cheers

Amazing what can be done with just the minor pentatonic scale and it's relative major scale.I'm sure many songs are based around them only.Tons of interesting improvisations can also be pulled from them.Thank you for a great lesson.
Hey fellow bass busters; If, like me, you struggle with the muscle memory for licks like this try playing the whole riff (once you've figured the fingering) at half time but STACCATO. I don't know why but the staccato really helped me remember the riff properly so it was imbedded in my muscle memory.

Nate Watts tunes down a semitone (Eflat, Aflat, etc) so to him this would be like playing in C#. So while everyone else is playing the intro to I Wish around Aflat and Eflat he's quite happily doing it with A and E. I'm sure he'd be equally happy if he wasn't tuned down, but I need all the help I can get.
Sir Duke?! And can you/someone explain the difference between the Cm and Eb maj pentatonics? To me they seem like the same thing just starting on different notes... Thanks!
Already done Sir Duke. For the Pentatonics, they are the same notes. But not the same scales. Just because a scale shares the notes of another doesn't mean it's the same scale. For example, C major and A Natural minor share exactly the same notes. But are they the same scale? No Have a think about it for a while and see if you can figure out why that is. Tip: Don't bother thinking about fretboard patterns or any of that stuff. Think notes, think keys and think chords.

@@adamdavies1910 The root note of the scale is the center of tonal gravity. Even though C major and A Nat minor have the same notes, the root note and main point of resolution is different. Also, the intervallic makeup is different. Measured from the root note the major scale has a major second, major third, a major 6th etc. The Minor has a minor third, a minor 6th etc. The order of whole steps and half steps from the root is different. So in other word, even though the set of pitches in the scales are the same, the different root notes make everything relative. Literally. In Eb major pentatonic, Eb is the center of the solar system. In C major it is C. Now I'm terms of using them in Master Blaster it's simply a pattern thing. The Eb major pentatonic makes for quick memorisation of the line. If you know both scale patterns you can use them to quickly think in position because they are the same notes but seen as different positions.
